    Rock N Roll Singer

    First Pressing On Vinyl

Rock 'N' Roll Singer is the debut solo album from
Sun Kil Moon/Red House Painters' Mark Kozelek.
The seven song album was released on CD in 2000
while Kozelek's final album with his previous band
Red House Painters was in limbo with record label
mergers. Rock 'N' Roll Singer features three
    original songs, three completely deconstructed
AC/DC covers (these versions are not found
elsewhere) and a John Denver remake. Rock 'N'
Roll Singer has sold over 25,000 copies in the U.S.
This is the first pressing on vinyl.

    Old Ramon

Old Ramon, the sixth Red House Painters album, recorded in the
fall of 1997 through the spring of 1998, was intended for release
that summer. But the mega-major label merger catastrophe that
left hundreds of bands homeless spared few. Red House Painters
looked for a brief moment like survivors, but subsequent delays
eventually turned into permanent layoff. Old Ramon sat in limbo
and grew into legend as another great, lost album only the
privileged few would ever properly hear. They've unintentionally
put the wait back into the term "long-awaited."

Singer Mark Kozelek kept busy with a series of other projects. He
served as producer for Take Me Home: A Tribute to John Denver.
As archivist for the 4AD Red House Painters Retrospective album,
assembling rarities and live tracks. As solo artist with several
tracks on the Shanti Project album, and two albums Rock 'n' Roll
Singer and What's Next to the Moon, a collection of AC/DC songs
reinterpreted. As live performer, touring the United States, United
Kingdom, Spain, Sweden and his first ever shows in South Korea.
As film scorer for the independent film Last Ball. And, finally, as
actor in Cameron Crowe's critically acclaimed Almost Famous.

But while playing a musician in a movie-Kozelek appears as the
bassist of Stillwater in Almost Famous-was an exciting diversion,
it also pointed out the absurdity and irony of the situation. He'd
been writing and performing his own music since the 1980s, with
Red House Painters since the early 1990s. He was a musician, not
just someone who might play one on TV.

With Old Ramon sitting on the shelf, it was like reading a book
with a chapter missing. Kozelek had written most of the album
throughout 1996 and 1997. There were "Between Days" and
"Wop-a-din-din," written during the months he stayed in Oaxaca,
Mexico about his time there and his cat waiting at home in San
Francisco; "Cruiser" written on an airplane ride from Los Angeles
to San Francisco about a friend he'd met during the John Cale
tour; and "Golden," a song in tribute to John Denver, written and
recorded in a single day during December of 1997, just a few
months after Denver's tragic death. "Michigan" and "River" had
been road-tested on the band's previous tour.

The album, in fact, had come together with a good feeling, reuniting
the band with their old friend and engineer Billy Anderson,
who'd worked on their earlier records Down Colorful Hill and the
two self-titled releases (Rollercoaster and Bridge by their covers).
Sessions in San Francisco, Mendocino, California and Austin,
Texas resulted in several hours' worth of music being recorded.
The band had spread out and worked up various arrangements for
a majority of the tunes. Sadly, a twenty-minute version of "Michigan"
fell to the cutting room floor.

But the ten songs packed onto Old Ramon (the title comes from a
Spanish children's book that caught Kozelek's fancy) well
represent the band that will take to the road for the first time in
several years with extensive touring throughout the United States
and Europe. Once freed from their major label commitments,
reputable independent labels bid for the band's services. This,
however, is the album exactly as it was intended-untouched-three
years to the month of its completion. Good news:
    The wait is officially over.

    We Should Be Dead Together

You can feel the act of creation in every note or creak or cadence and it is intoxicating. The results are not overtly folk or psych or pop or rock yet they appeal to all of those senses at once. It is odd to have an 11-track EP. Even more strange is to organize it as one track followed by 10 tracks, as is done on the sleeve, especially when it plays out in a more traditional order in practice. But everything about Savaging Spires seems to go against convention. A band that All Music likened to Animal Collective and the Incredible String Band jamming on found instruments at The Residents' house, with Mark Kozelek as guest vocalist never ceases to surprise. This continues their habit of producing amazing results in front of a microphone, as their self-titled debut was considered by many to be an instant cult classic. Recalling the glory days of pastoral psychedelia according to The Wire and it found heavy rotation in the US on KALX, WFMU, WNYU, KVRX and many others.

    Country Sleep

Welcome to the sound of Winston Yellen and Night Beds, who in one stunning ten-track debut album Country Sleep, have shown that there is plenty of life left in the world of American music if you have the voice, the songs and the gift to touch hearts and souls. Think of a space between Mark Kozelek (Red House Painters/Sun Kil Moon), Gram Parsons and the dreamier side of My Morning Jacket; a heavenly place of pure country soul, touched by an endearing innocence and honesty that can only come from someone still in their early twenties.

    A Friend In The World

Portland based Lovers fuse intimacy and empowerment into a modern atmosphere of honesty, new feminist humor, and rhythmic complexity. The result is at once confident, tender and romantic. The follow-up to their best-selling 2010 release Darklight, A Friend in the World is a rich engagement of acoustic and electronic extroversion and introspection--an uplifting ride into uncharted territories of the heart and mind.

Recorded at Portland, Oregon's beloved Type Foundry with Dylan Magierek (Thao Nguyen & Portland Cello Project, Mark Kozelek, Starfucker) and Adam Selzer (She & Him, M.Ward), and mixed by Andy Lemaster (Michael Stipe, Bright Eyes).

    Descended Like Vultures

Rogue Wave's 2005 album Descended Like Vultures is now back in print on vinyl! Historians, rock critics and sports announcers have all spent plenty of time waxing poetic about the sophomore slump, but don't waste any time pulling out that reference for Descended Like Vultures, Rogue Wave's second album for Sub Pop. While the album defies expectations as much as it defies the odds, singer/guitarist Zach Rogue knows the score: "That's the whole thing with the title," he admits. "It' like waiting for the other shoe to drop this perception that everyone around you is going to turn their back."

A related adage is that you have your whole life to write your first album and a year to write your second, but Rogue had anything but writer's block after completing Out Of The Shadow and seeing it re-released by Sub Pop in 2004 (the original, limited pressing was released on the band's own label in early 2003). In fact, the group entered the studio at the end of March with more than enough material for a full-length (three albums worth, to be exact).

"I've wanted to record records for years and years, so really, it's like someone opened the door for me to get started," explains Rogue. "I feel like Descended Like Vultures is actually the beginning this is really where we start." Though Rogue assembled the Oakland, CA, quartet which includes fellow multi-instrumentalists Pat Spurgeon (focus: drums), Gram LeBron (guitar) and newest member Evan Farrell (bass) in late 2002, Descended Like Vultures is the first time the band's leader has ever made a record with a whole group in the studio. The band spent 10 days with Bill Racine (who also produced Out Of The Shadow with Rogue) at Supernatural Sound in Oregon City, OR, resulting in the creation of 11 tracks that journey through a dreamy landscape inspired by several decades of classic rock and pop (from Fleetwood Mac to Neil Young to My Bloody Valentine.)

The Mark Kozelek-esque "California" and the XTC-flavored "Catform," which sports Rogue's most dazzling vocal performance to date both feature cold yet inspired examinations of human nature informed by Rogue's experiences on the road. For the first time as an entire unit, Rogue Wave went out of its way to create a free-flowing album that includes equal amounts of tension, release and resolution. In the process they have made a brilliantly layered, expertly crafted album that changes shape with repeated spins.

Drifting Your Majesty (Out Of Stock)

The driving force behind Desertshore is the partnership between guitarist Phil Carney and keyboard player Chris Connolly. The former has played with both of sadcore king Mark Kozelek's bands, Red House Painters and Sun Kil Moon, and the latter has a classical background, though he also loves the gauzy, ethereal indie rock sounds that came out of England's 4AD label (which was also home to Red House Painters). With third man Dave Muench on drums and a couple of guests (including Kozelek), Carney and Connolly made Desertshore's all-instrumental debut album a place where all their varied influences intertwine.

The album's title offers a hint about the mood of the music -- Drifting Your Majesty maintains a haunting, dreamlike quality throughout its 14 tracks. Though these pieces are not without dynamics, they remain on the impressionistic, ethereal side, whether it's an intimate duet between Connolly and Carney that's taking place, or something more fully fleshed out with rhythm section and second guitar. As the tunes gently rise and fall, they roll rather seamlessly through a wide array of styles, blending psychedelia, post-rock, and international touches. Sometimes these tracks evoke the mellower, more contemplative circa end-of-1969 Neil Young or Grateful Dead improvisatory expeditions (Desertshore are, after all, a Bay Area band). At other points, there are echoes of a more contemporary post-rock sound à la Mogwai or Explosions in the Sky, and occasionally, Connolly and Carney dip into some Middle Eastern-tinged modalities, suggesting some quality time spent listening to early world music-inclined '60s guitarists like Peter Walker and Sandy Bull. Drifting Your Majesty manifests a moody, meditative feeling, but is never monochromatic.
