Feels LikeBully is the name for the Nashville quartet that is transforming familiar '90s alt-rock (Dinosaur Jr, Pavement, Weezer) into smart, sharp-edged millennial indie rock - an apt description for the band's churning guitars, rambunctious rhythms, and tightly coiled intensity. Their debut Feels Like sounds alternately like a balled fist and a fresh bruise.
Bully is also the perfect distillation of frontwoman Alicia Bognanno's visceral approach to songwriting. She trades in steely observations, raw-nerve confessions, and intense anger directed almost exclusively at herself although a few bystanders and bad exes might get caught in the crossfire. Her voice rises from sugar-sweet to scratchy howl as she bares her most harrowing fears to the world. In other words, Bognanno is her own bully. Not merely the band's vocalist, songwriter, guitarist, and all-around visionary, she is also Bully's producer and engineer.
Based in Nashville, Alicia Bognanno formed Bully essentially as a solo project backed by a trio of friends: Stewart Copeland on drums, Clayton Parker on guitar, and Reece Lazarus on bass. Bully is less a studio entity than a stage act, one that has quickly developed a reputation for its ferocious live shows (the Nashville Scene named Bully the top local band in its 2014 Best of Nashville issue.)
On record, Bully strives to retain the band s formidable guitar attack while highlighting her boldly candid lyrics. The band recorded Feels Like live in the studio, doing as few takes as possible. Once they'd gotten a good performance, the songs were mixed immediately, not merely to save time but to preserve the excitable urgency of the music. Overseeing every part of the process put extra pressure on Bognanno to deliver some truly unbridled vocal performances. A deeply personal album by an artist bravely mining her own life, Feels Like is all about trying to figure yourself out about holding yourself accountable and acting like an adult in a society that doesn't offer very many good examples.1. Like MirageMoholy-Nagy is the moniker of San Francisco /
Berlin-based musicians Jefre Cantu-Ledesma (The
Alps), Danny Paul Grody (The Drift) and Trevor
Montgomery (Lazarus, The Drift). The trio are the
founding members of Tarentel a group that helped
inspired a decades worth of widescreen ambient rock
and Like Mirage reunites them for the first time since
that group's sophomore album, The Order of Things,
was released almost a decade ago.
Recorded and mixed by Phil Manley of Trans Am and
The Fucking Champs, Like Mirage is the culmination
of many months of improvisation, exploration and a
few scattered live performances in the Bay Area.
Although beginning with no particular sound or vision
in mind, the groups interest slowly began to revolve
around electric bass, analogue synthesizers, and the
steady pulse of the drum machine. Expanding their
pallet while in the recording studio to include piano,
acoustic and electric guitars and the live drums of
Damon Palermo (Jonas Reinhardt, Mi Ami), the
group bottled a vibrant landscape that recalls the late
70's explosion of cosmic and new age music as if it
were a sunset descending on the damp streets of San
Francisco.1. Tears Of The Prophet

LosingWhile Bully's 2013 debut Feels Like tumbled headlong into the precarious nature of Alicia Bognanno's young adult life, its follow-up Losing is their first for Sub Pop (which in many ways feels like their spiritual home; Bully's sound is an outgrowth of the bands the label championed in the late '80s and '90s). Losing is a document of the complexity of growth: navigating breakups with sensitivity, learning not to flee from your troubles but to face them down no matter how messy they may be ("Well, this isn't the summer I wanted," she muses on "Blame," before admitting that she's trying to "cut down on booze and you"). Written as the group slowed down from touring constantly and Bognanno attempted to adjust to how different a home schedule is from a road schedule, her songwriting has matured from the quick one-two punches of Feels Like to tracks that contemplate the necessity of space in both song structure and emotion. Bognanno's gruff yet dynamic voice is allowed to bloom, and it has a tenderness and openness to it here that's new. There are multiple layers of wistfulness and care to her delivery of lines like "It just takes one disagreement for you to remember the one time I fucked up," from "Spiral," turning songs that could be one-dimensional kiss-offs into warm and complex expressions of regret.
The group returned to Electrical Audio in Chicago, another home for Bognanno, to record Losing. Their core-Bognanno, guitarist Clayton Parker, and bassist Reece Lazarus-truly solidified during the process, a detail-oriented push for perfection in which each moving part was labored over and polished. Emily Lazar's mastering adds the perfect cap to Bognanno's engineering; this is a record that has both shimmer and heft. There's power in the guitar attack, delicacy and toughness in the melodic hooks, precision in the drums, and backbone in the bass.
While Bognanno wouldn't call this a political record, she doesn't deny that the current political atmosphere and its urgency and tension haven't shaped some of her ideas on this record, too-though she does not want that to be its focus. Mostly, this is an internal record, a universalized diary, and an exorcism-not of any one specific demon, but of the host of them that characterize contemporary anxieties. Bully is growing up, sure, but their fire is in no way diminishing.1. Feel the Same
