    Led Zeppelin I (Deluxe Edition)

    Deluxe Edition Remastered Vinyl

Remastered from the Original Master Tapes by Jimmy Page and Pressed at Pallas In Germany

Features Previously Unreleased October 1969 Concert From Paris, France

Led Zeppelin had a fully formed, distinctive sound from the outset, as their eponymous debut illustrates. Taking the heavy, distorted electric blues of Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, and Cream to an extreme, Zeppelin created a majestic, powerful brand of guitar rock constructed around simple, memorable riffs and lumbering rhythms. But the key to the group's attack was subtlety: it wasn't just an onslaught of guitar noise, it was shaded and textured, filled with alternating dynamics and tempos. As Led Zeppelin proves, the group was capable of such multi-layered music from the start. Although the extended psychedelic blues of Dazed and Confused, You Shook Me, and I Can't Quit You Baby often gather the most attention, the remainder of the album is a better indication of what would come later. Babe I'm Gonna Leave You shifts from folky verses to pummeling choruses; Good Times Bad Times and How Many More Times have groovy, bluesy shuffles; Your Time Is Gonna Come is an anthemic hard rocker; Black Mountain Side is pure English folk; and Communication Breakdown is a frenzied rocker with a nearly punkish attack. Although the album isn't as varied as some of their later efforts, it nevertheless marked a significant turning point in the evolution of hard rock and heavy metal.

    Led Zeppelin III

Remastered from the Original Master Tapes by Jimmy Page and Pressed at Pallas In Germany

On their first two albums, Led Zeppelin unleashed a relentless barrage of heavy blues and rockabilly riffs, but Led Zeppelin III provided the band with the necessary room to grow musically. While there are still a handful of metallic rockers, III is built on a folky, acoustic foundation that gives the music extra depth. And even the rockers aren't as straightforward as before: the galloping Immigrant Song is powered by Robert Plant's banshee wail, Celebration Day turns blues-rock inside out with a warped slide guitar riff, and Out on the Tiles lumbers along with a tricky, multi-part riff. Nevertheless, the heart of the album lies on the second side, when the band delve deeply into English folk. Gallows Pole updates a traditional tune with a menacing flair, and Bron-Y-Aur Stomp is an infectious acoustic romp, while That's the Way and Tangerine are shimmering songs with graceful country flourishes. The band hasn't left the blues behind, but the twisted bottleneck blues of Hats off to (Roy) Harper actually outstrips the epic Since I've Been Loving You, which is the only time Zeppelin sound a bit set in their ways.

    Does Led Zeppelin II

Multi-platinum and Grammy winning San Francisco band TRAIN is set to pay homage to one of their biggest musical inspirations with the release of the first cover album of their career, LED ZEPPELIN II. The 9-track album follows the original Led Zeppelin II track listing including classic hit songs such as Ramble On and Whole Lotta Love. The band has famously covered Zeppelin their entire career in live shows. All of the band's proceeds from this album will go to their charity of record, Family House in San Francisco, of which they've been huge supporters for years.

The decision to do a Led Zeppelin cover album took shape when the band recently performed the complete Led Zeppelin II album on this year's annual Sail Across the Sun cruise. Our favorite band is Led Zeppelin, we love the band, they made a huge impression on our lives musically. So I thought, why don't we record an album just for the fun of it for our fans, said lead singer Pat Monahan. The hard part was deciding which one.

    Lucifer I

Restless creative spirits never sleep and class is eternal. Thus, the timely and welcome return of Johanna Sadonis is only to be expected. Despite the sudden and distinctly premature disintegration of her previous band The Oath in 2014, Johanna's passion for making music that touches the darkest recesses of the soul has blazed on. The result is Lucifer - a new manifestation of the Berlin-based singer and songwriter's extraordinary and potent musical vision.

Although still firmly rooted in the fertile soil first cultivated by Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Blue Oyster Cult, Lucifer exist in a proudly liberated and limitless sonic realm, where the heaviest blues rock is a mere starting point for the band's skyward creative trajectory. Lucifer's instinctive take on the very soul of early heavy metal is the electrified essence of rock'n'roll at its nascent purest. This is Magic Rock - heavy, heartfelt and holistic.

Eschewing the now well-worn clichÉs of the occult rock explosion in favour of a truthful and tempestuous re-imagining of classic 70s proto-metal and turbocharged blues, the two songs on this band's debut seven-inch single crackle and fizz with nascent energy and the compelling conviction of music made for all the right reasons. Boasting a sound that revels in exquisite analogue warmth without ever retreating into some nostalgic ghetto, both 'Anubis' and 'Morning Star' came to life at Candy Bomber studios in Berlin, under the supervision of aural wizard Ingo Krauss, a one-time apprentice of legendary Krautrock producer Connie Plank. With the finest and most unique collection of old school analogue equipment, from tape machines to vintage amps, Candy Bomber provided Lucifer with everything they needed to realize their potent vision.

Lucifer represents the culmination of a spontaneous and intuitive creative mind-meld, wherein their leader's kaleidoscopic focus collides with the heavy soul abandon of earthbound but astrally-inspired musicians at the top of their game. With songs crafted by Johanna and Cathedral legend Gaz Jennings - the first Lucifer release is a mesmerizing glimpse into the sumptuous depths that await us further down the evolutionary trail.

After the release of their debut seven-inch via Rise Above Records in February, Lucifer releases their debut full length, Lucifer I. While Johanna states that this first release does give some indication of the musical direction that this band will pursue, there is a strong sense that these songs are merely a prologue to the much deeper and more substantial body of work to come. Meanwhile, the band intend to hit the road to spread the news of Magic Rock to as many willing sinners as possible. With a solid line-up, a renewed sense of collective purpose and the invigorating effects of creative adrenalin propelling them forward, Lucifer is a glowing advertisement for fresh starts, clarity of vision and the rejuvenative powers of heavy music. Lucifer lives!

    You & I

Jeff Buckley's first recording sessions in 1993 in NYC were largely an informal exercise to acclimate the 27-year-old with a recording studio. Recently discovered in the Sony Music archives during the research for the 20th anniversary edition of Buckley's Grace album, the performances on You And I are a revelation, an intimate portrait of the artist performing a variety of cover songs and original music expressing a range of emotion channeled through his singular sensibility.

These intimate, raw and spirited sessions mark Buckley's first time recording versions of electric cover songs such as Bob Dylan's "Just Like A Woman," Sly & The Family Stone's "Everyday People," and Led Zeppelin's "Night Flight" and a previously unissued track, "Dream of You And I."

Long rumored to exist, as the "Addabbo sessions", but previously unheard outside the studio, these seminal recordings are a fan's Holy Grail, a rare opportunity to hear Jeff Buckley in peak form, developing his artistry through a series of spellbinding solo performances, each one captured in pristine sonic detail.

Any time I take a cover and wear it on my sleeve, it's because it had something to do with my life and still marks a time in my life when I needed that song more than anything ever. -- Jeff Buckley, 1994

Chicago Bluesman Willie Dixon was perhaps best known for his songwriting. He wrote or co-wrote over 500 songs and his songs have been recorded by some of the best-known blues musicians of his era, including Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter, and Buddy Guy.

Later, his songs were popularized by groups, such as The Rolling Stones, The Doors, Cream, and Led Zeppelin, whose Whole Lotta Love was loosely based don Dixon´s You Need Love. On this 1970 LP, the quintessential blues songwriter performs his own tunes - every one a classic: I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man, The Little Red Rooster, Spoonful and of course Back Door Man to name a few!

Long overdue, the album was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1986, whereas Willie Dixon was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.

    Tell Me I Belong

Jim-E Stack has come a long way. Born and raised in San Francisco, the now
Brooklyn-based artist born James Harmon Stack cut his musical teeth as a jazz
drummer, but it wasn't until he entered the world of solo production at the age of 16
that he found the freedom necessary to write and record how he wanted. After seeing a set from Fade to Mind boss Kingdom in 2009, freeform DJ sets and hybridized
club music planted the seeds of inspiration in the burgeoning producer. He made
his first splash with a bass-loaded remix of Nuguzunguzu's "Mirage", and went on
to release the bright and drum-focused Come Between EP, garnering acclaim from
    international DJs and tastemakers alike.

Following time spent in New Orleans, James moved to New York in summer of 2012,
and started the slow process of sketching, refining, and developing the diverse tracks
that would make up his captivating Tell Me I Belong LP. The album was equally
fleshed out by looking forwards and backwards, which gives it the kind of purpose
and cohesiveness many debut outings lack. In every corner of Tell Me I Belong, you
can hear an artist who reveres classic jazz musicians like John Coltrane and McCoy
Tyner, experimental pioneers like Steve Reich, and Detroit techno greats Omar-S
and Robert Hood, but contemporary boundary pushers Arca, Oneohtrix Point Never,
and Actress are no less inspiring for Stack. "More so than anything, it's really on
some personal shit," he says of the themes woven into his debut LP. "The time period
between leaving San Francisco and moving to New York was a tough time for me,
and the music is kind of a reflection of that, the feeling like you don't belong." The
music may speak about a kind of alienation, but it also abundantly offers the chance
of collective experiences in the form of hard-hitting, club-specific dancefloor jams.
That fearless juxtaposition is the lifeforce of Tell Me I Belong.

BBC Sessions was originally released in 1997 and has been certified double platinum by the RIAA. THE COMPLETE BBC SESSIONS builds on that collection with a third disc that boasts eight unreleased performances. In addition, the set includes extensive session-by-session liner notes written by Dave Lewis. For the first time ever, it provides accurate details and notes about all of the band's BBC sessions.

Musical highlights on this new collection include the debut of a long-lost radio session that has achieved near-mythic status among fans. Originally broadcast in April 1969, the session included three songs: I Can't Quit You Baby, You Shook Me, and the only recorded performance of Sunshine Woman.

Also included are two unreleased versions of both Communication Breakdown and What Is And What Should Never Be. Separated by two years, the performances vividly demonstrate the young band's rapid evolution over a short period of time.

Jimmy Page spoke about the band's growth in an interview with Guitar World: The BBC Sessions show in graphic detail just how organic the group was. Led Zeppelin was a band that would change things around substantially each time it played...We were becoming tighter and tighter, to the point of telepathy.

Speaking with Wall of Sound, John Paul Jones added: We'd been on the road a lot by the time those sessions were recorded. The albums were always the starting point of the music, and then we'd take it out and expand it on the road. Then we'd come straight off the road into those BBC studios.

Recalling the BBC experience in an interview with Mojo, Robert Plant said: The whole thing was very quaint: the politeness of the audience, the technicians fumbling about, proper hallowed low-key introductions. Like there was some sort of holy moment about to occur.

In 1968, Jimmy Page formed Led Zeppelin, one of the most influential, innovative and successful groups in modern music, having sold more than 300 million albums worldwide. The band rose from the ashes of The Yardbirds, when Page brought in Robert Plant, John Bonham and John Paul Jones. In 1969, Led Zeppelin released its self-titled debut which was produced by Jimmy Page, as were all the subsequent albums. It marked the beginning of a 12-year reign, during which the group was widely considered to be the biggest and most innovative rock band in the world.

Led Zeppelin continues to be honored for its pivotal role in music history. The band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1995, received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005, and a year later was awarded the Polar Music Prize in Stockholm. Founding members Page, Plant, and Jones, and along with Jason Bonham, the son of John Bonham - took the stage at London's O2 Arena in 2007 to headline a tribute concert for Ahmet Ertegun, a dear friend and Atlantic Records' founder. The band was honored for its lifetime contribution to American culture at the Kennedy Center Honors in 2012. In January of 2014, the band won their first ever Grammy award as Celebration Day, which captured their live performance at the Ertegun tribute concert, was named Best Rock Album. The last two years saw an unprecedented reissue campaign of all nine of the band's studio albums, which achieved Top 10 chart status around the globe whilst also garnering 5-star reviews and other critical accolades along the way.

The Complete BBC Sessions (Deluxe Edition)

    Pressed on 180 Gram Vinyl

Newly Remastered With Supervision By Jimmy Page

Includes A Fifth LP Of Unreleased Audio

The Lights From The Chemical Plant

Produced by Jacquire King (Tom Waits, Kings Of Leon),
Robert Ellis' 2nd album, THE LIGHTS FROM THE CHEMICAL
PLANT, continues his journey into folk music he began 3 years
ago. The songs on the new record, which range from the majestic
string-adorned title track to noir pop rock and somber confessionals,
all show Ellis' growth and the various sides of this multidimensional
songwriter. Ellis recently told Rolling Stone THE LIGHTS FROM THE CHEMICAL
PLANT is "stylistically ambiguous," as he is
inspired by a wide variety of artists. "On this record I was trying
to channel everything from Paul Simon, Randy Newman and Bill
Withers, to free jazz artists like Ornette Coleman," Ellis explained.

    lullaby and... The Ceaseless Roar

Robert Plant's new album, lullaby and The Ceaseless Roar, will be released on Nonesuch/Warner Bros. Records. Produced by Plant, the album is his label debut and features 11 new recordings, nine of which are original songs written by Plant with his band, The Sensational Space Shifters-Justin Adams: bendirs, djembe, guitars, tehardant, background vocals; John Baggott: keyboards, loops, moog bass, piano, tabal, background vocals; Juldeh Camara: kologo, ritti, Fulani vocals; Billy Fuller: bass, drum programming, omnichord, upright bass; Dave Smith: drum set; and Liam "Skin" Tyson: banjo, guitar, background vocals.

lullaby and The Ceaseless Roar is Plant's first record since 2010's Band of Joy, which followed 2007's six-time Grammy Award-winning collaboration with Alison Krauss, Raising Sand. Justin Adams and John Baggott of The Sensational Space Shifters appeared on Plant's 2002 release Dreamland, while all but Camara and Smith appeared on 2005's Mighty Rearranger. The new-album line-up recently toured the world before recording lullaby and The Ceaseless Roar at Helium Studios in Wiltshire and Real World Studios in Bath, UK. The track "Rainbow" was recorded in Contino Rooms in London. Tchad Blake mixed all but three tracks on the album.

"It's really a celebratory record, powerful, gritty, African, Trance meets Zep," Plant says. "The whole impetus of my life as a singer has to be driven by a good brotherhood. I am very lucky to work with The Sensational Space Shifters. They come from exciting areas of contemporary music I have been around awhile and I ask myself, do I have anything to say? Is there a song still inside me? In my heart? I see life and what's happening to me. Along the trail there are expectations, disappointments, happiness, questions and strong relationships," Plant explains, "... and now I'm able to express my feelings through melody, power and trance; together in a kaleidoscope of sound, colour, and friendship."

    Carry Fire

Carry Fire, Robert Plant's eleventh solo album and first full-length release since 2014's acclaimed lullaby and... The Ceaseless Roar, was produced by Plant in the west of England and Wales, at Top Cat studio in Box, Wiltshire with additional recordings at Real World and Rockfield studios. As with lullaby, Plant is accompanied by The Sensational Space Shifters: John Baggott on keyboards, moog, loops, percussion, drums, brass arrangement, t'bal, snare drum, slide guitar, piano, electric piano, bendir; Justin Adams on guitar, acoustic guitar, oud, E-bow quartet, percussion, snare drum, tambourine; Dave Smith on bendir, tambourine, djembe, drum kit; and Liam Skin Tyson on dobro, guitar, acoustic guitar, pedal steel, twelve-string.

Plant and the Space Shifters are also joined on Carry Fire by a number of special guests. Chrissie Hynde joins Plant on the duet Bluebirds Over the Mountain (written by rockabilly legend Ersel Hickey and later recorded by both Richie Valens and The Beach Boys). Albanian cellist Redi Hasa performs on three tracks, as does the celebrated Seth Lakeman on viola and fiddle.

Plant and the Space Shifters (which now includes Lakeman) celebrate Carry Fire's release by beginning a world tour in November 2017 starting in UK & Ireland and touring all corners of globe from thereon.

Plant and the band spent two years on the road together supporting lullaby and... The Ceaseless Roar, their unique sound and vision ultimately evolving into something even more creative and powerful.

Plant, who lived in Texas for a time before returning to his native England three years ago, together with his friends, present the songs Carry Fire, melding unusual rhythms with naturalism and smoldering power.

It's about intention, I respect and relish my past works but each time I feel the lure and incentive to create new work. I must mix old with new. Consequently the whole impetus of the band has moved on its axis somewhat, the new sound and different space giving way to exciting and dramatic landscapes of mood, melody and instrumentation.

    Bones

On The Delta Saints' new album, Bones, their first for Loud & Proud Records, the Nashville-based band have stripped their roots/blues sound down to its essence, having rearranged the elements into something uniquely their own. Steeped in rock 'n' roll's building blocks - country, R&B, soul and gospel - The Delta Saints' second full-length effort explores influences like Jack White, The Black Keys, My Morning Jacket, Band of Horses and Led Zeppelin. Producer/engineer/mixer and Third Man Records alum, Eddie Spear [Jack White, Arctic Monkeys, Neil Young] provided a ghostly, psychedelic atmosphere at Nashville's Sputnik Sound studios, yielding a sound unlike anything they have created before.

"We got to the point where what we were recording and playing had veered from what we were listening to and loving on our turntables, which can lead to discontent," said Louisiana-born singer/lyricist Ben Ringel, who co-founded the band almost eight years ago with fellow Belmont University student, Kansas native bassist David Supica. Soon after, they were joined by Tennessee-bred guitarist Dylan Fitch and later, after a health scare with the band's former harmonica player, enlisted Louisville resident and keyboardist, Nate Kremer, who was added to the lineup only two weeks before a two month long European tour.

Taking a novel approach of writing songs spontaneously in the studio, The Delta Saints were challenged to create in the moment and as a result, Bones is their most adventurous effort yet. The album is a collection of eclectic songs, beginning with The White Stripes-meets-Led Zeppelin fuzz-toned garage-rock blast of "Sometimes I Worry." The spare, spooky strains of "Butte la Rose" tell the band's tale of a Louisiana town purposely flooded and displaced five years ago to save New Orleans. The Grapes of Wrath drama of "Dust," based on Ringel's grandfather, an East Kansas farmer, builds to a primal wail at nature with a stunning coda in which Dylan Fitch's guitar drops out and Kremer's B3 organ provides the climax. The title track, "Bones" features hoodoo organ riffs and African-influenced trance music, which came from listening to the Sahara desert African groove of Niger's Tuareg guitarist Omara "Bombino" Moctar and Mali's Tinariwen. The grindhouse honky-tonk chain gang chants of "Heavy Hammer" celebrates the work ethic in no uncertain terms, a call for unity in the wake of Ringel's frustration about getting stuck in the rat race and feeling trapped by some of life's mundane tasks. "Berlin," the first song they recorded after adding Nate on keys, started out as an instrumental penned in the title city while on tour. It eventually metamorphosed into a country twang intro and a prog-rock jam. Bones is a complete work veering between despair and apocalyptic dread.

"We're trying to push ourselves forward to do something more modern, but at the same time incorporating where we come from," explained Ringel.

"It was incredible to be able to write a song on the spot and immediately hear what it sounded like," added Supica. "It was a great way to capture the magic right when you come up with an idea, preserving that raw element. We were used to playing a song for months on the road before we recorded it. Still, on the flip side, it was absolutely terrifying to sit in the studio watching the clock tick and waiting for a song to come out. That's where (producer) Ed Spear came into play; he was so good at keeping us pointed in the right direction."

"This record was made out of both necessity and desire. We needed to be fulfilled and surprised by music again, and we also needed to fulfill that love of writing and recording again."

The Delta Saints have independently released two EPs (2010's Pray On and A Bird Called Angola), a full-length album (2012's Death Letter Jubilee) and a live disc (2014's Live at Exit/In). They have spent the last eight years touring the US averaging almost 200 shows per year, organically growing their audience, fan by fan, city by city. Major appearances include several festivals including Wakarusa, Summer Camp, Harvest, The Ride, Summerfest and The Simple Man Cruise. A testament to their mixed appeal, they have opened for such diverse acts as Blackberry Smoke, Robert Randolph & The Family Band, Taj Mahal, Dickey Betts and Michael Franti & Spearhead.

The Delta Saints have also have a large international fan base having toured Europe a total of six times, selling out countless venues and playing more than 200 shows in Spain, Sweden, France, Switzerland and Germany, as well as several festivals in Holland (Moulin Blues, Ribs and Blues), Belgium (Gevarenwinkel) and Germany (Grolsch Blues Fest).

With all that they've accomplished as a hard-working group on their own, The Delta Saints have earned their graduation to industry veteran Tom Lipsky's Loud & Proud Records (which has been the home of Rush, Lynyrd Skynyrd, KISS, Robert Plant, Rob Zombie, Lenny Kravitz and The String Cheese Incident, among others).

"Don't look so tired, my dear," sings Ringel in Bones' closing track, "Berlin," echoing the band's progress. "We may be bruised, but the day is almost here."

"It's hard to see progress when you're in the middle of things," said Supica about The Delta Saints' ambitions. "We try to take stock every six months or so and look back from where we've come, from eating at McDonald's and sleeping on people's floors to staying at a Motel 6 and graduating to La Quinta. We mark our success by the hotel chain where we're staying. When we get to Marriott, we know we've made it."

Bones proves The Delta Saints are well on their way to making that reservation.

A Rainer Ptacek Tribute: The Inner Flame

    Import

Fire Records is proud to be reissuing the complete works of Rainer Ptacek, the phenomenal and much beloved slide guitarist from Tucson, Arizona, who originated Giant Sand's sound from the band's inception, as well as creating many remarkable recordings as a solo artist and with his own band, Das Combo, before succumbing to brain cancer on November 12, 1997.

The reissues start with The Inner Flame, a compilation of accomplished and remarkably diverse artists who were brought together to honor Rainer's inspirational work, featuring talents such as Robert Plant & Jimmy Page, Emmylou Harris, Evan Dando, PJ Harvey, Victoria Williams, Vic Chesnutt, Jonathan Richman, Madeleine Peyroux and of course Giant Sand.

Originally released in 1997, the album was conceived as both a tribute and benefit album, with the proceeds going towards Ptacek's medical bills. Reissued now as a celebration of his remarkable life and extraordinary talent, extra tracks have been added by the likes of Lucinda Williams, Grandaddy, Chuck Prophet, John Wesley Harding and Calexico's Joey Burns & John Convertino.

We offer up this new version to pay tribute and celebrate the man, the likes of whom I've yet to ever encounter again, and allowing a glimpse now of what he had done here on the planet and to share that embrace for ever having known him at all.

The best way here to sum up the man is perhaps by his own quote. Near the end, during his final interview, when asked the impossible question of what he thinks we are all doing here in this life, Rainer answered without hesitation: to love away the pain.

    Written In Chalk

Buddy and Julie Miller have been writing and making music together since they first me and married over 20 years ago. Whether the end result was a Buddy record or a Julie record, they couldn't help but collaborate and influence eachother's work. New West is now releasing their latest effort, Written In Chalk, a true collaboration. The musical synergy this couple has with each other is clear on the record and is rounded out with a thoughtful, country-soul vibe, emotional lyrics, outstanding musicianship and of course, Buddy's extraordinary guitar playing. Guests on the record include Robert Plant, Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin, Regina and Ann McCrary and Larry Campbell. Written In Chalk was recorded at the couple's home studio in Nashville, TN.

It might be the best record I've ever heard. - Don Was

My Hero. If you want to talk about how country music should be nowadays, it's Buddy Miller. - Emmylou Harris

I have been able to listen to Buddy capture the great stylistic moments of the American guitar and bring them roaring into the present - reserved, sympathetic and blistering. - Robert Plant

    To The Sea

I can't tell you anything but the truth. These words, sung by Jack Johnson in his latest studio album, To The Sea, define the ethos of a man born and raised in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Water is the subconscious, says Jack, and that water for me is the ocean. To get to the sea is being able to dig in and touch things that aren't on the surface. That reference, that we've got to get to the sea, is about a father leading his son to try to understand himself.

Johnsons fifth studio release, was co-produced by Johnson, his bandmates bassist Merlo Podlewski, keyboardist Zach Gill, and drummer Adam Topol, and Johnsons longtime engineer Robert Carranza. To The Sea was recorded at Johnsons two solar-powered studios: The Mango Tree in Hawaii and the Solar Powered Plastic Plant in Los Angeles.

King Curtis: Live At Fillmore West

    Import

Live At Fillmore West is the ultimate King Curtis live album, a brilliant confirmation of the saxophonist's place in popular music. This is the stuff of Soul legends that belongs in any record collection.

The album showcases three concerts he played with his band The Kingpins at the Fillmore West venue in San Francisco in March 1971. Those nights, the group supported Soul singer Aretha Franklin, as were they her backing band. Famed for their outstanding rhythmic interplay, the group of seasoned session men featured a.o. Cornell Dupree on guitar, Billy Preston on electric organ and Bernard 'Pretty' Purdie on drums, supported by the inimitable Memphis Horns.

Curtis rips through some of the biggest hits of the day including Stevie Wonder's Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I'm Yours) and Led Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love, transforming them into showcases for the group's soulful playing. Beautiful renditions of A Whiter Shade Of Pale and I Stand Accused are highlights, and full-throttle rockers like Changes and Memphis Soul Stew comprise the heart of the album.

Tragically only a week after its release, Curtis was stabbed to death outside his brownstone apartment in New York following an argument with two junkies. The day after he died the album peaked at No. 54 on the Billboard 200 album chart, his greatest success as a solo artist.

    The Ghost Who Walks/Stolen Roses

Karen Elson's The Ghost Who Walks marks the debut solo release from the British singer/songwriter. Her transformation from fashion's favorite redheaded ingÉnue to beguiling chanteuse has been something of a slow burn. In 2003 she provided vocals for a version of Robert Plant's ''Last Time I Saw Her'' and in 2006 she recorded an English language version of ''Je T'Aime..Moi Non Plus'' (''I Love You... Me Neither'') with Cat Power for a Serge Gainsbourg tribute album, but her main musical outlet has been as a founding member of New York City cabaret The Citizens Band, a downtown collective of musicians, performers, artists and acrobats whose lively Weimar-esque performances have enjoyed successful theatrical runs of their politically thematic shows.

Writing almost exclusively in the sanctuary of a closet in her bedroom, Karen's songwriting blossomed. A fledgling songwriter might naturally be nervous to play their work for a spouse but for Karen the trepidation was exacerbated by her husband's own talent. It took many months of cajoling for Karen to play Jack White her songs but his reaction was immediate: let's get into the studio.

Karen has already won accolades for her stunning voice, but The Ghost Who Walks is still bound to surprise those who've never seen her perform with her cabaret troupe. The songwriting is especially impressive and, as something of a music obsessive since an early age, Karen sites a long list of influences and inspirations, including Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, Sandy Denny, Opal and Rain Parade. The track The Ghost Who Walks, also the title of her forthcoming album, is a haunting murder ballad but the title came from a high school nickname which Karen endured before embarking on her fashion career. It's an apt title for an elegant and haunting album.

    Summer Skin

Summer Skin, the new album from Amy Cook is set for release on Roothouse Records/Thirty Tigers. The 12-songs on Summer Skin feature an all-star band, special cameos and Cook's strongest songwriting and recording to date. Cook successfully achieves the perfect balance between intelligent, thoughtful singer/songwriter and strong rock chick. Rolling Stone desribes Cook as "a brassier, dusty Deborah Harry."

Summer Skin represents a new plateau for Cook as an artist. "This is the happiest I've ever been with anything I've ever recorded," says Cook, "I was working with people who really were able to get into my mind and help me let go of my expectations, instead of worrying 'is this gonna rock hard enough or be rootsy enough or be smart enough.'"

Those people begin with producer Craig Street, whose long list of credits includes Norah Jones, Cassandra Wilson, Joe Henry and K.D. Lang. Then comes an all-star band, featuring David Garza (guitar), Me'Shell N'Degeocello (bass), Chris Bruce (guitar) and Jonathan Wilson (drums).

Cook had a few other friends make some special contributions to Summer Skin. Robert Plant sings harmony with Cook on the beautiful "It's Gonna Rain," and joins Patty Griffin on the moody "Airplane Driver." Ben Kweller co-wrote and sings back up on the catchy rocker "Getting To You."
