    Afro Classic (Speakers Corner)

In the Seventies, fusion was a popular pigeonhole for music somewhere between jazz and pop. At the same time it was also an often used, belittling term employed by critics and representatives of 'pure' jazz, who never wanted to listen to it, let alone include any of the numerous LPs in their collection.

Forty years later, the dust has settled. Flautist Hubert Laws' recordings not only for the Atlantic but also the CTI labels are treasured - especially the present LP, which was produced by the 'Master of Sound' Creed Taylor. Now these crossover numbers from the worlds of classic, jazz, pop and easy listening are available once more. Discover, for example, Al Kooper's composition Fire And Rain (more familiar are the versions from Blood, Sweat & Tears and James Taylor), the famous theme music from the film Love Story, and three classical compositions by J. S. Bach and Mozart. All have been given a facelift and with such super sidemen ranging from Ron Carter to Bob James and a superb Freddie Waits on the drums, they are a real treat.
So cast aside any preconceptions and enjoy this meticulous production and the clear reproduction on vinyl.

    Musicians:

    • Hubert Laws (flute)

    • Don Sebesky (arranger)

    • Fred Alston, Jr. (bassoon)

    • Bob James (electric piano)

    • Gene Bertoncini (guitar)

    • David Friedman (vibraphone)

    • Ron Carter (bass)

    • Airto, Richie 'Pablo' Landrum (percussion)

    • Fred Waits (drums)

Recording: December 1970 at Rudy Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, USA

    Production: Creed Taylor

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Wolf's Law

There's something panoramic about The Joy Formidable's music - their mountainous, fuzzed out riffs and ferocious, earthy rhythms shrouded in ethereal haze. It sounds like where they're from: Childhood friends Ritzy Bryan (vocals, guitar) and Rhydian Dafydd (bass, vocals) grew up in rural North Wales, surrounded by rolling green hills and little else. There's a beauty and a loneliness to the landscape there, says Dafydd. We had no neighbors growing up, Bryan notes. I think my parents looked for a house with no neighbors so they could play their music as loud as possible.

For her part, Bryan loved the isolation. Growing up as an only child, the singer immersed herself in her parents' enormous record collection and the classical guitar studies she took on at the age of seven. I loved playing guitar by myself, back then I was quite introverted with my music, she says.

Bryan and Dafydd had been writing music separately from one another, and worked together in a couple of short-lived local bands after finishing school. They knew they wanted to collaborate, but didn't manage to make it work until a few years ago. We kept missing each other, Ritzy says. Bryan went off to Washington, D.C on a whim and returned to Wales in 2008 with renewed focus. My family situation wasn't easy to go back to says Bryan. I came back out of necessity and found a lot of sanctuary recording with Rhydian and having this new band to concentrate on.

For six months, the pair wrote together, experimenting with different sonic approaches. We'd go for walks in the hills between recordings, Dafydd remembers. We'd write for hours and hours, adds Bryan, and if we got frustrated, we'd go stomp it out, up and down the mountains. But as the sessions began yielding signature tunes like Austere and Cradle - tracks that combined the duo's interest in thick, textured noises with clear, shimmering pop hooks - they knew they'd found their sound. We'd always been into writing strong melodies, Bryan says. The sparks really flew when we started messing with things that were choral and symphonic, mixed with what both of us had already enjoyed separately: dirty, loud, rhythmic guitars and thick bass-lines.

    Murphy's Law (Awaiting Repress)

Founded in Astoria, Queens in 1983 Murphy's Law are huge part of the New York
and American hardcore legacy. Their albums, such as the self entitled, "Murphy's
Law" and the 1989 follow up "Back With A Bong" helped creating the sound of
New York Hardcore back then, as well as what it stands for today. In 2008 their
legacy even lead to the use of the song "A Day In A Life" (from the band's debut) in
the Liberty City Hardcore radio station on the Rockstar video game "Grand Theft
Auto IV". Murphy's Law never abandoned the Hardcore scene or their fans. During
the extensive career Jimmy Gestapo stayed true his scene earning him & the band
the name of one of NYHC's all time favorites.

The eponymous Murphy's Law debut is perhaps one of the most rocking New York punk releases to appear in the '80s. The manic tempos, masochistic vocals, and other hardcore signatures are toned down here to better suit the group's party message. Apolitical when compared to hard-line contemporaries like Cro-Mags and Agnostic Front, Murphy's Law shoots for an inebriated slice-of-life essence more aligned with Boston's Gang Green. The right-wing and skinhead references didn't exactly sit well with some '80s punk observers who mistakenly labeled the band as fascist. But even a casual study of California Pipeline and Ilsa reveals an allegiance contrary to the skinhead stereotype. Highlights include the Ace Frehley-inspired guitar work on Skinhead Rebel as well as the rockabilly Wahoo Day groove. A must-have for fans of the group and a strong recommendation for any '80s punk scholar, Murphy's Law is simply a fun ride.

The beautiful breakthrough album of Chris Whitley was released in 1991 and was immediate proof of his brilliant songwriting.

In a time when upbeat Pop Rock dominated the hit charts, Living With The Law had a somewhat dark and introvert quality. Its richness surfaces in the use of old-fashioned sounds such as slide guitars and banjos against a backdrop of subtly arranged rhythm tracks, whilst all the time carrying the splendid timbre of his voice. The native Texan tackles subjects such as drug abuse, loneliness and failure, making Living With The Law an incredibly honest and compelling album.

Living With The Law put Chris Whitley on the map, albeit under the radar of mainstream audiences. This is your chance to let Whitley in your life on heavy 180 gram vinyl!

    The 2nd Law

Muse didn't set out to make the most gloriously ambitious album of their career. How could they have? The band who dreamt up Supermassive Black Hole, Knights Of Cydonia and the three-part Exogenesis symphony were already well-versed in going One Louder. Any wilder, any further out there, and Muse would risk incineration by a dwarf star of their own making.

But you don't become one of the biggest bands on this planet - in excess of 15 million albums sales worldwide, 5 MTV Europe Awards, 2 Brit Awards, 8 NME Awards, 5 Q Awards, 4 Kerrang Awards and winner of the Best Rock Album Grammy 2011; No 1 in 19 countries with 2009's The Resistance; filler of arena and stadia across the world - by sitting on your hands.

So when Muse approached the making of their sixth studio album, they wouldn't stint on the choirs, strings and horn sections. And be reassured: guitar-shredding, piano-thumping, orchestra-arranging, book-chewing, big-thinking Matt Bellamy, as the band's chief songwriter, didn't lower his sights from The Big Picture nor ignore The Precious Details. And nor were the trio afraid of giving space to a brilliant new element to their sound - songs written and sung by bass player Chris Wolstenholme.

But what the Devon-born band of schoolfriends did do different was this: they made things easy for themselves. For the first time since the dawn of their career in smalltown England 18 years ago, all three members were living in the same place during the making of an album. Domiciled in and around London, they block-booked a recording studio - Air - and came and went as they pleased.

This time, the only clock Muse had to beat was their own internal band rhythm. They had the days and weeks and space to experiment, explore ideas, rig up massive in-studio PA systems, hire in remixers, play with pedals, and (technical term alert!) fanny around to their hearts' content.

Back With A Bong! (Awaiting Repress)

As angrily socio-political as so much punk rock tended to be, the genre also gave us quite a few bands that preferred goofy madcap humor over social or political commentary -- including the Ramones and the Dickies. Murphy's Law, a band that came out of New York's mid-'80s punk scene, was among the genre's goofiest. The aggressively rockin' Back with a Bong! isn't a record that's heavy on political content -- song titles like Panty Raid, Cavity Creeps and Attack Oof the Killer Beers underscore the fact that wild, irreverent fun is the primarily goal of the Astoria, Queens residents. Profile Records -- which had become one of the largest independent labels thanks to rappers like Run-D.M.C. and Dana Dane -- turned to Murphy's Law in the hope of increasing its visibility in rock. The album wasn't a big seller, although the punkers did command a small following.

Livin' Like Hustlers is the debut album by the Rap group Above the Law, released in February 1990. Production for the album came from Dr. Dre (who was in N.W.A at the time), as well as Above the Law and LayLaw. Eazy-E (also a member of N.W.A) executive produced the album and performed on The Last Song as well.

The song Murder Rap was featured on the fictional radio station Radio Los Santos in the video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas as well as the 2009 film Pineapple Express. Freedom Of Speech appeared on the soundtrack to the 1990 Christian Slater film Pump Up The Volume.

In 1998, the album was selected as one of The Source's 100 Best Rap Albums Ever. A perfect West Coast Hip Hop record from the Golden Age of Rap.

Library Catalog Music Series: Music for Measurements

This is a series of instrumental albums designed for possible use in film and TV, for home or office background sounds, or for personal needs, such as relaxation, stimulation, meditation, concentration, or elation. Asthmatic Kitty asked a select group of talented artists to create a unique recording for this collection. Law Of The Least Effort is the name under which Casey Foubert records his instrumental compositions. An homage to 60s and 70s session bands like The Meters, Booker T. And The MGs, The Funk Brothers, the JB's, and guitar players like Clarence White, Link Wray, and JJ Cale.

    Quasi-Hallucinogenic Sonic Landscapes

The brainchild of left-handed lead guitarist and founding member Eric Hersemann, Gigan has been challenging the mortal laws of musical extremes since early 2006. Forged around the simple notion that the imagination should be art's only limit, Gigan's style of creative delivery has simultaneously invoked reactions of amazement, disbelief, shock, awe and ultimately respect.

Featuring the same boundary pushing extremity but also some new elements, instruments and approaches to delivery, Quasi-Hallucinogenic Sonic Landscapes is bound to surprise and delight new and old Gigan devotees alike. Limited edition gatefold colored LP.

    Land

Novella's formation was the result of an instant spark-guitarist Hollie Warren,
guitarist Sophy Hollington, and bassist Suki Sou met through mutual friends in
Brighton in 2010, where they quickly realized that they shared a common
love for '60s counterculture and bands like Black Sabbath, the Brian Jonestown
Massacre, and Pale Saints. The addition of drummer Iain Laws in 2011
and keyboardist Isabel Spurgeon in 2014 solidified the group into a propulsive
engine, capable of welding woozy, cosmic psychedelia to sustained
squalls of flanged-out, far-out dream pop. Novella's debut album, Land, is a
controlled blast of mainlined electricity, a tempest of relentless groove and
crystalline vocals that is at once the vicious edge and the calm eye of the
    storm.

Recorded during one ice-cold week in January of 2014 by Jonas Verijnen
(Moon Duo, Ballet School) and Joshua Third (The Horrors) in an abandoned
clothing factory-turned-studio in Dalston, East London, Land perfectly absorbs
the band's vast array of influences and transforms them into songs
that Fact Magazine described as "equal parts effete jangle and ferocious
riffage." Combining London gloom and cosmic escapism, Sou and Laws
channel Can and the 13th Floor Elevators on the krautrock-inspired jams like
"Follow" and "Something Must Change," while Warren and Hollington stomp
their homemade flanger and phaser pedals to create dueling arcs of electric
guitars. As the band churns and riffs, the girls' voices soar brilliantly, their
glassy clarity recalling the Lynchian shoegaze of Lush or Stereolab. During
quieter, more reflective songs like "Sentences" and "Younger Than Yesterday,"
there are echoes of eerie psychedelia like Broadcast, evident in the myriad
of flutes, synths, and Fender Electric XII guitars.

On Land, Novella captures the wild spirit of creating something new from
pieces of the past. They ward off the overcast London melancholy with
evocative tales of weightless meandering, of drifting over the pavement of
familiar streets while dreaming about exploring fantastical alien landscapes.
These are the yarns of twenty-somethings in limbo, a collection of late night
tales that more often end in avoided glances than locked eyes

Library Catalog Music Series: Music For Primordial Recollections

By day, InfinitRock is an 18 year old biology student at SUNY Purchase, by
night a fuzzed glitch and fump hip-hop producer. In second grade he was
digesting The RZA and Aphex Twin and has been making instrumentals since
the age of six. As a son to parents from India, he would also hear a lot
of classical indian music around the house and since he could not
understand hindi, voices became instruments rather than a lyrical tool.
His music reflects the conceptualization of sounds, and what makes music
music and the world musical. InfinitiRock draws inspiration from the
everyday, incorporating their sounds into his music. Music for Primordial
Recollection contains a motif of sounds and rhythms that trigger ancient
memories. Ambient layers and interludes featuring field recordings of wind
chimes, children playing, glass breaking, the chewing of raw pasta, the
crumpling of paper bags, and flowing water. The album is an auditory
documentation of the evolution of entropic sound, tamed by the laws of
    rhythm. Everything breathes.

Together is the 5th album by Canadian-US collective The New Pornographers, featuring Neko Case and Destroyer's Dan Bejar, in addition to bandleader and chief songwriter A.C. Newman. Playing to all the New Pornographers strengths, Together combines the freewheeling, glammy spirit of their debut Mass Romantic with the very personal, emotional songwriting of their most recent material.

Stunning ballads like My Shepherd and Valkyrie In The Roller Disco are among the most beautiful melodies Newman has ever written, and singles The Crash Years and Your Hands (Together) rank among faves like The Slow Descent Into Alcoholism and The Laws Have Changed. Vocalist keyboardist Kathryn Calder's voice has never integrated so well with Case's, and Bejar's three contributions are probably his catchiest and least disjointed. Newman says he's always had a dream of finding the middle ground between Led Zeppelin and The 5th Dimension, which isn't a bad way to describe Together's mix of deceptively complex songwriting with pop hooks and arena-rock power.

    Ghost Reveries

As hard to believe as it appears there are still exceptions to the rule out there. For the past 15 years OPETH have managed to tread their very own path through a scene full of wannabes and traditionalists without ever heeding metal laws or fashion trends. Death metal was trasnformed into a melting pot in the hands of OPETH who added goth, 70s-prog-rock, folk and even elements of jazz with great skill transcending each genre in turn.

After their sonic double assault that was Deliverance and Damnation - one heavy to the point of bursting, the latter ballad-oriented - no-one thought it possible that OPETH would be able to cap it all off with Ghost Reveries. They did so with ease. Ghost Reveries is positively brimming with grand emotions, brutal riffs, spherical guitars, acoustic breaks, epic keyboards, rocking organs, enchanting solos and vocals reaching from downright evil to heart-breakingly beautiful. You can detect MORBID ANGEL just as well as PINK FLOYD, KING CRIMSON and NICK DRAKE.

Let Ghost Reveries be your personal expedition. Metal by and for visionaries.

    Donovan Blanc

Joseph Black and Raymond Schwab spent the years of 2011-2013 as full-blown pop junkies
in a group called Honeydrum. Seeking ephemeral moments of truth and self-relevance, the
two spent day after day on the third floor of a run-down building in a hole of a city in New
Jersey, churning out what would become Honeydrum's nine EPs. These releases stand as sonic
manifestations of the two hook addicts' pop addled brainwaves buried deep in blurry mires
    of fizz and fuzz.

As with all growth both physical and metaphysical, the inevitable mutation of their vision was
governed by evolutionary laws beholden to no man; atop a cloud of rich vocal harmony,
polished guitar arrangements, driving rhythmic momentum, angular meter and key changes,
and breathy Mellotron passages, Donovan Blanc, a post-human entity began to appear.
Incubated by the warm winds of spring and with a newfound focus and clarity, early versions of songs such as "Minha Menina" and "Girlfriend", rife with brown tones and muted
sunshine, served as the foundation for Donovan Blanc's debut self-titled LP on Captured
    Tracks.

Donovan Blanc is the realization of a purified version of the duo's work, fit for consumption by disciples of technicolor baroque and singer-songwriter pop music. The record's aim
isn't to evoke nostalgia, but rather to re-contextualize the familiar and foreign to create new
moments; some that are bold and exuberant, and others that are reserved and melancholic.
Donovan Blanc delivers a glimpse of the lush textures and vivid colors of pop's golden age
    through a modern lens.
