    The Look Of Love

The Look of Love doesn't tamper with Diana Krall's ongoing success, continuing the emphasis on romantic ballads and embracing them with lush string arrangements. At the core, of course, is Krall's voice. She's developing into one of the great torch singers, with an approach that's both direct and subtly nuanced, true to the song and yet deeply personal.

There's a combination of restraint and drama here, as Krall ranges from the confident to the wistful, from loss to playful insinuation, as each song requires. Cry Me a River is bittersweet triumph, while Love Letters and Maybe You'll Be There maintain the most tenuous emotional hold, at once fragile and resilient. Besame Mucho and Dancing in the Dark are sultry romances wafted on light Latin beats. The songs develop their intimacy in the setting of Krall's quartet, which usually includes bassist Christian McBride and drummer Peter Erskine and several fine guitarists, most frequently Russell Malone. They're a superb complement to her voice and piano, and the close communication carries through the depth and sheen added by Claus Ogerman's rich orchestrations. -Stuart Broomer

    Chain Letters

Includes a CD Version of The Album!

The follow up to 2011's White Hat, Chain Letters is built on a foundation of crackling fuzz bass and angular electric guitars and keyboards, Chain Letters moves away from the rustic, pastoral sound of Big Harp's debut and plays like a series of character sketches centered around escape and surrender, and the blurred borders where the two become indistinguishable.

    Letters Home

A band known for their captivating and comprehensive storytelling just as much as their elaborate and complex music, Massachusetts' Defeater recently wrapped recording their third full-length album, Letters Home, which is their absolute best work yet.

These ten new tracks are heavy and haunting, while lyrically poignant and continuing the story of a working class family living in post-WWII America. Letters Home revolves around the father of two brothers that listeners were introduced to in two of Defeater's prior releases (Travels and most recently Empty Days & Sleepless Nights), giving a background to the character and seeing some of the events from those past albums through his eyes.

Vocalist Derek Archambault commented, Inspiration for this record came from a few places. Much like with Lost Ground, these stories are based around my two grandfathers' service in WWII . He continued, Musically the record hearkens back to Travels and Lost Ground. EDSN was a bit of a departure for us, and I think we took some good chances on that record but Letters Home brings it back to why we started this band in the first place five years ago.

Letters Home is legitimately Defeater's heaviest body of music thus far - featuring powerfully intricate guitar instrumentation, colossal-sounding drums, and Archambault's voice sounding more ferocious than ever before. Guitarist Jay Maas remarked, Letters Home is more focused on sounding dirty and mean, but at the same time we have improved as songwriters so some of these ten tracks are our most accessible.

The album was once again recorded at Maas's own Getaway Recording Studio (where the band's prior releases were also tracked), and features the first recorded appearance by Defeater's new drummer Joe Longobardi who is some kind of drum wizard. His memory for organizing parts is sincerely inhuman, and he has such amazingly tasteful composition skills. Everything he plays just feels meant to be which really lends itself to an easier time for the rest of us, said Maas. Second guitarist Jake Woodruff returns for Letters Home, as well as bassist Mike Poulin, and Derek Archaumbault on vocals and Jay Maas on guitar; all lending their skills to the newest chapter in Defeater's story.

    Plastic Letters

Plastic Letters was the second and final Blondie album to be produced by Richard Gottehrer. Denis, a cover of the Randy & the Rainbows' 1963 hit Denise, was a hit all over Europe, reaching #2 in March 1978 in the United Kingdom, and was also a hit in Australia, reaching #19. (I'm Always Touched by Your) Presence, Dear was the second single from the album, reaching #10 in the UK in May 1978. The song was written by the band's original bass guitar player Gary Valentine, shortly before he left for a solo career prior to the album being recorded (which necessitated Chris Stein playing bass as well as guitar). In fact, during recording, Blondie were still at their old label, Private Stock Records. The album peaked at #10 in the UK and has been certified Platinum by the BPI.

2010 marks the metamorphosis of Cadillac Sky from a critically-acclaimed bluegrass band to a band without boundaries. With Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys at the producer's helm, Letters In The Deep corroborates Cadillac Sky's bluegrass roots, while at the same time departing into the great beyond, schlepping suitcases full of classical influences, rock and pop, on the way to expanding musical frontiers.

    Hell Bent For Letters

Alternative Tentacles tosses our well-worn thinking cap into the no-holds-barred, no-child-left-behind ring of Educore with Hell Bent for Letters, the latest outing by Seattle's BLOODHAG. Formed in 1995 to stimulate a communion between literacy and punk/metal, BLOODHAG boasts a lineup of noted science fiction authors Prof. J. B. Stratton, Dr. J. M. McNulty, Sir Zachary Orgel and the shadowy occultist Master Brent Carpenter. They created the genre of Edu-core and operate under the motto Th e faster you go deaf, the more time you have to read.

While BLOODHAG's minute-long songs have the common theme of esteemed authors such as George Orwell and Philip K. Dick--and their live shows include between-song mini-lectures as well as pelting of the audience with books--the music counters with the blunt force of bands like BRUJERIA, PANTERA, SEPULTURA, etc.

It's open to debate whether Edu-core can actually pummel literary history into the hungry minds of head-banging youth, but we certainly can't blame BLOODHAG for trying to bridge the gap between death metal tombs and Pulizerwilling tomes or the beer-soaked venues and pristine libraries (yes, they really tour public libraries).

With their neckties and pocket protectors cocked and loaded, BLOODHAG is ready to stave off the dumbing down of America. So, invest in the leaders of tomorrow! Buy Hell Bent for Letters today!

Glorifyingly hooked on demonics, they make some of the heaviest, snuggie underwear-soiling sounds this side of SPAZZ and BRUJERIA, while mixing in some Reading Rainbow, -Thrasher Magazine

River: The Joni Letters (Awaiting Repress)

The legendary pianist and innovator explores the words and music of another musical pioneer Joni Mitchell on his first new studio recording for Verve since 1998's GRAMMY® Award winner Gershwin's World. Inspired in equal parts by Mitchell's poetic lyrics and unique melodies/harmonies, the musicians play with a restraint and elegance that achieves a perfect balance between the adventurous aesthetics of jazz improvisation and the emotional directness of one of the finest singer/songwriters of the last five decades. On the album: Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Lionel Loueke, Dave Holland & Vinnie Colaiuta with special guests Norah Jones, Tina Turner, Corinne Bailey Rae, Luciana Souza, Leonard Cohen & Joni Mitchell.

    Frozen Letter

LP Pressed To 120 Gram Red Translucent Vinyl

As their name implies, when Spider Bags hook into you,
it's hard to shake the hold. --PITCHFORK

Formed in 2005, Chapel Hill, North Carolina's Spider Bags were largely a
revolving cast, with only Dan McGee (guitars, vocals) persevering through
the various incarnations of the band. But during the 2011 recording of Shake
My Head, the current lineup consisting of Steve Oliva (bass) and Rock Forbes
(drums) was finally solidified. Building upon the foundation laid down by
its predecessor, Frozen Letter rocks with the clairvoyance of three musicians
who have spent a lot of time recording and touring together over the last few
years. "When we started this record, we weren't even thinking about it being
released. We just did it to have fun and keep moving forward," says Forbes.
This approach allowed the band to push itself further out into the
psychedelic frontier than ever before, aided by engineer/producer Wesley
Wolfe. Recorded mostly live over the course of a few days, there's an
exhilarating urgency to the record, as heard in riff-driven rockers like "Back
With You Again in the World" and "Chem Trails." The band brings the
tempo down a notch for "Coffin Car," which finds them mining an ominous
morbidity over one of their prettier chord patterns. "We Got Problems"
comes on like a true acid trip, alternating between utter terror and unfettered
joy. Featuring a heavy and repetitive pattern, a slew of effected guitars, and
searing guest leads from Superchunk's Mac McCaughan, the song
encapsulates an entire Spider Bags epoch in under six minutes. Frozen Letter is
the band's fourth full-length record overall and first for Merge Records.

He may not be a mainstream mainstay, but mention the name Walter Schreifels to
anyone even tangentially involved in the punk or hardcore scene and chances are you'll be met
with borderline reverence. From his tenure in legendary hardcore bands like Gorilla Biscuits and
Youth Of Today to his work in the pioneering post-hardcore act Quicksand and cult favorites like
Rival Schools, Schreifels has proved himself to be one of the most talented and diverse songwriters
of his generation. Over two decades after GB released their landmark album Start Today,
Schreifels transcended his hardcore roots and showed another side of his constantly shifting skin
with his solo debut An Open Letter To The Scene.

From stripped-down acoustic meditations like the album's title track to Schreifels' psychedelic-tinged
cover of Agnostic Front's "Society's Sucker" and an intricately arranged version
of his CIV Classic "Don't Gotta Prove It," An Open Letter To The Scene is arguably the first
project Schreifels has ever recorded that manages to incorporate all of his diverse influences and

Love Is A Four Letter Word

    Side D Etching

What ties the songs together is their theme. I had this vision that the album was going to be called 'Love' and I was going to talk about love and share love in one way or another, Mraz says. I thought it was going to be easy because everything I write comes from a place of love, whether it's a new understanding of it, or a retelling of it, or a reawakening to it. But the more I looked at the subject, the more I realized that love almost can't be defined and who am I to define it anyway? So I went on a journey to try to define the word and be an expression of it in the world.

    Your Ghost Keeps Finding Me

Levi Weaver's music doesn't fit in a box; you'll be hard pressed to find a genre that is enough to describe him. It's no wonder he's at ease traveling as he does touring. Levi, currently based out of Nashville, is a seasoned road warrior, covering 50k miles in a year. He plays as a one-man band intriguing audiences with his loop pedals, his dual mics, and a violin bow. But more than anything, he is a master story-teller with captivating lyrical integrity and gut-wrenching honesty. Teach Me Tiger

    Import

One of the sexiest voices of the 50s, April Stevens hit Teach Me Tiger (often erroneously accredited to Marilyn Monroe) caused a minor uproar due to his sexual suggestiveness when it first came out on the Imperial label in 1959, and consequently did not receive airplay on many radio stations, reaching only no. 86 in the Billboard charts even though his fan-base had been ever-growing since her first big seller Im In Love Again came out on RCA Victor in 1951. Described as the girl with the pin-up voice, or the intimate miss with the musical kiss, this is her one and only, full-length album, in which, backed by famous arranger and composer Henry Rene, April introduces a
new frontier in sexy-singing. As one of her many fan letters would explain: Other vocalists sing, but you actually talk to a guy and boy, the things you say!

    Johnny Cash: Forever Words

Johnny Cash: Forever Words is a collaborative album consisting of 16 songs created from Johnny Cash's unknown poetry, lyrics, and letters set to music by an astounding array of contemporary artists including Chris Cornell, Ruston Kelly & Kacey Musgraves, Rosanne Cash, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Brad Paisley, Kris Kristofferson & Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp, Elvis Costello, and more.

For nearly 60 years, the words of Johnny Cash have reached across cultural, spiritual and ideological borders. He was not only a singer of great songs, but a teller of universal truths about justice, faith, love, and independence. It was in this spirit that Johnny Cash: Forever Words, was created.

Recorded primarily at The Cash Cabin Studio in Hendersonville, Tennessee and co-produced by John Carter Cash and Steve Berkowitz, Johnny Cash: Forever Words is also the musical companion to the best-selling Forever Words: The Unknown Poems, a volume of Cash's unpublished writing edited by Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Paul Muldoon.

    Frankie Say Relax
Those three words in black letters on white oversized T-shirts persist as a main part of the imagery of the eighties. But even if you take away all the Malcolm McLaren-styled-marketing, Welcome To The Pleasuredome still stands out as one of the seminal records of the decade.

Produced by Trevor Horn (Art of Noise, The Buggles and briefly YES), it should. The sometimes over-the-top songs are interspersed with snippets of a Ronald Reagan impersonator and bombastic orchestral compositions. Put their most famous song 'Relax' in the middle of this and the song that created so much controversy when it was first released becomes a model of restraint. The irresistibly pounding yet simple bass line makes it as much a floor-filler today as it was in 1984.
The Orwellian 'Two Tribes', released at the height of the Cold War, still seems strangely poignant. 'The Power Of Love', the hyper-ballad that topped the British charts for a number of weeks, is still deliciously cheeky.

The re-mastering of this album will make your head spin and is the first that does the Trevor Horn production justice. As this is the first re-issue of the album on vinyl in 25 years, it's a damn good thing Music On Vinyl is releasing it on 180 grams audiophile vinyl!

    Future's Past (Awaiting Repress)

DAVE MASON--Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee and TRAFFIC co-founding member--has announced the release his new album, FUTURE'S PAST (Something Music/MRI) featuring new versions of his classic songs plus new material that he has written and performed on tour over the last few years. Renowned for such Traffic hits as Feelin' Alright (covered by Joe Cocker) and Hole In My Shoe plus his solo signature tracks We Just Disagree and Only You Know and I Know, MASON's acclaimed solo career continues to flourish as he tours the U.S. with his new project billed as DAVE MASON'S TRAFFIC JAM.

The cover art illustration for FUTURE'S PAST was done by none other than Mr. Graham Nash from a photo he made of DAVE while at Nash's place in Hawaii.

Of the new release, MASON says, There is a great version of 'Dear Mr. Fantasy' that is kind of a re-write. There is a version of 'World in Changes' that is absolutely nothing like the original and there is a great live version that is absolutely beautiful of 'Sad and Deep as You.' There are two or three songs that were on a CD called 26 Letters 12 Notes that I did seven years ago, a Robert Johnson song, 'Come On in My Kitchen' and a brand new song called 'That's Freedom.'

    Vamala

With only a Radio 2 session to precede it, the debut album from brothers Michael and David Champion appeared like a bolt out of the blue. And for believers in the environmental influence on music, it makes sense the Champions hail from the hamlet of Niton outside the Victorian seaside enclave of Ventnor on the Isle Of Wight, as Down Like Gold sounded beautifully out of time and place, even with artists they could call peers. Combining elder brother Michael's exquisitely melodic, intensely dreamy and persuasively heartbreaking songs with their folk-pop leanings, his affecting vocal timbre, David's empathic lead guitar and reinforcing harmonies that only siblings seem able to make, the album was a unique statement - much like the word Vamala, which fell out of Michael's mouth as he was singing along to a new tune. It had a nice ring, like a Croatian girl's name, he thought.

The follow-up album VAMALA (blame Michael's OCD for the capitals: I like letters the same height!) follows only a year on after their debut. The record-buying attention span is shorter these days, he reasons. There's so much new music out there, so we wanted to get an album out quickly. But only as we had the songs.

    Abandoned

Boston's most devoted and steadfast hardcore band, Defeater knows what it takes to remain credible in a scene where fans demand both unapologetic, in-your-face power and intense emotional honesty. For Defeater and their die-hard fans, this honesty is key, and with their Epitaph debut Abandoned, Derek Archambault (vocals) and fellow band members have created their masterpiece. Carrying on the narrative thread they have built across four previous albums, Abandoned is the band's most powerful and uncompromising album to date, powered by a renewed sense of artistic ambition and a plot twist no one could have expected. Defeater has never sounded more bleak and intense. The seething black-hole hardcore songs that served as finales "Cowardice" and "Bled Out" on Travels and Letters Home just barely touch the full-throated primal desperation on display in the first track here, and the momentary respite halfway through on "Borrowed And Blue" only makes the utter collapse that follows more punishing. This is the first album where the entire band was involved from the ground up, says Archambault, and that let Defeater push itself to a new level of discipline and depth.
