New Skin For The Old Ceremony

When Cohen became known as a musician in his late 30s people were surprised that his music seemed to come out fully formed.

Many were familiar with his work as an author and poet, but did not know that he had been a musician for most of his life.

For Cohen, making music was another way to bring his poetry to the people. The dark thrall of his songs portray an artist that is ever able to trace the hidden contours of love, lust, sex, religion, politics and history.

'New Skin For The Old Ceremony', his 4th studio album from 1974, is a distinct move towards richer arrangements and greater musicality, yet through simple song structures the attention is still drawn to the poetry of the lyrics.

This first vinyl re-issue since its original release includes 'Who By Fire', a duet with Janis Ian, and a song about Cohen's relationship with Janis Joplin, 'Chelsey Hotel #2'.

    International

To put it bluntly, Lust For Youth's International is unrecognizable as a Lust For
Youth record on first listen. Hannes Norrvide's previous solo albums under the
Lust for Youth moniker have been described as "dark, cold, atonal, tormented,
lonely, and lower than lo-fi." The approach on International has shifted dramatically. Writing as a three-piece now, with longtime live collaborator Loke Rahbek
and new band member Malthe Fisher, who produces and plays guitar, LFY have
entered a completely new territory. The result is stunning. International is a
buoyant synth masterpiece in the vein of early Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys
and New Order. Norrvide's work has always had pop sensibilities buried deep
in the reverb, but the hooks are front and center on International, and there is
    nothing lo-fi about it.

That is not to say the record is without substance. There are still some deeply
introspective moments as well, notably the instrumental passages "Ultras" and
"Basorexia," which evoke the morning-after loneliness that a lot of earlier LFY
work has explored. According to Rahbek, "the record sort of happened by
chance. Hannes and I had talked about recording some stuff together for the
fun of it, and Malthe offered to help us record. Initially, we were just going to do
a song or two, but within a few weeks it was obvious that it was a combination
that worked. The period was strange, terrible things happened in everyone's life
outside of the studio, so as a result many hours were spent in the studio, like a
    safe zone."

"As the title indicates," Rahbek adds, "the record deals with the rootless, sometimes almost inhuman, nature of traveling and touring. Hotel rooms and
strangers' beds, drugs and clubs, and the impossibility of living a regular life." It
may be an irregular life, but nothing could suit them better. International is Norrvide's magnum opus, and with Fisher's production and Rahbek's co-writing
skills, the potential this band has always shown has been fully realized.

    L.A. Confidential

    Limited Edition Red Colored Vinyl

L.A. Confidential contains a treasure trove of unreleased outtakes from the sessions that were initially recorded in 1979 and 1980 by Bomp mastermind Greg Shaw. After the initial break up of the Dead Boys, nihilistic front man extraordinaire Stiv Bators recorded material for Disconnected and several singles for Bomp. The music took a decidedly different approach, bypassing punk chutzpuh like Caught With the Meat in Your Mouth for '60s-derived garage pop abandon. Upon release, Dead Boys fans were less than enthused. Even so, this material stands on its own and continues to be rediscovered by a new audience much like Iggy's post-Stooges discs The Idiot and Lust for Life. The 18 tracks are all remastered from the original tapes, including alternate mixes of The Last Year, It's Cold Outside, Not That Way Anymore, Circumstantial Evidence, I'll Be Alright, a demo version of I'll Stand Accused, a rehearsal of the Damned's Neat, Neat, Neat, and Morrison Rant (recorded live at the Ritz in 1980), which is pure throwaway fun.

    Post Pop Depression

A lot of geezers my age don't work out of their comfort zone anymore because once you become legendary you don't want people challenging you." - Iggy Pop

Post Pop Depression is IGGY POP's new, studio album, produced by Joshua Homme (Queens of the Stone Age and Eagles of Death Metal). The 17th Iggy Pop album, and a worthy addition to the 22 album legacy spawned with the immortal trilogy of The Stooges, Fun House and Raw Power, spanning massively influential solo outings including 1977's opening 1-2 combo of The Idiot and Lust For Life, and 1990's gold-certified Brick By Brick.

The first Iggy Pop album co-created with producer Homme, Post Pop Depression began with a succinctly worded text from Iggy to Joshua, and was realized in seclusion with Homme's enlisted aid of his Queens Of The Stone Age bandmate and Dead Weather-man Dean Fertitia and Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders.

Post Pop Depression is a singular work that stands proudly alongside the best works of either of its principles, from The Stooges to Queens Of The Stone Age, bearing its creators' undeniable sonic DNA while sounding like nothing they've done before. It's a record that wouldn't exist without either Pop or Homme-and one that probably shouldn't in theory if you really think about it-but it does, and we and rock n roll are all the better for it.

    The Classic

I'm in the best place I've ever been in my life, declares Joan Wasser, and she's just recorded the album that proves it. The Classic, the fourth album of originals by the uniquely charismatic artist known as Joan As Police Woman, builds on the creative impetus and success of its 2011 predecessor The Deep Field, on which Joan strove to create music rooted in an intimate, elemental and uplifting brand of soul combined with her own unique serene, torch-singing temperament, with a more liberated feel than ever before. The result is a perfect reflection of her efforts to address - and solve - personal issues and so reject the singer-songwriter's traditional melancholic disposition for an unashamed lust for life. As graffiti in the artwork of her 2006 debut album Real Life read: Evolve and Be Brave.

The Classic is named after one of its ten tracks. Part is to do with the way we recorded mostly live; the way records used to get made, she explains. But I wrote 'The Classic' itself as a classic girl-group doo wop song, and the lyric refers to classic old songs like Marvin Gaye and Tammy Terrell 'You're All I Need To Get By', Stevie Wonder's ' Joy Inside My Tears' and Danny & The Juniors' 'Rock'n'Roll Is Here To Stay'. And at the end, I spell out the name of the song, like Aretha Franklin did with 'R-E-S-P-E-C-T'! The song begins 'I am home in your arms' and it's solely joyful, expressing jubilation. Melancholy is still part of my life, but it's no longer leeching energy from my life.

    Anvil Is Anvil

High Class Double Gatefold LP Version With Clear Vinyl + CD

Anvil is Anvil! A self confident statement. A band philosophy. And what's more: a life motto. Anvil is Anvil, that's the title of their latest album. And the name says it all: an unambiguous, uncompromising recording, typical of this band. At the same time it's fresh, occasionally surprising and generally exciting through and through. A stalwart metal manifesto by a band who stand for authenticity and credibility like few others in this fast lived business.

Anvil is Anvil sounds all of one piece and presents the band's amazing diversity, combined with their conscious loyalty to the compositional DNA of their own classics. "Die For A Lie" for example sounds like a contemporary version of "Jackhammer" and the stomping "Runaway Train" features the same directives as "Smoking Green", only based on Kudlow's present day maturity.

Anvil is Anvil was produced by Martin "Mattes" Pfeiffer (U.D.O.) at the Redhead 4 Studios in Pulheim near Cologne, Germany. For Lips, whose family is Jewish, as is drummer Robb Reiner's, it was a special moment to work with a German producer in a German studio.

Anvil is Anvil not only touches on sensitive issues but also documents the band's lust for life, their dynamic musical style and their absolute down to earthiness. When Lips delivers the line "Ace of Spades and the joker is wild" on "It's Your Move" with a surprisingly realistic Motörhead timbre, it proves his sense of humor and is an homage at the same time. And when Anvil invite their fans to the studio to join the choir on "Daggers And Rum", it only shows the closeness between the musicians and their fans.

Too Young To Be In Love

Too Young To Be In Love is the first fully-realized Hunx and His Punx album, and the groups first for Hardly Art. It was recorded in New York City by Ivan Julian, one of the founding members of inimitable NYC punk legends Richard Hell and the Voidoids. This record was made in the same studio that one of Hunx's idols, Ronnie Spector, once recorded in. While it is preceded by the Gay Singles LP (True Panther Sounds/Matador Records, 2009), a collection of hard-to-find and out-of-print 7 singles, Too Young To Be In Love is the first proper studio record from Hunx and His Punx.

Too Young To Be In Love also marks the first time the group has ever been comprised entirely by punkettes, another name for the all girl band that band leader Seth Bogart (aka Hunx) always dreamed of. Shannon Shaw (of Shannon and the Clams) plays bass, and wrote three of the albums songs. Her powerful voice on Lovers Lane and The Curse of Being Young crackles and breaks with a raw ferocity that perfectly compliments Hunxs swoon-worthy nasal croon. This album also represents a distinct reversal of roles, the all-girl quartet (Shaw, plus guitarist Michelle Santamaria, drummer Erin Emslie, and Amy Blaustein on guitar/organ) bring the fire, while Hunx brings the sugar. All of the ladies sing on this album, and their voices combine to create some modern Wall of Sound magic.

Hunx and His Punx might be the first ever girl group fronted by a flamboyant gay male whose dream in life is to sound like a girl. They have created a unique new sound they refer to as Young Oldies, a mixture of '50s teenage rock n roll, '60s girl groups and bubblegum pop.

I only write songs out of heartbreak, says Hunx of the new record. Older songs focused on trashier homoerotic topics like cruising and boyfriend stealing. But Too Young To Be In Love is all about love and heartbreak. People tend to have scandalous ideas about Seth Hunx Bogart. This can happen when you try to French kiss the entire front row at one of your shows, pose for photographs nude or bare everything in the video for Lust For Life by the band Girls. But behind all of this is a sweet and somewhat innocent entertainer who knows how to put on a show.

    Bizet: Carmen (Speakers Corner)

This is a problem recording, and even fans of Leonard Bernstein and Marilyn Horne will find it odd« writes a large mail-order media company about this Carmen production. However, discerning listeners who submerge themselves in the music will soon conclude that the problem is rather to be found among the many highly acclaimed and styled-up other recordings that present the fiery musical portrait as a sanitized, spirited indoor ballet. This is very different from Bernstein, who hints at the work's inevitable tragedy already in the agonisingly weighty clashing cymbals of the surprisingly slow opening. His rustic-sounding street scenes are filled with vaudeville, raw and authentic, and so typical of how people behave when they dance out-of-doors. This Carmen is far closer to the cracking Westside Story than a saturated Traviata.

Marilyn Horne in the title role lends the full-blooded Carmen such an incredible voice in all manner of moods that one can hardly believe that we are listening to just one singer. One minute we hear the bright voice of a young girl lusting for life, and in the next minute the mezzo-like pained cry of a man-killing heroine.
James McCracken has a distinctive dry voice, which is full of rousing passion, and is ideal in the role of Don JosÉ. He is complemented by the dramatic, powerful baritone Tom Krause as the torero Escamillo.

Harry Pearson, the founder and former Editor in Chief of the specialist magazine The Absolute Sound, accorded this outstanding recording a regular mention in his 'super disc' list - no problem!

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Eric Clapton and Duane Allman in the Same Band for the Only Time: Derek and the Dominos' Layla a Timeless Batch of Fire-Pot Blues, Poignant Gospel, Searing Rock, and Lustful Emotion

Mastered from the Original Master Tapes and Pressed at RTI: Mobile Fidelity 180g 2LP of Layla Is the Definitive-Sounding Analog Edition, Presents Music With Immersive Detail and Realism

The reputation of Derek and the Dominos' Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, their lone record, precedes it. Eric Clapton performing in the studio with Duane Allman, Bobby Whitlock, Carl Radle, and more for the only time. A batch of fire-pot blues, poignant gospel, and searing rock - all birthed from the leader's insatiable lust for his friend George Harrison's wife. Now, experience it all, and one of the most famous guitar solos and codas in history, in unsurpassed sound courtesy of this quintessential Mobile Fidelity reissue.

Mastered from the original master tapes and pressed at RTI, Mobile Fidelity's 180g 2LP set exposes the brilliance of Tom Dowd's original production and the scope of the virtuoso musicians' playing. You've never been closer to the aching vocals, stinging leads, tormented emotions, or wowing intensity that grace every track. Clapton's tones emerge with unprecedented soulfulness. Afforded their own space in the mix, Allman's slide-guitar passages crackle with urgency. All-important sonic components such as soundstaging, imaging, and dynamics transport you to the actual event. Mobile Fidelity's analog version testifies on behalf of why fans deemed Clapton god.

Then, of course, there's the title track - crowned the 27th greatest song of all time by Rolling Stone. What to say about the outro - arguably the most famous, passionately penetrating, visceral, double-edged guitar solo in history. Clapton's strings weeping with longing, hope, regret, unrequited love. It deserves the best-possible sonic platform, and receives it here, on a pressing that brings Slowhand's every finger moment into great relief. Get inside Clapton's head, burrow into the conflicted emotions fluttering in his heart as he pines for his another man's wife, and in the process, produces an album that forever lives in the souls of anyone who's ever loved and lost.

Clapton's pained yearning permeates everything here. Works such as the swampy Tell the Truth, the pleading Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad?, and blues-drenched Have You Ever Loved a Woman? attest to his raw-nerve discomfort, guilt, and desire. He leaves teardrops on the microphone stand and blood on the floor, singing and playing as if his life depends on it and if, by some miracle, the music will serve as both a confessional and apology to Harrison. It's all magnified by Clapton achieving a spiritual and sonic oneness with his band, which matches his high-stakes precision with a rolling, tumbling looseness.

Allman adds firepower and achieves a still-unrivaled simpatico bond with Clapton, but each participant soars. Consider: The call-and-response, Sam and Dave-derived vocal exchanges between Whitlock and Clapton. Rich, creamy, Southern-stoked blends of R&B, blues, and soul. Vibrant tapestries in which the pianos, bass, guitars, and voices explode with ravishing fervor, naturalism, and desperation. Indeed, maybe a combo this great was only intended one shot in the studio. Perhaps the paralyzing degree of potency on display here, and the musicianship that remains the standard by which any blues-rock is judged, is meant to be preserved as one standalone record. Whatever the case, this is the analog version to own.

Soft Metals' Lenses is a continuation of their
ethos aiming directly at your body and subconscious mind with an intimacy that only lovers can bring.

The song "Lenses" describes the experience of shifted consciousness with the lyrics "breaking through my perception of you, breaking through my concept of life". It celebrates the feeling of escape from a mind imprisoned with lack of presence and stuck in habit all set to an earnest beat and lush enigmatic melodies that entwine and seduce. "Tell Me", "No Turning Back", When I Look Into Your Eyes" expresses that nervous, vulnerable feeling of falling for someone, but questioning the reality of the situation asking "Is this love true? Or are we just lost in lust?", "when you said you loved me, I laid my whole life down", "When I look into your eyes, I wonder if we'll meld". "In the Air", perhaps the most movement inspiring track of the album, is a dense, pulsating piece about the power of nature, the effects of seasonal changes on all living things that rule over sexuality, productivity, and inspiration- the basis of man's various forms of mysticism.

    Blue Healer

Unkempt visionary, Squirrel Nut Zippers founder, former sideman for Jim Dickinson and Buddy Guy, self-proclaimed Arkansas Son-in-Law- Jimbo Mathus has lived many lifetimes, more than most of us could stomach. Now, Mathus is back with a new album, Blue Healer, recorded in Water Valley, Mississippi with Fat Possum & Big Legal Mess producer Bruce Watson.

"It's the story of a man in a southern landscape who is swept insanely apart by internal and external winds," Mathus says of the new record. "He digs deeper and deeper into the very fabric of his reality, experiencing love and lust, despair, hope and sheer animal exhilaration on levels few ever do. He is tested in every way imaginable and achieves a sort of enlightenment - gains power and understanding of life's mysteries. Yet questions remain. He wonders if the struggle was worth it, or even real. Is he madman or sage? Con man or honest counsel? Is this autobiographical or fictional? Only the Blue Healer knows the answer to the great cosmic heebie-jeebie."

Hurry Up, We're Dreaming (Colored Vinyl)

Pressed On Clear Pink & Clear Blue Vinyl

With these soft spoken words on the simply-titled opening track-"Intro"- M83 mastermind Anthony Gonzalez introduces us to his sixth record and first double disc album, Hurry Up, We're Dreaming.

Dauntlessly singing into the void that was left behind since Saturdays=Youth, Gonzalez suddenly surges with overwhelming emotion as the music mounts an invisible precipice. Historically, he softly eased you into his world, introducing you to the lush and radiant spaces between captivating melodies and intimate lyrics, but not this time. Not on this record.

Graduating from the fuzzy, fumbling emotional cobwebs and draped ambiance of past records, Hurry Up, We're Dreaming careens past its audience. Brazenly stretching out along the horizon, spilling glittery, golden arms of sound across the landscape, it holds your breath hostage without you even noticing you were missing it. If it seemed that Anthony was basking in the sunshine-drenched days of his youth when he released Saturdays in 2008, then it can be said that in 2011, at the age of 30, he is tempestuously charging towards his future with Hurry Up, We're Dreaming.

Relocating to Los Angeles from Antibes, Gonzalez surrounded himself with players pivotal to completing his childhood dream of a double disc record. Producer Justin Meldal-Johnsen (Beck, NIN, The Mars Volta, Goldfrapp) and guitarist Brad Laner (from 90s band Medicine) had been hugely influential on Anthony growing up and now were central to the new record's creation.

"In France there is this show on TV where at the end there is a musical guest who plays one or two songs. I remember one night when I was a teenager being at home watching the best of performances and looking at this crazy bass player with a big afro and thinking, 'Wow this guy is so cool.' "And now I am working with him. It's so intense that thinking about it makes me feel weird. But it's weird in a super good way. Same thing with Brad, I was listening to his music when I was first getting into music and now he's on my album."

Anthony and Justin met backstage in 2009 at Scotland's T In The Park. Later, "he came to me very genuinely stating that 'he was a fan and that he would love to work with me,'" explains Gonzalez. "I love when people do that because I can tell it's coming from the heart. He was sincere and that's the way I like to work with people."

Stepping away from his work with producers Ken Thomas and Ewan Pearson on Saturday, Gonzalez freckles his new chapter with signature M83 fingerprints while pushing himself beyond the constricting emotions of a guarded musician. Bored with being frustrated and shy, Anthony is respectful of the precious time given to him and doesn't want to leave behind any regrets, thus thrusting himself into the spotlight vocally. He tests out different ways of singing, ranging from a spectral breathy whisper to a howling scream, and each voice clings to us like a dew-heavy spider web at dawn.

Fans will recognize band member Morgan Kibby, her vocals flirting with the shadowy places in between verses, leaping off the record in spoken word or blending with an adult choir. Morgan will join Anthony on tour but she was never meant to sing as much on this record as she had on pervious projects. Quenching his desire to work with a different person on each record, Gonzalez added LA-based chanteuse Zola Jesus to the mix for the completion of "Intro." "The song was already written but I really wanted a female vocal on it and I was kind of struggling to find the right person, but then I heard her music and it just made sense."

Where Saturday=Youth is drenched in lustful exploration and hungry adolescent wonder, Hurry Up is decadently cunning and seductive. "Intro" and "My tears are becoming a sea" eerily croon to you, swirling all of the glitter and growth from the past records into an epic swell, mysteriously and dramatically warning you of the impact you are about to experience. "Midnight City" (disc one) and "OK Pal" (disc two) are humid, adrenaline driven dreams unlike anything we have heard from M83 in the past. "Midnight City" adeptly sweeps you through abandoned concrete streets swimming in broken neon light and aggressively pushing and pulsating to synthetic beats. While "OK Pal" catcalls you to a locker full of mapped out Peter Gabriel-esque echoing lyrics, leaving you stranded in a post-apocalyptic landscape. These journeys are about awakening, craving and conquering. Throughout Hurry Up, We're Dreaming Anthony carries the listener to different countries of sound in his own universe, "We didn't need a story, we didn't need a real world. We just had to keep walking and we became the stories- we became the places." Drifting away from his previous records and reigned in politeness he unleashes all that he has been dreaming of and yearning for. Even when he takes a second to look back on "Echoes of Mine" the velvety, elderly voice of a woman heartbreakingly tells the story of a girl drenched in the shadows of her youth, knowing she has to grow up.

Grandiose in scale and inspired by Smashing Pumpkin's revered double disc Melancholy & The Infinite Sadness, Anthony has long had the goal to create his own monumental double disc record. "I saw when I was a teenager that I could dig into it [the album]. It was like a treasure. If I were a teenager nowadays I would try to find something as creative as this album. They had so much to say in their songs."

Impressed with the juxtaposing sun and moon artwork featured on Melancholy, Anthony focuses in on another natural duality: siblings. The cover artwork mirrors this relationship, featuring a photograph of a little boy with a little girl sitting on a bed. The photograph perpetuates the conversation for the two distinct voices we behind each disc, representing two sides of an overall piece that are almost the same. "I want people to listen to it as two different human beings that are connected somehow, but every song on the album has a secret on the other side."

Soaring and scraping up against the sky while sharing each uncharted frontier with new collaborators is what M83 does best. Gracefully coming into the next decade of his life, Anthony delivers what makes each record sincere, innocent, and full of joy: he gives us his past and his future.

"I think it is a reflection of my 30 years of being a human being. It's a compilation of all my previous music together. It's a retrospective of myself."

    State Of Discontent

The Unseen play punk rock, mix in hardcore, scream their asses off, and write great hooks. Their music and lyrics are filled with pent up fear, confusion, lust, guilt, dread, hate, and resentment, but they're neither a political band nor a street punk band, because those terms are too one-dimensional. Their songs deal with every thoughtful aspect in life. Produced by the Dropkick Murphy's Ken Casey and mixed by Jim Siegel and Bad Religion's Brett Gurewitz. Live Songs 2011

When Cohen became known as a musician in his late 30s with his albums Songs Of Leonard Cohen and the sophomore Songs From A Room, people were surprised that his music seemed to come out fully formed.

Live Songs was released in 1973; Cohen's fourth album was a collection of recordings made at a number of concerts in Europe between 1970 and 1973. The collection consists of songs from 1969's Songs From A Room, such as 'Bird On A Wire', 'Story of Isaak' and a new version of 'Seems So Long Ago, Nancy' (now simply dubbed 'Nancy'), and a number of new songs.

The epic climax is unmistakably the 13-minute 'Please Don't Pass Me By (A Disgrace)', in which Cohen describes his personal descent into hell & oblivion. The song tormented Cohen to such a degree that he rarely sang it again.

    Interiors

Interiors, Cameron Mesirow's second full-length release as
Glasser, is a more considered, confident, and much more
sharply personal album than its predecessor. It's central
themes are love and anxiety and the spatial constraints
of both in the landscape of one's life. In the three years
since Cameron released her breakout debut "Ring", she
toured around the world (with Jónsi of Sigur Rós, The XX,
Delorean, among others) and left her California home for
New York. Along the way, she discovered a new partner
in producer Van Rivers (Fever Ray, Blonde Redhead)
whose background in techno production added expansive
spatial elements to her music that reflect both the looming,
condensed architecture of Glasser's new adopted home
as well as the intricate internal worlds she conjures in on
    her own.

The tension between interior and exterior space fills the
album. In architect Rem Koolhaas' book Delirious New
York, which Mesirow credits as an inspiration, the author
suggests that New York's massive, stoic-faced buildings
are monuments rife with secrets. Interiors is Cameron's
attempt to exorcise and address some of those metropolitan
secrets. "I thought a lot about the physical impositions in
my life, and about the fluid emotional boundaries in my
relationships," Mesirow says. "There's no limit to what can
be said about these structures. I can't help but live and
work in them, exploring their many folds."

The instrumentation of the album is a mixture of synthetic
and organic sounds, real strings, reeds and drums
combined with programmed ones, a purposeful coupling
of natural enemies. "I like music where you're not thinking
about what a specific instrument is," she says. "An
instrument-less quality. It doesn't come from a band, but
from a whisper in the wind." As on Ring there are sounds
used for unlikely purposes; vocals used as percussive
accents, or melodic themes assembled from environmental
sounds. The song "Design" illustrates this with Cameron's
own pitched-down vocals serving as a writhing bass line
in the frantic depiction of lust. The Glasser we find on
Interiors is smoother and smokier, more confident and
defined against an increasingly stoic electronic music
backdrop. The effect is a paragon of sonic architecture--a
soundspace that's packed tight but never feels crowded.
