    You Are Free

Originally released in 2003, You Are Free is the critically acclaimed sixth full-length release from Cat Power aka Chan Marshall. Although the epic 14-song set includes guest appearances from Dave Grohl, Eddie Vedder and Warren Ellis, it's the richly complex vocal stylings and minor-key poetics of Marshall that are front and center here. Exploring the nature of relationships and fame, from the anguished, layered "Speak to Me" to the searching irony of "He War," You Are Free is at turns evocative, intense and beautifully beguiling. Alien Lanes

Originally released in 1995 on Matador Records, their first for the label, Alien Lanes is the 8th overall full-length from lo-fi legends Guided By Voices. One of the band's most popular, Alien Lanes makes an art out of pairing anthemic hooks with muscular and melodic rock 'n' roll guitars, almost exclusively accomplished here in brief blazes of brilliance and beauty.

In this short span of time, Reatard has cranked out more memorable songs than some acts do in their whole careers -- Pitchfork

For the six months leading up to this release, Matador has put out a limited edition 7-inch by Memphis boy wonder Reatard. Each generated more attention, but was released in a progressively more limited run, starting with 3,500 copies for the first and ending with 400 copies for the sixth. This package collects all six (excluding the Deerhunter track on #4), plus one extra song. Each tune is a perfect snarling pop-punk gem.

    Dub Egg

Following up on last year's acclaimed limited-edition LP for Mexican Summer, the Austin-based quartet The Young (guitarist/vocalist Hans Zimmerman, bassist Jason Costanszo, guitarist Kyle Edwards and drummer Ryan Maloney) make their proper debut with a crafted, explosive record best summed up as "classic Matador meets classic rock."

After a year sharing the stage with Sic Alps, Kurt Vile, Pierced Arrows, Endless Boogie and other masters of modern rock guitar, their meticulous interplay has become both uncanny and unstoppable. Dub Egg is a shimmering, incandescent approach to classic forms that nobody could have imagined from these guys a couple years ago. The album carries echos of Crazy Horse, Television, Quicksilver Messenger Service, the Dream Syndicate as well as the aforementioned.

Recorded in a woodland cabin, all-analog and self-produced, this exceptionally beautiful sounding rock album, to be released on Matador Records, is the sort of expansive, guitar masterclass (never at the expense of terrific songs, mind you) they've only hinted at previously.

Started by Kid Millions and Bobby Matador of Oneida, People of the North is an ongoing but sporadic outgrowth of that restlessly experimental Brooklyn assemblage. It has always included Kid and Bobby, and usually other members of Oneida as well. While there are no clearly defined boundaries separating POTn from Oneida, it might be fair to say that the music is more staunchly devoted to minimalism, repetition, improvisation, and sternness than the wide-ranging efforts of the big brother band.

    Love Comes Close

Love Comes Close is the debut full-length from Philly/New York quartet Cold Cave. Matador is now reissuing the instantly sold-out self-released album from August of 2009. The warm, rich synth pop sounds are laced with equal measures of romance and nihilism and somewhere in these realms of negative hiss and out-of-body bliss, there is a peak awaiting all who enter. Singer/keyboardist/songwriter Wesley Eisold is joined by Caralee McElroy (ex-Xiu Xiu), Dominick Fernow (Prurient) and Sarah Lipstate (ex-Parts & Labor, Noveller). Eisold himself served time with hardcore punk legends American Nightmare/Give Up The Ghost and Some Girls.

    Palo Santo (Expanded Edition)

Austin's Shearwater debut on Matador with a completely refurbished edition of their critically acclaimed 2006 album. They re-recorded five of the eleven tracks and added new cover art, deluxe packaging in the form of a gatefold digipak inside an O-card, plus a bonus CD containing eight additional tracks, all for the price of one CD. The music is a soaring, vast, multi-instrumental song-cycle. The vocals and songwriting recall bands as diverse as Roxy Music/Bryan Ferry and late Talk Talk, but this is unabashedly rock music, anchored by Thor Harris's mighty Bonhamesque drums.

    Moon Pix

Cat Power's stirring 1998 album Moon Pix, her fourth overall, continued Chan Marshall's evolution from indie-rock queen to reflective, accomplished songstress. The addition of The Dirty Three's Mick Turner and Jim White here also adds new depth to the proceedings as they gracefully complement Marshall's compelling, intricate guitar lines and gently insistent vocals to fine effect. Moon Pix is a soulful collection of songs that begins to truly uncover the raw power and emotional vulnerability that would inform Marshall's work from here on out. Electr-O-Pura

Electro-O-Pura is the classic 1995 album from Hoboken, NJ's favorite sons Yo La Tengo that brilliantly bridges the band's underground adventures of yesteryear with the keen sense of melody and mood that would inform many of the group's subsequent releases. The dynamic 14-song set is equally turbulent and subdued, emotionally dark and atmospherically light, yet altogether engaging and ambitious, no better exemplified than on the up-tempo pop number Tom Courtenay and the slow-building Blue Line Swinger. For his second studio album and proper Matador debut, Memphis prolific punk wunderkind Jay Reatard has moved beyond his roots and recorded an album chockful of irresistible melodies, the songs cascading with joyous hooks. He would not be Jay Reatard, however, if there wasn't a certain aggro negativity, and the song titles and lyrics do much to undercut the pop sensibility: I'm Watching You, Hang Them All, Can't Do It Anymore, Wounded, It Ain't Gonna Save Me.

The perfect summer album for disaffected youth across the country, Jay will be trekking from coast to coast all summer with his ex-In The Red labelmates The Oh Sees and TV Smith (of the Adverts).

Between The Times And The Tides

Between The Times And The Tides is the first proper, song-oriented studio album from Sonic Youth guitarist Lee Ranaldo. Recorded with longstanding Sonic Youth producer John Agnello, the album is a shimmering and melodic tapestry of rock sounds.

Ranaldos trademark alternate-tuning guitar work is at the forefront here, but it is amplified by brilliant leadwork from Wilcos Nels Cline on every track. The all-star lineup also includes Sonic Youths Steve Shelley on drums, Alan Licht on guitar, and John Medeski on keyboards. There are also cameos from original Sonic Youth drummer Bob Bert and producer and instrumentalist Jim ORourke.

Between The Times and The Tides is equal parts smart, confident and loose in a manner that recalls some of Matador's favorite rock n' roll projects yet sounds like a fantastic new band that was apparently being assembled right under our noses. With lyrics plumbing Ranaldos childhood and adolescence, its a fascinatingly approachable song collection from one of rocks greatest guitarists. Includes MP3 coupon.

25th Anniversary Reissue Of Influential Landmark Album

    Certified Gold In 1998

Remastered By Emily Lazar At The Lodge

"Maybe the greatest work of traditional American indie rock that
anyone has ever made. It's also probably the best road-trip album
of its generation and the signal of a rare talent's arrival. It deserves
to be celebrated. Let's do that." - Stereogum

"A landmark of foul-mouthed, compromised intimacy, a tortured
confessional, a workout in female braggadocio, and a wellspring of
penetrating self-analysis and audacity." - The New Yorker

"Exile is just one perfect song after another" - Rolling Stone

"The genius of Liz Phair's debut is its wonderful simplicity. Phair
was as straightforward as you could get-- her music was incredibly
catchy, rootsy pop, fueled by timeless, original melodies and lyrics
whose honesty was refreshing and, occasionally, shocking." - Pitchfork, #5 in the list of top 100 albums of the '90s

2018 marks the 25th anniversary of Liz Phair's
landmark Exile in Guyville album. On May 4th,
Matador Records will reissue the album on vinyl
and CD. Re-mastered by Emily Lazar at The Lodge,
the album is set for a remembrance worthy of
its greatness. In addition to the straight reissue,
Matador is also releasing Girly-Sound To Guyville, an
extensive vinyl box set to celebrate the anniversary.

Originally released in 1993, Exile In Guyville is
a seminal album and a feminist landmark. Its
legendary status has only grown over the years.
It's continually included in countless lists Rolling
Stone's 500 Greatest albums of all time + 100 best
albums of the 90s, Pitchfork's Top 100 albums of the
90s, etc. Numerous essays and think pieces have
been written about it and the number of accolades
    piled on is endless.

Since the release of Exile in Guyville, Liz Phair has
continued to defy expectation and break barriers.
She has released five albums and is currently
working on a new one. She has also composed
music for television shows and received awards for
that work. In November, it was announced that she
would be fulfilling a longtime dream to be an author,
having received a two-book deal with Random
House. Her first book will be called Horror Stories
which focuses on "heartbreak, motherhood, and
    everything in between".
