ADAD-NEW-1517xGuided By Voices
Guided By Voices: Live From Austin, TXTwenty-plus years...two dozen albums...
twice that many bandmates...the mad genius that is Robert Pollard finally decided it
was time to bring down the curtain on one of indie rock's most innovative and, well,
outrageous live bands. Certainly nobody could accuse Guided By Voices of being too
tame, too mainstream, too predictable. Ever since Pollard created the "gang" in Ohio
in the early 1980's with the help of his brother Jimmy and Pete Jamison (with the
help of a loan to pay for the first few records), "lo-fi" may be the best descriptor for
their brand of bursting, raw, no-holds-barred shout-out songs.
The end came in 2004, after the release of their final, critically acclaimed Half
Smiles of the Decomposed, and this Austin City Limits recorded on November 9, 2004
was one of their last performances. "I love the guys in the band, but I'm getting too
old to be a gang leader," Pollard said, who's now focusing on his solo work.
And what a finale it was. Much of it couldn't, wouldn't ever be broadcast on
television - public or otherwise - but it's all here for GBV fans to savor forever. Pollard
was in rare form, with buckets of beer literally and liberally decorating the stage. He
always said he wanted to end the band's decades of music on a high note. And this is it!

Live In EuropeIn early 2009, James McMurtry traveled overseas for his first European tour. The guys played for enthusiastic crowds in Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, The Netherlands, Scotland, and Belgium. Joining McMurtrys band on keyboards for the tour was the legendary Ian McLagan (who also played on McMurtrys latest studio album, JustUs Kids). McMurtry combined the best recordings from the Amsterdam and Geislingen concerts to create Live in Europe.
The deluxe vinyl version includes inserted copies of the CD and a bonus DVD. Fellow Austin-based songwriter, Jon Dee Graham, opened the shows on the tour and joins the band on a version of his tune, Laredo, on the bonus DVD.
James McMurtry packs a lot of story into his low-key songs: tales of loners and losers adrift in wideopen spaces. His voice is deadpan, but his characters survive grand struggles. The New York Times1. Bayou Tortue

So You Wannabe An OutlawSo You Wannabe an Outlaw, Earle's first album for Warner Bros. Records since 1997's El Corazón, explores his country songwriting roots and features collaborations with Willie Nelson, Johnny Bush, and Miranda Lambert.
"There's nothing 'retro' about this record," Earle says. "I'm just acknowledging where I'm coming from." So You Wannabe an Outlaw is the first recording he has made in Austin, TX. Earle has lived in New York City for the past decade. "Look, I'm always gonna be a Texan, no matter what I do," he says. "And I'm always going to be somebody who learned their craft in Nashville. It's who I am."
So You Wannabe an Outlaw is an homage to outlaw music and is dedicated to the late Waylon Jennings. "I was out to unapologetically 'channel' Waylon as best as I could," Earle says. "This record was all about me playing' on the back pick-up of a '66 Fender Telecaster on an entire record for the first time in my life. The vocal part of it is a little different. I certainly don't sound like Waylon Jennings. I moved to Nashville in November of 1974, and right after that Willie Nelson's Red Headed Stranger came out. I was around when Waylon was recording Dreaming My Dreams. Guitar Town (Earle's 1986 chart-topping, Grammy Award-winning debut album) wound up being kind of my version of those types of songs," Earle recalls.
Earle is backed on So You Wannabe an Outlaw by his long-time band The Dukes - guitarist Chris Masterson, fiddle player Eleanor Whitmore, bassist Kelly Looney, and new members drummer Brad Pemberton and pedal steel player Ricky Ray Jackson. The album was produced by Richard Bennett and recorded at Arlyn Studios in Austin.LP 1

Live From Austin, TX (Dwight Yoakam)Twenty-something Dwight Yoakam was literally the new kid in country music when he stepped onto the Austin City Limits stage in October 1988. But even then, as he has ever since, he was doing things his own way. Dwight was born in a small Kentucky town and grew up listening to mountain and bluegrass music, and unlike most of the mainstream country-pop crooners of the eighties, he almost single-handedly revived the rockabilly / honky tonk / hillbilly sound that was one of the cornerstones of country music's formative years. Early on he discovered the fabled Bakersfield sound of the 60s and adopted it as his own, in the tradition of country legends Merle Haggard and Buck Owens. Buck, in fact, became his hero and friend. When Dwight was playing a fair in Bakersfield, he stopped by Buck's office and coaxed him into playing a few songs with him on stage that night. The result was a lasting friendship and their historic duet, Streets Of Bakersfield. Much like his heroes, Dwight has been true to his roots and breaking new ground for almost 20 years.

With his astonishingly accomplished guitar playing, Stevie Ray Vaughan ignited the blues revival of the '80s. Vaughan drew equally from bluesmen like Albert King, Otis Rush and Hubert Sumlin and rock 'n' roll players like Jimi Hendrix and Lonnie Mack, as well as the stray jazz guitarist like Kenny Burrell, developing a uniquely eclectic and fiery style that sounded like no other guitarist, regardless of genre.
Before the Montreaux Jazz Festival, before Bowie's Let's Dance album, before Texas Flood, before the Grammys, before the cocaine and alcohol abuse, before the redemption of sobriety, before the joyful In Step and Family Style ..... before August 27, 1990..... before the all-star tributes, before The Legendary Stevie Ray Vaughan......
There was an unknown, hardworking 24-year-old gunslinger named Little Stevie Vaughan, learning his craft the hard way in the trenches of the Austin Texas clubs, trying his darndest to get out of the shadow of his famous older brother Jimmie.
It wouldn't be long.
Anyone lucky enough to have been in the audience at this early live show, on April Fools Day in 1980, could have told you that. Young Stevie Vaughan (he had yet to become Stevie Ray) blasted the hometown crowd with a style that was already very well-formed. With Chris Layton on drums and bassist Jackie Newhouse (Tommy Shannon would join up a year later), his basic sound was already in place, albeit still in need of some polishing.
Taken from the surviving two-track master, Vaughan's guitar is raw and in your face every note of the way. His takes on Freddie King's In the Open and the lengthy Tin Pan Alley are the real highlights here.
As we did with our vaunted box set reissues, Texas Hurricane, again Analogue Productions is bringing you the finest-sounding Stevie Ray Vaughan collections ever preserved on 200-gram vinyl. Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound cut the lacquers for the LPs using the ultimate VMS 80 cutting lathe. Gary Salstrom handled the plating and the vinyl was pressed of course at Quality Record Pressings.
There's not a link in this chain that wasn't absolute first-rate. The absolute best that money can buy. We're passionate about the blues AND Stevie Ray and the passion shows up here in spades.

Live From Austin, TX (Steve Earle)This show, his first appearance on Austin City Limits, captures the excitement and free spirit of that first seminal album, Guitar Town, which was nothing less than a collection of personal odysseys. He was certainly a musical renegade from day one, and that's one thing about him that hasn't changed. Live From Austin, TX (David Byrne)David Byrne is a modern renaissance man - and that's not just a clichÉ. From the heady days as co-founder of the celebrated art new wave group Talking Heads (1976-88) through his own constantly evolving and innovative solo music career, he has pursued his muse on many different artistic fronts. He's been the driving force behind a body of work that has been both intellectually daring and commercially successful...and he shows no signs of slowing down decades later. This show, captured on November 28, 2001, came on the heels of his hit single, "Like Humans Do" and the release of the album Look Into The Eyeball, which was another typically eclectic musical stew reflecting a variety of styles and influences, from Philly soul to a D.C. Go-Go inspired groove and his first-ever Spanish composition, "Desconocido Soy." Critics at the time called it his best work in years, and his performance on the Austin City Limits stage shows why. Joined by Austin's own eclectic tango ensemble Tosca, Byrne takes us down many different musical roads in his ACL debut. Of course, besides the brilliant songwriter and performer that he is, he's also an accomplished performance artist, photographer, web journalist, film writer/director, composer of motion picture soundtracks, and founder of his own world music label, Luaka Bop Records. He also has a collection of Grammys, Oscars and Golden Globes on his mantel. His music may be complex and poetic, but he makes no bones about his ultimate intent: "I want to move people to dance and cry at the same time.

Eric Johnson: Live From Austin, TexasFasten your seatbelts for an extraordinary ride
with guitar hero Eric Johnson. This is the performance that fellow
guitarists, wannabes and fans have been waiting and dying for since this
show first aired in 1989. And for good reason: Johnson's playing has a
way of connecting to fans of every guitar style while still eliciting raves
from the likes of Carlos Santana, Johnny Winter, Jeff Beck, Stevie Ray
Vaughan and even country music legend Chet Atkins. His inspirations are
the "3J's:" Jimi Hendrix, Jerry Reed, and Jeff Beck, but his style ranges
wide and free throughout the entirety of guitar history while still infusing
fresh ideas of his own.
A long-time Austin mainstay, he took up guitar
at age eleven and had his first professional group at fifteen. In 1974, he
defied the musical mainstream by forming Austin's first jazz/rock fusion
band, the Electromagnets, and he's been making guitar history ever since.
"Guitar genius" is an easy phrase to throw around, but when it comes to
blending fires and finesse, Eric Johnson has it all.

Live From Austin, TX (Buck Owens)Maybe it was an epiphany of sorts. As Buck tells it, One day I was watching Austin City Limits and Dwight Yoakam was on, then he dedicates the program to 'Buck Owens.' So I said, I'm going to see what this kid is like. It wasn't long after that he was on stage with Dwight singing his old hits. Buck was bitten by the bug to return to music, after calling it quits almost ten years earlier. This man from Sherman, Texas - probably best-known as the wide-grinning rube on Hee Haw for so many years - started a country music revolution. Or more accurately, a counter-revolution. It was called The Bakersfield Sound. He and fellow revolutionary Merle Haggard were cranking out raw, hard-driving honky-tonk music that stood the country-pop coming out of Nashville on its head. When Buck Owens and the Buckaroos would launch into I've got a tiger by the tail, it's plain to see....! the packed crowds would be on their feet and headed for the dance floor. Along the way Buck inspired none other than The Beatles to record their first country song, his classic Act Naturally, and the master of soul, Ray Charles, to immortalize one of the best-known country songs ever, Crying Time. Buck always loved his home state, and once flew to Austin on his private jet to make a surprise visit to a club that celebrated a Buck Owens Birthday night every year. He was also one of the few artists to ever write a handwritten note thanking us for inviting him on the show. Many thanks, he wrote, it is very representative of what I am all about. In my mind, Buck Owens will always be a rock star.

Live From Austin, TX (Fats Domino)In my humble opinion, this is the definitive Fats Domino performance ever captured on camera. First of all, like his hero Louis Armstrong a generation earlier, Fats is synonymous with New Orleans. Not to mention the early days of rock-and-roll. Who doesn't love the infectious lyrics and floating melodies of "Blueberry Hill," "Ain't That A Shame," "I'm Walkin'," "I'm In Love Again" or "Blue Monday?" Music was practically a birthright for Antoine Domino, Jr., one of nine kids from a poor family. He never made it past 4th grade, but he was already playing boogie-woogie piano. By the time he cut his first record at 21, he already stood out from the crowd with his baby face smile, rollicking beat and that magic voice - youthful, warm and rich. Despite all the hits, his records don't do justice to the incredible excitement and energy of his live shows, driven by one of New Orleans' preeminent bandleaders and Fats' mentor, Dave Bartholomew. Fats is notoriously shy, but I pursued him to Las Vegas in my quest to lure him to the ACL stage. I found him in the old Elvis suite at The Flamingo, where he sat in his bathrobe peeling fresh Louisiana shrimp. I don't remember what I said or he said, but it worked - a few weeks later he came to Austin. When Hurricane Katrina hit, Fats had to be rescued from his home, sharing the trauma and devastation with his old neighbors in the Lower Ninth Ward. But don't worry - careers fade and styles change, but the music of Fats Domino is timeless.

Live From Austin, TX (John Hiatt)One could argue (at least I will) that John Hiatt was at a peak in his career when he took the Austin City Limits stage on December 14, 1993. His musical journey began in the 70's with an angry rocker image which gradually gave way to a mellower, more introspective country-folk-rock style. But labels don't do justice to his unusual imagery and evocative lyrics. He's never been afraid of tackling personal and social issues, and he does so with grace and style, but he's also perfectly capable of turning up the volume and giving younger rockers a run for their money.
This show originally aired on the heels of his highly-acclaimed album, PERFECTLY GOOD GUITAR, which The Los Angeles Times called "the most boldly rocking record in more than a decade." He is joined here by lead guitarist Michael Ward from School of Fish and bassist Davey Faragher and drummer Michael Urbano, both from Cracker. As always, Hiatt demonstrates his knack for turning terse phrases and creating musical stories that make him a rare "songwriter's songwriter."

Live From Austin, TX (Waylon Jennings)On-the-air since 1976, Austin City Limits has featured more than 500 different regional and internationally acclaimed artists on its stage, presenting the best of America's music from country, blues and folk to rock 'n' roll, bluegrass and zydeco.
Recorded on April 1, 1989 this performance by Waylon Jennings was no April Fools joke. This was the "new" Waylon, both personally and professionally. He had kicked a 20-year drug habit, split with RCA and signed a new deal with MCA Records.
He discovered a passion for songwriting, teamed with legendary producer Jimmy Bowen, and produced some of the best work of his 30-year-plus career. This ACL live set best captures the raw edge and driving urgency that pushed country music way past its Nashville boundaries starting in the mid-1970's.
Includes Waylon's definitive takes on Rodney Crowell's Ain't Living Long Like This, Elvis Presley's Suspicious Minds with wife Jessi Colter and Kris Kristoferson's Me and Bobby McGee along with his own classics Bob Wills Is Still the King and Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way.1. I'm A Ramblin' Man

ADAD-NEW-6315xJerry Lee Lewis
Live From Austin, TX (Jerry Lee Lewis)"Rock and Roll's the thing and Jerry Lee's the King " or so said an English fan once upon a time somewhere. Elvis fans might dispute that title, but nobody else in the history of popular music would dare call himself "The Killer." Of all the legends who came out of Sun Records in the 1950s - Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison - no one would have bet the last one standing would be the pill-popping, whiskey-guzzling, gun-waving hellion from Ferriday, LA except The Killer, of course. Jerry Lee Lewis took black rhythm & blues, white gospel, and other funky Mississippi sounds and turned them into rock and roll. But Jerry Lee's life also is, and has always been, his piano; he has kicked and banged and set on fire (literally) many of them over the course of six-plus decades. He almost never made it to Austin City Limits. He canceled one appearance and, only weeks before this recording on October 17, 1983, his wife died in a freak swimming pool accident at their home. But he did make it, and what we have here is one of the most amazing performances ever to go down on the ACL stage. Throughout the day he was a perfect gentleman, showing up on time and acting very graciously to one and all, but once he hit the stage, all hell broke loose. The songs speak for themselves; they're ALL here. For many years later, Jerry Lee would carry a tape of this show to play for friends (and himself, many times). When I tried to book him again for a return performance, the response was, "Jerry Lee doesn't think he could possibly do a better show."

Live From Austin, TX (Kris Kristofferson)Kris Kristofferson has an unusual resumÉ. Brownsville, Texas-born, football star and Golden Gloves boxer in college, Rhodes scholar at Oxford, Army captain and chopper pilot, studio janitor, part-time bartender, leading man opposite Barbra Streisand and Jane Fonda. But on his passport, under occupation, it reads songwriter. And that more than anything sums up the essence of Kris Kristofferson. His songs have been recorded by at least 500 other artists, from Willie and Johnny (Cash) to Janis Joplin and Ray Charles, but only that gravelly baritone of his can truly render those songs the way they were meant to be heard, from somewhere deep down in the heart of the man himself. This performance from September 1981 captures Kris in his prime. As he put it at the time, the music's a little closer to the soul because I'm creating and controlling the whole show. Classics like Me and Bobby McGee, Loving Her Was Easier, Why Me?, and Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down take on a whole new meaning coming from the man who wrote and lived the words.
This is the show that almost wasn't. As I was about to introduce Kris, the studio descended into total darkness. Apparently an errant rodent chewed through a major power line and the result was a black-out that lasted all night. The audience was led out by flashlight singing the ACL theme and Kris hung out on the roof with the crew. Fortunately, he came back the next night, and the resulting magic is here to enjoy.

Live From Austin, TX (Neko Case)This debut ACL performance on August 9, 2003, captures songs from Neko Case's three seminal solo releases at the time, combining elements of country, gospel and punk for a very unique sound. That's why pundits often find the music hard to classify. Which is a good thing. Her voice has been described as lush, torchy, melancholic - even scary (someone once wrote that "she sings like Patsy Cline's ghost"). She certainly doesn't sound like anything else on today's hit parade. Neko began her career as a drummer in a punk band, but it wasn't long before she started experimenting with songwriting and singing. She also continues to perform as a member of The New Pornographers, but her solo work is where her songwriting skills shine most. As she herself says, "I want to write songs that are timeless...maybe just something more like a novel than a short story." After the show, Neko took the time to write the ACL staff to thank everybody for making her, her band and friends feel so welcome. "I feel very proud of how the show turned out...It's so great to find out that something you admire so much is run by good people. Be proud! You kick ass!" You, too, Neko

Widespread Panic: Live From Austin, TexasIf you're among the legions of
Widespread Panic fans, you already know
that the band is legendary for never playing the same show twice -
or the same song the same way twice. What makes this performance
that much more special is the inspiring presence of founding member
Michael Houser (whose nickname "Panic" inspired the band's name),
who died of pancreatic cancer less than two years later. As much
as anything, this is a celebration of Houser's life and the sheer joy
he brought to a band that became one of the biggest draws on the
international concert circuit and created a vibe that makes the Panic
experience unique in the pop rock world.
But anybody who knows anything about them knows that
Widespread Panic is so much more than just a jam-happy rock band.
From the time Houser and John Bell ("JB") began playing duets around
Athens, Georgia, in the early 80's, their repertoire ranged from early
covers of the Grateful Dead and Bob Marley to a host of original songs
(among them "Space Wrangler", included here) that demonstrate, as
The Village Voice wrote, "a willingness to dip their collective toe into
just about any genre." This is classic Widespread Panic, including David
Schools on bass, John Hermann on keys, Todd Nance on drums and
Domingo Ortiz on percussion.
One look at this show and it'll quickly become obvious there
was something strange going on in the house that night. Yes, it was
Halloween, 2000, and the rabid fans went beyond even their usual
hard-core delirium. This was one time the audience almost threatened
to steal the show!

Live Alive, originally released in 1986, is an essential Blues double album compiled from four live performances by Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble. The performances were recorded in 1985 at the Montreux Jazz Festival (July 16), the Austin Opera House (July 17 + 18) and at Dallas Starfest (July 19). The amazing live record is filled with gems from SRV's first three albums, plus a great rendition of Willie The Wimp featuring his brother Jimmy (who also makes a guest appearance on Love Struck Baby, Look At Little Sister and Change It).
The track listing for Live Alive displays several of Stevie Ray Vaughan's biggest influences: Jimi Hendrix (Voodoo Child (Slight Return)), Stevie Wonder (Superstition), Howlin' Wolf (Commit A Crime) and Buddy Guy (Mary Had a Little Lamb).LP1

Gary Clark Jr. LiveThe anticipated first live release from Guitar sensation Gary Clark Jr.
To sum up Gary Clark Jr. is more challenging every day. He's a musical universe unto himself, expanding at a nearly immeasurable rate, ever more hard to define - as a mind-blowing guitarist, a dazzling songwriter and engagingly soulful singer. With his debut album Blak And Blu he has just become the first artist ever recognized by the Recording Academy with Grammy Award nominations in both the rock and R&B categories for the same album in the same year, winning the latter: Best Traditional R&B Performance" - "Please Come Home" (from the album Blak And Blu). Rolling Stone dubbed Clark "The King of the Summer Festivals" as he captivated audiences from Coachella to Glastonbury, Lollapalooza to the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, from Metallica's Orion Festival to Jay-Z's Made in America, and of course his hometown Austin City Limits Festival, where he his band set a daytime attendance record.LP 1

Kill From The Heart (Awaiting Repress)In the dark ages before SXSW, there was a bar called Raul's that was the center of the Austin, TX punk scene. Actually, it basically was the whole scene and the Dicks were born from it. The Dicks made a big splash with their first single, Hate the Police, and then recorded Kill From the Heart just before vocalist Gary Floyd moved to San Francisco.
In those magical couple years of the Dicks' infancy in Texas, they made a dynamic impact on many people with a stellar live show that mixed punk and politics. Alongside Floyd, the original lineup was guitarist Glen Taylor, bassist Buxf Parrot and drummer Pat Deason. Unfortunately, they imploded in 1983.
Alternative Tentacles is proud to present a very necessary reissue of the band's beloved first LP. If you aren't familiar with 1983's Kill From the Heart, then you need to be aware of this bona-fide classic of Reagan-era punk, a record that most likely inspired many of the artists that inspired you. Now with three critically acclaimed studio albums to his name, Matisyahu decided to return to where it all-began.
