    Half Of Where You Live

Half Of Where You Live is the second album by Berlin based electronic musician Gold Panda. The follow up to
his award winning Lucky Shiner released in 2010, his
new album is a distillation of that which that made his
previous work both loved and acclaimed, and also
displays an evolution of his sounds, stylings and
    methods.

Half Of Where You Live is the culmination of three years
    of touring and intermittent experimentation in his selfbuilt studio, the time between records was well-spent;
each track is informed by the experiences of his trips
through Asia and beyond. Shows and weeks away
forming personal experiences that ultimately became
the thematic basis for each track on the album.

Available as a double LP and CD, the record's aesthetic
is as nally crafted a piece of art as the music within -
created with Ghostly International artistic collaborators
    Andy Gilmore and Michael Cina.

2013 sees a full worldwide touring itinerary that has
already begun with shows in Australia and New
Zealand, running through Japan, and then Europe and
the US before worldwide festivals this summer.

To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the founding of Weather Report, the Zawinul estate is proud to release this live document of the supergroups appearance at the 1975 Jazztage Berlin, one of the oldest and most prestigious jazz festivals in Europe. This is the first time that this historic performance has been made available commercially

From the opening strains of Wayne Shorters propulsive Freezing Fire to Joe Zawinuls exotic Badia (a template for the world music movement that would come over a decade later), Live in Berlin, 1975 crackles with an audacious spirit of discovery and daring, underscored by an uncanny sense of group-thinking that allowed the band to be truly in the moment from tune to tune, from bar to bar.

    New In Berlin (Discontinued)

Persephone's Bees' new record New In Berlin is a self-produced album, recorded in San Francisco by Tom Ayres and Angelina Moysov at Decibelle Recording Studio. The songs on the album were written in Berlin cafes, London sidewalks, San Francisco and Oakland where the duo lived at the time before moving to NYC. Their previous album Notes From The Underworld was produced by hitmaker Eric Valentine and released here on Columbia Records; in France, Belgium and Switzerland on the indie label Kuskus. This new album was self-released in an experiment with direct fan communication, each song released first as an online single, a song every 6 weeks, each song having it's own page on the band's website with a short story, lyrics and video. The last single came out on July 17th, 2012, and these songs are now compiled onto this vinyl release plus digital download coupon for the album and extra versions of 3 songs sung in French, German and Russian. Spins at 45 rpm, comes complete with download codes.

One of Fitzgerald's most acclaimed live performances. At this concert in Berlin, Fitzgerald improvised lyrics for "Mack the Knife" after forgetting the original lyrics. In recognition of this, she received the Best Female Vocal Performance. This album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. During her Scat solo on 'How High the Moon', Fitzgerald quotes the Charlie Parker composition 'Ornithology', which is in fact based on the chord changes for 'How High the Moon', as a springboard for her own scat improvisation. This recording of 'How High the Moon' is considered one of Fitzgerald's best scat solos, if not one of the best in jazz. "Ella in Hollywood" features several songs that serve as starting points for Ella's seemingly effortless scat solos, and a selection of beautiful ballads. This album features Ella at the height of her vocal powers

    In Remembrance

Limited Edition of 1000 On Purple Vinyl With A DVD Of All Four Ballet Dance Films

DFA Records is proud to announce the release of In
Remembrance, a multimedia project by acclaimed
contemporary artist Delia Gonzalez. Delia transplanted
from Miami to New York City in the mid-1990s, working
in various dance and guerilla theatre troupes. It was
around this time that she met synth wizard Gavin Russom,
beginning a series of multi-disciplinary collaborations,
one of the most notable being their album of cosmic
acid-house "The Days of Mars", released by DFA in 2005.
Single "Relevee" is oft-cited as one of the high points
of DFA's early years, especially the monstrous remix by
    Detroit techno legend Carl Craig.

In Remembrance is the next landmark in Delia's artistic
pursuits. In Remembrance originates in a 2010 solo
show of the same name at Galleria Fonti in Naples, which
was further realized in 2012, with additional films, in the
exhibition "I Must Stop Here". The music was initially
inspired by a text by Henry Miller and a theory by spiritual
teacher George Gurdjieff, which states that "to play
scales is to become more in tune with your inner self."
This coincided conceptually with the music that Delia
had been making at the time. Both exhibitions consisted
of four 16mm ballet dance films, accompanied by music
composed by Gonzalez. In her words, "The film is meant to
re-create the fleeting sensation of inspiration - that sacred
feeling when suddenly your mind clears and you know
exactly what you're meant to create and become."

The films were exhibited for a third time at the Clocktower
Gallery in New York City in 2013, featuring a live electronic
adaption of the composition, performed with New York
underground musicians Bryce Hackford and Alice Cohen.
Bryce later contributed four remixes, which are included
on this album. Delia explains; "When I lived in Berlin I
became good friends with the artist and musician Viktor
Timofeev, who kept telling me about his best friend Bryce,
who he played music with. In 2012 we were all in Vienna
participating in a show entitled You Are Free. There I met
Bryce and I instantly loved him. In 2013 I moved to NYC
temporarily and ran into him at the New Museum and he
said, "we should get together and play". I took him up on
    it."

    We Don't Even Live Here

We Don't Even Live Here is the fourth solo album from Doomtree co-founder, punk philosopher and lyrical bomb-thrower Stefon Alexander, aka P.O.S. It's a tight, bombastic record that builds on the Minneapolis-bred rapper and producer's penchant for grinding beats and radical lyrics. But at the same time, WDELH marks a change -- in sound and in attitude.

Known for welding hip-hop with guitar squalls and screamed vocals, on WDELH P.O.S. steps away from his noisy past in favor of futuristic beats fit for a Berlin nightclub. Though his hip-hop foundation is firm on tracks like the fiery "Fuck Your Stuff" and the funky "Wanted/Wasted," the album brings banging new sounds from dance-oriented collaborators like German DJs Boyz Noise & Housemeister, Gayngs' Ryan Olson, and Innerpartysystem's Patric Russel

Also along for the ride are Bon Iver's Justin Vernon (who lends his shapeshifting vocals to the heartfelt bear-hug of an anthem "Where We Land") and P.O.S.' trusted Doomtree co-conspirators Lazerbeak, Cecil Otter, Mike Mictlan, and Sims. Bringing it all into focus is all-star producer and mix engineer Andrew Dawson (P.O.S.'s former high school classmate), who has worked on platinum releases from the likes of Kanye West, Jay-Z, Beyonce, Rick Ross, Lil Wayne and Fun.

In May of 2015, violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter gave a truly unique concert: rather than standing on stage in one of the world's renowned well-tempered grand concert halls, she spent two evenings playing in a tiny graffiti-scrawled nightclub in Berlin. Recorded in front of a standing-room only audience, this new 2-LP release includes popular works by Bach, Copland, Gershwin, Tchaikovsky, Vivaldi and many more. Mutter is joined by Mahan Esfahani, Lambert Orkis and the Mutter Virtuosi

Aretha Live At Fillmore West (Speakers Corner)

Live recordings come up with extremely different results: most of them land in the rubbish bin, some of them are available as bootleg copies when a star's career has ended and are passed on conspiratorially from one excited collector to another. Only a very few conserve real spirit and sheer enthusiasm, which no arranger or sound mixer can conjure up in the studio.

But even more sensational was Aretha Franklin's guest appearance at the Fillmore West, the legendary concert hall in San Francisco, which closed down shortly afterwards. Everyone knew who was going to perform, and yet everything was quite different on these three nights in the spring of 1971: her usual show band was left behind in Detroit and she appeared with King Curtis And The Kingpins - one of the most impressive bands around - accompanied by the trailblazers Cornel Dupree (g) and Bernard Purdie (dr). The Memphis Horns, a fantastic horn section, blast away in the background, their keen as a razor backings rising up to soaring heights. From Billy Preston's fingertips on the organ flows an aura of spiritual energy and Ray Charles, who by chance (but how fortuitous!) was among the audience also got his appearance in the telling title Spirit In The Dark. No words need be lost about the queen on the cover. For without the superb albums of the late Sixties, Aretha Franklin would never have become the USA's first sister of soul nor would she have appeared in the Fillmore West.

    Musicians:

Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles (vocals, electric piano)

King Curtis (tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone)

    Billy Preston (organ)

    Truman Thomas (Electric Piano)

    Cornell Dupree (guitar)

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl Cut from the Original Analogue EMI Master Tapes at Abbey Road Studios!

Paul Kletzki is best remembered today for his conducting career and many recordings but less well known is his pre-war career as a composer. Born in Poland in 1900, he joined its Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of fifteen as a violinist. After serving in the First World War, he studied philosophy at the University of Warsaw before moving to Berlin in 1921 to continue his studies. During the 1920s his compositions were championed by Arturo Toscanini; and Wilhelm FurtwÄngler, who permitted Kletzki to conduct the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in 1925.

Because he was Jewish, he left Nazi Germany in 1933 and moved to Italy, however due to the anti-semitism of the Italian Fascist regime he moved to the Soviet Union in 1936. He later went to live in Switzerland. From 1942 onwards Kletzki wrote no more compositions; having lost much of his family in the holocaust, Nazism had destroyed his spirit and his will to compose.

His conducting skills then came to the fore. Kletzki was invited by EMI's Walter Legge to conduct the newly-formed Philharmonia Orchestra in London and many fine recordings were made (including this Sibelius record in early stereo) for EMI. In 1954 he was appointed chief conductor of the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and between 1958 and 1961 he was principal conductor of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. From 1966 until 1970 he was the General Music Director of the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. He died in 1974.

In the original June 1956 review M. M. of the GRAMOPHONE wrote: Kletzki makes an impetuous attack on the music which is virtually completely successful, carried along by a marvellous quality of both orchestral playing and recording... Whether it is a sweep of full-bodied tone, a biting attack, a resonant pizzicato, or a sensitive solo that is called for, it is always there; even to tunes from the basses with a distinctly above-average proportion of note to rumble. And all of it set off by a brilliant quality of recording with fine internal balance... The new Kletzki... addresses the listener directly and convincingly.

Cut at Abbey Road Studios from the original stereo analogue master tapes with the Neumann VMS82 lathe fed an analogue pre-cut signal from a specially adapted Studer A80 tape deck with additional 'advance' playback head, making the cut a totally analogue process.

Pressed on 180g vinyl to audiophile standards at the Vinyl Factory, Hayes, using the old EMI Records presses.

Recorded in stereo on 15 & 16 July 1955 at the Kingsway Hall, London. Produced by the legendary Walter Legge and engineered by Douglas Larter and Neville Boyling.

This title is not eligible for discount.

Newport Jazz Festival: Live At Carnegie Hall (Pure Pleasure)

This is a wonderful live album. Recorded toward the end of Ella's career, by concert's end it is apparent that she has about lost her voice, but not the audience's adoration. The album showcases her in various settings: with the (obviously) reconstituted Chick Webb Orchestra, with Ellis Larkins, with Joe Pass and with Tommy Flanagan (of course); the album also has some nods to the Webb Orchestra, noteworthy for late-career blowing by 'Lockjaw' Davis. Highlights: Nice Work If You Can Get It, Good Morning Heartache (an intended and most worthy tribute to Lady Day), Miss Otis Regrets, the first encore of Some of these Days, and intended set-ender of Ella doing what she does best, scatting through Lemon Drop.

    Musicians:

    • Ella Fitzgerald (vocal)

    • Chick Webb Orchestra

Recording: July 1973 at Carnegie Hall, New York

Wild Bill Davis And Johnny Hodges In Atlantic City (Speakers Corner)

In the Sixties, the two befriended musicians Wild Bill Davis and Johnny Hodges often met up for jam sessions, at galas with Duke Ellington, and in various studios to make recordings for several record companies. However, their live concerts in Grace's Little Belmont in Atlantic City in 1966 were the declared highlights for critics, the public and musicians alike. This is not only proved by the masses of people who swarmed to the club, which was always jam-packed, it is also reflected in the sales figures of their recordings.

On the present recording, the listener is offered a first-class programme of own compositions, Duke Ellington hits, and head arrangements. Good Queen Bess and Rockville are quite exceptional, and the other titles are hardly less enthralling. The rhythm group is hotter than hot with Lionel Hampton's Bobby Durham on the drums, and the two grand old men of swing really let themselves go. The trombonist Lawrence Brown, musical buddy from the Duke Ellington Orchestra, grooves in the background and we can be happy (thanks to the producer Rad McCuen!) that we can still thoroughly enjoy this great disc almost 50 years later.

Recording: August 1966 live at Grace's Little Belmont, Atlantic City (USA), by Ed Begley

    Production: Brad McCuen

    Wig Out At Jagbags

Probably the most underrated guitar player of his
    generation - Rolling Stone

Wig Out At Jagbags is Stephen Malkmus' sixth
solo effort with the Jicks and finds the former
Pavement leader (alongside Joanna Bolme, Jake
Morris & Mike Clark) at his most playful and
joyous in recent memory. The album, written
in Berlin & recorded in Belgium with longtime
Pavement and Jicks associate Remko Schouten is
a looser, more unbridled affair that gathers those
trademark guitar moves and lyrical acrobatics into
an amalgam of what SM himself calls: "Projected
Imaginings of ROck and ROll from the freezing
north, rendered by West Coast stalwarts and a
    Dutch Uncle".

Malkmus, having lived in Berlin for the past 2
years, combines the manical wizadry of Can
(who Malkmus covered for Record Store Day last
year) and the West Coast imaginings of Jefferson
Airplane. Malkmus also cites "Cologne Germany,
Mark Von Schlegel, Rosemarie Trockel, Von Sparr
and Jan Lankisch, Can and Gas. Imagined Weezer/
Chili Peppers, SIc Alps, UVA in the late 80's, NYRB,
    Aroma Charlottenburg, inactivity, Jamming, Indie
guys trying to sound Memphis, Flipper, Pete
Townshend, Pavement, the Joggers, The NBA,
home life in the 2010's " as inspiration.

As it spans nods to the embryonic days of college
rock on "Lariat", (see those Bongwater and Sun
City Girls shoutouts), the galloping guitars and
horns on "Chartjunk" and arrives at the rallying
coda of "Surreal Teenagers", Wig Out At Jagbags is
a portrait of an an American master stretching out
& showing no signs of slowing down.

    Old Boys

Bishop Morocco is the musical vision of James Sayce and Jake Fairly. The Toronto-based duo recorded its 2008 self-titled debut at a homemade studio inside their shared in Groningen, Netherlands, earning international attention from the likes of Parisian tastemaker Collette and helping develop a strong following at home in Canada. That followed six years of Fairly (aka Fairmont) living in Berlin turning out techno hits on labels like Border Community and Kompakt and Sayce playing in bands like Tangiers and the Deadly Snakes.

Two years later, Bishop Morocco arrives on Arts & Crafts with Old Boys, a six-track EP on which the band strays from its original new wave influences towards a thicker, more contemplative sound, aided by the addition of Ian Worang on guitar and Jon McCann on drums. A savvy delivery loaded with smart electronic instrumentation and richly textured melodies, Old Boys was recorded at another homemade studio, this time inside Fairly's mom's guest bedroom in West Toronto.

It's at once proof of Bishop Morocco's collective progression as it is an expression of constant shifts in hometown imagery and the ongoing personal evolution of its principal members. The release marks Bishop Morocco's arrival as a fully realized project, relying less on paths forged by members favorite bands, and instead endeavoring to blaze a stark trail all its own.

'Aventine' is the second studio album from Agnes Obel. It is the follow up to her critically acclaimed debut album 'Philharmonics' (2010), which has sold 450,000 copies across Europe, achieving Platinum status in France and Belgium, five times Platinum in her native Denmark, where Agnes picked up five Danish Music Awards (the Danish Brits) in 2011.

Originally from Copenhagen, Agnes has lived in Berlin since 2006, where 'Aventine' was recorded at her Chalk Wood Studios between January and May this year. Like 'Philharmonics', the new album was written, arranged, and produced by Agnes, who provides piano and vocals. Anne M_ller, who has also played with Nils Frahm, adds cello, with Mika Posen of Timber Timbre playing the violin and viola on 'The Curse', 'Pass Them By' and 'Fivefold'. Robert Kondorossi of Budzillus plays guitar on 'Pass Them By'.

While touring 'Philharmonics' I kept on getting all these ideas for recording, and I wanted to explore the cello and other string instruments says Agnes of 'Aventine'. I recorded everything quite closely, miking everything closely in a small room, with voices here, the piano here - everything is close to you. So it's sparse, but by varying the dynamic range of the songs I could create almost soundscapes. I was able to make something feel big with just these few instruments.

    Roger Waters The Wall

Limited Edition Triple 180 Gram LP Set
Accompanies The Concert Film, The Wall, Filmed During Waters' 2010-2013 Tour

Now that Roger Waters has released his new concert film of The Wall, filmed on the former Pink Floyd singer-songwriter's recent world tour, he is putting out an accompanying soundtrack album. Between 2010 and 2013, the singer performed the 1979 double-album, home to Comfortably Numb and Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2), live more than 200 times. Like the film, the soundtrack, titled Roger Waters The Wall, contains recordings from around the world and is being released as a 3 LP Set.

Waters performed the album for approximately 4.5 million people during the course of the tour with help from an 11-person backing group. Singer Robbie Wyckoff handled the vocal parts that Floyd's David Gilmour sang on the original record, while the guitars were handled by Dave Kilminster, former SNL bandleader G.E. Smith and Snowy White, the last of whom performed on Floyd's original The Wall tour. Waters' son Harry performed Hammond organ and piano on the tour.

Frequent Radiohead collaborator Nigel Godrich, who provided music production and mixing for the film, produced the album.

The soundtrack will run longer than the original Wall album, which spanned only two LPs, as it includes two songs removed from the original release - Last Few Bricks and What Shall We Do Now? - which Floyd had added back in for live performances. This version of The Wall also includes The Ballad of Jean Charles de Menezes, which Waters incorporated into his performances of the album beginning in 2011 in tribute to a 27-year-old Brazilian man that London police killed thinking, wrongly, that he was a terrorist.

The soundtrack marks the third time The Wall has been released as a live album. In 1990, Waters released The Wall: Live in Berlin, which he'd recorded and filmed less than a year after the Berlin Wall fell with a star-studded cast, including Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Marianne Faithfull, the Band, SinÉad O'Connor, Cyndi Lauper and Tim Curry, among others. A decade later, Pink Floyd released Is There Anybody Out There? The Wall Live 1980-81, which contains recordings of Waters' final tour as a member of the band.

Waters told Rolling Stone that the meaning behind The Wall hadn't changed for him over the years. The context changes, but the story remains the same, he said. If people see this movie, what I hope is that that they may look at one another and go, 'You know what? We are a community, and we are many. There are a lot of us.'

Carlos Santana & Buddy Miles: Live! (Speakers Corner)

'Live' was the watchword of the liberated and permissive post-Woodstock era, when anyone and everyone could do wonderful things and musicians really let themselves go - and it opened the door for Santana and his musicians. While devotees of pure styles found it hard to dip into the bubbling melting pot of progressive rock, others - hungry for emotion - plunged eagerly into the moloch world known as 'Sounds of the 70s'.

Among the great events during this time was the get-together of Santana and a grandiose group of musicians together with Jimmy Hendrix's ex-drummer Buddy Miles at the Sunshine Festival in Hawaii. Inspired by the electrifying atmosphere we hear the smacking sound of an organ in John McLaughlin's Marbles, lush rocking Latin grooves (Lava) and gospel-like vocal artistry (Evil Ways). After an intensively re-worked version of the old favourite Them Changes, in which the band certainly lets one know that they can be 'heavy' when they want, the musicians let themselves go in 25 improvised minutes in Free Form Funkafide Filth. Such unleashed power could never be tamed and captured on tape in the studio simply because it can only be created in the freedom of an open-air stage.

    Last Night Becomes This Morning

Their second album, following 2002's critically acclaimed "This Flag Signals Goodbye" is front man Dave Doughman's indie version of "Running On Empty". Recorded on the road, between and while on tour, at soundchecks, in hotel rooms, in rehearsal halls, and on the bus, it's an album about two artists in love and how their craft keeps them apart. Where "Running On Empty" told of the battle to cope with fame and fortune, "Last Night" chronicles the struggle to live life on the road in spite of lack of fame or fortune. In place of the sold out arenas, its live sound comes in busking in an empty Berlin subway station.

    Habeas Corpus

St. Louis-born brothers Lillian, Eve and Bosh Berlin have been working diligently for nearly two years on their sophomore album, which can be described as an extension and evolution of their 2005 debut Ahead Of The Lions, which featured the explosive first single 'Bom Bom Bom.' The first album's critical acclaim and the band's consistently electrifying live shows have set the stage for a breakthrough moment. Living Things unique story (mother was a white anarchist activist who once tried to join the Black Panthers, father was a carpet salesman who did time for trafficking in stolen goods) and their striking visual image set them apart from their peers. Habeas Corpus, spearheaded by the delirious lead off single 'Let It Rain,' is busting into the world's consciousness fully realized in every way, one of the first truly significant album releases of 2009.

    MTV Unplugged - Summer Solstice

In the land of the midnight sun, the clocks tick slightly different than they do elsewhere. This is especially true during the summer solstice, when the sun hardly sets at all, bathing the small Norwegian island of Giske - where a-ha played their first ever two acoustic concerts - in an eerie twilight.

Giske is a tiny island in close proximity to the city of Ålesund on the shore of the North Atlantic Ocean - a popular city much frequented by day trippers arriving on huge cruise ships during Norway's short yet intense summer season. But a-ha's audience didn't get to Giske on such boats. Coming from destinations all over the world, for them getting to Giske meant embarking on a plane to Oslo and from there to Ålesund. And from there you finally have to drive through a series of seemingly endless and frighteningly deep undersea tunnels to reach Giske, an island so beautiful and, well, remote, that one immediately wonders why a-ha handpicked this specific location to play their long awaited first MTV Unplugged shows on the night of the 2017 summer solstice, right where the world seems to end.

Pål Waaktaar-Savoy: "Choosing Giske is like most of the things we do: It's been 50% chance and 50% planned. We were discussing many different places to play these special shows - among them Manaus in the Amazon jungle, Berlin, London and New York. At the end of the day it was the Ocean Sound Recordings studio in Giske that made the difference. We knew that we could rehearse undisturbed in an extremely good sounding facility."

a-ha booked the Ocean Sound Recordings studio, which looks out onto the ocean, to revisit their own back catalogue for two weeks together with producer Lars Horntveth, who had already been working on the acoustic arrangements for more than half a year. The nearby Øygardshallen (Giske Harbour Hall) turned out to be the perfect venue to stage their two first ever acoustic shows: They simply had to lay cables from A to B and then were able to use the studio at Ocean Sound Recordings to capture the shows perfectly. a-ha performed in front of an audience of just 250 people - the Øygardshallen's glass front allowed the audience to gaze out into the pale night and onto a number of LED video steles that had been set up behind the band, serving as a minimalist backdrop to the concert. Suffice to say, the concerts were sold-out within minutes, as a-ha were to play "concerts so close to our audience like never before". As Magne Furuholmen puts it: "These were by far the most intimate concerts we've ever given."

Yet the beauty of the North Atlantic Ocean, the light of the midnight sun and the exclusivity of the concerts are only one half of the story. The other half is that the idea of a-ha playing their vast catalogue of world hits stripped down to their very essence is indeed a promising endeavor.

Pål: "We've talked about this idea for so many years. And in many of our concerts we've also played some acoustic songs. But if you consider that we don't use much technology at all when we write the songs, the idea an entirely acoustic show makes total sense. Playing all these songs now in their acoustic versions is like returning to their origins."

Magne expands the thought in a more universal direction: "Most of our songs draw inspiration from a childhood directly exposed to Norwegian culture, even the folk music tradition, perhaps more so than we thought. We were constantly faced with questions from journalists implying how our 'Norwgian-ness' was a unique part of our sound, even though we lived and worked in London.

As a creative person it is almost easier to tap into this nordic mindest from a distance. History is full of good examples of how iconic Norwegians in the past did their best work away from home; The writer Henrik Ibsen wrote on universal topics with a strong Norwegian tone while living in Italy, Edvard Munch's melancholic force defined expressionism while living in Berlin - yet he simply couldn't be from anywhere but this country. And of course there is Edvard Grieg, who took a lot of inspiration directly from folk music. His music always felt particularly resonant in our ears growing up. With such strong figures and influences defining what it is to be a Norwegian, it becomes part of what you are. Our darker, melancholic streak definitely harks back to these early influences. We feel connected to all that, which is why we thought returning home for this project was a very natural step.

Morten Harket stresses the fact how crucial it was to have arranger/producer Lars Horntveth on board as a catalyst and fearlessly driving force behind the scenes: "He confronted our music by presenting completely new arrangements, also taking out 'untouchable' parts, which easily came across as being disrespectful. I say this as a compliment, by the way... And of course we hated it! But we also needed it! This was exactly what we had asked of him. We needed someone who would boldly question everything that we stood for as a band - someone who could stand up to us. Of course it led to shouting matches. It's part of the creative process. Lars deserves the credit for bringing the band closer together than we have been for a very long time."

For the MTV Unplugged shows, a-ha played 17 songs in completely new arrangements as well as two new songs and two cover versions on vintage acoustic instruments, accompanied by a backing band featuring Karl Oluf Wennerberg on drums, Even Ormestad on acoustic bass, Morten Qvenild on piano and various acoustic keyboards, Lars Horntveth on multiple instruments and Madeleine Ossum on violin and vocals, Tove Margrethe Erikstad on cello and Emilie Heldal Lidsheim on viola and backing vocals. Furthermore, a total of four guest stars served as duet partners for Morten Harket. Most notably, Echo & The Bunnymen's Ian McCulloch had been invited by Magne Furuholmen to sing "Scoundrel Days" and Ian's very own "The Killing Moon" on the first of the two shows. On the second night, a-ha were joined by Alison Moyet of Yazoo fame to duet with Morten on "Summer Moved On". Highasakite's Ingrid Helene Håvik guested on "The Sun Always Shines on TV" on both nights, while, last but not least, American singer Lissie did the same on "I've Been Losing You".

"In the cacophonic world of popular music, with its high-impact effects and productions, the music is often somewhat lost as it ends up being premeditated." Morten Harket addresses the subject of subtlety: "The world of pop is a world where everything always has to be more than anything else."

Attending the concerts and the last full day of the rehearsals, you could tell that the whole group and especially Morten did indeed try to reveal the soul of each and every song performed. During the last run-through on the day before the first night the band took things extremely seriously. Songs were started, stopped and deconstructed. Discussions between Morten and the group as well as with the recording engineers dealt with the tiniest details of sound, cohesiveness and attitude. As a result, the two shows benefited profoundly, both in terms of microstructure (the new arrangements reveal so much of the songs' essences), as well as in that the overall dramaturgic arc of the concerts, which steadily built towards a climax that would astound even the most dedicated follower of the group. During the encore, a-ha would play - "as usual" - their first and biggest hit to date, "Take On Me". But an unexpected chord change in the chorus and the skeletal arrangement not only allowed a new perspective on the song's lyrics, it also left the audience with tears in their eyes.

Magne: "When you rearrange songs for an acoustic rendition it is also an opportunity to do more than to just simplify them. I especially like what happened when we took a fresh look at Take on me, which went from being an uptempo syntheziser-driven popsong to a much more melancholic, yearning ballad in this slowed down arrangement, it shows with much more clarity how the song at its core is not some standalone upbeat track, but belongs squarely inside our catalogue alongside more thoughtful, darker songs like scoundrel days etc.

There are only a few bands in the world who can look back on similarly close ties with the music channel MTV as a-ha. Alongside the likes of Duran Duran and Yello, in 1985 a-ha were worldwide pioneers who immediately understood the power of the music video as both a narrative and commercial tool. Steve Barron's classic "Take On Me" clip is still a milestone of music video and in 2003 was voted by the MTV audience as one of the top ten best videos ever made. There have long been efforts by a-ha and MTV to organize an Unplugged concert.

The fact that the two MTV Unplugged concerts in June 2017 actually took place on Giske also left a deep impression on a-ha themselves. Like every other band that has been successful on a worldwide scale for over three decades, a-ha have had their share of problems, split-ups and re-unifications. A thoughtful Magne reflects: "After such a long time, a-ha have now become a band that simply continues from project to project. This turned out to be a very healthy approach for the three of us, because going acoustic also had the taste of a new project."

Pål: "When we recorded our last few albums, we were sometimes working pretty isolated from each other. We should do this again - sitting and recording in the same room together for a couple of weeks or months and see what comes out as a result. We may argue about a lot of things, but we are also a band that has very close ties."

After the closing applause that seemed would never end, the band left the stage and walked out of Øygardshallen into the living daylights. Having performed two triumphant concerts together, the three band mates climbed into three separate vehicles and headed off into the sunlit night. But everybody in the audience had a feeling that a-ha had now just opened a brand new chapter in their unparalleled career. To quote a line from one of the highlights of these unplugged shows: "Cause I've been told / Stay on these roads / We shall meet, I know."
