    Magic Windows, Magic Nights

The recording sessions with Guided By Voices producer, Todd Tobias, lasting less than two weeks in the freezing Northeast Ohio cold, showed the band's ability to work at a breakneck pace with pinpoint accuracy and culminated in the fifteen-song monolith release Magic Windows, Magic Night. Blending lo-fi cassette performances, urban NYC field recordings and tape samples with baroque orchestration and Tobias' high-fi analog indie production, Magic Windows, Magic Nights clamors with the noise of a band firing on all cylinders. Five's melodic songwriting often veers from languid to raging, and eclipses the band's 2008 Cassette debut, with tightened Mascis-style guitar melodies and Brian Wilson-style pop concision, while the gunfire drumming of Sustarsic and polytoned sub-frequencies of Shue coalese into a heavy slamming machine. Magic Windows, Magic Nights showcases a band who know the meaning of impermanence and transition, and know how to bridge the gap between oblivion and survival.

Although Astoria, Oregon is best known to multiple generations of pop-culture observers as the cinematic setting of the '80s cult classic The Goonies, the rugged riverfront city now has another distinction: as the home of the fab new pop-rock combo known as Holiday Friends. On its consistently uplifting debut album Major Magic, the spirited quintet-singer-guitarist Scott Fagerland and singer-keyboardist Jesse Wityczak, who share most of the band's songwriting duties, plus Scott's brother Jon Fagerland on guitar, keys and vocals, bassist Zack O'Connor and drummer Joey Ficken- deliver ten joyous new tunes that strike a decisive blow for the enduring values of infectious melodic hooks and emotional engaging lyrics.

After all the accolades from press and peers, what's a legendary
band to do? Forget the recording studio, rent out an abandoned
office space in the middle of the New Mexico desert, set up, plug
in and play REALLY LOUD. Starting with hardly a notion of the
outcome, by seven days later Deerhoof had found (you guessed it)
The Magic: a raw and refreshing 15-song wallop of an album about

    New Magic

Son Little, the singer and songwriter born Aaron Livingston, is the easygoing musical alchemist of our time. He is a conjurer, and much like those of his heroes Stevie Wonder and Jimi Hendrix, his songs are deconstructions of the diaspora of American R&B. Deftly he weaves different eras of the sound-blues, soul, gospel, rock and roll-through his own unique vision, never forced, always smooth, each note a tributary on the flowing river of rhythm and blues. And now, with his second full-length album, New Magic, he has delivered a profound statement, a cohesive creation that captures the diverse spirit of American music in a fresh and modern way.

The song that serves as the album's true centerpiece is Blue Magic, a Philly Soul inspired number deconstructed almost like a rap song or the best of production savants like J Dilla or Madlib, complete with chiming glockenspiel bells and old school female backing vocals. The song has the appeal of an instant classic. On the heels of his 2015 self-titled debut and the 5-song EP, Songs I Forgot, that came before it, Son Little found his reach steadily growing. His song Lay Down had been streamed over seven million times, he had toured the world with artists as diverse as Leon Bridges, Kelis, Mumford & Sons, Portual. The Man and Shakey Graves in addition to his own headlining runs, and also became a Grammy Award winning producer, earning a 2016 Best Roots Performance award for his work on Mavis Staples.

    A Kind Of Magic

Primarily functioning as the musical backdrop for the movie Highlander, Queen's 1986 release A Kind of Magic differs from their other motion picture soundtrack, 1980's Flash Gordon in that it features all fully realized songs and doesn't contain a single instrumental. Songs like the epic title track, Friends Will Be Friends and Who Wants To Live Forever helped Queen once again attain rock prominence around the world.

    In The Magic Hour

Aoife (pronounced EEE-fah) O'Donovan's debut solo album, Fossils, was released to critical acclaim and ended up on many "Best of 2013" lists from outlets like NPR Music, American Songwriter, New York Magazine and No Depression, among others. Aoife appeared on A Prairie Home Companion, NPR's Weekend Edition, SiriusXM The Coffee House and The Village. President Obama even exposed himself as a fan by including the track "Red and White and Blue and Gold" on his first official Spotify playlist in the summer of 2015. Since it's release, Fossils has sold more than 22,000 copies worldwide, and Aoife is poised to break through with her new album, In The Magic Hour. The songwriting process for In The Magic Hour coincided with the death of Aoife's grandfather, at age 93. She remembers him as a "gentle soul" in the small Irish village of Clonakilty where he lived. The lyrics on In the Magic Hour are infused with a sense of loss and mortality's dark certainty.

But the album is just as much an ode to Aoife's joyful childhood visits to Ireland. Aunts, uncles, grandparents and flocks of cousins would gather at the Clonakilty seaside to swim in the chilly ocean and sing together in the lingering Irish summer twilight. Aoife had not yet performed many of the songs live before arranging and recording them over the course of three sessions in Tucker Martine's (The Decemberists, Neko Case), studio in Portland, OR. "The whole recording process was really Tucker [Martine] and me taking these songs and building them from the ground up," Aoife says. The result is deliberate but not over-done, the freshness of the material intact. While In The Magic Hour rekindles the creative partnership with Grammy-nominated producer Martine, the album also highlights the fruits of Aoife's various career collaborations. Composer Gabriel Kahane, New York's string quartet Brooklyn Rider and musician Chris Thile all lend musical and vocal support, as well as I'm With Her band members Sara Watkins and Sarah Jarosz, plus many more.

    The Old Magic

Of Nick Lowe, NPR once observed, Few musicians get better with age, Nick Lowe is an exception. While it's undeniable that his last album garnered Lowe the best reviews of his career and his best one-week sales in the Soundscan era, there is little doubt that he has always been at the forefront of modern music. Be it his production work with The Damned, Elvis Costello, The Pretenders or his stone-classic solo albums Jesus of Cool or Labour of Lust, Nick has always set the standard for smart, switchblade-sharp pop music.

His latest album, The Old Magic continues Lowe's late-career evolution with arguably his best collection yet. Amidst urbanely insistent grooves (Sensitive Man), and spare-yet-imposing shuffles (Checkout Time), The Old Magic features three exceptional Lowe ballads: album opener Stoplight Roses, House for Sale and I Read A Lot. As is his custom, Lowe also peppers the album with three covers by Elvis Costello, Tom T. Hall and Jeff West that fit seamlessly with his originals. The Old Magic might be the album title equivalent of calling your shot, but for Nick Lowe it seems more a simple statement of fact.

    Bad Magic (Picture Disc)

    Limited Edition Picture Disc

Bristling with thunderous attitude, and some of the fiercest rhythms and riffs that'll assault your ears this year, Bad Magic demands that you fall to your knees and pray heartily that your senses don't get completely pulverized, because big-rig head crushers like the totemic and Motöranthemic "Thunder And Lightning" show that Motörhead is as strong, mean, loud, relentless, uncompromising and goddam heavy as ever. Drawing on their own vast catalog of road-warrior freewheeling rock'n'roll spirit, Bad Magic also strides confidently into some of the earlier attitudes of Motörmusic. There is the driving malevolence of "Choking On Your Screams" underscoring Lemmy in magnificently omnipotent vocal mood, "Electricity" carries a hefty chunk of punk attitude married with some of Phil Campbell's best lead work yet, and "Shoot Out All of Your Lights" screams devilish, greasy, biker-born-screw-you-and-yours attitude, Mikkey Dee's tribal drums pounding out a great path for more Kilmister proclamations. In this, their historic 40th year anniversary, Motörhead will also continue to gleefully deafen fans with a world tour, including a European Summer tour where they will debut brand new Motörclassic "Thunder & Lightning". The world might be in a state of turmoil and uncertainty, but Bad Magic is solid gold proof that you can always bet on Motörhead to deliver the greatest, leanest and meanest of goods through thick and thin.

The Magic Place is the third record from Julianna Barwick, and the first to be released by Asthmatic Kitty. This nine piece, 43 minute album is a cinematic journey through glacial pacing and drifting drones. The occasional icy down-plink of piano, Julianna's gorgeous churchhouse sigh of a voice, a swell of a dozen voices rising in harmony - this is music from the inside of the fortress of solitude, the work of a solitary creator, a message from a crystal palace of reverb and avant-choral bliss.

    The Magic Whip

The new album from Blur, titled The Magic Whip, started life in Hong Kong when the band had an unexpected break in touring in May 2013. It is released by Parlophone Records, 16 years since 13, the band's last record as a four-piece. The recordings for the band's eighth studio album began in Spring 2013 at Avon Studios in Kowloon. Damon Albarn, Graham Coxon, Alex James and Dave Rowntree spent 5 days jamming together and carried on with their live dates while the recordings were put aside and the group finished touring and returned to their respective lives. Dave resumed his day job as a lawyer and Alex returned home to his farm in Oxfordshire from where he writes a regular farming column in The Telegraph and hosts the annual food and music festival The Big Feastival with Jamie Oliver. Graham, who has released eight critically acclaimed solo albums to date, continued to work on his own material and, in 2014, Damon released his Mercury-nominated debut solo album 'Everyday Robots'.Then, in November last year, Graham revisited the tracks and, drafting in Blur's early producer Stephen Street (Leisure, Modern Life is Rubbish, Parklife, The Great Escape, Blur), he worked with the band on the material. Damon then added lyrics and the 12 tracks on The Magic Whip is the result.

    Animal Magic (Awaiting Repress)

Right, let's not beat about the bush - Bonobo's debut longplayer is, by popular consensus, 'the business'.

An awe-inspiring showcase of a young man's staggering musical ability, 'Animal Magic' was greeted with swoons of delight and sycophantic praise upon its release in July 2000. Its heart-meltingly lysergic melodies - all bellchimes, backwards vocals and haunting keys - weave an impenetrable gauze of sound that astounded practically everyone who heard it.

Bucking the late-90s reliance on sampling, Simon Green (the man behind the monkey) wrote, played, recorded and produced the entire record himself. The result is an album with such depth and breadth of emotional and melodic content that every track is a potential favourite. Little wonder, then, that 'Animal Magic' numbers among Tru Thoughts' all-time bestsellers.

"Anyone in search of the ultimate chill-out album should buy this debut" - The Observer

    Made To Love Magic

    Reissue

The rarities collection, Made to Love Magic, contains demos captured in 1968 (when Drake was studying at Cambridge University) as well as solo-acoustic sketches of later songs - and a newly discovered piece, Tow the Line, which Drake scholars believe is one of the last things he committed to tape. The song, recorded in 1974, was found, unlabeled, at the end of a master tape when original engineer John Wood was mixing this album.

Tow the Line, which lasts 2:16, is classic Drake, as simple as Pink Moon or any of his later works but almost more compelling because of its assertive, driving rhythm. Drake was an unerringly precise guitarist, and Tow the Line is an excellent showcase for his devices: He outlines the verses using a tapestry of delicate, yet tense, descending chords, and then chops out blunt, almost growly blues references on the refrain.

There are other delights on Magic, among them a solo treatment of River Man (from Five Leaves Left) without the string orchestra; the somber, anguishing love ode Clothes of Sand; and a relaxed journey through Rider on the Wheel. Far more interesting than typical demos, laced with the shadowy moods some artists spend years chasing in studios, these casual performances suggest that there was never anything casual about Drake's art: Even when he was just jotting down some idea, he couldn't help infecting it with that strange, mournful magic.

    New Magic (Blue Vinyl)

    Pressed On Blue Vinyl

MMW dip into their archives to present a collection of recordings documenting their first-ever acoustic tour in 2007. The set, stretching out over five expansive tracks, captures the three intrepid improvisers exploring the telepathic hookup and deep groove sensibility that has defined MMW since its inception in 1991.
