    Skin & Earth

Throughout a year long process, she began secretly working on an unprecedented idea writing and drawing her own comic book based around this alter ego of sorts. And on top of that, just to make things more difficult - an album to coincide with the whole thing.

Thus came Skin&Earth, the Canadian singer's fourth record and her most open and vulnerable to date. In the past, Lights wouldn't write about being angry or Lights wouldn't write a song about fighting or Lights wouldn't write about sex, she says. So En is me in another dimension, and I was able to write about all the things that I never wrote about before.

The album form of Skin&Earth also brings help from some of music's brightest including Corin Roddick of Purity Ring, Big Data and Josh Dun of Twenty One Pilots. Everything that happened on this record was really fun and natural and felt like we were all working towards the same goal, she says. It was this organic mutual fan-ship kind of thing that brought it all together. She continues, This is the most fun I've had doing a record. I've never felt that I understood a record more and I've never felt like I understood a reason for a record more.

Ultimately for Lights, the most important takeaway from the story of Skin&Earth is of a young woman entranced by a spirit that she and she alone must overcome. This is based on internal, emotional stress and turmoil - stuff that I've dealt with and stuff that a lot of people have dealt with. I've always believed that all those battles can be fought and you come out of this stronger. And that was the foundation of the story, she says. At the end of the day, if nothing else, I want people, especially young women, to see in this character a little bit of themselves - see that an ordinary person can do amazing things and fight battles nobody else can see, and there's no shame in that. In fact, there's a lot of beauty in it.

Third studio album from Canadian electro rock sensation Lights.

When electro-rock sensation Lights first hit the music scene in 2008, she was just a songwriter with a synth and a dream.. Her name may have been pluralized but Lights Poxleitner was a one-woman show who played and programmed her own instruments and sang her own lyrics. This admirable self-reliance is rare in pop-in fact, Lights, signed a publishing deal at 16 and began writing songs for other artists-but after her 2008 selftitled debut EP (precocious enough to earn her a best new artist Juno) and gold-selling full-length follow-up THE LISTENING, Lights was ready to open herself up to collaborations on her unexpectedly experimental album SIBERIA. And by choosing such leftfield collaborators as live electronic outfit Holy Fuck and rising rapper Shad, she also opened up her sound.

    Lights Out

The new Bishop Allen record, Lights Out, is here at last. Here's what went into it: ten years, three full-lengths, twelve EPs, thousands of shows, a move out of Brooklyn, a new home in the wooly wilds of Kingston, NY, time off to score the films Bully and Mutual Friends, as well as an Anderson Cooper 360 special, months of demos, drum tracking in a sweat-lodge attic studio during a July heat wave, a wet Fall arranging guitars, bass, and synths in a now-chilly attic studio, the coldest December on record spent mixing, a close call with a frozen pipe and flooded hard drives, and a photo found on a friend's refrigerator.

    Lights Out

With the strum of an acoustic guitar set against the fuzzed out chords of an electric guitar and the tones of a boy / girl vocal, the London-based duo announced their arrival in the summer of last year. Since then Kacey Underwood and Alice Costelloe (aka Big Deal) have been making waves with their tales of teen angst and adult compromise.

Lights Out, co-produced by Underwood and Dean Reid, emerges from its bedroom beginnings as a collection of 12 deeply personal songs with universal appeal, innately tapping into the innocence, insecurity, wonder and (sometimes unrequited) love and lust of relationships. These are songs which are structurally sparse yet emotively rich, sweet and seductive yet raw and jagged.

    Black Lights

Samaris return with a brand new album 'Black Lights' via One Little Indian.

Written and recorded over the past year in Berlin, Reykjavik and Ireland, 'Black Lights' is the Icelandic trio's most fully realised and accessible record yet - sung for the first time entirely in English, and headed up by gorgeous lead-off single 'Wanted 2 Say'.

'Black Lights' is a reflection on both the expanded horizons afforded by a year of experiences on the road following the release of 2014's 'Silkidrangar', and of a period of change and not a little emotional turmoil for all three band members.

The way the new album came together reflects the changing personal circumstances of the group over the last year. All are now based in separate cities: Þórður Kári Steinþórsson (aka Doddi - programming) relocating to Berlin to take part in the city's burgeoning techno scene, Áslaug Rún Magnúsdóttir (clarinet) to The Hague to study a specialised Sonology course and Jófríður Ákadóttir (voice) footloose, traveling to experience new places and the musical cultures within them.

    All The Little Lights

180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl with Bonus Record of Acoustic Performances and 8-Page Booklet Included

It's been a remarkable journey for Mike Rosenberg, the singer songwriter behind Passenger. A journey that has inspired some of the finest songwriting you'll hear anywhere, whether on a street corner, a sweaty rock'n'roll room or a concert stage. Indeed, Mike honed his craft on the street busking, singing songs for spare change, all the while travelling and impressing crowds from the UK (where he played with the likes of Jools Holland and Ed Sheeran) to Australia, where he recorded All The Little Lights. All The Little Lights shows this amazing singer loving life to the fullest. The second record in this double LP is an acoustic performance.

    Lights Camera Revolution

Music On Vinyl are thrilled to unleash the fourth studio album from Venice Beach, L.A. heavyweights Suicidal Tendencies, Lights Camera Revolution (1990).

Album opener and unmistakable anthem You Can't Bring Me Down - S.T.'s rally against vicious rumours and their notorious ban from playing public places in L.A. - sets the tone for the record, with 'Cyco' Mike Muir's lyrics of social commentary handled with intelligence, humour and a punk rock middle-finger. Lights Camera Revolution boasts the line-up now deemed classic. Suicidal's flirtation with the mainstream (complete with obligatory criticism of 'selling-out') went Gold in the US with over half a million copies sold, and to this day remains an essential record in any Metal or Punk collection.

Brainy and block-rocking rarely coexist like this.
    -Entertainment Weekly

Recorded in Marfa, Texas, YACHT's See Mystery Lights is an intimate party record that was captured in widescreen Technicolor. Singles include Summer Song and the sublimely catchy Psychic City, mixing electro and post punk rhythms seamlessly.

Jona Bechtolt - founding member of YACHT, former member of the Blow - is a huge talent, something that may not have been readily apparent on any of his three previous LPs. Those albums, created largely as solo endeavors, will not have prepared listeners for See Mystery Lights. Now an official partnership between Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans, who performed on several songs on 2007's I Believe In You, Your Magic Is Real, YACHT finally feel like a full-fledged band with direction and vision, particularly given the added weight (or rather, levity) of Evans' influence.

The songs on See Mystery Lights - from the bouncy, burbling you-can't-take-it-with-you screed The Afterlife (which plays like a less spastic companion piece to the Mae Shi's Run to Your Grave) to the roller rink-ready vocoder vocals of I'm In Love With a Ripper - represent YACHT at their most poppy. It's a collection of stone jams that finds the band finally as hellbent on experimenting and expanding the boundaries of its sonic scope as it is on having fun. Built on electronic foundations - laser effects, skittering computerized beats, and spacey synth lines (or guitar riffs that have been tuned or distorted to sound like synths) - these new songs are giddy with creative freedom while remaining tethered in service of their melodies. The vocal melodies are bright and buoyant, but delivered (by either band member, or in unison) in a chanted, oftentimes detached monotone that plays up the repetitive lyrics' mantra-like feel and adds a welcome undercurrent of slacker cool to their otherwise sugary optimism.

    Turn Out The Lights

Julien Baker's solo debut, Sprained Ankle, was one of the most widely hailed works of 2015. The album, recorded by an 18-year old and her friend in only a few days, was a bleak yet hopeful, intimate document of staggering experiences and grace, centered entirely around Baker's voice, guitar, and unblinking honesty. The album appeared on year-end lists everywhere from NPR Music to New York Magazine's Vulture. With Turn Out the Lights, Baker returns to a much bigger stage, but with the same core of breathtaking vulnerability and resilience. From its opening moments - when her chiming, evocative melody is accompanied by swells of strings - Turn Out the Lights throws open the doors to the world without sacrificing the intimacy that has become a hallmark of her songs. The album was recorded at the legendary Ardent Studios in her hometown of Memphis, TN, and mixed by Craig Silvey (The National, Arcade Fire). This evolution from 'Sprained Ankle's intentionally spare production allows Baker - who is still the album's sole producer and writer - greater scope and freedom. Strings and woodwinds now shade the corners of her compositions, and Baker takes to piano rather than guitar on several tracks, pushing the 21-year old Baker's work to cinematic heights of intensity.

    First Light's Freeze

A dark, mutant-country sound infused with strands of free-jazz and a late-70's Nashville big-radio strut hijacked by post-punk unravelers. The result is a beautiful mix of somber reflection, destination-unknown travelogue, and subversive anti-war boogie. Freeze confronts the mythology of war and friendship; the close proximity of things painful and pleasurable, and the complications of this as a paradigm for the world. Castanets suggest artistic geography as transcontinental as Merle Haggard, Albert Ayler, Television, and Richard and Mimi Farina.

    Under Great White Northern Lights

In the summer of 2007, shortly after the release of their 6th album Icky Thump, The White Stripes headed north of their hometown of Detroit to embark on an ambitious journey across Canada. The plan was to play a show in every province and territory in Canada, from B.C. to Newfoundland to Nunavut. Having never done a tour of Canada, Meg and I thought it was high time to go whole hog, from the ocean to the permafrost explains Jack White. We wanted to play out of the way towns that don't usually get shows, the shows are better, it's better for the people, it's a better experience, it's way more unique, something interesting is going to happen, hopefully.

White called upon filmmaker Emmett Malloy to come and document this trek for the band. Malloy had directed videos for the band in the past, and seemed eager to hit the road with them. Equipped with a couple of 16mm cameras, and a few other documenting devices, the band and crew all headed north. The end result was Under Great White Northern Lights.

Under Great White Northern Lights is a visual and emotional feature length film documenting The White Stripes making their way through Canada and culminating with their 10th Anniversary show in Nova Scotia. The film documents the band playing shows all over Canada; from local bowling alleys, to city buses, and onward to the legendary Savoy Theater for the 10th Anniversary show. A show that turned out to be the longest show the band had ever done on stage together.

The film captures intimate moments of Jack and Meg both on and off stage as they travel through some of the most remote parts of the northern Yukon Territory. Along the way, they have some nice casual conversations about their ten years together, fire cannons, play some of their biggest songs together on stage, and even play a one note show. The cameras were there to capture every waking moment.

What Northern Lights does best is document one of the biggest bands in the world, playing to local crowds in small towns. Some of these towns were so small that many of the locals had no idea who The White Stripes were, they just knew something big was going on in their town. This forced a band that had been together for a decade to go back to a place reminiscent of the first shows they ever played together. For the first time in a long time, no one knew who they were and they had to make a first impression with their music.

The live footage captured in this film shows that Jack and Meg were clearly ready for this. Beyond the live footage, some of the films most memorable moments happen off-stage, offering an insightful look into the very private and complex world that is The White Stripes. It was shortly after this tour that The White Stripes cancelled their fall tour of the U.S., making the ten year anniversary a truly pivotal milestone for this legendary band.

    Turn On The Bright Lights

Interpol's classic debut album now available on low cost vinyl.

Interpol: Carlos D., Daniel Kessler, Paul Banks, Samuel Fogarino. To make music marked distinctly of a specific period that's somehow so compelling as to be timeless is no mean feat. Interpol initially sounds as if they must have been roaming about Manchester as the 1970s screamed to a close, yet they emerged across the ocean in New York City some two decades-plus later. Combining the insistent drone of Joy Division with the dreamy melodies of the Chameleons, the fire of Mission of Burma, and an occasional jagged edge a la The Fall, the foursome inconceivably manage to defy anachronism on their debut full-length TURN ON THE BRIGHT LIGHTS. Just how they do it is indefinable, perhaps it's just a trick of the light, or the life that breathes gloomily, radiantly throughout, but it's undeniable. Vocals which fall somewhere between Ian Curtis's plaintive, edge-of-oblivion wail and the winking, laconic drawl of James's Tim Booth, ripping uncompromisingly through unpredictable, unforgettable lamentations from the reflective (NYC) to the imploring (PDA). When the darkly etched, implosive, mournful lyrics poke out as they do on the unrelenting Obstacle 1 (she puts the weights into my little heart and she gets in my room and she tears it apart), the hook is set for an important debut by a band that portends to be around a while.

    The Changing Lights (Pure Pleasure)

Stacey Kent's latest recording again demonstrates her vocal mastery. The immaculate intonation, timing and diction are flawless to the point of sheer purity. Her voice becomes an instrument with impeccable clarity and minimal vibrato. Her focus on this album is largely Latin numbers switching English with clever changes into Portuguese, and French imperceptibly. There are covers of bossa nova numbers from Tom Jobim and two songs written by novelist and lyricist Kashou Ishiguro; namely the title song Changing Lights, a sublime number, and The Summer We Crossed Europe a story gracefully sung by Ms Kent. Waiter, Oh Waiter is a neat request for help in choosing from a foreign menu. How Insensitive is quite the opposite. The Brazilian One Note Samba is a difficult number to handle at such pace with the short-spaced almost staccato notes; Stacey effortlessly takes the scale runs in her stride. The arrangements and accompaniment of husband Jim Tomlinson are outstanding. The rhythm section is wonderfully subtle with particular praise for the percussionists, pianist Graham Harvey and the Latino guitarists' phrasing. However, this is Stacey Kent's record first and foremost; impressive and top class. Highly recommended.

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Recorded just two and a half months before Tommy Bolin's untimely death, the Tommy Bolin Band are heard playing in an intimate setting for an FM broadcast (after spending the summer of 1976 playing huge stadiums with the likes of Steve Miller, Peter Frampton, ZZ Top, and Rush).

The Lights From The Chemical Plant

Produced by Jacquire King (Tom Waits, Kings Of Leon),
Robert Ellis' 2nd album, THE LIGHTS FROM THE CHEMICAL
PLANT, continues his journey into folk music he began 3 years
ago. The songs on the new record, which range from the majestic
string-adorned title track to noir pop rock and somber confessionals,
all show Ellis' growth and the various sides of this multidimensional
songwriter. Ellis recently told Rolling Stone THE LIGHTS FROM THE CHEMICAL
PLANT is "stylistically ambiguous," as he is
inspired by a wide variety of artists. "On this record I was trying
to channel everything from Paul Simon, Randy Newman and Bill
Withers, to free jazz artists like Ornette Coleman," Ellis explained.

The See See are a contemporary psychedelic band with one foot in 1967 and the other in 2014-they not only make psychedelic music for today, they make it for forever. The See See originated out of the ashes of some of the modern pop world's hippest guitar psych acts, most notably Richard Olson's 'The Eighteenth Day of May'. Forged in the Über-competitive London music scene, The See See have an ever-increasing fan base amongst Paisley Europeans fond of Television's guitars, Moby Grape's harmonies, the White Stripes' bite and Syd Barrett style. Their music is an exploding kaleidoscope of colors and sounds!

This is the band's first full-length US release, especially designed for the American market. Through a combination of their cutting-edge use of social media and their old-fashioned work ethic, which has seen The See See tour, tour and tour again, they have saturated the continental European indie market and given London its hippest, most innovative guitar scene in years!

This Sundazed anthology of music from these heirs to the Paisley Underground is classic psychedelia. Listen as The See See leave cult status behind and head for the far reaches of the galaxy and the top rung of the charts. Whether it's on 180 gram vinyl pressed at R.T.I. or compact disc, this collection should be ordered today as next week it will be the soundtrack of tomorrow!

    Light Information

Nobody cared about their old heads, because the new ones work just fine now, don't they?.... they have the same size mouth and eyes.

The song Old Heads is a sci-fi space anthem to technology that constantly replaces itself, proving both necessary and unnecessary at the same time. It's also a jangly pop gem, a trip through the fantastical that is ultimately warm and relatable. This remarkable coexistence is one of many achievements of Chad VanGaalen's Light Information, his sixth record on Sub Pop.

For an album that's about not feeling comfortable with really anything, as VanGaalen says, Light Information is nonetheless a vivid, welcoming journey through future worlds and relentless memories. The rich soundscapes and sometimes jarring imagery could only come from the mind of a creative polymath--an accomplished visual artist, animator, director, and producer,VanGaalen has scored television shows, designed puppet characters for Adult Swim, directed videos for Shabazz Palaces, Strand of Oaks,METZ, Dan Deacon, and The Head and the Heart, and produced records for Women, Alvvays, and others.

While alienation has always been a theme of VanGaalen's music,Light Information draws on a new kind of wisdom--and anxiety--gained as he watches his kids growing up. Being a parent has given me a sort of alternate perspective, worrying about exposure to a new type of consciousness that's happening through the internet, he says. Throughout the dark-wave reverb of Light Information are stories of paranoia, disembodiment, and isolation--but there's also playfulness, empathy, and intimacy.

The product of six years' work, going back even before 2014's Shrink Dust, Light Information emerged from the experimental instruments that fill VanGaalen's Calgary garage studio. As always, VanGaalen wrote, played, and produced all of the music on Light Information(save Ryan Bourne's bass part on Mystery Elementals and vocals onStatic Shape from his young daughters Ezzy and Pip), and designed the cover art.
