    Mating Call

    Special Vinyl Reissue

This November 1956 date marked the first recording of the deeply moving ballad "Soultrane," as well as the first exposition of the lovely line "On a Misty
Night" (based on "September in the Rain"), a number Dameron would later explore himself in other contexts.
This is not a typical Tadd Dameron date in that his music is not played by a large ensemble or even a quintet. He is represented as a composer but not as
an arranger; yet, his pungent themes come through strongly, carried by the searing, probing tenor saxophone of John Coltrane.

    As I Call You Down

What started off as a casual friendship established while skating the streets of Santa Monica, CA quickly transcended into Ben Harper, Dhani Harrison and Joseph Arthurs newest musical venture, Fistful Of Mercy. The trio formed in early 2010 and wasted little time before laying down tracks for what would become the bands debut full-length entitled, As I Call You Down.

With a musical career spanning over nearly two decades and having ten albums and two Grammy awards under his belt, Ben Harper (later known as Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals) is no stranger to the music world. Having met FOM band-mate Dhani Harrison while skating, the two were unaware of each others background in the industry for months. Once realized, collaborating seemed to make perfect sense and thus Fistful Of Mercy was formed instantly.

Written, produced and recorded in Harpers studio, As I Call You Down is comprised of nine songs complete with soulful harmonies and blues-infused folk guitar seamlessly blended with an indie rock backbone. As I Call You Down effortlessly crosses through genre defining borders and is sure to please fans of both Ben Harper and Dhani Harrisons previous work, while welcoming new listeners with open arms.

    The Big Mango

"Sam Shalabi has raised the bar for modern psychedelic music by composing this epic suite for his 20-piece Land of Kush orchestra. Utilizing African, Middle Eastern, Indian, jazz, rock, and folkloric sources, The Big Mango weaves a seamless montage of styles in a transcendent way that is rarely, if ever, achieved. A singular cohesive statement built around four key tracks written for four different female vocalists it will demand your attention from start to finish." - Alan Bishop (Sun City Girls/Sublime Frequencies)

Osama (Sam) Shalabi moved to Cairo in 2011, settling in an apartment one block from Tahrir Square, in the midst of Egypt's 'Arab Spring'. Shalabi describes The Big Mango, his new and phenomenal work for his Land Of Kush big band, as "a love letter to Cairo"
framed by "the beautiful, surreal madness of the city as joyous, horrific, historical events were
unfolding". The music was also inspired by time spent in Dakar, where in Senegal's music scene Sam experienced parallels to another of his central aesthetic and political touchstones, Brazilian Tropicalia, in the sense of a "positivity, complexity and radicalism in art that was also
playful and joyous and wasn't necessarily part of a 'revolution' but seemed to be a form of innate radicalism". In tandem with the relative openness of Dakar's Islamic society - with the much more prominent role and presence of women in public and private life and the relaxed physicality and sensuality of the culture in general - Senegalese music offered a powerful counterpoint and feeling of promise for Egypt's own future. "The Big Mango" is one of the many nicknames for Cairo, but for Shalabi it also evokes the succour and sensuality of southern hemispheric music more generally, in this relation to broader socio-political movements.

MontrÉal remains Shalabi's home base and the city to which he briefly returned towards the end of 2012 to reconvene the troupe of players that have helped him realize his large-scale works under the Land Of Kush moniker. Working through The Big Mango score with
these local musicians culminated in two ecstatic live performances and a recording session at MontrÉal's Hotel2Tango studio. This third album by Land Of Kush is arguably the group's most focused and immediately satisfying.

For Shalabi, gender and Arab culture has been a central theme, one he took up explicitly on the previous Kush album Monogamy (2011), and which similarly drives The Big Mango, where once again a series of female vocalists drawn from MontrÉal's indie rock community anchor the work and convey what in most of the North African Arab world remains a
profoundly unrealized though burgeoning spirit of gender equality, participation, expression and liberation. This promise is at the heart of Shalabi's "love letter".

The Big Mango opens with a bubbling Fauvist stew of balafon, flute, electronics and vocalizations which abruptly segue into solo piano and saxophone improvisations - an introductory set of musical mating calls that invoke the album's deeper conceptual and formal preoccupations. The libidinal energy of rock n' roll is then re-situated in a heterodox Middle Eastern context as the album's centerpiece songs unfold: "The Pit", "Mobil Nil",
"Drift Beguine" and "The Big Mango" each marked by propulsive female vocal performances from Ariel Engle, Katie Moore, Elizabeth Anka Vajagic and Molly Sweeney respectively.

Underpinning each of these singers is some of Land Of Kush's s most melodically and rhythmically compelling music, conjuring a post-modern psychedelia that is truly sui generis. The band delivers the grooves and soloists unleash excursions more fluidly than ever; for many of these players, it's the third time around embracing Shalabi's music, getting inside the spirit of the score, and following his conduction. In combination with the peaking intensity and electricity of Sam's compositional vision, The Big Mango coheres, sparkles and soars: a distillation of the sonic trajectory Land Of Kush has been charting for the past six years.

On his second leader album for ECM - following on from the prizewinning Gefion - Danish guitarist Jakob Bro continues to refine his trio project, with its emphases on melody, sound, space, layered textures and interaction. The rapport between Bro and Thomas Morgan (Bro calls him "my musical soul mate") has become something extraordinary, and often guitarist and bassist develop improvisational ideas in parallel. There's a historical aptness, too, in the choice of Joey Baron as the band's new drummer, for Bro first encountered Morgan when the bassist was playing in Baron's band a decade ago On Streams Joey Baron dives into the music's detail with obvious pleasure.

This recording features five new Bro pieces: "Opal", "Full Moon Europa", "Shell Pink", "Sisimiut" and "Heroines" (heard in both a trio version and a particularly lovely solo version). Completing the album's repertoire is the freely improvised "PM Dream", dedicated to the late Paul Motian. Jakob's approach to melody acknowledges the influence of Motian, and both Bro and Morgan played in the late drummer's ensembles.

Have a question about this product? Please email our audio advisor or call 1-877-929-8729 with any questions or concerns regarding your equipment purchase.

Offering a unique combination of unsurpassed comfort,
state-of-the-art design, and naturally beautiful sound,
AudioQuest's first headphone, NightHawk, has been
lovingly featured in the pages of magazines and websites
as far-reaching as Stereophile, Rolling Stone, CNET, Wired,
Head-Fi, Digital Trends, The Verge, and many more. This
is evidence of the intensifying convergence between the
high-fidelity and high-technology worlds, and testament
to NightHawk's uncanny ability to captivate and inspire a
diverse audience of thinkers, builders, engineers, and, of
    course, music lovers.

While NightHawk's many innovative design elements-
Liquid Wood earcups, biomimetic sound-diffusing grilles,
and high-performance solid-conductor cable, to name just
a few-have impressed listeners worldwide, many have
expressed interest in different paint finishes, more versatile
    cables, and closed-back designs.

AudioQuest takes the first of many steps toward satisfying
those interests with two new around-the-ear models:
    NightHawk Carbon and NightOwl Carbon.

NightHawk Carbon is a more sophisticated,
more mature version of the original. It boasts all of the
same exciting refinements found in NightOwl-improved
performance, greater comfort, two pairs of earpads, a far
more durable cable with mic and smartphone controls,
enhanced look and feel -all while
retaining its predecessor's remarkably low distortion and
    fatigue-free sound.

    Acoustic Refinements

    • Modified internal parts: Tighter tolerances reduce air
leakage for improved airflow and lower distortion
    • Two sets of earpads: Protein Leather Boost Pads seal
tighter for better isolation and slightly enhanced treble
clarity; Microsuede Pads breathe freer for greater comfort
      and slightly reduced bass impact
    • Improved plugs: High-purity Tellurium Copper (TeCu)
base metal for smoother surface, higher plating quality,
better mating contact, and, consequently, less noise

    Ergonomic Refinements

    • Improved headpad: Genuine leather headpad with
stitched detailing for enhanced comfort, more luxurious
      look and feel
    • Improved cable: Shorter (4.25ft) length for easier use
at the desktop or with mobile devices; flexible, nonbraided
      jacket increases durability, eliminates kinking,
      minimizes microphonics; robustly engineered and
      rigorously tested strain relief further increases durability;
discrete microphone and smartphone controls enable
phone calls and playback functions (Play, Pause, Skip)
      without compromising sound quality

    Cosmetic Refinements

    • Luxurious finish: Porsche Carbon Grey Metallic highgloss
paint meticulously applied via multistage process
    • Improved inner presentation: Includes microfiber
pouches for headphones and accessories for safer,
      simpler travel

Of course, all of the advanced design elements that
made the original NightHawk such a success are carried
over into the improved models. NightHawk Carbon and
NightOwl Carbon share their predecessor's pistonic
drivers with biocellulose diaphragms, compliant rubber
surrounds, and true voice-coil formers. The patented splitgap
motor remains unsurpassed in its ability to reduce
intermodulation distortion. The earcups are fabricated
from the same revolutionary Liquid Wood material, which
affords acoustically optimized support beams and carefully
applied damping. The patent-pending suspension system
allows the earcups to move freely, accommodating heads
of almost any shape or size, while effectively decoupling
    the earcups to counteract resonances.

Thus, NightHawk's exceedingly low distortion, unrivaled
comfort, and naturally detailed sound have been
enhanced in every meaningful way. With the new semiopen
    NightHawk Carbon and closed-back NightOwl
Carbon headphones, you can listen longer, later, and with
greater pleasure, enjoying even deeper immersion in your
favorite music, movies, videos, and games.

The closed-back NightOwl Carbon further advances
the state of the headphone art, replacing NightHawk's
sound-diffusing grille with an intelligently designed
aperiodic damping system for excellent isolation of both
external noise, and ensuring privacy for the listener and
    those nearby.

Hidden beneath the central circular portion of NightOwl's
earcups, a vent runs along the perimeter of each dome
and exits through a hidden airflow-resistive port. Thus,
unlike other headphones that use a sealed enclosure,
NightOwl is designed to effectively relieve the buildup of
pressure, allowing the drivers to breathe freely, ensuring
that any impulses quickly return to an innocuous resting
state-with no ringing, oscillation, or resonance.
Further, we've implemented several closely related
acoustic, ergonomic, and cosmetic refinements, each of
which seamlessly complements the whole, delivering
improved performance while elevating the overall user
    experience.

The First Cartridge Designed Specifically for VPI Tables

When two great minds like Harry Weisfeld of VPI and Peter Ledermann of Soundsmith get together, anything is possible. The result, in this case, is the VPI Zephyr by Soundsmith, the first cartridge to bear the VPI logo and the first cartridge optimized for all the unique parameters of VPI's JMW unipivot tonearms. The Zephyr is specifically designed to reduce azimuth smear, a distortion artifact created by unipivot tonearms and eccentric records.

The VPI Zephyr is incomparable when mounted to a VPI JMW tonearm. An extremely faithful tracker, the Zephyr suspension allows the tonearm to work its magic, revealing a whole new level of performance from the combination. The Zephyr's warm tonal balance clearly complements any VPI table, its ingenious construction matching VPI's own exceptional design.

"Peter Ledermann is one of the best cartridge designers, making some of the most musical cartridges in the world. I wanted a cartridge that sounded like his [$4,500] Sussuro to mate perfectly with the VPI Classic, both sonically and physically. Basically, I wanted the sound of the Sussuro at a much more reasonable price, built specifically for the Classic. The Zephyr fits the bill. It really sounds wonderful on the Classic. I set one up and it sounded incredible right away. It's a low compliance low output cartridge, with the smoothness of a reel to reel tape."

-- Harry Weisfeld, Owner and Lead Designer of VPI

A brilliant melding of technologies, the Zephyr is a hybrid design, with using the true elliptical stylus and lightweight aluminum cantilever from SSM's own Carmen and a trickle-down of the suspension and motor assembly from the Sussurro. This unique internal damping system provides proper transmission of energy through the entire moving system, creating a proper mechanical impedance match between cartridge and tonearm. This gives the Zephyr unparalleled speed, resolution and dynamic range with a gorgeous tonal balance to complement a wide variety of music.

The VPI Zephyr is a heavy weight cartridge at 10.27Gms and has low compliance making it best suitable for use with JMW tonearms. Output is 2.2mV, so the Zephyr works well with most MM phono preamps. Works with arms from 8Gms to 30Gms effective weight. All Soundsmith cartridges are Made in the USA.

    Moving Iron Design

A Moving Iron cartridge design has both the magnets and the coils fixed in place. A very low-mass and extremely precisely wound iron cross is affixed to the cantilever/stylus assembly and placed between the magnets and coils; as the iron cross moves in the magnetic field it generates signal voltage. Since only the iron cross moves, more coil windings (higher output) and heavier magnets (more powerful) may be used without penalty. Other advantages to the MI design are very low moving mass (greater resolution) and superior channel separation (better imaging).

AmpsandSound Products Are Handmade In Small Batches and Go Through Extensive Quality Control

The Hudson is a partial horn-loaded three-way loudspeaker system. Utilizing a direct radiating 15" woofer for low frequencies, and modern high-efficiency compression drivers mated to state-of-the-art horns which cover the all important midrange and highest frequencies, these big horn, small form loudspeakers offer the bass response, efficiency, dynamic capabilities, low distortion, and scale of much larger designs in a much smaller enclosure.

The Hudson began life as a design project which attempted to marry the virtues of direct radiating bass with the largest horns possible. Initially, the Hudson was a two-chassis design. After a great deal of testing, and experimentation with different cabinet designs, Ampsandsound were successful in our quest to create a true full-range speaker system operating from 34hz - 20khz in a single enclosure.

Its compact size makes it easier to install in most rooms and minimizes room interactions. The Hudson offers a delicate balance of scale, tonal accuracy, and rich detail in a design that will appeal to audiophiles who desire all of the positive attributes of horn-loaded designs but without the issues of size and room interaction that are inherent to many designs.

The loudspeaker features a sophisticated, hand-wired crossover network, which utilizes high-order filters, and large air-core inductors for low signal loss. If the heart of the Hudson is its horns and midrange, the crossover represents its cerebral cortex. Ampsandsound spent countless hours on the crossover, in order to create a state-of-the-art design that minimizes frequency overlap, and achieves phase coherence and perfect time alignment.

All three crossovers are hand-made and built to the same rigorous standards as our amplifiers and loudspeakers, utilizing Hyper-litz inductors and low Q capacitors. Each combined crossover weighs more than twenty-two pounds and is unlike anything you've seen or heard in horn-loaded loudspeakers.

The Hudson's bass section utilizes a 15 woofer in a direct-radiating configuration that is front-ported to minimize interaction with front walls. Through the use of FFT analysis, ampsandsound has carefully built an inert cabinet that features strategic bracing and dampening. As a result, the Hudson is capable of high output with minimal excursion, and greatly reduced levels of distortion over conventional designs.

The heart of the Hudson is its large CNC-cut midrange horn, which utilizes a hybrid tractrix flare, providing controlled horizontal dispersion and limiting vertical dispersion to reduce room interactions. The midrange horn is mated to a 2 large-format midrange compression driver with a 4 voice coil. The combination of a large, precision-made wood horn with a large throat and large midrange compression driver has resulted in a midrange that is tonally accurate, yet rich with detail. The midrange is smooth, fast-sounding, and easy to listen to for hours.

The tweeter combines a 1 compression driver coupled to conical-tractrix hybrid horn providing exceptional polar responses without dips and peaks associated with other horn designs. The Hudson's tweeter offers both great extension, detail, and a true sense of airiness; which allows the loudspeaker to create a large and deep soundstage even when placed close to the wall behind it.

The Seneca is AmpsandSound's nod to studio monitors. Inspired by the flat response and dynamic range of the best studio monitors from TAD and JBL, the Seneca is a 2way horn loaded monitor. They've combined a massive 15" woofer for effortless bass and 2" beryllium compression driver provides for lighting fast transient, wide bandwidth and ultra-low distortion.

The Seneca like the Hudson is a partial horn-loaded loudspeaker system configured as an ultra-wide bandwidth 2way. The foundation of the Seneca is a direct radiating 15" woofer for low frequencies, providing usable bass into the 35hz range and crossing to the Mid-Horn @ 500hz. The Seneca mates a modern high-efficiency compression driver to Elliptical traxtrix horn. The reduction of a crossover point and driver increases coherence without sacrificing high frequency information. The concept of the Seneca is to have big horns, state of the art crossovers and drivers into the smallest form factor possible; and yielding bass response, efficiency, dynamic capabilities, low distortion, and scale of much larger designs in a much smaller enclosure.

The Seneca had long been utilized by ampsandsound's founder in his personal system due to its more relaxed presentation. The core design was revisited with the development of the Hudson. Now paired with our newest crossover design and utilizing one of the most a calmed mid ranges, the Senenca was transformed into a loudspeaker capable of life like realism. Gone was the reference to a good sounding speaker, but now music was described as hearing the artist just feet away from you; as if you were at the counsel in the studio and they were playing to just you.

Its compact size makes it capable of being installed into even small most rooms, minimizes room interactions. Front ported and horn loaded reduces back wall interaction. The Seneca offers dynamic range, life like scale, tonal accuracy will appeal to audiophiles who desire all of the positive attributes of horn-loaded designs but without the issues of size and room interaction that are inherent to many designs.

The Seneca features a state of the art hand-wired crossover network, which utilizes high-order filters, and minimal driver lover lap, through use of large air-core inductors for low signal loss. If the heart of the Seneca is its horns and midrange, the crossover represents its cerebral cortex. The Seneca is art though design, providing detail rich rendering without coloration. Its crossover minimizes frequency overlap, and achieves phase coherence and perfect time alignment. Its crossover is hand-made and built to the same rigorous standards as our amplifiers and loudspeakers, utilizing Hyper-litz inductors and low Q capacitors. Each crossover weighs more than 15 pounds and is unlike anything you've seen or heard in horn-loaded loudspeakers.

The Seneca's bass section utilizes a 15 woofer in a direct-radiating configuration that is front-ported to minimize interaction with front walls. Through the use of FFT analysis, ampsandsound has carefully built an inert cabinet that features strategic bracing and dampening. As a result, the Hudson is capable of high output with minimal excursion, and greatly reduced levels of distortion over conventional designs.

The heart of the Seneca is its large CNC-cut midrange horn, which utilizes a hybrid tractrix flare, providing controlled horizontal dispersion and limiting vertical dispersion to reduce room interactions. The midrange horn is mated to a 2 large-format midrange compression driver with beryllium diaphragm. No need for a tweeter with a midrange capable of extending past 20khz and providing a rule flat midrange. The combination of a large, precision-made wood horn with a large throat and large midrange compression driver has resulted in a midrange that is tonally accurate, yet rich with detail. The midrange is smooth, fast-sounding, and easy to listen to for hours.

Fateful encounters at Cleveland bars rarely lead to musical mythology, but SomeKindaWonderful have a different kind of story to tell.

A three-piece featuring Jordy Towers (vocals/lyrics), as well as Matt Gibson (guitar) and Ben Schigel (drums), the genre-bending group came together after Towers became a casualty of the major label system. Once signed to Interscope as a solo act, he refused to become yet another faceless persona and the label left him hanging on the vine. Towers knew it was time for a reset and headed to Ohio to re-examine his life.

"Im not the type to be defeated easily," says Towers. "You know, most people move to LA to make it, but I had to leave LA to find my path."

In January 2013, Towers took a trip to visit family in the suburban Cleveland town of Olmstead Falls (pop. 9,000). It was there that he fatefully crossed paths with Gibson and Schigel. While the local musicians were just intending to just grab some beers at a local bar, they found much more than they had anticipated when they came across Jordy.

"We were basically a band without a lead singer and he was a lead singer without a band," says Schigel. "We headed back to our studio the night we met and, literally three hours later, our first song Reverse was done."

To call "Reverse" the product of fate is an understatement. Endlessly catchy, the song feels both modern and classic, nodding to 60s soul and contemporary R&B with the dynamic range of big-room pop-rock and cinematic emotion. Its structure, which features Towers unraveling a backwards narrative with a cadence that merges rap and soul, provides a novel lyrical framework to a unique sound.

"Its an R&B soul rock record," says Towers. "It sort of mirrors my move from LA to Cleveland. That path is reversed from what youd expect. Nothing is deliberate. Just like how we met, its natural and all about the music. I still cant believe I met my musical soul mates at a bar in Ohio."

FOR JAG PANZER, TEAM SPIRIT IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN ANYTHING ELSE. WITHOUT TEAM SPIRIT, GUITARIST MARK BRIODY WOULD NO LONGER SEE ANY REASON FOR CONTINUING THE BAND.

We're like a family, we've all known each other for many years, he says and looks back at the years between 2011 and 2013 when Jag Panzer were on the brink of calling it a day. Two band members quit and there was little interest in hiring new people and starting over. Introducing new musicians would have been tough, so we decided to disband. But then the American power metal act's strong fan base made itself heard, causing the spark to be rekindled. Briody: We had a lot of interest in our early albums, so my band mates soon noticed that people were still listening to Jag Panzer, that the audience was still there. We started talking on the phone more and more. Some excellent gig offers arrived so we decided we should get back together. What a stroke of good fortune, after all now the public can look forward to an accomplished comeback album. The Deviant Chord is a veritable metal manifesto and consists of ten awesome songs featuring all those typical Jag Panzer strengths that the band's fans have come to appreciate.

Together with band members John Tetley (bass), Harry 'The Tyrant' Conklin (vocals), Rikard Stjernquist (drums) and Joey Tafolla (lead guitar), who has returned to the fold, Briody has recorded an album that impresses in every respect and that benefits from the outstanding qualities of all five band members. John does our 'quality control', meaning that he makes sure every song wedo is the best it can be. Harry is a musical genius. He's been singing since we were kids, he's very skilled in vocal arrangements and vocal recording techniques. This skill makes him a very big contributor in the songwriting. Rikard is all about drumming. He's been drumming since he was a small child and has never stopped. He grew up living all around the world and he has always been in a band. Joey is the classic lead player in every sense of the world. He has amazing skill on the guitar plus an outstanding stage presence. His playing makes every song better.

    Unholy Savior

Hailing from the southern edge of Finland, BATTLE BEAST were founded in 2008 and soon established themselves with their trademark of pure crunching riffs, high screams, blistering solos and strong choruses. Taking the best elements of traditional heavy metal, the sextet is never afraid to add its own flavour to the recipe. After winning the 2010 Wacken Open Air "Metal Battle", and shortly after Finland's "Radio Rock Starba" competition, BATTLE BEAST soon caught the attention of Nuclear Blast. The worldwide release of the highly acclaimed debut album "Steel" in January of 2012 and a successful support tour with fellow Finns and label mates NIGHTWISH followed. September 2012 saw the original singer, Nitte Valo, leaving the band, to be replaced by a beautiful new front beast Noora Louhimo as they embarked on a tour with SONATA ARCTICA. With the refreshed line-up and an ever-growing hunger, BATTLE BEAST continued their march of success with their eponymous sophomore release in May 2013.

Following the success of "Battle Beast", charting at an amazing #5 in their native Finland and cracking the German Top 100, the band embarked on an extended European tour alongside German metal band POWERWOLF in late 2013 and then hit the road in Sweden and Norway opening for German metal institution U.D.O. Having spent the year playing headlining shows in their native Finland, as well as invading some of the biggest festivals in 2014 (among them the renowned Loud Park in Japan, German Metalfest and Sabaton Open Air in Falun, Sweden), plus supporting their German labelmates ACCEPT during their Finland tour in September, BATTLE BEAST now return to what they do best: to take it to the next level! "I thirst to go further as a human being and the music on this album represents a part of the ongoing spiritual journey - that's what I tend to I call it - which is my road onward. Music-wise the songs have been expanded to a wider area as an effort to call out emotions close to those I myself had during the times of birth of these songs," commented guitarist & vocalist Anton Kabanen about the upcoming new BATTLE BEAST album. "Unholy Savior" has been influenced by everything the band has been facing during the past months and clearly displays their increased hunger to succeed as a band.

Trying to explain the topics of the third BATTLE BEAST record, one will have to go deeper as the songs lyrics were born through an emotionally violent and bloody struggle, that main composer Anton Kabanen was going through at the time: Questioning his whole existence step by step, wondering if his dream had betrayed him. "Unholy Savior" reeks of death, agony, pain, hate, confusion, fear and insecurity, but it speaks of deep gratitude, longing, consolation and love. "The album had to be done this way - through emotional hell. Having transferred these things and emotions into songs I feel that I'm ready to move on. But like always, I wrote songs about the series Berserk, as well, and the reason behind writing songs about that particular series is that I can strongly relate to that, especially to certain characters and to their way of thinking and feeling," Anton adds. While with their previous album the young Finns did all the recording, producing and mixing themselves, "Unholy Savior" was produced by Anton Kabanen and co-produced by keyboardist Janne Björkroth and mixed by Matias Kupiainen at 5by5 Studios. Mastering was once again done by Mika Jussila at Finnvox Studios and the actual recordings took place at Sound Quest Studio and JKB Studios. "Unholy Savior" will be released on January 09, 2015. On the very same day BATTLE BEAST will return to the European roads, along with the band that has been supporting them since day one. Swedish metal heroes SABATON did not only invite the band to play at their very own Sabaton Open Air, but also featured a cover version of BATTLE BEAST's 'Out Of Control' as a bonus track on their current charting success "Heroes". Prepare yourselves for the return of the beast!

NEW REGA FONO MC PLAYS THE PERFECT PARTNER

Having recently launched the new Ania moving coil cartridge, Rega has set their minds to the perfect pairing of phonostage. Fono MC is crafted to be that partner, giving users an ideal phono pre-amp that matches Ania's electrical characteristics perfectly. Housed in a sleek new case that matches the look of the 2017 Brio amplifier, Fono MC makes a great shelf-mate too. The sound of Fono MC is quiet, detailed, insightful, dynamic, and well-timed.

While Fono MC has the ideal settings for Rega moving coil cartridges, it is fully adjustable ensuring that its plays very well with pretty much any other MC cartridge on the market. With 2 gain, 2 capacitance, and 4 resistance settings, it can be finely tailored to suit your cartridge's needs and your listening tastes.

Borrowing heavily from its big brother Aria phonostage, Fono MC uses low-noise, high-impedance FETs that minimize negative interactions from the cartridge. RIAA equalization is handled by MUSE op-amps, similar to those in the Brio amp. High-quality polypropylene capacitors are used in the signal path for excellent linearity. The casework is aluminum that best shields the sensitive internal circuits. Power is supplied by a 24VAC wall-wort, further minimizing negative interactions and noise.

    Simone Felice

Over the course of a year, this Catskill Mountains-based artist found the most deeply resonant places in which to play guitar and sing, settings that were as haunted in their rafters as he felt in his bones: a barn near his house, a church in London, an abandoned high school building by the Hudson River. What he created in these hushed, hallowed places is music that could be called folk but that has running through it a ghostly gospel-like feel. Occasionally helping him realize his vision were his brothers and former band-mates in The Felice Brothers and his friends from Mumford & Sons.

    Back To The Front

Explaining the relevance and influence of ENTOMBED is probably as superfluous as pointing out why Slayer rule, Lemmy is bigger than God and Dio the greatest loss in metal history. A legend is a legend. Fullstop. F**k off!

If you still require a proper explanation that is less shot from the hip, well let us start with this: The Swedish Death Metal forefathers and genre innovators have inspired tons of bands all around the globe with their invincible trademark sound. However, as the band's last album "Serpent Saints - The Ten Amendments" dates back to 2007, there is definitely more than a good reason for a bit of catch-up and ask why it took so long to finish the band's superb 10th opus, programmatically titled "Back To the Front", vocalist extraordinaire L-G Petrov states:

""Serpents " was a fairly good album but a little weak compared to previous works and the distribution wasn't that great yet we continued playing shows throughout the past years but never really got going with new songs. At some point we decided that it was time for a new album, so we sat down and played riffs that we had from before as well as many new riffs and started putting them together which really sparked our motivation. That really gave us a push! We feel that this is the best album so far in many years and I think you can hear it on the album!"

Thematically, the will and determination to back up such words with fantastic songs is reflected in the powerful album title and part of the concept of the record as guitarist Nico Elgstrand describes:

"A lot of the album is about being at war in different ways and struggles/shortcomings of mankind, so we felt that "Back To The Front" fitted really well. It has a military reference obviously and we also feel like a platoon (ha ha, a small platoon) that has been behind the frontlines for a long time anxious to get back into battle. Not mean and lean but rather fat and bored and really keen on getting back to what we do best, which of course is to kill! Metaphorically speaking needless to say, ha ha. Also it is a very direct way of saying we've been away for way too long, we know and that we will now aim to stay at the front until the friggin' battle is won! The cavalry has finally arrived if you will (without horses though, ha ha)!"

Well spoken, Sir, yet expectations will be incredibly high on this one as ENTOMBED's roots and legacy goes way back into the year 1987 when they formed under the name NIHILIST. In 1989 the formation changed its name to ENTOMBED and together with Morbid (for whom singer LG played drums), Treblinka/Tiamat, Grave and Dismember, ENTOMBED/NIHILIST established themselves among the earliest bands to forge the immortal Swedish death metal sound that became really popular and unique due to its punkish roots and especially that chainsaw guitar sound, today inseparably linked to terms like "Skogsberg", "Sunlight Studio" or just "Stockholm sound". Inspired by such diverse acts as Autopsy, Motörhead, Discharge or Kiss, over the years ENTOMBED did not shy away from thinking outside of the coffin resulting in a style some fans called Death'n'Roll but in the end it was, is and will be just a band with a style and impact entirely their own.

So, what awaits the listener on "Back To The Front"? Produced by Roberto Laghi (In Flames, Hardcore Superstar) at Studio Bohus (Abba, Europe) in KunÄlv, it's 666% true to the ENTOMBED everybody loves. While not falling for total regression back to the early classics "Left Hand Path" or "Clandestine", it is a total bone-crushing opus that will have fans of all periods cry tears of joy and even the most stubborn fan of the early days join in shame. "The goal was to have riffs that felt fresh and exciting, to make an album that felt old school as well as fresh and up to date, showing who ENTOMBED are today," L-G puts it quite simply and Nico continues: "I thoroughly enjoy the fact that I find it super hard to pick 2 or 3 songs as the best of it, because i really like 'em all. I think that they all have something new and fresh yet it feels very old school in some way. "Kill To Live" with its surprising ENTOMBED-intro turned out very cool and the track also has an almost cinematic yet classic metal feel to it, dunno why, but it just invigorates me. "Second To None" kinda makes me wanna drive a tank while listening, and that to me is how proper metal should sound! It makes you wanna do mighty things so to speak!"

From the morbid, pissed-off lyrics over detuned, massive riffs to the inimitable brick-heavy groove and LG Petrov's titanic roar, "Back To The Front" not only musically but also visually with its stunning painting by Necropolitus Cracoviensis Zbgniew Bielak II (Watain, Ghost, Vader) seems to send a respectful nod to the old school as L-G confirms: "The skull will always be a part of ENTOMBED. I totally agree, we have taken away some of the rock parts and gone with more metal, and I think fans new and old will appreciate that."

With European touring under way in December with label mates and black metal genre leaders WATAIN - vocalist Erik actually penned lyrics for the song "Carnage" (from "When In Sodom" EP, 2006) - and former band member Nicke Andersson contributed parts to the new song "Vulture And The Traitor", the Swedish metal platoon ENTOMBED anno 2013 has all its weapons polished and reloaded and is ready to shatter the entire music scene with an uncompromising full frontal assault. So, let us all enjoy "Back To The Front" and celebrate the fact that the legend called ENTOMBED has finally returned. Goddamn!

Live At The Sands: Before Frank

Swinging Hard and Heavy With Orchestral Support, Live Big-Band Album Recorded During the Count's Warm-Up Sets for Sinatra in Early 1966 in Vegas

Incredible Sound: Mastered from the Original Master Tapes, Reissue Improves Upon Renowned Dynamics, Presence, Crispness, and Balances

Long Out-of-Print, Seminal Classic is Perfect Complement to Sinatra's Live at the Sands

Count Basie and Frank Sinatra had the perfect arrangement at the Sands. Before the Chairman hit the stage in Vegas, Count Basie and his big band warmed up the already enthusiastic crowd with a brief set of their own. A dynamite entertainer, the legendary leader causes hearts to race, hips to shake, and fingers to snap with high-energy readings of his trademark swing music, taken to feverish heights by both his first-rate orchestra and the incredibly swank setting. Fortunately, the finest of Basie and Co.'s introductory performances from the historic 1966 dates have been preserved here and serve as a seminal complement to Sinatra's iconic Live at the Sands.

Mastered from the original master tapes and pressed at RTI, Mobile Fidelity's analog version of Live at the Sands (Before Frank) gives you a dead-center, eighth-row seat at the famed Sin City club. You'll just need to supply your own table and cocktail. Renowned for its sonic clarity, transparency, crispness, and punch, the record is now tremendously enhanced, with improved tonality, a deeper soundstage, correct balances, and lifelike presence. Each horn occupies its own space, and Basie's transfixing piano-a focal point throughout-resonates with gorgeous detail and impeccable pacing. The collective's energy almost demands to be measured with an SPL meter.

Captured in late January and early February 1966, Live at the Sands (Before Frank) contains most of Basie's signature pieces delivered with an enthusiasm, style, and brassiness that exceed that gracing nearly any of the Count's studio efforts. His band is stacked to the nines, with tenor saxophonist Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, saxophonist/flautist Eric Dixon, and drummer "Sonny" Payne among the prized cast. The Sands dates marked the first time in years that these players, as well as trombonist Al Grey, gathered onstage together.

Encouraged by Basie, the instrumentalists engage in a series of call-and-response passages and standout solos, not the least of which is Davis' turn on a white-hot "Jumpin' at the Woodside" and he and Dixon's exchanges on "This Could Be the Start of Something Big." No slouch, Basie approaches "Makin' Whoopee" with graceful playfulness, and oversees the assortment of uptempo swing numbers and mellow ballads with astute melodicism. A sublime version of the Don Gibson country standard "I Can't Stop Loving You," arranged by Quincy Jones, can almost be considered a bonus.

No, it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing. And Basie and his mates have plenty of it on this superb outing. Big-band jazz seldom enjoyed such levels of rhythmic precision, expert charts, or unfettered joy. Unbelievably, this gem has been out of print for years, with original copies both on vinyl and CD commanding steep prices. Mobile Fidelity's reissue restores not only the sonics but the record's place in jazz history.

Silicon is the new project from New Zealand via Hawaii multi-instrumentalist Kody Nielson. Personal Computer, the debut album, is a seductive electronic pop record that pits Nielson's brilliant soul, funk and disco influenced songwriting against a backdrop of extra-terrestrial noir sonics, calling to mind the varied likes of Flying Lotus, Panda Bear and Portishead in the process, as well as that of Unknown Mortal Orchestra - the project of Nielson's brother and former band-mate in The Mint Chicks. At the heart of Nielson's noir-electronica is a questioning of how the natural can ever again match the arousing constellation of this blissful synthetic. The album is bombastic and gripping, yet consistently groomed. His main-frame psychedelia collates all the fragments of himself and masterfully sticks them back together.

    Learning To Crawl

What is the sound of a fledgling band dealing with multiple tragedies, coming to terms with drastic changes, digging deep into its consciousness, finding resolution in hurt, and overcoming staggering odds to record a bonafide masterwork? It's the sound of every note that graces the Pretenders' Learning to Crawl. Still recognized as one of the most emotionally gripping and musically gutsy performances ever made, the smash 1984 album hasn't aged a day. And now, it sounds better than could ever be imagined.

Half-speed mastered from the original master tapes, Learning to Crawl finally possesses the combination of whisper-in-your-ear intimacy and nerve-checking toughness that it's always demanded on Mobile Fidelity's super-quiet analog LP. Leader Chrissie Hynde's voice is made viscerally apparent, wavering between vigorous determination and solemn reflection, while drummer Martin Chamber's punchy backbeats register with requisite punch. To say nothing of how fresh the effort's hit singles (Middle of the Road, Back on the Chain Gang) and incredible deep cuts sound.

The story behind Learning to Crawl is directly connected to the powerful, moving music within. After releasing two records that swept the world by storm (Pretenders and Pretenders II, the latter available on hybrid SACD from Mobile Fidelity), the group's fortunes reversed after guitarist James Honeyman-Scott was found dead of a drug overdose in 1982. Shortly thereafter, founding member Pete Fardon, fired just two days before his partner's death, also succumbed to an overdose, leaving the band's state in tatters. Would there still be a Pretenders?

Hynde answers this question with a resounding yes on Learning to Crawl, which still contains signs of the band's early, street-wise rawness but also adds new wrinkles, with more streamlined melodies, sensitive ballads, and reflective tones. Back on the Chain Gang, the Pretenders' most commercially successful hit, functioned as a bittersweet tribute to her ex-mates while the Christmas-themed 2000 Miles holds rank as one of the most effecting, penetrating love songs of Hynde's career. Throughout the record, the Pretenders are again one.

New guitarist Robbie McIntosh supplies simpler, bluesier, basic guitar lines and the foursome know how to all-out rock, with the furious Middle of the Road and socially conscious My City Was Gone testifying to a stinging, thrilling sensibility that can exist only because of the devastation that the band survived. Call it the rise of the phoenix or triumph of the human will, but any way you see it, Learning to Crawl occupies a rare territory--akin to the space referred to on the superb cover of Thin Line Between Love and Hate--that registers in the pits of the human soul.

Whether you've grown up with this album, heard it in college, or are just learning about it now, Mobile Fidelity's expertly mastered 180g LP version is the only analog edition worth owning. Hear Hynde and Co.'s cathartic, transcendent effort in all its full splendor, and, like the Pretenders, refuse to settle for less.

    Bear Creek

Bear Creek is the newest release from singer/songwriter/guitarist Brandi Carlile who has been hailed as "the best voice in indie rock" by Paste Magazine. The lead track "That Wasn't Me," is a soulful piano-based song that showcases the warmth and subtle power of Carlile's vocals. It is the cornerstone of an earthy collection that embraces all of her musical influences: folk, pop, country, rock, gospel and blues. The album was named after the studio where most of the album was recorded, Bear Creek Studios, a converted early 20th century barn near Carlile's hometown of Seattle, WA.

The 13-song set features contributions from her longtime band mates: Tim and Phil Hanseroth ("The Twins," who co-wrote many of the songs with Carlile and play guitar and bass respectively), drummer/percussionist Allison Miller and cellist Josh Neumann plus Dave Palmer on keyboards and Jeb Bows on violin and mandolin. Drummer Matt Chamberlain guests on several tracks. Grammy winning engineer/producer/mixer Trina Shoemaker (Sheryl Crow, Emmylou Harris, Queens of the Stone Age) and Brandi and The Twins produced the Bear Creek Studios sessions. Frank Liddell (Miranda Lambert, Lee Ann Womack) and Jay Joyce (Cage the Elephant, Emmylou Harris) produced three tracks at Tragedy/Tragedy Studios in Nashville, TN.

Bear Creek follows Carlile's 2011 live album, Live at Benaroya Hall with the Seattle Symphony, which the Seattle Times called "breathtaking." It was recorded during the band's sold-out two-night stand at the prestigious venue in November of 2010. To date, Carlile has sold over 800,000 albums and has played over 700 live shows.

    Womanchild

When CÉcile McLorin Salvant arrived at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC to compete in the finals of the 2010 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition, she was not only the youngest finalist, but also a mystery woman with the most unusual background of any of the participants. When she walked away with first place in the jazz world's most prestigious contest, the buzz began almost immediately. If anything, it has intensified in the months leading up to the launch of her Mack Avenue Records debut, WomanChild.

"She has poise, elegance, soul, humor, sensuality, power, virtuosity, range, insight, intelligence, depth and grace," Wynton Marsalis asserts. "I've never heard a singer of her generation who has such a command of styles," remarks pianist Aaron Diehl. "She radiates authority," critic Ben Ratliff wrote in The New York Times in response to one of her post-competition performances, and a few weeks later his colleague Stephen Holden announced that "Ms. McLorin Salvant has it all.... If anyone can extend the lineage of the Big Three-Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald-it is this 23-year-old virtuoso."

Yet at almost every step of the way, McLorin Salvant has followed a different path from her peers. Born in Miami to a French mother and Haitian father, McLorin Salvant's first language was French. She immersed herself in the classical music tradition, long before she turned to jazz-starting on piano at age five and joining the Miami Choral Society at age eight. When it came time for college, McLorin Salvant bypassed all the US conservatories and jazz schools, heading instead to Aix-en-Provence in France, where she continued to develop as a singer, but with an emphasis on classical and baroque vocal music as well as jazz.
There, thousands of miles away from jazz's land of origin, McLorin Salvant entered into a fruitful partnership with reed player and teacher Jean-François Bonnel, first as a student and soon as a performer. Before returning to the US, she gave concerts in Paris, recorded with Bonnel's quintet, and immersed herself in the early jazz and blues vocal tradition. By the time she returned to her home country to take the stage in the Monk Competition, she had drawn on this unusual set of formative experiences in shaping a personal style of jazz singing, surprising and dramatic by turns, and very much in contrast to that of the other participants and McLorin Salvant's contemporaries.

In the aftermath of McLorin Salvant's triumph at the Monk Competition, the jazz world eagerly awaited the winner's first US recording. Answering that call with WomanChild, McLorin Salvant draws on songs spanning three centuries of American music. "I like to choose songs that are a little unknown or have been recorded very few times," McLorin Salvant notes. "While these songs aren't recognized as standards, many should be because they are so beautifully crafted."

On the album, her repertoire ranges from the 19th century ballad "John Henry," refreshed in a spirited up-to- date arrangement, to McLorin Salvant's own 21st century waltz "Le Front CachÉ Sur Tes Genoux" which draws on a poem by Haitian writer Ida Salomon Faubert for its lyric. She is joined by a world class band who share her concern for creating jazz of today by drawing on vibrant traditions of the past: pianist Aaron Diehl and bassist Rodney Whitaker (both of whom are Mack Avenue label mates), guitarist James Chirillo and master drummer Herlin Riley.

The old and new rub shoulders throughout this album, but this singer's attitude is neither beholden to the past nor trying to anticipate the trends of the future. Her captivating singing is immersed in the immediacy of the present moment. So much so, that those who have seen McLorin Salvant in concert marvel at how she radiates the confidence and poise of a mature artist even though she is just at the dawn of her own career.

McLorin Salvant may have the deepest roots of any singer of her generation. She knows the sounds and styles of modern jazz but also possesses complete command of the classic blues and early American vocal tradition. She has studied the entire recorded legacy of the great Bessie Smith (1894-1937), often called the Empress of the Blues, and also has deep familiarity with Valaida Snow, Bert Williams and other early masters of American music. For her, these musicians are exponents of living traditions that she has drawn into the orbit of her own work.

However, McLorin Salvant can't be pinned down as a jazz traditionalist. Alongside fellow Monk Competition winner Jacky Terrasson, she has recorded works by John Lennon/Yoko Ono and Erik Satie, and can sing in French, Spanish or English as the mood and situation warrant. Knowledgeable jazz fans will identify the influence and inspiration from some of the most distinctive modern jazz stylists, such as Betty Carter, Carmen McRae and Abbey Lincoln. She is also currently continuing her studies of the classical and baroque tradition. In short, McLorin Salvant is a seeker and a creative spirit who is determined to push ahead, even while she shows an extraordinary command of the tradition that has preceded her.

In his article in The New York Times, critic Stephen Holden listed some of the virtues of McLorin Salvant's singing: "perfect pitch and enunciation, a playful sense of humor, a rich and varied tonal palette, a supple sense of swing, exquisite taste in songs and phrasing, and a deep connection to lyrics." Her musical skills are considerable, but they are matched by an interpretive ability that is almost more akin to an actor's than a singer's. She draws out the story hidden inside the song, and can draw on the elements of her own personality and a full gamut of emotional stances-from the darkly troubling to the richly comic-in bringing lyrics to life.

"I want to get as close to the center of the song as I can," McLorin Salvant explains. "When I find something beautiful and touching I try to get close to it, and share that with the audience."

On WomanChild, McLorin Salvant gives music lovers the chance to hear why the illustrious judges at the Monk Competition gave her top honors. McLorin Salvant is still a bit of a mystery, but she will hardly be a secret any longer.

The story behind the Valve Isis

Rega's now legendary head electronics engineer Terry Bateman spent 10 years researching the concept of a CD player using valves in the output amplifier.

When it came to the inspiration for this project Terry drew on the enormous experience he gained while working with musical instrument valve amplification, which dates back to the middle part of the 1970's. Terry's concept was based on the need to have a playback chain, which is in harmony with the instruments and equipment being used.

Valves have been widely used in musical instrument and recording amplification from the 1950's to the present day, therefore it made great sense to develop a valve based CD player to match that of the signal chain found in such applications. This approach kept the circuit straightforward, this is mainly because musical instrument amplification is not excessively hindered by some of the folklore surrounding certain aspects of valve audio design. He took the approach of combining the technical and sonic attributes of valves in a differential instrumentation amplifier circuit driven from differential output DAC with a passive LC filter.

Careful choice of valves and the use of moderate levels of feedback keep the distortion at reasonable levels thus keeping the colouration to a minimum. The valve Isis became fully realised when he combined the valve project with the Wolfson high performance differential output WM8741 DAC along with the digital playback circuitry of its solid state stable mate.

    Design

The valve Isis shares the same digital and USB sections as found in the solid state version however the analogue stage is valve based with passive filtering. This stage uses two military specification triple mica 5814A (ECC82/12AU7) triodes being driven by the revolutionary Wolfson WM8741 ultra high performance digital to analogue converter.

The output buffer and transformer driver stage uses two ECC88 (6DJ8/6922) triodes. This, like its solid-state stable mate, is of an un-orthodox design. The design goal with this player was to keep away from the normal design approach of lets run it through a valve to make it sound warm, but take advantage of industrial valve circuits to make an articulate and competent valve based CD player. Careful choice has been made for every component in the digital and the analogue signal path to ensure the integrity of the signal.

Careful design of the PCB's ensures isolation of not just the digital and analogue sections, but also the motor, display and user interface processor. All sonically critical electrolytic capacitors have been by-passed with polypropylene or polyester film capacitors. In addition to this, large value electrolytic capacitors have also been by-passed with audio grade electrolytic capacitors. Power supply impedances in the digital to analogue converter are kept very low by the use of solid polymer capacitors. All power supplies utilise custom Rega K-Power smoothing capacitors, and fast diodes have been used throughout in power supply rectification.

The Isis uses enhanced and optimised control code for the control of the CD processor and user display; this will speed up the initialisation process by means of a tighter control interface between the user micro and CD processor.

    Technology

The differential output of the digital to analogue converter drives a valve differential (operational) amplifier, with a very modest amount of feedback to stabilise the operating conditions. The 5814A based differential amplifier, with a solid-state current generator in its tail, takes full advantage of the differential output from the digital to analogue converter. This is followed by a passive Butterworth second order LC filter. Finally, this signal is buffered using a low anode resistance ECC88 to drive the output and balancing transformer.

In design it was felt that unnecessarily high levels of THD would unduly overwhelm the qualities of the digital stage of the Isis. The overall THD is typically 0.06% being prominently even order, where the 2nd harmonic predominates. This will give the sonic dynamics of the valves without dominating the sonic qualities of the digital section.

After many hours of tube rolling we found the 5814A differential amplifier position was best on the grounds of micro-phonics, reliable operation and sonic qualities. Both the HT & LT power supplies are fully regulated and use the same power supply parts as used in the solid state Isis. Like the solid-state analogue stage valve Isis has it's own dedicated 50VA mains transformer, ensuring galvanic isolation between the digital and analogue sections of the player.

The Isis has an isolated balanced output, and in keeping with the spirit of the valve circuit topology we have opted to use a transformer in this position. This balancing transformer is made to the same exacting standards to that found in the IOS MC amplifier.

We hope that you enjoy this product as much as we have enjoyed creating it. - Rega

All these features amalgamate to create the supreme level of performance found in the Isis and provide a perfect partner for the Rega Osiris amplifier.

    Carolina Chocolate Drops/Luminescent Orch. EP

On The Carolina Chocolate Drops' Nonesuch debut, Genuine Negro Jig, this youthful trio explored what Sing Out! magazine called the virtually hidden tradition of black string band music, reaching far back into the last century to trace its lineage from the Piedmont region of North Carolina to the British isles and Africa. Multi-instrumentalists and singers Dom Flemons, Rhiannon Giddens, and Justin Robinson transformed their findings into lively tracks that deftly blended the timeless with the modern. Near-forgotten musical history came resoundingly back to life.

On this new four-song EP, the Drops find an instant connection to the Romanian gypsy punk music of their recent tour-mates, the Brooklyn-based Luminescent Orchestrii, a five-piece group about whom the Scotsman says The balancing of frenzy and finesse is evidently a trademark displayed to its utmost in the insanely frenetic dance tunes. Human beatboxer Adam Matta also joined the two bands for this short collection: a brilliant and absolutely live-in-the-studio, no overdubs, mashup of sounds, cultures and repertoire.

These nine kindred souls seamlessly combine material already popularized by the Drops (their ingenious reworking of Blu Cantrell's brazen R&B anthem, Hit 'Em Up Style) with original material from the Orchestrii (Knockin'). They split their session time between Brooklyn and Winston-Salem, NC, but make everything sound like part of one thrillingly virtuosic jam. Instrumentation includes fiddles, banjo, harmonica and bass, plus lots of hand-clapping, free-style rapping and human beat-boxing. These tracks were recorded with such immediacy and clarity, and with such a palpable sense of fun and friendship, that listening is almost like being there, hootin' and hollerin' along with them on a makeshift dance floor. And, as with any great party, the disc feels like it's over much too soon.
