Recorded Live At The Newport Jazz Festival, Newport, Rhode Island, July 3, 1958

This 1958 set by the Dave Brubeck Quartet was recorded live at the Newport Jazz Festival in Rhode Island, July 3, 1958. It served as a tribute to Duke Ellington, with each band playing a set primarily drawn from Ellington's repertoire. The inspired choice of "Jump for Joy" makes for some of the most magical moments, while "Perdido" provides an extended workout for Desmond and Brubeck. "Liberian Suite Dance No. 3" is actually one movement of Ellington's Liberian Suite, which was premiered in late 1947. Brubeck's "The Duke," an elegant tribute to Ellington that showcases Desmond's lyrical alto and the exciting finale of "C Jam Blues" (the latter spotlighting Morello are also highlights).

Billie Holiday (born Eleanora Fagan; April 7, 1915 - July 17, 1959) was an American jazz singer and songwriter. Holiday was a seminal influence on jazz and pop singing. Her vocal style, strongly inspired by jazz instrumentalists, pioneered a new way of manipulating phrasing and tempo. Above all, she was admired for her deeply personal and intimate approach to singing.

"Billie Holiday Sings" was her first full-length album, released in the United States by Clef Records in 1952 in the 10-inch format. "An Evening with Billie Holiday" was the second 10 inch LP studio album released in 1953.

Julian Edwin "Cannonball" Adderley (September 15, 1928 - August 8, 1975) was a jazz alto saxophonist of the hard bop era of the 1950s and 1960s. Adderley is remembered for his work with trumpeter Miles Davis, including the album "Somethin' Else" (1958). This was recorded during Adderley's membership in the Miles Davis Sextet and is one of the few post 1955 appearances of Miles Davis as a sideman. Indeed, Davis plays several of the first solos, composed the bluesy title track and, according to the liner notes, chose most of the material. "Autumn Leaves" would remain in the Davis book, and "Love for Sale" would be recorded by the Davis Sextet a little over two months later.

    Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo Soundtrack

    Limited Coloured Vinyl: Solid Orange

Vertigo is a 1958 American film noir psychological thriller film directed and produced by Alfred Hitchcock. The story was based on the 1954 novel D'entre les morts (From Among the Dead) by Boileau-Narcejac. The film was shot on location in San Francisco, California, and at Paramount Studios in Hollywood. It is the first film to use the dolly zoom, an in-camera effect that distorts perspective to create disorientation, to convey Scottie's acrophobia. As a result of its use in this film, the effect is often referred to as the Vertigo effect. Vertigo received mixed reviews upon initial release, but is now often cited as a classic Hitchcock film and one of the defining works of his career.

On this LP you will find the music of the original soundtrack along with some bonus tracks culled from other Alfred Hitchcock films and even from the television series.

Orchestrated and conducted by Gordon Jenkins, "Alone" was Judy's first, and best, "conceptual" album. Released in 1957, all of the songs reflect the album's title of being "Alone". This record was quite a departure for Judy, who shows her versatility as a vocalist by performing very bluesy and jazz-infused numbers. If you ever want to show people that Judy Garland sang more than just show tunes, this is the album to play. This edition includes two bonus tracks: "It's So Lovely To Be Back Again In London" was released as a single in 1957 and "That's All There Is, There Isn't Any More" is from another concept album, 1959's "The Letter.

I'm Jimmy Reed / Rockin With Reed

There's simply no sound in the blues as easily digestible, accessible, and instantly recognizable as the music of Jimmy Reed. His debut LP release, I'm Jimmy Reed, was about as strong a first album as was heard in Chicago blues. Really a collection of single sides rather than an actual album of new material, the tracks were recorded from June 1953 (Roll & Rhumba) through March 1958 (You Got Me Crying ) and include the songs on which he'd built his reputation over the previous five years, key among them: Honest I Do,Ain't That Lovin' You Baby, You Got Me Dizzy, and You Don't Have to Go, plus their highly relevant B-sides, which help give this album more depth and breadth than a formal hits collection would have had.

Jimmy Reed's second album was a little different from his first. It is also a collection with previously released single sided recorded and released over the prior seven years; but three of the dozen songs here were new to listeners when they showed up on Rockin' with Reed. This album is every bit as enjoyable and equally essential listening, includingDown in Virginia, Going to New York, and Take Out Some Insurance, the latter two the latest recordings on this album; and even the one or two seeming throwaway here, the instrumentals Ends & Odds and My BitterSeed are worth hearing for what they reveal of the playing on these sessions. Reed's incredibly expressive voice, coupled with his sinewy guitar and virtuoso-level harp playing, is consistently great throughout.

Jerry Lee Lewis / Jerry Lee's Greatest

Jerry Lee Lewis has been described as rock & roll's first great wild man. A pioneer of rock and roll and rockabilly music, Lewis made his first recordings in 1956 at Sun Records in Memphis. Crazy Arms sold 300,000 copies in the South, but it was his 1957 hit Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin On that shot Lewis to fame worldwide. He followed this with Great Balls of Fire, Breathless and High School Confidential. Lewis has a dozen gold records in both rock and country. He won several Grammy awards, including Lifetime Achievement Award.

Lewis was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986, and his pioneering contribution to the genre has been recognized by the Rockabilly Hall of Fame. He was also a member of the inaugural class inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame. Reissued here are two of his original albums on one LP: Jerry Lee Lewis, originally released in 1958, and Jerry Lee's Greatest from 1961.

Ranked 101/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

By the time Cream formed in 1966, Eric Clapton was already fairly well known, having already performed and recorded with the Yardbirds and John Mayalls Bluesbreakers. However, it was in Cream that Clapton became a global superstar. Breaking free of the traditional rock & roll song structure for a more improvisational / jazz influenced take, the bands long jams gave birth to a whole new approach to rock music. When their debut album Fresh Cream was released in 1966 it immediately became the standard by which all other bands of the era were judged. Includes 5 bonus tracks.

A step beyond the pop-perfection of Big Star lay Chiltons darker side. His 1979 solo effort was a both brilliant and flawed drug-fuelled examination of his own country roots in search of a new direction. Through songs by Ernest Tubb, Jimmy C. Newman, Roy Orbisonand K.C. and the Sunshine Band, as well as some originals, Chilton produced a looser album that allowed his new found creativity to flow through the many cracks, simultaneously dividing fans into two camps: the Big Star purists, and the ones who were able to see the genius on the flip side of its demise.

    Tabula Rasa

The Berlin based Estonian Arvo PÄrt is one of the most important composers of the post-war era. His postmodern style is equally inspired by traditional as by new methods and has earned him the reputation of being a visionary.

Tabula Rasa stands as one of his most widely-performed compositions, as well as a fine example of his mature style. At once reverent, bleak and timeless, rich with otherwordly harmonies, Tabula Rasa aptly displays exactly why Arvo PÄrt is regarded as one of the most exceptional composers of the late 20th century.

This 2LP set from Vinyl Passion includes: Tabula Rasa - Concerto for 2 Violins, Prepared Piano and String Orchestra (1971); Symphony No. 1 'Poliphonic' (1964); Collage On The Theme B-A-C-H (1964); and Concerto for Cello and Orchestra. To Mstislav Rostropovich (1966).

Rodrigues not only popularized the fado throughout South America, she reinvented it -- brilliantly fusing the urban and rural styles of Lisbon and Coimbra, she also sought out material that moved far beyond the traditional tales of failed romance to explore instead the deepest crises of the soul and spirit, delivering performances unmatched in their fatalistic power and haunting beauty... Rodrigues recorded upwards of 170 albums and even appeared in a number of feature films, retaining her drawing power even after the popularity of fado itself began to dissipate during the 1960s. She continued touring well past her 70th birthday... upon receiving news of her passing [1999], Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres ordered three days of national mourning, declaring her 'the Voice of Portugal.'

Holy Diver is the debut album from American heavy metal band Dio. Released on May 25, 1983, the album has been hailed by critics as Dio's best work and a classic staple in the heavy metal genre. Dio has been hailed as one of the finest voices in Heavy Metal for over 30 years now and for good reason. Due to his stints in Rainbow, Black Sabbath and as a solo artist, Dio is one of the few people in the history of music that can honestly say they have played on three classic albums, each under a different moniker.

    Lost Voice

Toni Harper's two original albums Toni (1956) and Lady Lonely (1959).

Toni Harper's childhood was made of the magic any aspiring adult artist would kill for: a platinum record, a performance at Carnegie Hall, evenings spent sharing a stage with such performers as Cab Calloway, and invitations to appear on television with Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, Milton Berle, and Ed Sullivan. And all of the magic unfolded before she'd turned 12 years old.

The jazz vocalist, who now goes by the name Toni Dunlap, got her big break in 1945 when she went up against a couple hundred other kids at an audition held by choreographer Nick Castle. Harper, who had been a dance student of Maceo Anderson, passed muster as far as her dancing, but when she sang Waitin' for the Train to Come In, she had the audition sewn up on the spot. Castle cast her in his production of Christmas Follies, which was staged at Los Angeles' Wilshire Ebell Theatre. Harper drew enthusiastic reviews and went on to earn a platinum record when she was eight years old with Candy Store Blues.

Harper paired with Herb Jeffries for You're Too Tall 'n' I'm Too Small, the number for which she later paired live with Calloway at Los Angeles' Million Dollar Theatre. Television beckoned the young singer and she was a guest on numerous programs, among them Sullivan's weekly variety show. When she wasn't appearing on television, she was singing at numerous New York hot spots that included the Apollo, the Strand, and the Paramount. At the age of 11, Harper topped it all off by singing at Carnegie Hall.

Like many child stars, Harper's career slowed down as she began to mature. As a teenager, she was too old for the childhood image that had given her a great start, but too young to effectively take on a more adult image. She attended high school in Los Angeles, involving herself in such extracurricular activities as drama, choir, and the glee club. She continued to take professional singing jobs during the school's summer break. Having completed high school in the mid-'50s, and still hampered by her youth, she sang for the teenaged record-buying public. For a young woman of her age, One Hamburger to Go was more acceptable in the public eye than any of the more sophisticated songs that she would record in later years, such as Love for Sale.

The vocalist got her chance to sing the more adult songs when she recorded for Verve. In addition to Love for Sale, Harper recorded such songs as I Could Write a Book and Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered. Backing Harper on her self-titled first recording for Verve were pianist Oscar Peterson, drummer Alvin Stoller, guitarist Herb Ellis, and bassist Ray Brown. The vocalist later signed with RCA Victor, recording for the label for about four years and ending in 1963. Harper quit the business in 1966 after devoting more than 20 years to her singing career.
