    Newport Uproar (Pure Pleasure)

The 1967 Newport Jazz Festival, fourteenth in a world-famous series, was inexplicably the first at which Lionel Hampton had ever appeared. Better late than never, the great vibist and bandleader came, played and conquered. As the crowd roars ecstatically at the end of this record, the awed but happy voice of producer George Wein is heard: »This hasn't happened since Duke « he begins, casting back in his mind to 1956 and the nearest comparable triumph.

There is nothing quite so effective as a big band at an outdoor jazz festival. So the 1967 Newport programme included those of Count Basie, Buddy Rich, Woody Herman, Don Ellis and Lionel Hampton. Lionel knew the competition he had to face, and knew that in the festival's climatic spot - the last act on the last night - his performance would be compared with those of all the others. He prepared accordingly.
Members of his Inner Circle, the octet with which he normally works, would provide the nucleus for an orchestra largely composed of alumni from his earlier bands. When the call went out to the Old Guard, the response was magnificent, as a glance at the personnel will show. Top names in the profession came back to join him, to form one of the great all-star bands of all time. A two week engagement at The Metropole in New York, immediately before the festival, served as a prolonged dress rehearsal, where the ensembles were polished and new arrangements familiarized. Enthusiasm mounted night by night in the Seventh Avenue club, among musicians and public alike, until Newport and the evening of 3rd July were reached. Then, as you will hear, the spirit was willing and the flesh far, far from weak.

All these preparations ensured a good performance, but the spark, the magic necessary to make it a great one, had to come from the leader. Everybody knows that he is a kind of rhythmic dynamo-driving, full of energy, unsparing of himself. His commitment and conviction communicate rapidly with any audience, so that it is soon won over to his side. Yet in the long, ninety minute program, errors in pacing would have been easy, forgivable, but extremely damaging. A climax reached too soon would have led to anti-climax, and a flat feeling as the crowd left the ground. As it was, Lionel's long professional experience served him superbly, so that his program rose steadily and inexorably to the all-out, emotional frenzy of Flying Home. Like a good general, he never lost his grasp on the situation. He inspired his men by personal example on the vibes, reinforced the beat on a second set of drums, and finally brought up the reserves - Alan Dawson, Milt Buckner and Illinois Jacquet - at just the right time, and in the right spot, to secure an unforgettable triumph and a tumultuous ovation.

    Musicians:

    • Lionel Hampton (vibraphone, piano, drums)

    • Illinois Jacquet (tenor saxophone)

    • Snooky Young, Wallace Davenport (trumpet)

    • Al Grey, Benny Powell (trombone)

    • Jerome Richardson, George Dorsey, Ed Pazant (reeds)

    • John Spruill, Milt Buckne (piano)

    • Billy Mackel (guitar)

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    The Hybrid

SCINTILLA is a science fiction thriller film, set deep underground in the wilds of a former
Soviet state where strange genetic experiments are taking place. The film has inspired a
newly formed super-group THE SCINTILLA PROJECT, fronted by SAXON's own BIFF BYFORD,
who will be releasing their album THE HYBRID, featuring songs inspired by the film.

Biff Byford states:' I was introduced to Lionel Hicks by Toby Jepson while recording 'Call To Arms'.
This was leading Saxon to write a song for the Lionel Hicks produced film 'Scintilla'. As the film
developed through production, our minds began working - maybe we could put together a
concept album based and inspired by the film. While I was having a break from writing with
Saxon me, Lionel Hicks and Anthony Ritchie ( both 'Balance Of Power') decided that I would
produce and also sing on the album, I brought in Andy Sneap to co-produce and play guitar on
    some tracks'.

In an era when numerous Funk Metal acts ruled the airwaves, one of the genre's forefathers Faith No More proved to be the undisputed masters of inventive songwriting with their album Angel Dust (1992). After gaining mainstream success with their previous album The Real Thing (off the back of global hit "Epic") in 1989, the band continued three years later with Angel Dust, a mind-bending masterpiece of musicianship. River: The Joni Letters

The legendary pianist and innovator explores the words and music of another musical pioneer Joni Mitchell on his first new studio recording for Verve since 1998's GRAMMY® Award winner Gershwin's World. Inspired in equal parts by Mitchell's poetic lyrics and unique melodies/harmonies, the musicians play with a restraint and elegance that achieves a perfect balance between the adventurous aesthetics of jazz improvisation and the emotional directness of one of the finest singer/songwriters of the last five decades. On the album: Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Lionel Loueke, Dave Holland & Vinnie Colaiuta with special guests Norah Jones, Tina Turner, Corinne Bailey Rae, Luciana Souza, Leonard Cohen & Joni Mitchell.

    The End Of That

The End of That is Plants and Animals' third album, following their breakthrough debut, Parc Avenue, and 2010's La La Land. It showcases the band in an intimate, almost live-off-the-floor setting. While there's no shortage of catchy electric guitar riffs, as evidenced on lead single Lightshow, the album also showcases lead singer Warren C. Spicer on piano, and plenty of acoustic guitar, an early touchstone of the band that had been given a break on the last record.

Fans of Plants and Animals' early acoustic work will feel right at home with songs like Before, Song for Love and the title track while lovers of the band's multi-part excursions won't be disappointed either. Side A and B of the album end and begin with their own respective anthemic monsters in Crisis! and 2010. The End of That was engineered by Lionel Darrenne (Feist).

    Very Truly Yours

Released in 1955, Very Truly Yours was the first album that Jimmy Scott recorded for the Savoy label. After spending the better part of a decade singing in ensembles, first with Lionel Hampton and then with New Orleans bandleader Paul Gayten, Scott was poised to make a name for himself as a solo artist. These dozen songs, executed with a small jazz combo supporting him (including Charles Mingus on bass), find Scott in beautiful voice, confidently investing himself in well-chosen covers as well as some of his own great originals. From the opening number (Imagination), it's clear that you're hearing a rare and expressive voice. Here he sounds every bit as romantic and inventive as he continued to be decades later.

    Into

Lionel Williams leaves behind the murkier lo-fi production of his 2012 debut full-length, Lemniscate, for the somnambulant pop of Into. The new album-out July 24th on Chaz Bundick's (Toro Y Moi, Les Sins) Company Records-moves Lionel's Vinyl Williams alias into a more vivid, multi-colored dream world. Unlike the dramatic film scores of his grandfather (famed composer and conductor John Williams), this 25-year-old Los Angeles-based musician's songs are far more introspective, effortlessly blending ambient, electronic, Krautrock, psychedelia and shoegaze influences into a uniquely visceral listening experience that often mirrors the surrealism of his own collage-based visual artwork.

Like staring at the intricate geometry of a nautilus shell through a rippling aqua lens, Into's detailed arrangements shimmer across the stereo field with Williams' breathy, yearning melodies bathed in warm reverb. The gentle, rhythmic percolation of breezy album opener "Gold Lodge" imagines CAN at their most ethereal, as if vying for a release on 4AD Records during the label's halcyon days. Similarly, Cocteau Twins-esque guitars ring above the pulsing kosmische atmosphere of "Hall of Records" and then later, the 10-plus-minute "Xol Rumi" takes a detour across the Autobahn using Neu!'s motorik precision. Elsewhere, the celestial "Greatest Lives" shuffles through a thick, gooey cloud of synths, while instrumental "The Tears of an Inanimate Object" pays tribute to the spiritually minded explorations of Alice Coltrane and Dorothy Ashby, with astral harp strums guiding the light electronic accompaniment.

From the mysterious, nocturnal drive of first single "World Soul" to the gauzy, space-age funk of "Allaz," Vinyl Williams nicely blurs the line between melodicism and experimentation, his impressionistic song-craft being as inviting as it is beguiling. In this modern era of shuffled playlists and musically short attention spans, Into is that rare album created to be listened to uninterrupted from beginning to end, and one that is sure to reveal itself again and again after each successive play.

    While We're Young - Soundtrack

While We're Young is Noah Baumbach's sparkling follow-up to his 2012 hit Frances Ha. No film has better captured the weird, upended logic of urban sophisticates: the older ones embrace their iPads and
Netflix, the young ones crave vinyl records and vintage VHS tapes.

The film follows Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts as Josh and Cornelia, a childless New York married couple in their mid-forties. As their other friends all start having children, the couple gravitates toward a young hipster couple named Jamie (Adam Driver) and Darby (Amanda Seyfried). He's an aspiring documentary filmmaker, avocation Josh already has. Soon the older couple begins enjoying the energy they feel hanging out with the younger generation, but eventually Josh begins to suspect his new best friend might not be as straightforward
    and trustworthy as he thought.

The soundtrack is filled with classics such as Paul McCartney's "1985," Lionel Richie's "All Night Long (All Night)," Survivor's "Eye of The Tiger," or David Bowie's "Golden Years" just to name a few. The score to the film comes courtesy of LCD Soundsystem's own James Murphy.

The Randy Newman Songbook (Box Set)

Nonesuch Records releases the four-LP, vinyl-only, limited-edition The Randy Newman Songbook box set in 2016. Nonesuch's Randy Newman Songbook series-comprising solo recordings of songs from throughout Randy Newman's five-decade career-previously included two volumes, released on CD in 2003 and 2011; the box set marks their first release on vinyl. Sixteen additional songs from a newly released third volume, along with five bonus tracks (Feels Like Home, A Wedding in Cherokee County, Family Album: Homage to Alfred, Emil and Lionel Newman, I'm Dreaming, and Wandering Boy), join those first two volumes in a new, thematic sequencing, to create this new complete Songbook box set. Mitchell Froom produced The Randy Newman Songbook, Vol. 1 and was joined on Vol. 2 and Vol. 3 by Newman's lifelong friend and colleague Lenny Waronker.

The New York Times said of the first volume of The Randy Newman Songbook: The great craftsmanship is more apparent in the stripped-down context, and the Associated Press said, Few singer-songwriters could inject more new life into solo piano versions of their work than Randy Newman. The UK's Uncut called Vol. 2 another subtly sublime stroll through the master's back catalogue, noting that Newman is owner of a peerless canon, and that the album isolates his full range of qualities: the improbable juxtapositions of caustic topicality and heart-wrenching universality, the concise character studies, and singing and piano playing that seem to emanate from the very fabric of America.

Wild Bill Davis And Johnny Hodges In Atlantic City (Speakers Corner)

In the Sixties, the two befriended musicians Wild Bill Davis and Johnny Hodges often met up for jam sessions, at galas with Duke Ellington, and in various studios to make recordings for several record companies. However, their live concerts in Grace's Little Belmont in Atlantic City in 1966 were the declared highlights for critics, the public and musicians alike. This is not only proved by the masses of people who swarmed to the club, which was always jam-packed, it is also reflected in the sales figures of their recordings.

On the present recording, the listener is offered a first-class programme of own compositions, Duke Ellington hits, and head arrangements. Good Queen Bess and Rockville are quite exceptional, and the other titles are hardly less enthralling. The rhythm group is hotter than hot with Lionel Hampton's Bobby Durham on the drums, and the two grand old men of swing really let themselves go. The trombonist Lawrence Brown, musical buddy from the Duke Ellington Orchestra, grooves in the background and we can be happy (thanks to the producer Rad McCuen!) that we can still thoroughly enjoy this great disc almost 50 years later.

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    I Go Back Home

When Jimmy Scott died in 2014, dozens of musicians, hundreds of journalists and thousands of fans mourned the passing of a jazz legend. Not only had a link back to the era of Billie Holiday, Charlie Parker and Lionel Hampton been lost, but so had the chance to bring the fame and respect denied to him throughout his long and rich life.

Now, as if sent from some righteous deity, comes I Go Back Home, an album full of life recorded by Jimmy Scott years before his death. Created by German producer Ralf Kemper, Jimmy Scott and with mixes produced by Phil Ramone, no expense was spared in giving Scott the lushest musical backdrops possible, creating an album that, like Scott's inimitable vocal style, comes late but but right on time.

I Go Back Home manages to replicate that using the finest arrangers writing for the most experienced players, mixed by the most intuitive engineers in the the best studios available. Scott revisited his favourite songs, into which he invested his lived experience, letting the listener feel the story known by far too few.

The creation of I Go Back Home was the subject of an acclaimed documentary of the same name. It depicts producer Ralf Kemper's drive to work with Jimmy and provide him with the best album he can. The film captures the challenges and sacrifices that lead up to the recording sessions, a document that makes I Go Back Home an even richer record.

Hounding Jimmy Scott through the most of his recording career was an oppressive recording contract that prevented him from releasing albums. It wasn't until 1992 that Jimmy, aged 63, recorded the first album over which he had creative control, All The Way. Nominated for a Grammy and finally bringing him to the attention of an audience that wasn't entirely comprised of jazz fans and a few lucky passers-by, Scott began touring and regularly releasing albums. It's not until I Go Back Home that Scott was given the budget that allowed him unfettered control over song selection, personnel and orchestration.

As the album progresses, each song sees another musician or singer join Scott for a fresh interpretation of a beloved song. Long-time collaborators such as Kenny Barron and Joe Pesci, or new, such as actress and singer Reneè Olstead, trumpeter Till Brönner and harmonica player Gregoire Maret. All give Scott the room he needs to slide between phrases, telling his story and living out the world of each song.

As Jimmy explained: "The lyric is so important to me. I feel if you're singing a song or telling the story in a song it should mean something. That's why I protect what I have in it, because that's where I believe it should go. It should mean something. It should make sense."

Dave Nathan wrote on AllMusic that Scott's phrasing moves "beyond mere poignancy and close to reverence". This is truer than ever on I Go Back Home. Scott shifts from speak-singing in album-opener (Sometimes I Feel Like a) Motherless Child to lively bossa nova take on I Remember You to full-throated commitment on If I Ever Lost You.

Expertly interplaying with top tier collaborators I Go Back Home is ultimately a record of collaboration and companionship, and the sound of a singer going out on top. Scott commemorates his highest points, and spars with fresh new talent in a way that suggests that he would have had great albums in him yet. And while we can mourn the decades he didn't record, the tragedies and injustices that never defeated him, I Go Back Home succeeds in capturing the essence of a life that was ultimately triumphant.

    The Hitman's Bodyguard Soundtrack

The Hitman's Bodyguard is an American action comedy directed by Patrick Hughes (The Expendables 3). The film stars Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson, Gary Oldman and Salma Hayek.

The world's top protection agent (Ryan Reynolds) is called upon to guard the life of his mortal enemy, one of the world's most notorious hitmen (Samuel L. Jackson). The relentless bodyguard and manipulative assassin have been on the opposite end of the bullet for years and are thrown together for a wildly outrageous 24 hours. During their raucous and hilarious adventure from England to The Hague, they encounter high-speed car chases, outlandish boat escapades and a merciless Easter European dictator (Gary Oldman) who is out for blood. Salma Hayek joins the mayhem as Jackson's equally notorious wife.

The soundtrack album plays the bromancing card with hits like Hello (Lionel Ritchie), I Want To Know What Love Is (Foreigner), or Dancing In The Moonlight (King Harvest); it also includes a punk version of Black Betty by Spiderbait, a fast-paced car chase track by Aussie composer Dmitri Golovko and a James Bond-esque score by veteran composer Atli Örvarsson (The Mortal Instruments, Babylon A.D.). The highlight of the album is Nobody Gets Out Alice written and performed by Samuel L. Jackson. A killer track!

Rock of Ages (Out Of Stock)

The Band's Ultimate Live Album Recorded at Its Career Peak!

Legendary Live Set Features Horn Arrangements by Allen Toussaint

    Incredible Sound and Virtuosic Performances

The Last Waltz gets bigger billing, but The Band's 1972 live album Rock of Ages is actually the better representation of a live Band album. Recorded at the tail end of the group's Cahoots tour and over the course of four nights at New York's Academy of Music at the end of December 1971, the incendiary concert set bookmarks the close of the first phase of the collective's career.

Rather than follow the lead of most other live records made at the time (and many since), The Band resists any temptation to improvise or extend its material. Instead, the group plays with an intensity, chemistry, and spirit that's nearly unrivaled by any other live album. The quintet also draws on a secret weapon: One Allen Toussaint, who tailors expert horn arrangements for multiple songs, a move that spices renditions of classics such as "Don't Do It" and "Chest Fever." To top it all off, the horn charts are performed by the Rock of Ages Horn Section-a five-piece ensemble that includes legendary trumpeter Snooky Young (Count Basie, Lionel Hampton) and saxophonist Joe Farrell (Charles Mingus, Elvin Jones).

"I felt very much at home with The Band. You could tell in their music they know where they're coming from and they know where they're going. Each one had an extremely special interest in what they were doing." -Toussaint, as told to Rob Bowman

Do they ever. Unencumbered by the myriad guests and grandiose sense that define The Last Waltz, and energized by Toussaint's invaluable work, Rock of Ages is the sound of a great band pulling out all the stops. Robbie Robertson's guitar solos take "Unfaithful Servant" to a higher ground; "The W.S. Walcott Medicine Show" kicks with raunchy R&B abandon; Garth Hudson delivers a show-stealing performance on "The Genetic Method," a thrilling organ piece that incorporates elements of Anglican church music, folk, classical, and pop-as well as "Auld Lang Syne," due to its being recorded on New Year's Eve.

After various inferior editions and reissues, Rock of Ages is finally presented on an immaculate-sounding 180g 2LP set from Mobile Fidelity that lets Toussaint's contributions, horn section's energy, and the Band's feverish interplay shine like never before. Mastered from the original tapes, the open, airy, natural, and balanced sound will have you returning to Rock of Ages again and again.
