    Lovely Sort Of Death

"This album is certainly the darkest album I've ever recorded", states BLOODY HAMMERS

Death To False Metal is not a traditional collection of studio leftovers or songs from the vault, but a wholly original follow-up to Weezer's just-released Hurley. The album was created using the basic tracks of 10 previously unreleased recordings-nine never-before-heard songs plus one cover-to assemble a brand new and truly modern-sounding record. The result is an evolution for the band, a giant step forward with a nod to the past.

''These were great songs, great recordings, but for some reason they didn't make the final cut for previous records,'' Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo stated. ''Some just weren't right for the albums we were recording at the time-just a bit ahead of their time or too 'rock.' Now, the time is right to introduce them. Together, they are the album that should logically follow Hurley.''

Featuring tracks the band originally began recording from the late '90s to late '00s, Death To False Metal was a labor of love for Cuomo and his co-producer Shawn Everett, as well as the entire band. Each track was individually evaluated by the production team of Cuomo and Everett to figure out how to make each of the songs reach their full potential, and ultimately fit harmoniously on the album. After that process, they then brought in each band member in to complete the parts needed. Some of the ten songs received a major overhaul, while others got the equivalent of a sonic tune-up.

''Turning Up The Radio'' is the result of Cuomo's 2008 collaborative YouTube project, ''Let's Write A Sawng,'' for which he invited fans to submit ideas. As they went through the steps of composing a tune, eventually, 15 people became involved. This track is one of only two songs not solely penned by Weezer for Death To False Metal.

''Blowin' My Stack,'' ''Losing My Mind'' (which features some of the most raw and personal emotions in a Weezer song), ''I'm A Robot,'' and a rock cover of the massive R&B hit ''Un-Break My Heart'' were all first recorded prior to the release of 2005's Make Believe. ''I Don't Want Your Loving'' was originally laid down as a demo for 2002's Maladroit. The abrasive punk-metal ''Everyone'' hails from post-1998 Pinkerton period, as does the pop song ''Trampoline.'' The piano-based ''Odd Couple'' and new-wave-style ''Auto-Pilot'' were laid down prior to 2008's Weezer (aka ''The Red Album'').

The title Death To False Metal comes from a phrase that Cuomo and his younger brother used when they were kids. Musical integrity was a matter of life or death then, and now the new album is a reminder of how important music is for both Weezer and their many fans. At a time when many of their contemporaries seem to have forgotten how to rock, Weezer is ready to teach them. Cuomo and fellow axe-slinger Brian Bell crafted nine epic guitar solos-one for nearly every song on Death To False Metal-and with the band's signature hooks in full effect, Weezer's school of rock is back in session.

    Death Peak

Clark returns this spring with Death Peak. The album deftly weaves together the various threads of his extensive work, intertwining euphoric melodies and visceral rhythms of warehouse rave with newer vocal and choral elements.

Death Peak exposes the tension in Clark's musical vocabulary I love finding the fulcrum between opposites - I want my tracks to have sharp teeth, but you want to stroke them too. They sound ancient, but beamed in from the future, soft, corrosive. Album track 'Peak Magnetic' is a club-ready 4 am affair - vigorous, singular, hard to define. As Clark explains I wanted the kick to sound like some massive natural event, barely controlled, a boulder bouncing down a hill with birds tweeting around it. A complete mudball of a pulse that anchors everything to it through sheer mass. It makes me think of outdoor springtime raving. 'Catastrophe Anthem' features the voices of a children's choir eerily chanting the mantra, We are your ancestors. Clark has rarely used vocals before, but here every song has an element of human voice. Nearly all the tracks have some form of vocal recording on them. I only realized this late in the recording process. I get hypnotized by the human voice - the most perfect synth. Vocals can be a bit of an awkward hat, that producers wear to try and get attention. Death Peak voices are the opposite of that. The vocal elements are just another instrument in the mix. It's taken me awhile to get to this level of confidence with it.

Recently he released a split 12-inch with label mates Mark Pritchard & Bibio and worked remixes with the likes of Nils Frahm and Max Richter. Significantly, Clark has turned his hand to scoring. He released the foreboding cinematic soundtrack to the 2016 BAFTA nominated Sky Atlantic series 'The Last Panthers' and composed a score for Macbeth at the Young Vic theatre. Late in 2016 he composed 'Enter The Void' for especially The Echo Society orchestra, conducted by Joe Trapanese (M83 & Daft Punk collaborator) and performed at the historic Ace Theatre, LA. Clark signed to Warp in his late-teens. His studio sound has evolved and matured over two decades; although he would say he's only just starting. His amorphous industrial noise has ever-grown and influenced producers, dancefloors and festivals around the world.

A Walk With Love And Death

The Melvins have announced their first double album, A Walk With Love and Death, set for release via Ipecac Recordings. The dual albums find the trio of Buzz Osborne, Dale Crover, and Steve McDonald showcasing two distinct sides to the band's music: Death, a proper Melvins' release, and Love, the score to the Jesse Nieminen directed, self-produced short also titled A Walk With Love and Death.

"This was a huge undertaking," explained band ringleader Buzz Osborne. "All three things: the album, the soundtrack, and the film are benchmarks for us."

Drummer Dale Crover added, "A Walk With Love and Death is one giant, dark, moody, psychotic head trip! Not for the faint of heart. You'll sleep with the lights on after listening."

The albums, which include guests Joey Santiago (The Pixies), Teri Gender Bender (Le Butcherettes/Crystal Fairy) and Anna Waronker (That Dog), were self-produced with engineer Toshi Kosai.

Me And That Man will release its debut album Songs Of Love And Death on March 24 through Cooking Vinyl. The duo is fronted by Behemoth founder, songwriter/singer Nergal . The album puts away any pre-conceived ideas about what heavy music 'should' be, with the release of this side project. The duo draws heavily on blues, country and folk to make music as dark as if it was being screamed over shredding guitars. Me And That Man pairs Nergal with British/Polish rock musician John Porter.

Fans of everything from Nick Cave, Danzig, Leonard Cohen, and Johnny Cash's American Recordings, through to the grim, frontier polemic of Wovenhand will find countless mesmerizing moments on the album.

    We Fight Til Death

This year Windsor for the Derby celebrates its tenth year with the release of its fifth full length, We Fight Til Death. Over those ten years Dan Matz and Jason Mcneely, have managed to arduously maintain this project over the many miles though are now newly relocated together in the city of brotherly love, Philadelphia PA. Those years have seen personnel changes with much help along the way by their talented friends. Over the last few years, Timothy White and Ben Cissner have jumped on board to lend their invaluable assistance to WFTD and helped to create a solid quartet.

We Fight Til Death finds WFTD in Bloomington, Indiana with Dan Burton (Early Day Miners, Ativin) at the controls. This record was recorded and mixed over the last year at Burton's Grotto Home Studio with Burton and a few other locals sitting in. WFTD finds a way to take each release to a wholly different trajectory while at the same time creating a progressive connection to the last. The skewed pop sensibilities of The Emotional Rescue LP are hinted at on We Fight Til Death as well as the dark refrains of 1998's Minnie Greutzfeldt. By combining elements of previous releases and exploring new terrain, We Fight Til Death is Windsor For The Derby's most realized release to date.

Along with their duties with WFTD, Dan Matz currently records solo material under his own name and The Birdwatcher.

    Live After Death

BMG and INgrooves Music Group will follow the 2012/13 IRON MAIDEN vinyl picture disc reissues of the first eight Iron Maiden albums, which spanned the 1980s, with brand new pressings of the albums in heavyweight 180g black vinyl in the United States.

The albums will be cut from the original UK analogue master tapes and packaged in identical artwork to the initial 1980's releases.

The release of these high quality, black vinyl records offers optimum choice to fans who would like to own a piece of Maiden's authentic 1980's vinyl sound, or for those simply wanting to rediscover this much loved, iconic format. Coupled with the end of the Maiden England World Tour which began in North America in 2012 and finished last month at Knebworth Park's Sonisphere Festival in the UK, this now completes Maiden's 1980's touring and catalogue reissues cycle, so the band are free to focus on their dynamic future plans.

    Little Death Shaker

Stripped of all noise influences and focusing on straight-up songs, Little Death Shaker is a record evocative of late nights and dusty parking lots, long drives and boozy hookups. This is the work of a dude who's spent his youth and young manhood on tour and it comes through in both the music and the lyrics. Where Castanets' lyrics gave us Ray Carver-ian fragments and it's-what-you-leave-out-that-counts minimalism, here we see Raposa back from the battleground with stories to tell.

This is the most lyric-heavy Raposa's been and it's also the most playful and humorous, and you get the feeling some of these songs would be the ones that would go down best near 2am at some weird sports bar dive in southeast Alabama/Iowa/Mississippi. (We can just see some big biker dude/fallen NASCAR star/Gary Busey lookalike sitting back-to-bar, Bud in hand, having a good-natured laugh over the punchline from Some of My Friends or the WTF premise of the Dan Reeder penned You'll Never Surf Again.)

The record begins with fighting spirit. Allegiance comes on with a punch of electric guitar and Raposa singing I woke up feeling/bold as shit. It's his rowdiest and most confident song to date, a real knockabout that'll take you by surprise if you're used to Castanets. Up next the title track verges on Queen (Flash Gordon soundtrack?) and Some of My Friends is a barnburner with the ghosts old Sun Studios players holding court.

Highlights are many. The dark-as-Skoal interstate roller Whippoorwill, the slowly ramping Some Kind of Fool, which rolls easy and pretty with backup vocals from Matthew Houck of Phosphorescent before building to a shitkicking rock 'n' roll peak where we find Raposa delivering some of his best and most racy lyrics, singing the very un-indie-rock, I could spend this good money wherever I care to/taste all the honies that I choose /lay myself down beside anyone's flower/all alive in the morning with the dew. It's a song about libertine freedom and heartbreak ignored and taking the bull by the horns and being, well, kind of a bastard.

More highlights: Castanets collaborator Talia Gordon taking main vocals on You're Not Standing Like You Used To (Kate Wolf); the after-afterhours minor chord jam Stateline, Little Death Shaker's most ruckus track of all, a late-night spent trapped in the stripclub/rig cab/country bar/tour van/your own damn head. At 10 minutes it's a tale of drugs and wayward love, a real red-lit kind of aloneness, backed by a legit live crawl, with high and ghostly organ and distorted vocals crackling like a bad CB connection.

With Meridian, Raposa and Houck bring back the vibe of Some Kind of Fool and take it on a humid trip through the deepest South, gators in the water, snakes in the sand, a stormhead looming over the sun-dappled river. When Raposa sings oh honey here comes the storm you can just FEEL the weather breaking.

One of this record's real charms is you can close your eyes and see these 13 tracks played live; you can see the drummer leaning over his kit with his brushes (and sunglasses on?), the backup singers standing around the mic, beers in hand, eyes closed, swaying side to side, the lights crisscrossing the stage. Meridian is no different. You can see this band. You can see these people playing together, and in a world of records that bands can't duplicate live, it's crazy-refreshing!

The album's closer, Allegiance 2, brings backlongtime Castanets collaborator Bridgit Jacobsen (nÉe Decook) for a hushed and barely-there apology. Oh lord be kind to me/after all these devils I have kissed. As a prayer, a shrug, and an exhausted offering, it's a fitting way to end an album so concerned with sin and vice. It's also a fitting end-introduction to this new band. So meet Raymond Byron and the White Freighters and their record Little Death Shaker. Here's to the new!

Ode to Dawn Wiener: Embarrassing Love Songs

2013 Cult-Classic Album Available For The First Time On Vinyl

Nicole Dollanganger has been quietly crafting her own world since 2012. Over a number of self-released
albums recorded mostly in her own bedroom and bathroom, her signature style of gothic folk is inspired by
countless influences, none more than the archetype of the love song. Dollanganger's signature lyricism is
front-and-center - usually accompanied by barely more than a few lonesome chords, narratives are idyllic,
yet haunting - dream-like, yet startlingly real.

Run For Cover Records will be reissuing two early-yet-masterful pieces of Nicole Dollanganger's
catalog on vinyl: 2013's Ode To Dawn Wiener: Embarrassing Love Songs & 2014's Observatory
Mansions. The thesis of "Ode to Dawn Wiener" is as straightforward as its subtitle, but over ten songs
it becomes clear that there is much more to these songs than what they offer at the surface. "Observatory
Mansions" shows Nicole's songwriting progressing, with reverb-soaked guitars, echoing synths & stirring
samples coming together only to intensify the pull of her stories of love, violence, sexuality and death - all
of which would be horrifying if they weren't so enchanting - a recurring yet poetic tension in Nicole Dollanganger's
    world.

Our Love To Admire (10th Anniversary)

    10 Year Anniversary Double LP

    Remastered By Gavin Lurssen

In the late 90s, Interpol emerged as one of the American indie-rock scene's most exciting and inventive new bands. The New York outfit's artfully layered sound drew comparisons to a multitude of notable post-punk combos, but Interpol's cutting-edge sound was wholly its own. That's the case with 2007's Our Love to Admire, the band's third album as well as its first major-label release and one of the group's biggest selling albums.

With the full participation of the band members, to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Our Love to Admire, UMe will release a special expanded-edition reissue of this beloved classic: a double LP. The LP will debut a sparkling new edition of the original album, remastered for this release by Gavin Lurssen with all of its original packaging intact.

Interpol formed in the late 1990s and quickly established a dense, intoxicating sound featuring layers of guitar, bass and synthesizers. The band came up through the vibrant New York scene, alongside such notable contemporaries as the Strokes and the National, but gained crucial early attention in Britain, where they recorded a prestigious live session for legendary BBC DJ John Peel.

Our Love to Admire marked a critical and commercial breakthrough for the band. Recorded at New York's Electric Lady and the Magic Shop studios with producer Rich Costey (Muse, Death Cab for Cutie), the album boasts an expansive, cinematic sound that drove home such notable songs as The Heinrich Maneuver, Pioneer to the Falls, No I In Threesome, Mammoth and Rest My Chemistry.

Upon its release, Our Love to Admire debuted in the Top Five in both the U.S. and the U.K. Uncut described the album as a majestic, grandiose, machine-tooled album, subtly orchestrated with gothic pianos and doomy organs. Billboard noted that the band retains its flair for dramatic images and ominous guitar lines... with producer/mixer Rich Costey onboard, these signatures uncoil into more complex soundscapes.

In the years since its original release, Our Love to Admire has remained a cornerstone of Interpol's body of work, and continues to stand as one of the key albums of the musical era in which it was created. Now, with this distinctive 10th-anniversary edition, this modern classic shines more brightly than ever.

The bonus DVD captures the band's 12-song performance at the London Astoria on July 2, 2007, marking the first time that these performances will be available in the U.S. The DVD includes live versions of several songs from Our Love to Admire, along with such earlier Interpol favorites as Narc, Obstacle 1, Public Pervert, Evil and NYC.

In ten short years, John Vanderslice's musical legacy already leaves listeners with seven critically-acclaimed and carefully crafted albums. JV's meticulous consideration to color, warmth, and depth of sound (his all-analog recording studio, Tiny Telephone, contributing additionally as an instrument) as well as his sophisticated narrative lyrical content have secured his place in the canon of great American songwriters. As much as JV's albums are for those who love great melodies and words into which to sink their teeth, they are also for audiophiles.

Subhumans and DOA were the two pillars of the Vancouver, BC, Canada punk scene who caught Jello Biafra's attention and were spotlighted in the landmark Alternative Tentacles compilation Let Them Eat Jellybeans. The Subhumans, first active between 1978 and 1982, were the more elusive of the two, with many out-of-print releases fetching bank on eBay and making it difficult for present-day fans to connect the dots.

Now, the Subhumans join the Alternative Tentacles Re-issues of Necessity pantheon with Death Was Too Kind, a collection of material from the early years, lovingly remastered from original source material: the very first single Death to the Sickoids (only 500 were pressed); the Firing Squad single; the self-titled EP produced by Bob Rock, who went on to work with Metallica, The Cult, Offspring, etc.; Look at the Dawn and Pissed Off... With Good Reason, two virtually lost songs (only available on the 1996 collection CD released by Essential Noise in Canada), especially remastered for this reissue from the original tapes by Jesse Gander at Hive Studios.

Death Was Too Kind features the band's best-known lineup with Wimpy Roy, Gerry Useless, Mike Graham, Dimwit, and Jim Imagawa. Both the LP & the CD come with liner notes!

    No Love Deep Web

Death Grips shocked the world and their record label when they released their second release of the year No Love Deep Web, but upon listening it's pretty clear that this is a mixtape that the label had no intention of releasing. No Love Deep Web was probably just an elaborate way to hype up the band, and it's safe to say it worked. No Love Deep Web had over 34.2 million downloads on BitTorrent thanks to the help of Twitter, and I think its safe to say their plan worked. Speaking of the album itself, it employs very minimalistic stripped down beats and has a much chiller vibe overall compared to the previous two records. That doesn't mean the beats are soft though, because they are harder than the phallus on the album cover. No Love Deep Web is one big grimy middle finger to the music industry and one of the most sordid albums ever released by a group on a major label.

This isn't your father's hip hop, but that should be common knowledge by now. If you go into this expecting insightful lyrics and smooth flow over catchy beats you're going to have a bad time, hell even if you expect to understand the lyrics most of the time you're going to get very little out of No Love Deep Web. MC Ride is his schizophrenic self on tracks like No Love and World Of Dogs, but he also comes down to earth and actually calms down a bit on tracks like Artificial Death In The West adding a lot more depth to their sound. The whole album feels like the fever dreams of a severely withdrawn drug addict, tracks like World Of Dogs, No Love and Hunger Games sound like a sick drug addicts crash back down to earth and their gritty existence. The line I got some *** to say just for the *** of it perfectly encapsulates not only MC Ride's style, but No Love Deep Web, and Death Grips' whole career.

The beats on this thing are raw and stripped down, some of the tracks don't even have a melody some of the time, just drums and vocals like in Lock Your Doors. The beats are fidgety electronic bells and whistles, lots of interesting sounds and synths creating a gritty atmosphere for MC Ride to spit his insane lyrics over. The rawness and harsh production of the beats help point to the fact that this is a mixtape and not a studio release, the minimalistic approach also creates a fresh sound compared to the over produced and at times gimmicky production on The Money Store, and this approach will likely convert a few people who were not fond of the over the top nature of The Money Store.

No Love Deep Web inevitably sounds a tad rushed, no *** it was made in only a few months, but it definitely did its job as a hype generator. It doesn't do enough different to warrant its early release date and the band's sound is getting a bit tiring. The main problem though is the lack of standout tracks, with most of the hooks gone and with such stripped down beats a lot of the songs blend together in an unflattering way. Exhausting as it can be at times, No Love Deep Web turned out to be another great addition to Death Grips' ever expanding discography that is likely to turn a few heads just as all of their previous work has done.

Stone Jack Jones is a survivor. On two separate occasions the rare and mysterious blood
condition that courses through his steely West Virginian veins almost killed him. Doctors couldn't
fully explain or treat his malady, but Jack pulled through, even after receiving last rites on one
occasion. Spending a little time at Death's door gave him unique perspective on life. While
recovering from one of his near death experiences he deeply pondered the necessity of death,
the torturous pain that comes with the death of someone you love, and eventually arrived at the
simultaneously comforting and alarming conclusion that he was both alive and dead at the same
    time.

In 2014 Jack released Ancestor, an album which The Quietus called " breathtakingly insightful
and poetic ", and SPIN called undeniably compelling ". As a tribute to his father, Ancestor
was a remembrance of mountain string bands, with many of the songs worked out as an acoustic
three-piece sitting together in a bluegrass circle. For his new album Love & Torture he took a
different approach, working out the foundations for most of the songs in the studio with producer
Roger Moutenot. Rather than recording everything over of a few days or weeks in the studio, the
two met up sporadically over the course of many months, giving the songs plenty of time to
gestate and evolve in stride with Jack's life. When it felt right, they'd invite long-time collaborators
including Ryan Norris, Scott Martin, and Kyle Hamlett into the studio to improvise and explore
where each song would go next. Having worked and created with the same guys for several years,
their trust and intimacy let them extract moments of brilliance from the ether.

The album opens with the woozy groove of Shine (one of two songs on the album featuring
vocals by Patty Griffin), which Jack describes as a contemplation of what heaven might be like.
The following song Thrill Thrill explores the helplessness he felt in the clutches of the blood
disease that nearly killed him. Lambchop's Kurt Wagner contributes some serious low-end to the
song Circumstance. As Jack recalls, I asked Kurt if he thought he could sing lower than me and
he gave me a wily smile with a deep long ooooh yeah, took a sip of whiskey and put it in the
basement. The mood lightens a bit on the drinking song Russia on which Jack's wife Hollis
chants verses from Russian poet Alexander Blok, while Ben Smythe contributes a frenetic and
deranged penny whistle to the party. The album concludes with the joyful acceptance and
appreciation of Amen, another song about Jack's celebration of life. As dark as his creative
output can seem at times, it's heavily infused with Jack's undeniable light and his patient will to
...knock a hole in the sky. Seek light in the dark. Have secrets and make the air vibrate and
shake reality so she shows her many faces. Like a collection of swirling and inviting mantras
Love & Torture is a sonic dialog that pulses with the all of the grace and bliss that has touched
    Jack's incredible life.

    The Hazards of Love

The Hazards of Love is the follow-up to the The Decemberists 2006 breakthrough, The Crane Wife, voted favorite album of the year by NPR listeners. With their fifth full-length album, the Portland-based quintet of Colin Meloy, Chris Funk, Jenny Conlee, Nate Query and John Moen solidifies its standing as one of the most innovative creative forces in music today. In an age when singles rule and the death of the album has been pronounced by many, The Decemberists have fashioned an anomaly: a record that demands to be listened to from start to finish and reveals more with each subsequent play. The 17-song suite, recorded with the bands longtime producer, Tucker Martine, is rooted in ancient language and imagery, yet entirely modern and accessible. The Hazards of Love tells the tale of a woman named Margaret who is ravaged by a shape-shifting animal; her lover, William; a forest queen; and a cold-blooded, lascivious rake. Lavender Diamonds Becky Stark and My Brightest Diamonds Shara Worden deliver the lead vocals for the female characters, while My Morning Jackets Jim James, Robyn Hitchcock, and the Spinanes Rebecca Gates appear in supporting roles.

Reports From The Threshold Of Death (Awaiting Repress)

With their last album, The Martyrdom of a Catastrophist, Junius explored the controversial theories of scholar Immanuel Velikovsky. The concept was centered around the trials and tribulations of Velikovskys life, providing a captivating narrative to the bands expansive, dreamlike soundtrack, which Pitchfork called a rich, immersive experience, a bleak jewel of a record that takes obsession as its theme and rewards it in equal measure.

Conceptually picking up where The Martyrdom left off (with the death of Velikovsky), Reports from the Threshold of Death chronicles the journey of the soul after the body dies. In writing this album, vocalist/guitarist Joseph Martinez was inspired by reports and accounts of near-death experiences. On the albums ten beautifully cathartic tracks, the band takes listeners on a journey into the unknown, channeling basic human themes like love, regret, and longing. Massive walls of guitars drive with steadfast rhythm beneath soaring synth and vocal melodies throughout the albums arc, providing a passionate soundtrack for the journey into the light.

Reports from the Threshold of Death was the first album to be recorded at Will Benoits Radar Studios in Clinton, CT (the first fully solar-powered sustainable studio on the East Coast) with longtime friend/producer James Dunham of rock-noir band InAeona. The recording was in many ways a return to Junius roots, with engineering assistance from past collaborators Benoit and Daryl Rabidoux, mastering by Nick Zampiello and Rob Gonnella (Isis, Converge, Torche, Doomriders), and art designed by former Junius bassist Ira Bronson (of Black Day Creative).

The Book Of Love tells the story of an introverted architect named Henry. After the death of his wife in a car accident, he sets out to help Millie, a homeless teen, to build a raft to sail across the Atlantic.

Justin Timberlake, the multi-platinum pop star, actor and owner of handfuls of Grammys and Emmys, composed the orchestral film together with Mitchell Owens.

Justin has always been intrigued by movie scores; "I think when I was a kid I would hear movies more than I would watch them. I saw 'E.T.' at a drive-in with my father, and hearing that main theme to the movie, and how it's used when the bikes take off and they fly over the police barricade, and you hear that sweeping melody - I'll never forget that moment."

His debut composition is nothing but amazing. Justin takes you on a minimalistic reflective trip. The score is emotionally driven and shows pure honesty, which is the most supreme form in which an artist can express himself.

    Love From With The Dead

With the Dead - Love From With the Dead

Doom is all around us. The optimism of a new millennium has steadily disintegrated. The light at the end of the tunnel turned out to be a burning tower block and the powers-that-be are dancing in the smouldering ruins. Humanity is eating itself and we're all terminally fucked. As a result, it makes perfect sense that the emergence of British doom metal mavens With The Dead would strike a dissonant chord with so many people. Formed in 2014 by former Cathedral/Napalm Death frontman and Rise Above Records boss Lee Dorrian and ex-Electric Wizard/Ramesses bassisit/guitarist Tim Bagshaw, the band coalesced in a monetary burst of spontaneity and shared fury, resulting in the release of their eponymous debut album in 2015: one of that year's most widely acclaimed releases and a welcome shot in the arm for fans of merciless, unrelenting sonic despair.

"We were very happy with the way the first album was received," says Lee. "To be honest, there were no real expectations with the first LP. It's hard to explain. We just got together and did it. There was no big anticipation. We knew it was going to be well received by certain people, just because of the sheer heaviness of it, but we didn't think it would get the reaction it did. It sold really well and got a good response all around. It came together so strangely and so fast. We hadn't gone round, sweating in the clubs, although we've all done that previously. The record came out on Rise Above so it was easy and there were no demands from anyone except ourselves. The important thing is, we didn't want it to be seen as some novelty project band."

Hell-bent on staking a further claim to be doom metal's most intense and remorseless practitioners, With The Dead have now completed work on their second album, Love From With The Dead. Comprising tracks recorded during two separate sessions with celebrated studio guru Jaime Gomez Arellano, the new material represents the first fruits of the band's recently retooled line-up. Joining Lee and Tim are bassist Leo Smee and drummer Alex Thomas, who replaces the departed Mark Greening. As Lee explains, the band's new incarnation generated great chemistry from the start.

"Tim came over from New Jersey, where he still lives, and we booked four nights' rehearsals with Leo and Alex to see how it was going to work. Literally, on the first night, they had the whole set nailed within three or four hours. It sounded better than ever before, too. So the next three nights were pointless and we didn't need them, so we spent the time going over ideas for new songs and by the end we had four brand new songs. It was crazy. Then we thought 'While Tim's over, let's go in the studio and record them ' Luckily, Gomez was free and we went over to his studio and recorded the four new tracks, they're the last four on the album, and it was all done just like that. The other three tracks were recorded nearly a year later, again with just one night's rehearsal. It was all done super quick."

For those who flinched at the sheer, unforgiving brutality of With The Dead's first record, the songs on Love From With The Dead are liable to cause major emotional trauma. Darker, denser, more despondent and sickeningly heavy in numerous senses of the word, this is an album that re-establishes doom as a genre that embraces the extreme and not just some cosy, nostalgic reimagining of the early '70s. From opener Isolation's slithering howl of torment and the crushing, schizophrenic barrage of Egyptian Tomb through to the expansive, drone-driven horrors of the closing CV1 (a mournful lament to Lee Dorrian's home city of Coventry that features a guest appearance by home-town comrade and electro-noise maverick Russell Haswell), Love From With The Dead grimly extinguishes the light of hope and hammers home the hatred and futility that plagues our brief and brittle lives.

"The thinking was that the first LP was meant to be the heaviest we could possibly make, but then what do you next?" Lee muses. "Well, the only thing you can do is make the next one even heavier. So that was the ambition and the intention, to make it even more crushing. But to be able to do that you have to be crushed yourself. This last couple of years have been quite soul-destroying. There's been a lot of personal shit going on, and during this whole process so much fucking bad shit has happened in my personal life and other people's personal lives. Everything you hear on this LP, the angst is very real. I've never felt so disillusioned with life and the world around me, not since the first Cathedral album!"

Irrefutable evidence that With The Dead are a formidable and substantial proposition, the quartet's second album could hardly provide a more apposite soundtrack to the deeply fucked up and irrevocably dysfunctional state of the world in 2017. Both a fine example of the simple, savage power of the riff and an authentic outpouring of anger, bitterness, bile and vivid existential dread, it is the living, breathing, screaming embodiment of heaviness itself. Cometh the hour, cometh the bringers of doom

"I'm 50 next year and you're supposed to mellow out when you get older, but why?" Lee asks. "I don't feel like mellowing out. The world's getting worse, the atmosphere is getting heavier, people treat each other like shit and there's so much negativity, how are you supposed to chill out when all that's going on? I'm in a privileged position to be able to be in a band like this, so why fuck around? The band's called With The Dead and it's a doom band, why would you want to mellow out? It's got to be pure nihilism or nothing."
