Love In A Time Of MadnessJosÉ James is reborn as a powerful voice in contemporary R&B on his vibrant new album Love In A Time of Madness. Madness is something new: an R&B focused foray into moody soul, electronic pop, and trap-addled beats, with the occasional influence of American gospel and Minneapolitan funk. And though James' ear is no less adventurous, this is also his most relatable, daresay sexiest work yet.1. Always There

Heavy LoveBut who is Duke Garwood? Well, he's been a prominent collaborator with artist like Mark Lanegan and Savages in the past, and he's finally finished his debut solo album. It's now his time in spotlight, and he comes highly recommended. You should know Duke Garwood. As it is, his soulful, stripped-bare sound has been under your nose this entire time. Until now, he's been the mysterious figure in tales where Mexican gangs forced tequila down his throat, a ghost-like presence at gatherings of some the world's biggest rock stars-turned-his closest friends, and an unassuming continent-hopper trying to find his way in the world. But that's all set to change with 'Heavy Love' - the brand new album about to thrust Garwood from south London's unlikely bluesman and into the spotlight he so thoroughly deserves. 'Heavy Love' is the sound of a genuine artist who has defined his career at his own pace and always on his own terms. The most focused distillation of the magic that's made his bewitching story such a pleasure to trace; it's dark, mystical, and erotic sound returns Garwood's music to the elements, to his mad blues, the unhurried grooves and desert slithers, and his spectral, past-midnight burr that's set to, at last, make him famous.1. Method To My Madness180 Gram Blue Colored Vinyl
On 2014's The Devil You Know, California bluesman Tommy Castro pared his band back to a quartet called the Painkillers and returned his guitar playing and singing to the forefront of his attack. Though the album was chock-full of guest stars, its arrangements were largely uncluttered - no horns, strings, or other gimmickry. Method to My Madness strips back the veneer even further. The tightrope of energy, grit, and inspiration on display in these 12 tunes - ten originals and two excellent covers - are usually reserved for live shows. For the first time, Castro has produced an album by himself. Recorded at Ari Rios' Laughing Tiger Studio in San Francisco, he and the Painkillers - bassist Randy McDonald, keyboardist Michael Emerson, and drummer Bowen Brown - cut the music live from the floor with minimal overdubs.
Much has been made of Castro's vocal style being influenced by the singers from the vintage Stax/Volt era. While that's somewhat true, Method to My Madness reveals, perhaps for the first time, an even deeper debt to funky soul and country-blues singer Delbert McClinton. Common Ground is a swaggering gospel-tinged soul blues. The melody and choral refrain nod at Sly Stone, but Castro lets his McClinton flag fly with a gritty delivery atop a cracking snare and driving Wurlitzer groove.
Shine a Light is dirtier; it's a razor-wire, rocking soul-blues with double-timed drumming, bumping bassline, and killer slide guitar and B-3 work, with great backing vocals from Rios and Amber Morris adding gospel fuel to the fire. The title track is a wrangling guitar-driven boogie, where funky rock meets the 12-bar blues head on. Castro testifies in his delivery, leaving no room for doubt about his intentions and attitude. While Lose Lose is a simmering Stormy Monday-esque deep blues, its proceeding tune, Died and Gone to Heaven, is a swelling, souled-out, rousing, gospel-tinged love song.1. Common Ground

Axis: Bold As LoveRanked 82/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
Very few albums radically change the musical and cultural landscape, altering our perceptions by way of a mad combination of forward-looking performance, liberating lyrical narratives, spiritual overtones, and unimaginable sounds. Jimi Hendrix's sophomore Axis: Bold As Love is one of those records, a timeless and prophetic set that still seems as if it comes to us from the future. Unrelentingly ambitious, deeply mythical, and profoundly virtuosic, the stupendous 1967 collection dives into a pool of lustful psychedelia, earthy blues, cosmic soul, and unhinged rock. Along with jazz-schooled drummer Mitch Mitchell and melodic bassist Noel Redding, Hendrix establishes a new musical language, a foundation on which fellow guitar giants such as Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Pete Townshend, and Prince would build. Ranked by Rolling Stone as the 82nd greatest album ever released, and leagues ahead of its time, Axis: Bold As Love is an absolute must-have for every music lover. Particularly now that it's finally been afforded the sonic treatment it's always deserved.
Mastered from the original two-track mix-down analog master tapes, cut by legendary engineer George Marino on upgraded equipment at Sterling Sound, and pressed on 180-gram virgin vinyl at RTI, this LP is a sonic knockout on par with the very best audiophile recordings. With all apologies to previous editions from Classic and Universal, this pressing blows away any competition. It's no wonder that this release spearheads Legacy Recordings' unprecented 2010 Jimi Hendrix Catalog Project of reissues and new releases from the greatest guitar player in history.
Featuring seminal classics such as Spanish Castle Magic, Little Wing, and Castles Made Of Sand, Axis: Bold As Love stands as one of the Jimi Hendrix Experience's monumental moments, a tapestry scorched with color, sewn together with erotic threads, and varnished with rich personality. Do not miss this seminal pressing of a most seminal recording.1. EXP

Love Will PrevailSean Ragon has been active in the DIY punk, industrial and experimental music communities on the east coast for over 15 years. Ragon also runs a record store and label in Brooklyn (Heaven Street and Blind Prophet Records, respectively). He has been recording under the moniker of Cult of Youth for the last five years.
Cult of Youth's last album produced by Chris Coady was a huge leap forward for the band, which had expanded to a four piece. It landed them on tours with Zola Jesus, Cold Cave and Iceage last summer and caused quite a stir not only among more indie-centric press outlets such as Pitchfork and Stereogum but with underground publications such as Heathen Harvest and Special Interests magazine as well.
For this album Ragon built his own recording studio from scratch in the back of his record store. This allowed him to control every aspect of the album and to take his time recording; in addition to vocals, he plays five different instruments on Love Will Prevail (electric and acoustic guitar, trombone, synth, and bass). He also engineered and mixed the entire album by himself.
For long time fans of the project, Love Will Prevail sees the marriage of the spontaneity of the earlier releases with the better recording quality of the more recent eponymous LP. This record features contributions from Glenn Maryansky on drums and Christiana Key on violin as well as percussion from the enigmatic Ning Nong and female vocals from former Battletorn vocalist (and Sean's long term girlfriend) Beverly Hames.
Love Will Prevail expands on the psychedelic neofolk foundation of the early work and adds lush atmospheres not dissimilar from Austrian post-industrial futurists Nový Svt (or even the more haunting side of late-60s Miles Davis). There is also an intentional nod to the Crass Records bands that influenced Ragon as a teenager and a tasteful hint of Velvet Underground worship.
The lyrical content is also fairly politically charged this time around, and serves as a plea for peace in a world gone mad. A far cry from the first self released single, Train To Kill, perhaps. The first single, "Man and Man's Ruin" finally realizes the majestic beauty that has always been bubbling under the surface of Ragon's work. Love Will Prevail is by far and away Cult of Youth's crowning achievement and it is the true embodiment of DIY idealism.1. Man and Man's Ruin

All We Love We Leave BehindAll We Love We Leave Behind is the latest album from Converge. Once again recorded and mixed by guitarist Kurt Ballou at his renowned Godcity Studios in Salem, Massachusetts, All We Love We Leave Behind is a no-frills Converge album that sees the band-which also features vocalist Jacob Bannon, bassist Nate Newton and drummer Ben Koller-eschewing fancy production techniques in order to create seventeen songs that work as a cohesive whole yet can also stand on their own. There's no artificial distortion, triggers, or Auto-Tune on this album, Ballou explains, it's all organic, it's real sounds that capture the way the band performs live.
From the classic rock-inflected, guitar tapping madness of Sadness Comes Home to the technical acrobatics of Aimless Arrow and relentless assault of Shame In The Way, this is an extremely varied album that has enough sonic shifts to captivate each listener's attention. It's always been important for us to have a lot of dynamics in our music because no one wants to listen to a million miles an hour all the time, Bannon responds when asked about the melodic mid-tempo groove of a song like Coral Blue. I really enjoy that song, it has a lot of twists musically that aggressive songs don't usually have and that's something we take pride in.
Lyrically Bannon approached All We Love We Leave Behind by once again writing about his own personal experiences, however there's no question that this time around his vocals are more direct and decipherable than they've been in the past. This is a personal record and all of the songs tell their own stories, Bannon explains. Every song is rooted in real life, documenting what I have experienced over the past few years. Correspondingly the title of the album is an apology letter to everything he has had to leave behind in order to pursue his path in art and music. Bannon explains that he feels like it's important to acknowledge these sacrifices in order to be a self aware individual.
All of our albums are emotional but I feel this is our most potent album to date, Bannon continues. For me a songs like 'Predatory Glow' and 'Empty on the Inside' have a tone and resonance that communicates in a new way for our band, he adds, chalking up this ability to the fact that the group have become better songwriters by spending so much time on the road and in the studio perfecting their craft. Success to me is creating something that's moving and fulfilling and I truly feel both of those things when I experience this album from start to finish.
Converge have always been the type of band that never fit into one subculture and the band credit that to the fact that since their 2001 landmark album Jane Doe they haven't had any member changes. I think because it's been the same four people for the past five records we've been able to really get comfortable with each other and develop our own personality, Ballou explains. I don't listen to much music outside of what we've recorded so I think we're more influenced by our own history of playing together than what's currently happening in any scene.
In other words when Ballou explains that Converge is the kind of band who have always existed between worlds, it's not just lip service. We don't have one typical type of listener but they tend to be intelligent people who can make up their own minds about things. That works to our advantage because they're willing to go on this journey with us and follow along with whatever twists and turns we take them on, he summarizes. Ultimately All We Love We Leave Behind may not be the most straightforward musical journey you'll embark on but it's one that you'll revisit over and over again to relive prior experiences and simultaneously create new ones. All For You: A Dedication To The Nat King Cole TrioAll for You is a tribute to the Nat King Cole Trio of the 1940s, when Cole performed as both a singer and a pianist. Krall, like her heroes Lena Horne and Carmen McRae, is also a singer-pianist, and she plays both roles on most of the songs here. She's able to link her singing to her piano playing in sympathetic ways and projects tremendous feeling through both. Like Cole in the '40s, Krall plays with a drummerless trio--here with guitarist Russell Malone and bassist Paul Keller. Their sense of intimate rapport is especially valuable on ballads such as You Call It Madness and I'm Thru with Love, but also allows such uptempo tunes as Hit That Jive Jack to swing with surprising lightness. -Geoffrey Himes1. For more than a decade, DeVotchKa has melded its influences, from Eastern European wedding bands to Norteno ballads, into an authentic and totally original blend of popular music. The bands haunting, romantic sound evokes timeless images, attracting thousands of fans to their sold-out live shows. DeVotchKas sound has proved particularly attractive to filmmakers, who have used the group's songs to score countless films and commercials, most famously Little Miss Sunshine, for which they received a Grammy nod.
With the release of the band's fifth album, 100 Lovers, the band returns to the epic settings of the Arizona desert with producer Craig Schumacher (Calexico, Neko Case) to create a new collection of haunting stories, with songs like The Man From San Sebastian delivering on their intriguing titles with enigmatic lyrics and cinematic soundscapes.
For 100 Lovers, DeVotchKa spent over a year refining their sound, taking multiple trips to the studio to craft twelve new recordings. The final product is the bands strongest album to date, combining the energy and pop verve of How It Ends with the lush arrangements of A Mad and Faithful Telling, filled with songs fans will love, memorable melodies to draw in new listeners, and driving beats that will slip seamlessly into their rousing live sets.1.The Alley

Magical Mystery TourSourced From the Original Master Tapes
Cut at Abbey Road Studios
Pressed on 180 gram vinyl
Containing some fantastic material from The Beatles' hippy heyday, including the lovely Fool on the Hill (with an endearingly amateurish tin-whistle solo), the delicately woven tapestry of Strawberry Fields Forever, the glorious anthem All You Need is Love and mad, surrealist epic I Am the Walrus, in which Lennon takes the concept of lyrical and musical nonsense and just explodes it all over the speakers. For an album of bits and bobs, there is genius in these grooves.
A team consisting of some of the best producers and engineers in the recording industry were brought together and would spend 4 long years mixing and mastering with some of the most state of the art recording equipment. Treating these records much like a science experiment, engineers ran extensive tests before copying the analog master tapes over into a digital format using 24-bit/192 kHz resolution, and carefully removing clicks, vocal pops and poor edits. Never altering the original songs themselves, just polishing them up a bit.1. Magical Mystery Tour

Can't Touch Us NowFour years on from the release of their Top 10 US album, Oui Oui Si Si Ja Ja Da Da, Madness return with Can't Touch Us Now. The Album's release sees the Nutty Boys in full flow with a collection of songs that stands alongside the best of their unique takes on modern life.
A typically eclectic collection (the group has long mastered the art of making disparate influences work under their knack for writing catchy pop hooks), Can't Touch Us Now was recorded at London's iconic Toe Rag Studio - a fitting venue for one of the English capital's most iconic bands. Co-produced by Grammy-winning producer Liam Watson (The White Stripes' Elephant) and the band's long-time boards-man, Clive Langer, Can't Touch Us Now was recorded in just three weeks and boasts characteristically wry observations on life, with songs the likes of 'Mr. Apples', 'Blackbird', 'Mumbo Jumbo' and the title track.
Part of Madness' brilliance lies in their ability to take situations specific to their environment and make them universally relatable: 'It Must Be Love', 'Embarrassment' and 'Tomorrow's Just Another Day' all resonate with a worldliness that fans from all over the globe have related to - and that's no surprise, given that the band themselves have looked beyond England, to Jamaica, for a large part of their musical inspiration. With the songs on Can't Touch Us Now road-hardened during a string of summer festival appearances, it seems that the album is set to, once again, remind fans that the self-proclaimed Nutty Boys are one of the finest, most erudite pop outfits that the world has seen.1.
