In 1992, Dean Wareham followed the posthumous buzz of Galaxie 500 by forming a new band: Luna. Initially joined by Justin Harwood (of the Chills) and Stanley Demeski (of the Feelies), the group went on to sign to Warner Brothers sub-label Elektra, tour with the Velvet Underground, collaborate with Tom Verlaine and Sterling Morrison and ultimately release five stunning albums over the course of the 90s.
Deemed "the best band you've never heard of" by Rolling Stone, Luna remained under the radar for most of their career despite gathering a rabid cult following. It's not hard to see why this is the case, as the three albums featuring the original lineup (plus guitarist Sean Eden on the latter two) act as a perfect synthesis of the members past bands, blending the simplicity of Galaxie, the heavenly pop melodies of the Chills and the quick and intensely precise drumming of the Feelies into one fluid package. This is particularly evident on 1995's fan-favorite Penthouse, in which the band created a masterpiece of lush, late night music that's now considered one of the best of the 90s.
Following Penthouse, the band saw the replacement of Stanley with Lee Wall on drums but no slump in quality. The psychedelic textures of 1997's Pup Tent and the clean and beautiful pop of 1999's Days of Our Nights proved that Luna was a consistently reliable band and not one that would wane with age. Elektra didn't feel the same way, though, and eventually decided not to release Days of Our Nights after paying for the recording.
This box set gathers together those five albums from the 90s as well as a compilation of demos and B-sides recorded contemporaneously, all housed in a beautiful textured canvas box. Accompanying the records is a 12" x 12" book featuring archival imagery, an interview with Dean Wareham conducted by Noah Baumbach and an oral history with the band and their producers. As the majority of these records were never released on vinyl outside of limited pressings, this is a boon to longtime fans and new listeners alike.LP 1: Lunapark (1992)

Primitive And Deadly
Contains Vinyl Only Exclusive Track: Badgers Bane
This deluxe vinyl version of the new Earth studio opus comes in a thick Stoughton old style tip-on jacket with a soft-touch UV varnish.
Primitive And Deadly, is EARTH's tenth studio collection. Dylan Carlson and long term cohort, drummer Adrienne Davies, manage to pull off the trick of completing an Ouroborean creative cycle, twenty-five years in the making, whilst exploring new directions in their music. For the first time in their diverse second act, they allow themselves to be a rock band, freed of adornment and embellishment. As much as Carlson's guitar has always been the focal point of EARTH's music, it's been surrounded by consistently diverse instrumentation. Here the dialog between Carlson and Davies drumming remains pivotal, underpinned by the sympathetic bass of Bill Herzog (Sunn O))), Joel RL Phelps, Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter) and thickened by additional layers of guitar from Brett Netson (Built To Spill, Caustic Resin) and Jodie Cox (Narrows). Perhaps the largest left turn on Primitive And Deadly, though, is prominence of guest vocalists Mark Lanegan and Rabia Shaheen Qazi (Rose Windows) who transform the traditionally free ranging meditations of EARTH into something approaching traditional pop structures.
On Rooks Across the Gates, a song stylistically the closest to the folk inspired modality of Angels Of Darkness, Carlson stretches out into some of his most lyrical playing to date, creating an almost symbiotic relationship between his performance and the vocals of old friend Mark Lanegan. From the Zodiacal Light, meanwhile, takes the late 60s San Franciscan/freaked-out jazz-rock transcendence of The Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull and quickly re-appropriates that sound into a musky torch song for the witching hour.
This contradictive tension between a band pushing itself ever-forward whilst surveying their history is reflected in the albums twin recording locales. The foundation of the record was laid in the mystic desert high lands of Joshua Tree, California where EARTH recorded hour after hour of meditations on each tracks central theme at Rancho de la Luna. Upon returning to Seattle these were edited, arranged and expanded upon at Avast with the help of long-term collaborator Randall Dunn (who was previously at the helm for the Hex, The Bees Made Honey In The Lions Skull and Hibernaculum sessions).
Thick, dense and overdriven, melodically rich and enveloping, Primitive And Deadly is EARTH reaffirming their position as a singular point in the history of rock.

Grrr...Fronted by Justin Rice and Christian Rudder, Bishop Allen is best known for making and self-releasing an EP each month for an entire year, then reworking some of the best songs for a highly acclaimed label debut (The Broken String). The rigorous EP project, and the extensive touring that has followed it, have allowed Bishop Allen to hone their craft: writing, performing and recording music.
The resulting album, Grrr..., reveals that after five years of comparisons to other artists like Jonathan Richman, The Kinks, Bright Eyes, Spoon, etc., in rave reviews from Rolling Stone, SPIN, Entertainment Weekly and many others, Bishop Allen has developed an artistry and sound that are unmistakably their own. One thing that distinguishes Bishop AllenÆs music is the quality of the writing. RiceÆs literate lyrics, which The Los Angeles Times has praised for their ôpoetic insight,ö have a universality that has made them resonant to listeners of all ages and earned them champions ranging from the young comic actor Michael Cera to the National Public Radio host Scott Simon.
Each of the 13 tracks comprising Grrrà is a succinct composition, and yet the album also coheres seamlessly as a song cycle. The melody and/or rhythm of one track is often contiguous with the next. As always, Rice and Rudder are responsible not only for the writing, but the lionÆs share of the playing and the recording: the guitars, pianos, marimbas, ukeleles and vocals. And, as before, Darbie Nowatka shares in the singing. Otherwise, the album features contributions from a number of their friends: drums and percussion by Michael Tapper, horns by Jon Natchez and Kelly Pratt, and strings by Daniel Hart. Bryce Goggin (Pavement, The Apples in Stereo, Luna, Sebadoh) offered the band some invaluable production tips and, at his famed Trout Recording studio in Brooklyn, recorded the drums and mixed the album.1. Cult Of LunaOriginally released in 2001, this is a highly sought after reissue of the self-titled debut album from atmospheric doom maestros Cult Of Luna. The debut record garnered critical appreciation and underground popularity for the Scandinavian 8-piece. The debut is an oddity in the discography, due to a larger hardcore punk and doom metal influence and is substantially heavier than their later material. Later releases 'Salvation' and 'Somewhere Along The Highway' are deservingly regarded as the two best albums post-metal has to offer but this debut no doubt contains some of the band's best work.LP 1

With their second album, at the turn of the millennium, SAMSAS TRAUM achieved a quantum leap, and not only in terms of production. The album, which contains among other tracks the hit single 'Thanathan und Athanasia' is much loved by fans and devotees of the band, and not just because of the outstanding sounds, for which the Nachtschicht studio (SOPOR AETERNUS, L'ÂME IMMORTELLE, JANUS) was responsible. On 'Oh Luna mein', the choruses that are typical of the band are particularly strong; male and female vocals harmonise with each other in downright cosmic equilibrium.
The insanity oozes from every note of the unmistakable melodies. Featuring artwork that underscores the music's far removal from worldly concerns, 'Oh Luna mein' is and remains a musical milestone that has had a lasting influence on an entire scene.LP 1

MarinerSince their beginnings in 1998, Cult Of Luna has released seven albums, been awarded the top rock/metal award at the Swedish National Radio Awards and cemented their status as one of the true progressors of the metal genre, known to most metal aficionados. In 2013, the Swedes teamed up with Indie Recordings for the release of perhaps their most successful work to date in the shape of "Vertikal I" and Vertikal II. These cohesive pieces of work received worldwide appraisal and only pillared Cult Of Luna to even greater heights.
For their eight effort, the post-metal pioneers join forces with the talented Julie Christmas from Brooklyn, whom bring an even larger depth to Cult Of Lunas sound. Her haunting voice has fronted vital bands such as Made Out of Babies and Battle of Mice, and is one of significance in the underground sludge and post-metal scene. Furthermore, she has released two solo albums and features on tracks by bands like Mouth of the Architect and String of Consciousness. Her prowess as a vocalist is powerfully on display on "Mariner".
At the end of Vertikal, we stood in the cold harshness of the mechanical city and looked up onto the stars. We lost ourselves in the awe of their grace and thought that "maybe the answer is to be found above. The ship was leaking and by to look of it, our home was dying. No room for fear when a greater call demands your full attention. So, we left... Onward, forward. Like the old seafarers, we explored the vastness of space. Not bound by physical laws we pass the speed of light and chase the expansion of space until we reach its limit. And then, we continued on and disappeared. This is our story. - Cult Of Luna1. Electric Balloon" a beaming mix of ice-cool vintage '80s no

- THE NEW YORKER
After years of writing and performing, Ava Luna has refined their doo-wop soul meets
punk-as-fuck aesthetic into something bold and glaringly defiant in today's indie
music landscape. Following the release of their critically lauded first proper
full-length Ice Level, the band spent an intense 2-week period writing and recording in
upstate New York. Unlike previous efforts that were meticulously mapped out, the
songs that would become Electric Balloon were a family effort. according to frontman Carlos Hernandez. For the new album, former Columbia composition student
Hernandez relinquished the reins a bit, opting for a more organic approach to writing
the material for what would become Electric Balloon. As Hernandez explains, it was a
birth of confidence. I grew closer to my bandmates, began to see the roles of a
family playing out. Ethan cooks dinner for all of us, we make lewd jokes, and then
'after-dinner storytelling' takes the form of playing music.
In the wake of Ice Level, Ava Luna's sharp edges have melted away just enough, making
it easier to connect with their no-wave grooves and soaring harmonies. Distilling
everything from James Chance and ESG to contemporaries like Dirty Projectors and Of
Montreal, Ava Luna have landed on an aggressively unique sound that still manages to
be accessible. Hernandez goes on to explain the stories and moments here are
clearer, as in a conversation. The moment appears, you grab it with your hands, screw
the lid on the mason jar. There was no tweaking, no second-guessing. Julian's mantra
for the process: 'First thought best thought.' .And for my part, I sing my best about
encounters, friendships, some moments beautiful and others painful. A bike shop

While on a writing retreat in the sleepy southern town of Benton, Mississippi, the members of New York's Ava Luna came across an abandoned house while on a walk through the woods. Overgrown, rotting, and littered with evidence of its past inhabitants, the maze-like dwelling would haunt their psyches throughout the writing and recording of their third full-length Infinite House. Like Borges' Library of Babel, the seemingly endless rooms and hallways in the old house felt like a metaphor for the invisible, internal labyrinths, which the band explores lyrically and sonically on their new album. Recorded by drummer Julian Fader and vocalist/guitar player Carlos Hernandez, and mixed by Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, Spoon, MGMT), it is safely their most polished recording to date. But their trademark intensity, mirthful humor, and angularity remain resolutely in place, the burnished surfaces illuminating the stories beneath like never before. By questioning, or maybe just forgetting the rules of the real world, on Infinite House the band has grown beyond the nervous soul descriptor they've been tagged with in the past, delivering an album on which nightmarish moments can phoenix into revelations that help us reconnect with the surreal magic in our everyday lives.1. The PhoenixOnce upon a time, CKY burned it all down, with a raucous, anarchic, hard rock sound soaked in the skate-punk culture that birthed them and a hard-partying lifestyle onstage and off that decimated relationships and reputations in its wake.
Now, CKY rises from the ashes of the aftermath with The Phoenix, a bold mission statement that hoists the flag high for big, raw, authentic, earth-shaking rock n' roll, liberated from useless pretense.
The Phoenix touches on anger, revenge, good versus evil, desperation, recovery, growth, knowledge, survival, enemies, friends, and more. There are heavy, dark, signature CKY grooves, "fun shit," "fancy shit," driving and almost danceable stuff, big melodies, total ear candy, immense diversity There are even parts that sound like maybe Quincy Jones was given the keys to Rancho De La Luna and just ran amok with the dudes in CKY.1. Elwan (Awaiting Repress)For the last five years, Tinariwen have been busy criss-crossing the globe bringing their
triumpant tours to all five continents and expanding their audience. During this time their
beloved homeland in the Adrar des Ifoghas, a Saharan mountain range that straddles the
border between north-eastern Mali and southern Algeria has, in effect, been transformed
into a conflict zone, a place where nobody can venture without putting themselves in danger.
These conflicts have forced the band into exile to record their 8th album, Elwan.
Elwan means 'the elephants ' - an animal metaphor to describe those 'beasts', whether
militias or multinational consortiums, who have trampled everything in their path: in the
desert, where both the human and ecological equilibriums are extremely fragile.
Tinariwen chose to record this album is several locations around the world, including for 4
days at the desert hideaway of Rancho De La Luna studio in Joshua Tree, CA, the studio
known as a favored refuge for many an eclectic artist from Queens of the Stone Age to
Daniel Lanios to Arctic Monkeys to Iggy Pop and more. For Tinariwen, the geographical
location of the studio proved to be particularly propitious in terms of creativity. And the
human climate was just as favorable.
A few friends dropped in during the sessions to add some magic to a few tracks including,
Kurt Vile (electric guitar), Mark Lanegan ( Vocals on 'Nànnuflày'), Matt Sweeney (electric
guitar) and producer/guitarist, Alain Johannes (Cigarbox guitar). Sessions were also
recorded in Morocco, where the band were accompanied by local musicians, in a land
where they are considered musical legends.
Lovers of those sensual yet abrasive riffs that are Tinariwen's signature won't be disappointed.
But neither will those who love their funky, danceable side, which comes through
loud and clear. All that potential has been wonderfully honed by the album's mixing engineer
Andrew Schepps, known well for his work with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Johnny
Cash, and Jay Z.1. Tiwàyyen

Parting GlancesIn 2010 Nicole Schneit aka Air Waves released Dungeon Dots, an album Aquarius Records called pretty much perfect pop music. For her new album Parting Glances, Schneit enlisted friends from Brooklyn's music community to contribute to the record, including members of Woods, Crystal Stilts, Ava Luna, and Hospitality. Additionally, Jana Hunter of Lower Dens contributes vocals to two songs. The album's title comes from the 1986 film Parting Glances in which Steve Buscemi portrays a gay man navigating the difficulties of being in a relationship in Reagan-era New York. More than just identifying with the story, Schneit is interested in the in the lasting effect of the parting glances we share with strangers in our everyday encounters. She explains You see all sorts of physical and emotional traits on the train. From people puking, making out, screaming, crying, laughing, dancing, grooming, etc. We encounter each other in the thick of our complex lives by simply looking at each other all the time. These glances are mundane and fleeting but also powerfully intimate. Vertikal I & II (Out Of Stock)After many years of intense touring the band had decided to take a break from live shows until a proper new album was ready.
In 2011 the band undertook intense writing sessions and began to record demos. The foundations of the first tracks were recorded in Umeå and an album slowly took form. The recording process was longer and more scattered than before and in 2012 the band eventually got together for a longer, final session in Umeå, at Tonteknik Recording. The result was 'Vertikal'.
'Vertikal' marked a much-anticipated return for the band after five years spent cultivating the ideas and directing the influences that have helped form a concept for the album. Distilled throughout are themes of machinery, repetition and clear, linear structures honed to the visual imagery of Fritz Lang's classic expressionist science-fiction film 'Metropolis'. The music broods, builds and boils as you may expect from Cult of Luna, but never over-complicates itself or veers from its intentions; it is arguably their finest and most cohesive piece of work to date.
After releasing "Vertikal" in January 2013 and many months of intense touring in 2013 the band now shows a new, even more futuristic outlook with "Vertikal II".LP 1 + 2 (Vertikal I)

Rise Of The Empress (Out of Stock)White Empress' debut fulllength album of forbidden delights, titled 'Rise of the Empress', is set for release on Peaceville Records on September 29th. The album was recorded in White Empress' studio and has been mixed and mastered by veteran producer, Kit Woolven (Thin Lizzy, Cradle of Filth). Formed by guitarist Paul Allender previously of UK titans Cradle of Filth - and with a full band lineup, this new venture into the metal landscape under the moniker of White Empress exudes the depth and ferocity of his prior work whilst pushing new boundaries. Paul's signature razorsharp riffing & epic, melodic twists and turns compliment the sumptuously alluring & often demonic voice of Mary Zimmer (Luna Mortis) to create a master class in savage yet uplifting metallic darkness.
With Paul's relentless guitar and Mary's diverse vocals, ranging from operatic to death metal screams, White Empress is exploring new areas of metal. White Empress comprise: Paul Allender, formerly the main guitarist and songwriter in Cradle of Filth, vocalist Mary Zimmer from Luna Mortis, Will Graney, keyboardist from Damnation Angels, Chela Harper, bass player for Coal Chamber, guitarist Jeremy Kohnmann from The Awakening, and drummer Zac Morris, who's played with many bands including Ugly Kid Joe.Rise of the Empress
