Martha And The Vandellas'
Heat Wave (Awaiting Repress)Import
Born in Eufaula, Alabama, in 1941, the 3rd of 11 children, Martha Reeves moved with her family to the Motor City - Detroit, Michigan - when she was less than a year old. Like so many other R&B and soul singers of the era, she was raised on gospel and started singing in the church, but before long the secular interests of doo-wop and R&B won out and by the age of 18 she had joined her first vocal group, The Fascinations. In 1960 she joined the group that would eventually become Martha & The Vandellas (named after Martha's childhood street, Van Dyke, and her singing idol, Della Reese). After filling in on backup vocals for Marvin Gaye's classic "Stubborn Kind Of Fellow", the group signed their own recording contract with Motown's Gordy label. By the following year, they were having massive chart success with this album's title track, "Heat Wave", and "Quicksand" (both of which were written by the new songwriting trio of Holland-Dozier-Holland). Compiling many of those early hit singles in 1963, Heat Wave is a quintessential piece of the Motown Sound that every record collection needs.1. Heatwave

The Mamas And The PapasIn their brief but eventful reign as one of America's hippest and most popular recording acts, the Mamas and the Papas-Denny Doherty, Cass Elliot, Michelle Phillips and main songwriter/sonic architect John Phillips-created a uniquely captivating brand of smart, harmony-laden pop that was consistently inventive and innovative, yet effortlessly commercial.
Although their hitmaking heyday lasted less than three years, these trendsetting California dreamers left a long-lasting mark on popular music, releasing a series of hit singles and classic albums that remain deeply ingrained in the pop-culture consciousness four and a half decades later. Now, Sundazed Music brings the Mamas and the Papas' much-requested, long-out-of-print second and third albums back to the marketplace in LP editions that preserve their timeless brilliance for the ages.
These beloved '60s classics have been lovingly restored by Sundazed Music to their original glory, on high-quality vinyl LP. Exchange Sessions Vol.1Kieran you probably know from his more popular moniker of Four Tet or from his time with the seminal post-rock instrumentalists Fridge. Reid was the drummer on Martha & The Vandellas' Dancing In The Streets. Along with his Motown sessions, he's recorded and performed with James Brown, Miles Davis, and Fela Kuti, and he had a lengthy tenure in the Sun Ra Arkestra, along with putting out his own solo records. This meeting of rhythmic minds between Hebden and Reid is a free jazz odyssey sure to melt minds as much as knock down barriers. It's quite a compelling listen with melodic music textures and steady rhythms. The whole affair breathes and swings, daddy-o. Look for Volume II in the spring.1. Morning Prayer
