Lyle Lovett & His Large Band (Awaiting Repress)

Lyle Lovett and His Large Band remains the big man's most ambitious album in many ways. A smart split is effected, and not only between styles--the horn-driven swing of the first half backs the record's wittiest, slyest songs, while the country-folk numbers are among Lovett's most pensive. He's not so mournful that he can't raise an eyebrow at heartache, though: try I Married Her Just Because She Looks Like You. --Rickey Wright

Live At The Old Quarter, Houston Texas (Awaiting Repress)

Culled from Townes Van Zandt's years of independently released country-folk records, this austere collection of songs here serves, in effect, as a greatest-hits package. Van Zandt's dry, narrative wit was the source of influence for such singer-songwriters as Lyle Lovett, Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris and Willie Nelson, and one would be hard-pressed to find a more simple, prettier love song than If I Needed You (a hit for Emmylou Harris) or a more riveting ballad than Kathleen, both sung with focused precision. Brand New Companion shows off Van Zandt's blues-picking expertise, Talking Thunderbird Blues demonstrates his wit and one of his best creations, For the Sake of the Song shows off his poetic strength. A wonderful place to start your Townes Van Zandt fascination. This version of Live At The Old Quarter, Houston Texas comes courtesy of the Townes Van Zandt reissue series that Fat Posssum is undertaking in conjuction with the Van Zandt estate.

    Flyin' Shoes

Widely considered one of the greatest songwriters of his generation, Townes Van Zandt has been hailed by such artists as Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, Lyle Lovett and Willie Nelson among others. Fat Possum proudly reissues four titles from his early career: Townes Van Zandt, Our Mother the Mountain, Delta Momma Blues and Flyin' Shoes which comprise an essential introduction to his best songs. Recorded between 1969 and 1978, Van Zandt's most prolific and most critically acclaimed decade, these four titles are the heart of any serious consideration of Van Zandt's musical career. Featuring some of the most iconic cover art in album history designed by Milton Glaser, each is a classic in every sense of the word. These four titles are the first in a series of Townes Van Zandt reissues that Fat Posssum is undertaking in conjuction with the Van Zandt estate.

The final Townes Van Zandt studio record before a nine-year-long mid-'70s recording drought, Flyin' Shoes has the advantage of Van Zandt's usual stellar songs, a famed producer (Chips Moman) and a boatload of first-class sidemen, including Jimmy Day, Randy Scrugg, and Spooner Oldham. The production is reasonably spare, allowing the quality of the songwriting and Van Zandt's creaky voice to shine through. Stand out tracks include Snake Song, No Place to Fall, When She Don't Need Me and a rare cover of Bo Diddley's Who Do You Love.

One of the best of Townes Van Zandt's early albums, Our Mother The Mountain's production offers an earnest elegance that wonderfully contrasts the songwriter's dark undertone. Highlights include his artful take on depression Kathleen and the tender love songs Be Here To Love Me and Second Lovers Song.

    United We Swing

Celebrating the red, white, and Blues! Recorded between 2003 and 2007, United We Swing finds an unparalleled array of music talent that collectively boasts 94 Grammy Awards joining Jazz at Lincoln Center Managing and Artistic Director Wynton Marsalis (a nine-time Grammy Award winner himself) and some of the world's top jazz musicians to perform blues-inflected versions of iconic American repertoire.

Those one-night-only, live performances have never been released before. They include Lenny Kravitz performing Marsalis's hypnotizing, New Orleans-inflected arrangement of Kravitz's own song, "Are You Gonna Go My Way"; Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks uniting for a stirring, infectious take on Civil Rights anthem "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free"; Bob Dylan adding harmonica licks to a deeply felt, in-the-pocket rendition of "It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry"; and Ray Charles taking the stage for one of his final performances to play "I'm Gonna Move to the Outskirts of Town."Together these artists raise their voices to highlight jazz's importance to America's cultural heritage and to remind us that, even in divided times, music can unite us all. All proceeds from the album will go toward Jazz at Lincoln Center's education programs, which introduce thousands of children to jazz each year.

Good Dog, Happy Man (Out Of Stock)

Following upon the success of last years Gone, Just Like A Train, Bill Frisell reunites with his much-admired partners from this last outing plus a handful of others for another session of inspired music-making. Joined by renowned drummer Jim Keltner and Lyle Lovett bassist Viktor Krauss, the core band is further expanded to a quintet with the addition of Greg Leisz (Joni Mitchell, k.d. lang) on dobro, mandolin and steel guitars, Wayne Horvitz on organ and Billy Cox on guitar, with a special guest appearance by Ry Cooder.

With the gut-first feeling of rock, the subtleties of jazz, and the earnestness of country, Bill Frisell continues to create a genre unto himself. As with his last two albums, he continues in a musical vein that has brought him a new level of sales success and radio play, all the while maintaining the respect he has commanded as an innovator for nearly 20 years.

What Frisell has begun to fashion on his latest releases is a sensibility as unmistakably American as that of Charles Ives or Duke Ellington, with the harmonic and tonal complexity of both and a seductive melancholy all his own. L.A. Weekly
