Still ClimbingLeslie West is set to releases his album Still Climbing in 2013 via Provogue Records / Mascot Label Group.
Originality, excitement, honesty and survival are all part of what makes a legend, and those qualities ripple through every song on the album. It's a testimonial to the strength and durability of West's artistry. Born October 22, 1945, as he approaches his 68th birthday, West has packed some of the most soulful and searing vocal performances of his half-century career into these 11 tracks. His guitar has never sounded more massive or riff-orientated.
What's different on Still Climbing is that I wanted my guitars to sound as big as I look. So I used four of my Dean Signature model guitars with my Mountain of Tone humbucking pickups. I plugged them into my Blackstar amps - no pedals - and turned them up loud and raw, and what you hear is exactly what I did in the studio. These Blackstar amps deliver everything I need without 'confidence' pedals. I played one of the early tracks we recorded for Slash, and he said, 'That is as heavy as it gets.'
Still Climbing is co-produced by West and Mike Metal Goldberg, who engineered all of the sessions. Songs like Dyin' Since The Day I Was Born, Hatfield or McCoy, and Busted, Disgusted or Dead establish a new litmus test for heavy.
The latter features West and Johnny Winter on duelling slide guitars. West also gave up smoking cigarettes and pot after a bout with bladder cancer, so it's no wonder many of Still Climbing's numbers explore the theme of survival and, ultimately, triumph. To that end, West avows, Not only am I lucky to be here, but because I stopped smoking my voice is now stronger than it's ever been - as strong as my guitar playing.
His inclusion of Feeling Good, a song by British actor-musician Anthony Newley that was made famous by Steve Winwood's group Traffic, is a testimonial to all of that. Its lyrics celebrate a new dawn for me as West and his long-time buddy Dee Snider (Twisted Sister) trade vocal lines.
West has always been an outstanding vocalist, earning comparisons to soul legends like Otis Redding since his 1969 debut Mountain, which gave his historic band its name. On Still Climbing West revisits the catalogue of another classic soul man, Percy Sledge, with the enduring When a Man Loves a Woman. He's joined by now 32 year-old soul man Jonny Lang, who he met 15 years ago when Lang was a rising guitar prodigy. West says they cut the tune side-by-side in the studio, their soaring guitars and voices twining to bring fresh blood and a blues-soaked arrangement to the song.
When a Man Loves a Woman, Never Let Me Go and Fade Into You explore a romantic theme. In 2009 West married his wife Jenni, who co-wrote many of Still Climbing's songs with the guitar giant.
Balls, guts, heart - more words that are part of West's legend and describe the roaring crescendos and deep emotional roots of Still Climbing - and West himself. You know, when it comes to talent, we don't all move at the same rate of speed, West muses. Some people start at the top of their game and after 10 or 20 years you wonder what the hell happened to them. I like to joke that the older I get the better I used to be, but after giving up drugs and smoking, my voice can hit notes that I never could reach before. I'm thankful for that.1. Loud hailer, which is another name for a megaphone, is a suitable moniker for an album that isn't shy about speaking its mind. The two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer explains, I really wanted to make a statement about some of the nasty things I see going on in the world today, and I loved the idea of being at a rally and using this loud device to shout my point of view.
To help him write the 11 tracks on LOUD HAILER, Beck enlisted two fierce young females from London - singer Rosie Bones and guitarist Carmen Vandenberg. Never Too Loud (Awaiting Repress)Not too many people outside of Canada and Scandinavia seemed to notice, but Toronto-based trio Danko Jones were responsible for some of the most electrifying, ass-kicking, fearsomely focused hard rock of the third millennium's first decade. That being said, after failing to attract a larger audience with two unquestionably stellar albums released through Razor & Tie, the band found itself relegated to smaller indie label Bad Taste for 2008's Never Too Loud, meaning that not even U.S. distribution was a given. Notwithstanding this problematic setback, though, Danko Jones showed they still held an ace or two in their hands by securing the services of hotshot producer Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Velvet Revolver, Rush, etc.) to oversee Never Too Loud's sessions, and their new ally seemed to be fan enough to not attempt altering the band's sound, even while helping the group to cast a slightly wider stylistic net beyond its usual Thin Lizzy and AC/DC-fishing grounds. Among the resulting surprises was the acoustic guitar-driven nostalgia of Take Me Home and a pair of stoner rock-flavored offerings in the Fu Manchu-like, groove-oriented opener Code of the Road and the extended six-minute head nod of Forest for the Trees (Danko's longest track ever, by far), which culminated with guest vocals from Kyuss legend John Garcia. Beyond this experimental trio, though, Never Too Loud remained relatively faithful to the familiar Danko Jones sound -- albeit rarely played quite as loud as on prior releases, ironically enough. Sure, the punkish pogo-fest of Let's Get Undressed and the raging hormones of teenage fantasy Still in High School both recalled some of the band's wilder, earliest outbursts, and impertinent challenges like Your Tears, My Smile and Something Better confirmed the enduring chip on eponymous frontman Danko Jones' shoulder. But the mellower, melody-ridden King of Magazines and Ravenous definitely valued quality over quantity, and both the album's worst and best offerings paid serious dues to the band's chief influences, the closing title track collapsing under the weight of dull repetition (akin to AC/DC's least inspired latter-day songs) while first single City Streets reached for the heavens of perfection with that glorious blend of crunchy riffs and longing melodies (the very same ones that earned Thin Lizzy's Philip Lynott his angel's wings). And so, somewhere between the same ol' and brand new, the disappointing and sublime, Never Too Loud proved to be yet another enjoyable LP from Danko Jones, despite ranking just a notch below their most recent triumphs.

SuchnessSuchness is the debut LP from We Are Loud Whispers, a dreamy duo featuring Sonya
Westcott (Arthur & Yu) and Ayumu Haitani (4 Bonjour's Parties). Seattleite Westcott met
Haitani-who lives in Saitama on the island of Honshu-when Arthur & Yu toured Japan in
2007. The two have not seen each other since and are separated by the world's largest
body of water, but that was no deterrent to forming a band together. Assembled over email,
Suchness transcended geographical and language barriers-and traditional ideas of what a
"band" is-in its making.
Haitani would write and record instrumentals, upload them, and send to Westcott. As she
listened thousands of miles away, she would pen lyrics to his orchestration, meditations on
feeling alone even when partnered, wanting to control the uncontrollable, and on the power
and promise of reaching for someone's hand. The song titles themselves tell a story:
"Starcrossed," "This Time," "I Hate to Say Goodbye." After writing lyrics, Westcott would
record a vocal track, upload, hit send, and wait for these starcrossed halves to meet and
become complete-a process reminiscent of The Postal Service's Give Up (fitting since
Jimmy Tamborello sings on track "Glossolalia").
Despite the modern magic required to realize Suchness, and its intricacy of its electronic
orchestration and parade of horns, timpani, loops and effects, the record breathes with an
organic ease. The layers of complexity never sound cluttered, melding together in Zen
simplicity. Westcott's airy whisper floats above heartbeat percussion, evoking the emotive

BonesOn The Delta Saints' new album, Bones, their first for Loud & Proud Records, the Nashville-based band have stripped their roots/blues sound down to its essence, having rearranged the elements into something uniquely their own. Steeped in rock 'n' roll's building blocks - country, R&B, soul and gospel - The Delta Saints' second full-length effort explores influences like Jack White, The Black Keys, My Morning Jacket, Band of Horses and Led Zeppelin. Producer/engineer/mixer and Third Man Records alum, Eddie Spear [Jack White, Arctic Monkeys, Neil Young] provided a ghostly, psychedelic atmosphere at Nashville's Sputnik Sound studios, yielding a sound unlike anything they have created before.
"We got to the point where what we were recording and playing had veered from what we were listening to and loving on our turntables, which can lead to discontent," said Louisiana-born singer/lyricist Ben Ringel, who co-founded the band almost eight years ago with fellow Belmont University student, Kansas native bassist David Supica. Soon after, they were joined by Tennessee-bred guitarist Dylan Fitch and later, after a health scare with the band's former harmonica player, enlisted Louisville resident and keyboardist, Nate Kremer, who was added to the lineup only two weeks before a two month long European tour.
Taking a novel approach of writing songs spontaneously in the studio, The Delta Saints were challenged to create in the moment and as a result, Bones is their most adventurous effort yet. The album is a collection of eclectic songs, beginning with The White Stripes-meets-Led Zeppelin fuzz-toned garage-rock blast of "Sometimes I Worry." The spare, spooky strains of "Butte la Rose" tell the band's tale of a Louisiana town purposely flooded and displaced five years ago to save New Orleans. The Grapes of Wrath drama of "Dust," based on Ringel's grandfather, an East Kansas farmer, builds to a primal wail at nature with a stunning coda in which Dylan Fitch's guitar drops out and Kremer's B3 organ provides the climax. The title track, "Bones" features hoodoo organ riffs and African-influenced trance music, which came from listening to the Sahara desert African groove of Niger's Tuareg guitarist Omara "Bombino" Moctar and Mali's Tinariwen. The grindhouse honky-tonk chain gang chants of "Heavy Hammer" celebrates the work ethic in no uncertain terms, a call for unity in the wake of Ringel's frustration about getting stuck in the rat race and feeling trapped by some of life's mundane tasks. "Berlin," the first song they recorded after adding Nate on keys, started out as an instrumental penned in the title city while on tour. It eventually metamorphosed into a country twang intro and a prog-rock jam. Bones is a complete work veering between despair and apocalyptic dread.
"We're trying to push ourselves forward to do something more modern, but at the same time incorporating where we come from," explained Ringel.
"It was incredible to be able to write a song on the spot and immediately hear what it sounded like," added Supica. "It was a great way to capture the magic right when you come up with an idea, preserving that raw element. We were used to playing a song for months on the road before we recorded it. Still, on the flip side, it was absolutely terrifying to sit in the studio watching the clock tick and waiting for a song to come out. That's where (producer) Ed Spear came into play; he was so good at keeping us pointed in the right direction."
"This record was made out of both necessity and desire. We needed to be fulfilled and surprised by music again, and we also needed to fulfill that love of writing and recording again."
The Delta Saints have independently released two EPs (2010's Pray On and A Bird Called Angola), a full-length album (2012's Death Letter Jubilee) and a live disc (2014's Live at Exit/In). They have spent the last eight years touring the US averaging almost 200 shows per year, organically growing their audience, fan by fan, city by city. Major appearances include several festivals including Wakarusa, Summer Camp, Harvest, The Ride, Summerfest and The Simple Man Cruise. A testament to their mixed appeal, they have opened for such diverse acts as Blackberry Smoke, Robert Randolph & The Family Band, Taj Mahal, Dickey Betts and Michael Franti & Spearhead.
The Delta Saints have also have a large international fan base having toured Europe a total of six times, selling out countless venues and playing more than 200 shows in Spain, Sweden, France, Switzerland and Germany, as well as several festivals in Holland (Moulin Blues, Ribs and Blues), Belgium (Gevarenwinkel) and Germany (Grolsch Blues Fest).
With all that they've accomplished as a hard-working group on their own, The Delta Saints have earned their graduation to industry veteran Tom Lipsky's Loud & Proud Records (which has been the home of Rush, Lynyrd Skynyrd, KISS, Robert Plant, Rob Zombie, Lenny Kravitz and The String Cheese Incident, among others).
"Don't look so tired, my dear," sings Ringel in Bones' closing track, "Berlin," echoing the band's progress. "We may be bruised, but the day is almost here."
"It's hard to see progress when you're in the middle of things," said Supica about The Delta Saints' ambitions. "We try to take stock every six months or so and look back from where we've come, from eating at McDonald's and sleeping on people's floors to staying at a Motel 6 and graduating to La Quinta. We mark our success by the hotel chain where we're staying. When we get to Marriott, we know we've made it."

Jonathan picked up the guitar and began writing songs and Richard had been playing drums since elementary school. Whether it's Spinal Tap gloriously losing the plot, the escapades of Tenacious D getting them into trouble, or the phenomenon that is Dethklok tearing up the album charts, comedy and heavy music have long made for great bedfellows. Jim Breuer is a man who understands this, and with Songs From The Garage, his first full-length with longtime backing band The Regulators, he delivers both in his inimitable style. "I basically want the crowd to have a blast, and I write what I feel that I would love if I was in the crowd. So, going into the record the music had to be killer and have great hooks, that was most important, and I wanted to balance that with something that's funny," he enthuses. "I wanted to bring the smile back to hard rock that has a nice punch to it - and in doing so hopefully bridge the gap so my generation and their kids will come see this live together!"
In realizing this, Breuer has delivered a record that is pure, unadulterated fun, and yes, it rocks. From crunchy opening romp "Thrash" through the swaggering "Who Better Than Us?" to the gloriously deranged excitement suffusing "Sugar Rush", his exuberance is infectious, and he challenges you to keep your ass from shaking and the corners of your mouth twitching while it thunders from the speakers. Throughout, his influences bleed through, comfortably blurring the line between hard rock and metal while every anthemic chorus lodges irrevocably in the hippocampus. While a great many 'comedy rock' records are ultimately pretty throwaway and last as long as the joke stays funny, this is not the case with Songs From The Garage. True to his game plan, Breuer has made great songs, ones that persistently draw a smile and will fit comfortably when shuffled among the likes of Megadeth, AC/DC, Judas Priest and more contemporary bands, such as Avenged Sevenfold and Halestorm.
Having finally made the album that has been burning to get out of him since his teens, Breuer couldn't be happier with the result. OpticaShout Out Louds took their time with these songs, recording for about 1.5 years in a small Stockholm studio and producing themselves for the first time with help from Johannes Berglund. A theme emerged and Optica was born, an album celebrating color and light from a band confident in its sound.
Shout Out Louds comment: "In our eagerness to please no one but ourselves this time around, we decided to take on the challenge of producing our own music for the first time ever. Our close friend and sound aficionado of choice Johannes Berglund and his studio in Stockholm presented us with an ideal package for the endeavor. Ease My MindEase My Mind, the fifth full-length by Shout Out Louds, is a welcome return from these Swedish pop masters.
In their 15 years as a band, Shout Out Louds have toured the world many times. The band played a show in the Brazilian rainforest with a freezer box for a dressing room. They once performed in Yokohama,Japan, for an audience of two Austrians. They played in a Sicilian rainstorm so heavy they had to shake out their instruments afterwards,with the soaked backdrop left hung to dry on a hotel façade. Themusic sites will remind you that the band have performed for DavidLetterman and Jay Leno and toured with The Strokes during their heyday, but most importantly, they have released four albums of brilliant pop music.
Ease My Mind was recorded with Fredrik Swahn (from the band The Amazing) who filled the band with such new energy that they were willing to commute to the 'burbs during the darkest months of the year. He was joined by Måns Lundberg who produced the song Souvenirs and Axel Algmark who produced No Logic andAngel. The band recruited Lars Skoglund for drums, known for his work with Lykke Li.
Adam and Bebban in the band write: The world is a different place now than it was in the beginning of the 2000s. We didn't grow up very aware of political messages in music and probably didn't feel much of an urgent need to understand the world around us, in that sense. However, that has changed over the years. The world has seemed extremely dystopic and frail for quite a while now, and having children and getting older forces you to open your eyes to issues more devastating than heartbreak and feeling lost. But in our music, we still allow ourselves to address things the way we always have: through emotions rather than analysis. Stravinsky - The Rite Of SpringWhile he was finishing the score of The Firebird, the idea came to Stravinsky for a pagan, ritual scenario. The background history of Le Sacre du printemps is well known: while the modernists praised the work, the conservative public thought they were being hoaxed. The reason for their irritation and the scandalous fiasco of the premiere is still audible to this day. Stravinsky carries the aggressive, hammering rhythms to the extreme, casting them in atonal harmonies which feed on the alternation between a »red-hot and a mild mixture«, as Stravinsky put it.
Dorati urges on his ensemble with robust tempi, and the orchestra is quick to respond to all the refinements of the tightly knit movement. It appears to cope effortlessly with the extremes of contrast and manages to amalgamate the rhythmic excesses with the tenderness of the numerous tiny motifs and figures which seem to sprout like flowers out of hard rock. The excellent recording technique captures both the extreme loudness and the finely pulsating tones, resulting in a sound in which no detail goes unheard. The listener can be sure that this Stravinsky deserves the rating 'excellent' - both for the interpretation and for the sound.

About Speakers Corner
At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.
During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.
A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.
We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.
We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.
To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.1. The Rite Of Spring Part I
