    Sparkle Hard

The fact that Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks have thrived, rather than simply endured, over 17 years and delivered six albums of buzzy, sub-cultural significance, constitutes an impressive legacy. The challenge with album number seven is one that any successful band with integrity faces: how to safeguard that legacy and hold on to their identity without rehashing old ground (unthinkable), and also say something meaningful while (crucially) having fun doing it? With Sparkle Hard, Malkmus, Mike Clark (keyboards), Joanna Bolme (bass) and Jake Morris (drums) do exactly that. It's light 'n' breezy, head-down heavy, audacious, melancholic and reflective, goodtime and bodacious, and it pulls off the smartest trick: it's both unmistakeably The Jicks and - due to the streamlining of their trademark tics and turns, plus the introduction of some unexpected flourishes (Auto-Tune! A fiddle! Guest vocalist Kim Gordon! One seven-minute song with an acoustic folk intro!) - The Jicks refashioned. If 2014's Wig Out At Jag Bags balanced the lengthy prog workouts of Pig Lib with Mirror Traffic's sparky pop moments, then Sparkle Hard bears less obvious direct relation to what's come before. It also has turbocharged energy and enthusiasm by the truckload.

    Wig Out At Jagbags

Probably the most underrated guitar player of his
    generation - Rolling Stone

Wig Out At Jagbags is Stephen Malkmus' sixth
solo effort with the Jicks and finds the former
Pavement leader (alongside Joanna Bolme, Jake
Morris & Mike Clark) at his most playful and
joyous in recent memory. The album, written
in Berlin & recorded in Belgium with longtime
Pavement and Jicks associate Remko Schouten is
a looser, more unbridled affair that gathers those
trademark guitar moves and lyrical acrobatics into
an amalgam of what SM himself calls: "Projected
Imaginings of ROck and ROll from the freezing
north, rendered by West Coast stalwarts and a
    Dutch Uncle".

Malkmus, having lived in Berlin for the past 2
years, combines the manical wizadry of Can
(who Malkmus covered for Record Store Day last
year) and the West Coast imaginings of Jefferson
Airplane. Malkmus also cites "Cologne Germany,
Mark Von Schlegel, Rosemarie Trockel, Von Sparr
and Jan Lankisch, Can and Gas. Imagined Weezer/
Chili Peppers, SIc Alps, UVA in the late 80's, NYRB,
    Aroma Charlottenburg, inactivity, Jamming, Indie
guys trying to sound Memphis, Flipper, Pete
Townshend, Pavement, the Joggers, The NBA,
home life in the 2010's " as inspiration.

As it spans nods to the embryonic days of college
rock on "Lariat", (see those Bongwater and Sun
City Girls shoutouts), the galloping guitars and
horns on "Chartjunk" and arrives at the rallying
coda of "Surreal Teenagers", Wig Out At Jagbags is
a portrait of an an American master stretching out
& showing no signs of slowing down.

    The Secret History, Vol. 1

The strangest thing about Pavement? Not that there were ever many non-strange things about Pavement? Even though they made their era's finest rock albums, the albums only told half their story. Pavement also made some of the Nineties' best albums that *never* happened. Until now.

Pavement made five proper album-as-albums: Slanted and Enchanted (1992), Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain (1994), Wowee Zowee (1995), Brighten The Corners (1997) and Terror Twilight (1999). Each has its own sound. Each has its own legend. But each of their official albums has a shadow album-and it's usually as strong as the album that actually *did* come out. It's time for the world to hear the albums Pavement could have made, if they'd been a little less ambitious about music and a little more ambitious about the music business. If they'd been the kind of band to sweat the legacy. But if they were that kind of band, would they have written so many great songs? Much less *these* great songs? No.

Matador is finally releasing a series of these shadow albums. The first, naturally, is *The Secret History Vol. 1*, collecting the songs that got away during the era of Slanted and Enchanted, which Stephen Malkmus, Scott Kannberg and Gary Young recorded on the cheaper-than-cheap in January 1991. *Secret Slanted History* collects gems from Peel Sessions ("Kentucky Cocktail," "Circa 1762") and seven-inches ("Baptist Blacktick") as well as live slop from the first European tours, with Mark Ibold and Bob Nastanovich in the fold. Some are outtakes from *Slanted*-imagine leaving these tunes off your first album, when as far as you know or imagine, it's your *only* album. These tracks (some of which had never been rumored among Pavement freaks) came out on the 2002 *Slanted and Enchanted* reissue. But they've never been separately available as an album in their own right, and many of them have never been on vinyl before.

The rarities collected here could have been-or maybe even should have been-cobbled together into a quickie stopgap album, a Slantedsequel.

    Hardcore Friends

Eric Slick and Dom Angelella are infinitely busy-Slick plays drums in Dr. Dog and Angelella writes songs for DRGN KING-but they finally orchestrated the time, nearly a decade into the bands life, to record their debut full-length album, Hardcore Friends. Recorded in five days by Joe Reinhart (Hop Along, Joyce Manor) and Kyle Pulley at The Headroom Studios in Philadelphia, Hardcore Friends spans the last ten years of their friendship. Hardcore Friends features unshakeable guitars and genuine lyrics that invoke the likes of Stephen Malkmus and Archers of Loaf. Lithuania is just as capable of writing a dawdling and quiet song, "Coronation Day," showing off their softer side with acoustic guitars, synthesizers, and Angelella's mollifying vocals. The album closer "Hardcore Friends," features guest vocals from friends Frances Quinlan (Hop Along) and Rachel Browne (Field Mouse).

    Wild Flag

Wild Flag is a Portland, Oregon and Washington, DC based quartet consisting of Carrie Brownstein, Rebecca Cole, Mary Timony and Janet Weiss. The members of Wild Flag have played in numerous and notable bands including Sleater-Kinney, Helium, Quasi, The Minders, Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, and others.

The four musicians who make up Wild Flag have known one another for well over a decade; playing together felt almost inevitable. Brownstein and Weiss were in Sleater-Kinney and toured with Timonys band Helium on numerous occasions. Brownstein and Timony played in a side project called The Spells. Rebecca Coles Portland-based band The Minders was a frequent opener for Sleater-Kinney. Weiss and Cole play together in the 1960s garage-rock cover band The Shadow Mortons. After collaborating on a score for a documentary, the ease with which they worked together proved infectious and promising. Wild Flag was formed.

In April of 2011, they went to Sacramento, California, where they recorded their self-titled album with engineer Chris Woodhouse at the Hangar. All tracks were recorded live except for the vocals.

    Foil Deer

Speedy Ortiz said they would get the flowers themselves. What a lark! What a plunge!

When considering Massachusetts' Speedy Ortiz, that line from Virginia Woolf comes to mind. Not only for the obvious echoes to DIY, a form and function that's characterized the band's nascency, but in the proto-feminist undertones driving much of their sophomore album, Foil Deer. "I'm not bossy, I'm the boss," Sadie Dupuis sings on "Raising the Skate," invoking in spirit one half of the Carter-Knowles clan and echoing the other's wordplay. And wordplay makes sense, considering Dupuis-the band's songwriter, guitarist, and frontwoman-spent the band's first few years teaching writing at UMass Amherst. She's drawn to the dense complexity of Pynchon, the dreamlike geometry of Bolaño, the confounded yearning of Plath-all attributes you could easily apply to the band's 2013 debut Major Arcana, which fans and press alike have invested with a sense of purpose and merit uncommon in contemporary guitar rock.

The group, including Mike Falcone on drums, Darl Ferm on bass, and new addition Devin McKnight of Grass is Green on guitar, have spent the last year on an almost endless cross-continental touring jag, tagging along with the likes of The Breeders, Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks, and Thurston Moore. That shift into full-time musicianship brought with it an attendant reordering of priorities when it came to songwriting, and the band members' lives in general. They would get the damn flowers themselves.

Dupuis wrote much of Foil Deer at her mother's home in the Connecticut woods, where the songwriter imposed a self-regulated exile and physical cleansing of sorts, finding that many of the songs came to her while running or swimming alone. "I gave up wasting mental energy on people who didn't have my back," she says. "Listening to our old records, I get the sense I was putting myself in horrible situations just to write sad songs. This music isn't coming from a dark place, and without slipping into self-empowerment jargon, it feels stronger." Many of the songs deal with a similar sense of starting over, editing out the unnecessary drama. "Boys be sensitive and girls be, be aggressive," she sings on "Mister Difficult."

And while their debut album was recorded on the fly, Speedy Ortiz spent almost a month in the studio on Foil Deer. Falcone's drums are taut, mechanistic; Ferm's bass ranges from the aggressive rattle of an AmRep classic to smoother, hip-hop inspired lines. McKnight, meanwhile, lends spacier, textural riffs to complement Dupuis' wiry, melody-driven guitar style. "The demos for our songs have always had tons of small details and production experimentation, but we never had any money to pay for more than a couple days in the studio, so the songs came out very live-sounding and guitar heavy," Dupuis says. It was recorded and mixed at Brooklyn's Rare Book Room with Nicolas Vernhes (Silver Jews, Enon, Deerhunter), with the record mastered by Emily Lazar (Sia, Haim, Beauty Pill), lending a more polished sound and a pop sensibility that will stand out to existing fans and new converts alike. For all the lyrical complexity and guitar-based excursions Speedy Ortiz have built their reputation on to this point, Foil Deer has a sense of light-footed fun. What's the point of doing things yourself if you're not going to enjoy the trip?

    Deep Sleep

Sleeping Bag sounds different, you guys. On their third LP, "Deep Sleep", Dave
Segedy (the group's drummer, songwriter and primary vocalist) has taken the band
into heavier, more epic territory. The sunny jangling guitars and fun whistle choruses
are gone; obliterated in a full on fuzz-guitar assault. Dave sings, "I want to free the dog
that I am." and he means it.

Segedy's signature pop songwriting style is still in full effect, now brought to life by
guitarist Tyler Smith and bassist Glenn Meyers. Tracks like "Hush" and "Wrestle"
exemplify Sleeping Bag's honest, bedroom-pop approach and Malkmus-deadpan
vocal delivery, but compared to the sunny disposition of the previous records "Deep
Sleep" sounds downright tuff. Drenched in distortion & reverb, the album culminates
with the nine-minute closer, "The Portal" - an epic shred-fest, equal parts My Bloody
Valentine & Weezer "Only In Dreams". It's quite an affair.

    Major Arcana

On their debut full-length, Western Massachusetts' Speedy Ortiz manages a bit of magic by conjuring the spirits of classic American indie rock, while twisting those ghosts into new shapes. It's easy to hear the influences of Helium, Jawbox, and Chavez on this album, as well as nods to their contemporaries including Grass is Green, Pile, and Roomrunner. Sweet vocal harmonies run up against gnarly
distortion, aided by basic, chunky bass parts and heavy, fill-laden drums.

The album was recorded in a few days in November at Justin Pizzoferrato's (Dinosaur Jr., Chelsea Light Moving) studio, Sonelab, a huge space in an old factory in Easthampton, Mass. The sessions went from very early in the day until very late at night, with the band taking its time to experiment. Pizzoferrato's collection of old distortion pedals were utilized on both the record's guitars and vocals.

The theme of the occult and the supernatural runs deep through Major Arcana, inspired by singer-guitarist Sadie Dupuis' reading on black magic. Dupuis' sometimes knotty and abstract lyrics bring to mind fellow wordsmith Stephen Malkmus, while referencing horror film tropes, chemistry, and neuroscience. Major Arcana's literal translation is "major mysteries," a phrase from tarot cards. "I don't write in a narrative way and am more concerned with use of language than meaning," Dupuis says, "so I like the open-endedness of the title and the way it invites interpretation."

    Women Of Your Life

    White Colored Vinyl

Stripped-down, unblighted, bedroom pop songs... about girls. Women Of Your Life is the intimately facile sophomore album from indie-slackers Sleeping Bag.

The Bloomington, Indiana based trio is spearheaded by Dave Segedy, who is the group's drummer, songwriter and primary vocalist (that's right: a drummer who writes and sings all the songs!). Specializing in simple and honest songwriting, Malkmus-deadpan vocal delivery, and unusually addictive melodies, Sleeping Bag craft songs that are at once familiar and fresh.

The band's debut s/t album was released on Joyful Noise in August 2011, receiving praise from Under The Radar, Impose Magazine, Village Voice, RCRD LBL, and My Old Kentucky Blog. With their second album, the trio have matured in the ways one might expect: songs are a bit longer, lyrics a bit more personal, and arrangements more developed. But all of Sleeping Bag's signature elements are well represented
throughout: the heartfelt (In The Pocket, Still Life), the playful (Allison Cole, Saturday Night) and the unbelievably catchy (Soccer Ball, Walk Home).

Segedy's eortless melodies, accompanied by the distinctively jangling guitar work of Lewis Rogers and the tastefully minimal bass of David Woodru, combine to form a sound that summons the energy and earnestness of 90s rock, while sidestepping throwback territory. Familiar inuences are organically reconstructed into relevant,
captivating pop. These are instantly accessible songs which gain surprising depth with each obsessively repeated listen.

Twenty-Five For The Rest Of Our Lives

Los Angeles quartet The Henry Clay People are thrilled to announce the release of their new album Twenty-Five for the Rest of Our Lives. Set for release on TBD Records, the album is a thrilling and sweaty thirty minutes of teenage restlessness, quarter-life malaise, and adult resignation. Twenty-Five for the Rest of Our Lives sees not only the return of the band's original line up, but songwriters and brothers Joey and Andy Siara rediscovering and redefining their punky roots, allowing them to craft their most urgent, bratty, and melancholic record to date.

"We wanted to finally make the record that our sixteen year old selves would have been excited about," says Joey. "Unfortunately the only way to do so was to live for the last 13 years and get some adult suffering under our belt. Now we can direct our misguided teenage angst at our failed 20's."

With songs such as the rambunctious The Backseat Of A Cab, the 90's guitar slack of Hide, the skater brat inspired The Fakers and the punk revival of EveryBandWeEverLoved, Twenty-Five for the Rest of Our Lives is a record dealing with compromised dreams and empty bank accounts, for and by the high school Descendents devotee turned college Malkmus-minion. LP includes full album on CD and poster.

"The Henry Clay People specialize in raggedy power chords, barreling piano, and desperately boyish vocals, what Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers would sound like if they'd taken temp work and listened obsessively to Crazy Horse." - SPIN

"Remarkable set of classic-sounding indie-rock with clear echoes of Pavement, the Hold Steady, the Replacements and early Built to Spill, but they find their own voice with detailed songs that split the difference between sardonic and heartfelt when describing the music scene, living in debt and working part-time, transforming everyday subject matter into raging, celebratory anthems for slacker rock 'n' rollers and other folks just trying to make ends meet." - KEXP
