Drogas LightA decade after Lupe Fiasco exploded onto the hip-hop scene with his seminal 2006 debut Food & Liquor, the Chicago native is closing the chapter on his career with his most visualized projects yet. The independent rapper, who parted ways with his former label Atlantic Records following the release of 2015's Tetsuo & Youth, hits his creative peak with a trilogy of albums-Drogas Light, Drogas and Skulls-the final curtain call on one of the most gifted lyricists and visionaries to grace the mic.
If anything, Drogas Light, the first delivery to fans arriving in early 2017 via 1st & 15th/Thirty Tigers, is a testament to Fiasco's artistic growth throughout the years. The 14-track LP is free of restraint, and daring by his standards: the sonic and storytelling palettes are vast and diverse, more so than ever before, traipsing genre and style with ease and touting songs to soundtrack everything from a night at the club to a quiet listen on headphones. Where Tetsuo & Youth leaned into more experimental pastures, Drogas Light is the embodiment of a musician whose foray beyond the boundaries of hip-hop feels increasingly natural, a glimpse into the genius that will be Fiasco's legacy as he inevitably walks away from the spotlight.
From the start of Drogas Light, Fiasco lays his rhyming skills bare, attacking a haunted beat accented by a screwed vocal sample on opener "Dopamine" that self-reflectively emphasizes the magnetism of the album ("Over-d off of this, but don't fall asleep 'til the dopamine hit!" he chants). The set is dotted with several trap-inflected songs-"NGL" featuring Ty Dolla $ign is a turn-up anthem that entertains the reasons why success comes slow to many, while the STREETRUNNER-produced lead single "Made in the USA" catalogues the various home-grown, illicit products manufactured in the country.
Fiasco has often been pegged as a socially conscious emcee, likened to peers including Common and Nas, and he lives up to the reputation on "City of the Year," where he explores the economic disparity of Chi-town. He flexes his storytelling muscle on the hypnotic, spinning "Jump," on which he unfolds the tale of going from a "trapper to a rapper" by supplying a female adversary with a career boost. But it's when the album hits the relax button that Drogas Light coasts on cushy grooves: "Kill," also featuring Ty Dolla $ign, is an after-hours ode to women who work at gentleman's clubs, and the vamping closer "More Than My Heart" is an emotionally charged hat-tip to all the mothers who would sacrifice anything for their children.
While Drogas Light signifies the beginning of the end for Fiasco, it represents how far he's come since he first entered the game and merely accents the intellectual breadth of the discography he'll leave behind. At the onset of career, rappers including Jay Z and Kanye West regarded him as the future of hip-hop, with the latter tapping him for a standout guest verse on "Touch the Sky" after Fiasco remixed West's hit "Diamonds from Sierra Leone." His debut album Food & Liquor earned him three Grammy nominations and a win for the Jill Scott-assisted "Daydreamin'," which netted the trophy for Best Urban/Alternative Performance in 2008.
In the years since, he evolved from the backpack rap of his debut with a string of classics including 2007's Lupe Fiasco's The Cool and 2011's Lasers, a prelude to the following year's Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album Pt. 1. While Drogas Light is just a taste of what he has to offer in the new year, it's yet another earmark on a track record of an artist who continually comes into new bloom.1. Dopamine Lit (Intro)

Street Of The Love Of Days
Amor de Días (Spanish for love of days) is the supergroup formed by Alasdair MacLean of the Clientele and Lupe Núñez-Fernández of Pipas. Over the course of three years, they quietly put together their debut record during evenings and weekends as they called in local friends (Louis Philippe) and visiting musicians (Damon and Naomi, Gary Olson) for sessions, building up the songs multifaceted arrangements and vocal harmonies with harps, bouzoukis, strings, recorders, and brass over the core of dual Spanish guitars and the dream imagery of their bilingual lyrics.
The result is a focused, cohesive jewel of chamber pop that reflects a little of Gal Costa and Caetano Velosos elegant brand of bossa nova, a bit of Erik Saties haunting night music, and a large dose of spooky psychedelic folk. But the beautiful harmony that sings throughout the record makes it all their own.
At times spare and empty, at times rich with instrumental texture, and at times jazz-tinged and hypnotic, Street of the Love of Days rivals anything either Alasdair or Lupe has recorded before.1. Foxes Song

The House At SeaAmor de Días, the collaboration between Alasdair MacLean (The Clientele) and Lupe Núñez-Fernández (Pipas), release their sophomore album The House at Sea. While debut Street of the Love of Days took three years to make, The House at Sea was recorded and mixed in only nine days. As a result, the sessions centered around a smaller band-the twin Spanish guitars and voices of Núñez-Fernández and MacLean, and an occasional rhythm section of James Hornsey and Howard Monk, both formerly of The Clientele. The fast pace of the sessions resulted in a rawer, more urgent album, recorded by Brian O'Shaughnessy (My Bloody Valentine, Primal Scream, Denim, Birdie) on 1970s valve equipment with a feeling for space and a deliberately limited palette, all the elements of which had to count. The House at Sea is a snapshot of a year's songs written in London and Madrid. There are pop songs, delirious dream accounts, strange lyrical puzzles, and stories from the city and the suburbs. The theme of the sea threads its way throughout the record along with a gentle sense of drifting and departure, of being lost, of saudade-a sadness at lost things.1. Voice in the Rose

Super Fake NiceNearly twenty years since the formation of his Tennessee-based project, Self, Matt Mahaffey is releasing a new EP - Super Fake Nice.
The six-song collection will feature original tracks - "Gonna Rock," "Subconscious," "Hey Hipster," "Looks And Money," "Splitting Atoms" and the lead single "Runaway." Super Fake Nice was written, produced, recorded, performed and arranged by Matt Mahaffey at his Fresh Imperial studio in Franklin, Tennessee. This is the first new body of SElf material to be released since his 2005 album Porno, Mint, & Grime.
SElf is the brainchild of Matt Mahaffey, a multi-instrumentalist studio wizard. He began writing songs at the age of four and spent a large part of his high school and college upbringing mastering studio techniques. In 1995 he released his debut SElf album, Subliminal Plastic Motives followed by tours with Garbage, 311 and Cracker. An early review of the debut from People Magazine described Mahaffey as a "virtual one-man rhythm nation" and stated the album proves " that alternative rock can be more than atonal, angst-ridden prattle." Following Subliminal , came releases on Dreamworks and Spongebath including 1999's Breakfast With Girls and 2000's Gizmodgery (made completely with toy instruments).
Since then, Mahaffey further crafted his unique blend of funk, hip-hop and alt-pop and in the early 2000's his focus started to shift into film and television, scoring music for CSI Miami, Entourage and Weeds. He also started playing and producing for other artists including Beck, Pink, Liz Phair, Keith Urban, The Sounds, Lupe Fiacsco, HelloGoodbye and Tenacious D.1. Runaway

Black Radio, Volume 2On their 2012 breakout Black Radio, Robert Glasper Experiment laid out a new paradigm for creative music, reaching beyond entrenched genre boundaries to create a singular vision that drew from all reaches of contemporary black music and beyond. Black Radio drew unanimous praise from critics across the board and earned Glasper the highest chart positions of his career when the album debuted at #10 on Billboard's Top Current Albums chart, also claiming the #1 spot on both the Billboard Jazz chart and the iTunes R&B chart. The album kept earning accolades all the way to the 2013 GRAMMY Awards where Black Radio was awarded Best R&B Album.
In 2013, RGE ups the ante with the release of Black Radio 2 (Blue Note), another genre-defying effort that takes the Black Radio blueprint and builds to even greater heights. The core remains the Experiment, as astoundingly versatile a band as has ever existed, featuring Robert Glasper on keyboards, Derrick Hodge on bass, Mark Colenburg on drums, and Casey Benjamin on vocoder and saxophone. Providing the vocals throughout is another jaw-dropping roll call of vocalists including Common, Patrick Stump, Brandy, Jill Scott, Dwele, Marsha Ambrosius, Anthony Hamilton, Faith Evans, Norah Jones, Snoop Dogg, Lupe Fiasco, Luke James, Emeli SandÉ, Lalah Hathaway, and Malcolm-Jamal Warner.
On Black Radio 2, the emphasis is on songwriting with 11 of the 12 tracks new originals, from the soaring lead track "I Stand Alone" featuring rapper Common and vocalist Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy through Jill Scott's sensual ode to connection "Calls" to the reinvention fantasy "Somebody Else" featuring BRIT Award winner Emeli SandÉ. The lone cover is the album closer, a spine-tingling version of Stevie Wonder's "Jesus Children of America" by vocalist Lalah Hathaway that also features a poignant spoken word tribute to the 20 young victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting by poet Malcolm-Jamal Warner. The album was produced by Glasper along with executive producers Nicole Hegeman and Eli Wolf.1. Baby Tonight (Black Radio Intro)

IlevitableIleana Cabra, a/k/a PG-13, the fierce femme vocalist of Puerto Rico's world-renown alternative hiphop/rock/reggaetón band Calle 13, joined the band when she was only 16, but she was already an old soul. "When we did our first concert in Puerto Rico," said ILe, "I sang a solo version of La Lupe's song 'Puro Teatro.' It was kind of a moment of transition for me." It may not have seemed that way at the time, but her debut nostalgia-soaked collection of alternative ballads Ilevitable, was inevitable.
ILe, who began her association with Calle 13 by jumping into a verbal sparring match with her brother RenÉ (Residente) on the band's first single, "La Aguacatona," has been levitating across stages with the band for over a decade. But with Ilevitable, a 12-song collection of meticulously produced boleros, waltzes, mambos, pop-rock ballads, and even a bugalú, ILe has created an instant classic that reveals a thoughtful and innovative artistry for the first time. The album's first single, "Caníbal," is a fitting example of ILe's eclectic tastes and ability to combine an older, more romantic point of view with the darkness of the new millennium. Its melancholy guitar riffs and 60's girl group piano chords-played by Eduardo Cabra (Visitante)--immediately draw the listener into ILe's unique sensibility. The song's lyrics, climaxed by syrupy-scary violins, describe someone who is consuming herself with doubt and regret.
Recorded over several months in local Puerto Rican studios, Ilevitable features upwards of 75 musicians, composers, and arrangers including ILe's brother Eduardo, her sister Milena, her father Joey Cabra, and her romantic partner Ismael Cancel, her co-producer, who is also a drummer-percussionist for Calle 13. "We're all connected," said RenÉ. "We constantly stimulate each other. Ileana grew up in that artistic atmosphere that's why she matured so quickly."1. QuiÉn Eres Tú

Having a knack for producing and writing many hit records, in 1966 Crewe recorded Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels in the studio and cut what many believe to be one of the first rock meets blue eyed soul albums with the Take A Ride, which of course featured their first chart topper Jenny Take A Ride. From this moment on, the Mitch Ryder persona was born, becoming a hero to many rock and roll fans throughout the world.
