MadonnaMadonna's 1983 self-titled debut, produced by Reggie Lucas, collected some of her early 12 dance club hits (Everybody, Burning Up, Physical Attraction) along with the soon-to-be smashes Borderline, Holiday and Lucky Star. Everybody was her first single out of the gate, hitting Billboard's Disco chart in late 1982. The track, produced by Mark Kamins, topped out at #3. The double-sided 12 Burning Up/Physical Attraction followed, and also climbed to #3.
Finally, in 1983, Holiday burst onto pop radio, and the single became her first top 40 hit, peaking at #16 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was followed by Borderline (#10) and Lucky Star (#4). She's So Unusual (Awaiting Repress)Ranked 494/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
She Bop: 1984 Commercial Blockbuster Combines Mainstream Hooks, Self-Assertive Confidence, and Whimsical Attitude
A True Original: Lauper Bridges Rebellious New-Wave, Giddy Pop, and Girlish Vocals
Back on Vinyl for 1st Time in Decades: Mastered on Mobile Fidelitys World-Renown Mastering System and Pressed at RTI
Includes Top 5 Anthems Girls Just Want to Have Fun and Time After Time
Forget, for a moment, about the gypsy clothes, raspberry-pink hair, costume jewelry, and hyperactive behavior. No female artists debut better epitomized MTVs vivid heyday and the smart intersection of self-reliant female politics, savvy hooks, and vibrant imagery than Cyndi Laupers Shes So Unusual. Long before Lady Gaga, and before Madonna embraced any traits resembling punk, the New York native ushered in a new wave of commercial pop while flaunting an exuberant confidence that, overnight, influenced a generation to dye their hair and embrace life with newfound vibrancy. Girls, indeed, just wanted to have fun.
Mastered on Mobile Fidelitys internationally acclaimed mastering system and pressed at RTI, this Silver Label LP rescues the music from long-standing harshness and disadvantageous brittleness. Back on vinyl for the first time in decades, the multi-platinum 1984 blockbuster sounds completely anew, possessing crisper beats, a fleshed-out midrange, no artificial ceilings, and a clear alleyway to Laupers girlish voice. Finally, the sonics possess the wide spectrum of colors that flavor the songs.
Helmed by the anthem Girls Just Want to Have Fun, Shes So Unusual transformed pop culture by way of Laupers charismatic personality, whimsical attitude, lively performances, unique timbre, witty humor, and unabated passion. Throughout, shes a whirlwind of emotion and cyclone of spirit, tackling insouciant party tracks with the same verve she sings arresting ballads. And while for most it would be a deterrent, Lauper sculpts her chirpy, bop-friendly voice to her advantage, underscoring each songs combination of sentimentality and seditiousness.
With a voice that combined the cartoon soul of Little Eva and the wink-wink naughtiness of Betty Boop, Lauper may have backed away from the depth or urgency of the writers whose work she mainstreamed, but her transformation of their power into sheer pop was ultimately subversive giggling all the way, she incited legions of mall rats into orange-hair rebellion and a measure of self-assertion, wrote Paul Evans for The New Rolling Stone Album Guide, hinting at the records normally unseen depth.
Whether viewed as a subversive new-wave crossover statement or simply as a celebratory declaration of individualism (or, both), Shes So Unusual is an 80s landmark and influential harbinger of the role women would play in both rock and pop.

Music is the eighth studio album by American singer-songwriter Madonna, released on September 19, 2000 by Maverick Records and distributed by Warner Bros. Records. Following the success of her previous album Ray of Light, she intended to embark in a tour. However, her record company encouraged her to return to the studio and record new music before going on the road. After filming the film The Next Best Thing, she began working on her new album, with producers like Mirwais Ahmadzaï, William Orbit, Guy Sigsworth, Mark Spike Stent and Talvin Singh. Music has an overall electronic and dance-pop vibe. However, the album also contains elements of rock, country and folk, also including the use of vocoder on many tracks, such as Nobody's Perfect.
Upon its release, the album received universal acclaim from critics, who praised Madonna's collaboration with Mirwais Ahmadzaï, as well as the album's musical creativity, however criticizing Madonna's collaborations with William Orbit, despite calling them catchy. It was nominated for a total of five Grammys at the 43rd Grammy Awards, although it eventually won only one award. Music debuted at number one in over 23 countries around the world, and was Madonna's first album to reach the top of the Billboard 200 in 11 years since Like a Prayer (1989), being certified three times platinum the Recording Industry Association of America. Something To RememberSomething to Remember is Madonna's second greatest-hits collection, compiling a selection of the singer's ballads. Several of her biggest hits are included, including the number ones Crazy for You, Live to Tell, This Used to Be My Playground, and Take a Bow, as well as a handful of first-rate album tracks (a remixed Love Don't Live Here Anymore, Something to Remember, and three new tracks, most notably a version of Marvin Gaye's I Want You recorded with the British trip-hop group Massive Attack. Only two tracks on the album overlap with The Immaculate Collection, and the disc also marks the first appearance of This Used to Be My Playground and I'll Remember on one of Madonna's albums. Throughout the album, Madonna proves that she's a terrific singer whose voice has improved over the years. Not one of the tracks is second-rate, and the best songs on Something to Remember rank among the best pop music of the '80s and '90s.

Mighty Real: Greatest Dance HitsTwenty-five years after his untimely death at the age of 41, the iconic legacy of Sylvester, the "Queen of Disco," will be resurrected with "Mighty Real: Greatest Dance Hits," due out June 25 (international release dates vary) on Fantasy Records.
This collection will celebrate the life and music of the artist who once danced his way into the hearts and minds of the disco and LGBT communities.
A quarter of a century after his passing, Sylvester will make a fabulous debut back into a prolific time in the LGBT community just the way he would have liked it - through dance music. This 11-track release, available on CD and on double pink vinyl, will feature a number of original album tracks and 12" mixes that are rare or no longer available on CD, as well as the brand new remix of the iconic "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)" by Grammy-nominated remixer and DJ, Ralphi Rosario (Rihanna, Mariah Carey, Beyonce, Madonna).
As a dear friend of Harvey Milk and an icon to the LGBT community, Sylvester has long held a special place in music and socio-political history. Sylvester was not only one of the first disco stars to stand openly gay, but bravely crossed beyond the boundaries of race, gender and sexuality to become a proud figure of the gay liberation movement.
"Sylvester James was an unlikely star: an androgynous, cross-dressing, openly gay, African-American, falsetto-singing, unapologetically flaming man-diva influenced primarily by church women, black blues singers, drag queens, hippies and homos," liner notes writer Joshua Gamson said. "Like very few before him, and quite a few after, Sylvester rode his marginality right into the mainstream."
A Los Angeles local, Sylvester found his home in the vibrant subcultural scenes of San Francisco in the late 1960s. As the community around him became devastated with AIDS, Sylvester's music took on a sort of weary determination, becoming a call to live, to keep dancing and to keep loving.
Sylvester died on Dec. 16, 1988 and bequeathed royalties from the sale of his music to benefit two charitable organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area: the AIDS Emergency Fund and Project Open Hand.
"Decades later, even as strides have been made in the fight against the disease that has taken so many lives, Sylvester's music lives on, a call to be fabulous against the odds," Gamson said.
"Mighty Real: Greatest Dance Hits" was produced by Tom Cartwright and Chris Clough on Fantasy Records with liner notes written by Gamson, author of "The Fabulous Sylvester: The Legend, The Music, The Seventies in San Francisco."

When Macklemore declares his music is David Bowie meets Kanye sh*t, it's a bit of an oversell on the Bowie side, but then again, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring are also honored as influences during Ten Thousand Hours, the biographical highlight that opens the Seattle rapper's vibrant sophomore release.
These arty name-drops threaten to paint the album as more obscure than it is, but even as glitch electronica and Mad Rad member Buffalo Madonna strange up the breakup number Thin Line, The Heist comes off as instant, alive, and oh so welcoming. Chalk it up to Macklemore's playful and open lyrics (When I was in the third grade/I thought I was gay/Because I could draw, my uncle was, and I kept my room straight) or the album's not so secret weapon, Ryan Lewis, the producer who earns his co-billing with a George Martin or Dave Fridmann-sized sense of purpose and an Internet kid's sense of utilizing anything and/or everything. For the music industry takeover Jimmy Iovine with Ab-Soul as guest, Lewis' production is a mix of G-Unit gangster music and a Houston hip-hop trunk rumbler, while the pro-gay marriage highlight Same Love with Mary Lambert is supported by full-bodied piano and the sound of a bittersweet marching band, all of it familiar yet twisted through a laptop with hypnotic loops and catchy hooks coming out. Gold (feeling like 500,000 sold) is joyous and bright mini-electro that feeds the positive side of the soul, while Can't Hold Us comes with an irresistible bounce, both tracks being light, lovely, and in contrast to the numbers that deal with Macklemore's addiction issues and other obstacles.
These two talented young bucks can't be contained, and hearing them offer one memorable, meaty number after another makes for an exciting listen, but this is unfiltered freshness released on Macklemore's own label, so the concepts of restraint and focus take a slight hit, leaving the is-he-Eminem, is-he-Childish Gambino, or is-he-Grieves question with no clear winner. Here, he's a mix of all of the above with some distinctive qualities, and with Lewis putting that kaleidoscope style underneath, The Heist winds up a rich combination of fresh and familiar.

The Beatles 1967-1970
All Analogue Master From The Original Master Tapes
Picking up where 1962-1966 left off, the double-album compilation 1967-1970, commonly called The Blue Album, covers the Beatles' later records, from Sgt. Pepper's through Let It Be. Like The Red Album, The Blue Album was released in the wake of a pair of widely advertised quadruple-LP bootlegs, Alpha Omega, Vols. 1-2: The Story of the Beatles, which had appeared early in 1973. And like its companion volume, this set contains a mixture of hits, including singles like Lady Madonna, Hey Jude, and Revolution -- which had originally appeared only as 45s -- plus important album tracks like Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, A Day in the Life, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, and Come Together, as well as orphaned tracks such as the single versions of Let It Be and Get Back, which had never been on any LP before. The first two sides of the original double-LP edition carry listeners through the highlights of the psychedelic era, starting with Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane and up through Magical Mystery Tour, before returning to rock & roll territory on Lady Madonna, Hey Jude, and Revolution. The second LP skims three of the more popular tracks off of the sprawling White Album (aka The Beatles) and moves into the late singles (The Ballad of John and Yoko, Old Brown Shoe, Let It Be), plus single and album highlights from Abbey Road and Let It Be. As a prÉcis of the group's final 36 months, it's all mightily impressive, even if 1967-1970 misses several great songs. But like its predecessor, this set does capture the essence (if not the full range) of the Beatles' later recordings.

A two-volume set tying up loose ends, single releases and B-sides. But frankly, when your loose ends include 'Hey Jude', then it still probably qualifies as essential listening. There's a bit of filler here (nobody but a Germanic completist needs to hear 'Sie Liebt Dich') but there are a lot of absolute classics, especially on disc 2, which includes the barrelhouse 'Lady Madonna', the droning psychedelic 'Rain' (the whole of Oasis's career in one song) and Harrison's lovely 'Old Brown Shoe'. It ends with their final B-side, 'You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)'.
A team consisting of some of the best producers and engineers in the recording industry were brought together and would spend 4 long years mixing and mastering with some of the most state of the art recording equipment. Treating these records much like a science experiment, engineers ran extensive tests before copying the analog master tapes over into a digital format using 24-bit/192 kHz resolution, and carefully removing clicks, vocal pops and poor edits. Never altering the original songs themselves, just polishing them up a bit.LP1

WARB-ELE-1952xMarina and The Diamonds
Electra HeartMarina and The Diamonds second album, Electra Heart, is not so much a creative leap forward, more an Olympian pole-vault over the bar of talented-newcomer into the global amphitheater of a cultivated Classic.
Two years on from her top 5 debut The Family Jewels (300,000 copies sold), the self-styled avant-garde D.I.Y artist has detonated her own experimental past and landed feet first in the future with Electra Heart, a stunningly ambitious, seamless, cohesive and confident sonic pulsar spinning between electro-pop euphoria and come-down melancholia. The album is produced by a cache of old school and A-List producers: Dr Luke (Katy Perry) and Liam Howe (Sneaker Pimps) but mostly (9 out of 12 songs) Greg Kurstin (Lily Allen, Kylie) and Rick Nowels (Madonna, Stevie Nicks, Lykke Li). A hook-packed stunner with the sonic ambition of a one-woman Depeche Mode, her onetime theatrical vocals now effortlessly soar between spectral, commanding and towering power-pop, finding her vocal identity in an album about a loss of it.
Electra Heart is a thematic riot, a British Eccentric, 21st Century concept caper where the album title represents a series of female archetypes, not so much an alter-ego as a beautifully-constructed prism, through which Marina projects a series of meticulously-realized female characters as a foil for telling her story, the one about mismatched lovers.
Electra Heart marks the sophomore release from Marina and the Diamonds, aiming to make a big impact in the US as Marina breaks the mold with her Americana-ode to pop music and cultural stereotypes.1. Bubblegum Bitch

ReverieReverie came to fruition when Joe Henry and his fellow musicians convened in Henrys basement studio for three days of exploration. The result is an all acoustic album more full of life, from the birds chirping through the open windows to the ticking and shifting of the musicians, than any Henry has recorded.
And thats saying a lot: for more than two decades Grammy-winner Henry has produced some of the most celebrated names in music, from Ornette Coleman and Elvis Costello to Ani DiFranco and Madonna.
Working with his regular stable of musicians and guests including master guitarist Marc Ribot (Tom Waits, Elvis Costello), singer Jean McClain and organist Patrick Warren, along with a special appearance from recently produced Lisa Hannigan, Henry has produced another masterful set of songs.1.
