Escape From EvilOn Escape From Evil, Lower Dens' Jana Hunter emerges: cerebral and hot-blooded, rash and
incorruptible, and, crucially, possessing of a loud, clear voice.
Hunter stepping up and taking center stage has emboldened every other aspect of the band.
Escape From Evil is a cinematic, tonally rich work. The sounds are clean and warm. The pulse of
the album is strong. Melodies are potent and songs are physical. Lyrics are direct, frank
confrontations with life's common crises. The album title is brazen, and along with the grimly
funny title of lead single, To Die in L.A., almost theatrical.1. Sucker's Shangri-La

Twin-Hand MovementTwin-Hand Movement is Lower Dens' brilliant 2010 debut album! It is eleven perfect songs long. Filled with swarming guitar fuzz, bass waves, insistent drum throbs and Jana Hunter's charred voice. The album truly reflects the musicians and the city they call home, Baltimore, to the core: survivalist paranoia and rolling waves of droning rhythm crafted together methodically and beautifully into proud, catchy, weirdo anthems.1. FreecloudsCarter Tanton (formerly known as Tulsa and current member of Lower Dens) has announced a national tour with The War on Drugs and Purling Hiss behind his forthcoming full-length, Freeclouds. The album features the enchanting vocals of Boston dream-folk artist Marissa Nadler. They're FlowersLuxury Liners is the new solo project of Carter Tanton. The first single, "Caribbean Sunset," has received praise from Spin for its "synth-built bliss." With lyrics adapted from John Cale's composition and a completely unique melody, the song is a perfect introduction to the warm, summery album. They're Flowers retains a twinkling pop sound filtered through electronic hooks, rich with drum programming and sampling, as Tanton wrote the album primarily on a laptop while on tour with The War On Drugs and his previous band, Lower Dens. A marked distinction from Tanton's previous work, They're Flowers embraces the pop aesthetic while veering into blissful electronic.1. Caribbean Sunset

Parting GlancesIn 2010 Nicole Schneit aka Air Waves released Dungeon Dots, an album Aquarius Records called pretty much perfect pop music. For her new album Parting Glances, Schneit enlisted friends from Brooklyn's music community to contribute to the record, including members of Woods, Crystal Stilts, Ava Luna, and Hospitality. Additionally, Jana Hunter of Lower Dens contributes vocals to two songs. The album's title comes from the 1986 film Parting Glances in which Steve Buscemi portrays a gay man navigating the difficulties of being in a relationship in Reagan-era New York. More than just identifying with the story, Schneit is interested in the in the lasting effect of the parting glances we share with strangers in our everyday encounters. She explains You see all sorts of physical and emotional traits on the train. From people puking, making out, screaming, crying, laughing, dancing, grooming, etc. We encounter each other in the thick of our complex lives by simply looking at each other all the time. These glances are mundane and fleeting but also powerfully intimate. The lingering impact of those brief moments seeps into the details and imagery she delivers with energizing hooks and a disarming lack of pretense on Parting Glances.1. Horse Race

"It's a punk rock rush, a fundamentally teenage blast
of endorphins that, if you're wired a certain way,
you can't help but feel every time their guitars lock
into a riff and the drums get rolling. Even when it's
complicated, it's simple."
- Stereogum, "Behind the Scenes
of Fucked Up's Fourth Album"
On their fourth album Toronto's Fucked Up pare things
back to a single LP. In contrast to the sprawling epic
of their last album, the punk rock opera David Comes
To Life, the new album returns to rock'n'roll basics,
verse-chorus-verse-chorus. It also features guitar
solos, mellotron and piano.
Recorded for the first time in analogue, with Bill
Skibbe (The Dead Weather, The Kills, Lower Dens,
Andre Williams), the album is bathed in a warm,
almost romantic glow. In particular, Jonah Falco's
virtuosic drumming shines forth, each snare hit
shattering the air. Damian Abraham's throaty growl is
not less punk, but the overall effect is a more human,
relatable Fucked Up.
While the imagery still includes the usual high-concept refrences (not least to classical mythology),
Abraham and Mike Haliechuk's lyrics mostly address
the puzzle of being in a punk rock band while having
children and being in their early 30s. "So this is what
it'd be like? Everything bathed in a harsh bright light?
Why is the impact so immense? Maybe I know it
could have been me instead."

Natural MotionOther Colors is an exploratory pop group from Baltimore comprised of longtime collaborators William Ryerson and Daniel Whatley, with a rotating cast of characters.
A historic blizzard in Baltimore back in 2010 played prominently in the early history of the band. With the city shut down for almost two weeks, Ryerson took the opportunity to write a droney, catchy set of songs on a broken electric guitar, layering sounds overtop on an old four-track. The results, captured on a self-titled EP released a year later, set a course for the group's future pop ambitions: a skewed, lo-fi miniature of greater things to come.
Their proper debut album, Free Thoughts, was recorded in 2012 by Dan Frome (Big Ups, Expert Alterations). A more polished and recognizably rock affair, it features contributions from notable musicians including Jenn Wasner (Wye Oak) and Dave Jacober (Dope Body). Released on their own Genpop imprint in early 2013, the album incorporates introspective folk-rock moods and atmospheric production into a set of memorable songs. To follow up, they recorded a two-song seven-inch with Chester Endersby Gwazda (Future Islands, Dan Deacon) that more accurately captured the band's dreamy live sound.
The band is now preparing to release their second album Natural Motion, recorded and mixed throughout 2015 at Beat Babies by Chris Freeland (Lower Dens, Wye Oak). This new album draws stylistic inspiration from forgotten AM radio hits and the smoother side of krautrock, conjuring tender soft-rock vibes through the fractured lens of contemporary underground pop. Filled with imaginative arrangements and first-rate songcraft, Natural Motion is a major step forward for the group: a lush, fully realized sound experience with abundant melodic treasures waiting to be uncovered.1. ADAD-JAG-5517xSharon Van Etten
Are We ThereFor all the attention that was paid to her 2012 break-through Tramp, Sharon Van Etten is an
artist with a hunger to turn another corner and to delve deeper, writing from a place of honesty
and vulnerability to create a bond with the listener that few contemporary musicians can match.
Compelled by a restless spirit, Van Etten is continuously challenging herself. Now, the result is
Are We There, a self-produced album of exceptional intimacy, sublime generosity, and immense
Most musicians are quite happy to leave the production end of things to someone else. It's
enough to live your music without taking on the role of producer as well. Yet Van Etten knew it
was time to make a record entirely on her terms. The saying goes "fortune favors the bold" and
yet this boldness had to be tempered. For this,Van Etten found a kindred spirit in veteran music
producer Stewart Lerman. Originally working together on Boardwalk Empire, they gently moved
into new roles, rallying around the idea of making a record together in Lerman's studio in New
Jersey. Lerman's studio expertise gave Van Etten the freedom to make Are We There the way she
imagined.Van Etten also enlisted the individual talents of her band, consisting of Heather Woods
Broderick, Doug Keith and Zeke Hutchins, and brought in friends Dave Hartley and Adam
Granduciel from The War on Drugs, Jonathan Meiberg (Shearwater),Jana Hunter(Lower Dens),
Peter Broderick, Mackenzie Scott(Torres), Stuart Bogie, Jacob C. Morris and Mickey Freeze.
It is clear from the opening chords in the first song, Afraid of Nothing, that we are witnessing a
new awareness, a sign of Van Etten in full stride, writing, producing and performing from a place
that seems almost mythical, were it not so touchable and real. Always direct, and never shying
away even from the most personally painful narratives, Van Etten's songwriting continues to
evolve. Many of the songs deal with seemingly impossible decisions, anticipation, and then
resolution. She sings of the nature of desire, memory, of being lost, emptiness, of promises and
loyalty, fear and change, of healing and the true self, violence and sanctuary, waiting, of silence.
The artist who speaks in such a voice is urging us to do something,to take hold and to go deeper.
Living in this way,the questions of life remain alive, as close and steady as breathing. Many of the
ballads of old are as dark as pitch, and people for whom the issues of life and death were as vivid
as flame wrote them. You could turn off the electricity, remove all the instruments and Sharon's
voice and words would remain. They connect her to the mystic stratum which flows just beneath
the everyday, which is rarely acknowledged as the forces of distraction sweep our attention away.1. Afraid of Nothing
