UndercurrentMatisyahu's sixth studio album, Undercurrent, is musically his most courageous and lyrically his most vulnerable release to date. The music comes from trust. Trust in his band. There are no post-production bells and whistles, excessive overdub distractions, or litany of special guests.
On Undercurrent, the vulnerability felt throughout the lyrical narrative comes from acceptance in uncertainty. It's a musical reframing of the Jewish philosophical differences between the constant of faith and the immediacy of trust. Together, Matisyahu and his band have crafted a fully realized concept album about the forces within. The undercurrents of life, pulling at us all beneath the surface and unseen by those looking only at the surface.1. Step Out Into The Light

Cabin By The SeaFormed in 2003 out of Huntington Beach, CA, The Dirty Heads combine an intriguing mix of hip-hop, reggae and alternative rock with a sunny California swagger. The band released their debut album, Any Port In A Storm in 2008, which features the hit track Lay Me Down, a song that spent eleven weeks at #1 on the Billboard alternative chart, more than any single that year by any artist. The single was certified gold. In 2010, Rolling Stone touted The Dirty Heads as the year's 'Best New Bands.'
Cabin By The Sea maintains the diversity from their first album, roaming from sunny acoustic pop (Cabin By The Sea) to hip-hop with mariachi horns (Disguise) and feel-good reggae (Day By Day, Your Love). The album's defining trait? An insistence on positivity and good vibes, a philosophy summed up nicely by the single, Spread Too Thin. IVDub Trio is back with their fourth and most powerful album to date, IV, an overwhelming blend of sounds, styles and ideas that come out swinging, and hit harder than ever. Can metal coexist with dubs bass heavy rhythms? Dub Trios newest album proves that not only can such incongruities coexist, but that in the right hands they flourish!
With IV the band succeeds dramatically at emphasizing the theories, emotions, sounds and concepts of their current musical exploration. IV finds the members playing multiple instruments, tweaking, turning and torturing knobs, cutting and chopping the audio itself, and shaping the compositions to create their own unique interpretation of dub as an art form.
As go-to live musicians for both Mike Patton and Matisyahu, Dub Trio has also worked closely with Lady Gaga as her original showcasing band, 50 Cent and G-Unit, Mary J. Blige, Tupac, Yoko Ono, The Fugees, Lauryn Hill, Mos Def, Mobb Deep, and many more.1. En Passant

Easy Star's ThrillahFollowing up on the hugely successful reggae tribute albums of Dub Side of the Moon (2003), Radiodread (2006) and Easy Star's Lonely Hearts Dub Band (2009) comes the reggae adaptation of the greatest selling record of all time - Michael Jackson's Thriller. The album, titled Easy Star's Thrillah will be released August 28, 2012 (a day before the 53rd anniversary of Jackson's birth). Easy Star's Thrillah brings back several of the reggae stars from previous albums, such as vocalists Michael Rose (Black Uhuru), Steel Pulse, Luciano, Mojo Morgan (Morgan Heritage), alongside the diverse playing of guests Yossi Fine (David Bowie, Lou Reed, Stanley Jordan), Joe Tomino (Dub Trio/Matisyahu), Andy Farag (Umphrey's McGee), and horn tracks courtesy of Israel's highly-acclaimed funk/hip-hop band Hadag Nachash. The album will be preceded by the July 10th digital release of the Billie Jean EP, which includes two album tracks, along with non-album remixes and a dub version.
In selecting Thriller, Easy Star Records co-founder Lem Oppenheimer says, We've always tackled the greats - The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Radiohead - but while we wanted to take on another huge album, we also wanted to blaze new trails. In Thriller we found those new trails in a number of firsts for the series: the first album by an American artist, the first non-concept album, the first R&B/soul record, as well as the first release from the 80s.
For me, I was most excited for Thriller, says producer/arranger/guitarist Michael Goldwasser. I was always more of an R&B/soul and reggae kid growing up and I have an intense personal connection to Michael Jackson's music. As usual, the process initially involved Goldwasser spending a few months on arranging the songs. Writing the arrangements for this album was a cool challenge. I didn't have to try to make non-dance music into dance music as on our previous albums because the original Thriller is so danceable already, but I needed to find ways to make each song groove in a different way from the original version. I didn't want any of the arrangements to be obvious in that regard. In the end, Goldwasser's arrangements are some of the most interesting in his career.
Now that the hard work in the studio is done, the band is looking forward to bringing this music on the road, adding some dance/pop songs to their already varied sets. The band's live show, which was nominated for a UK Festy Award in 2009, already features tracks from the band's previous three tribute albums, along with original material. An extensive fall tour of the US and UK is already set up (US dates listed below), with more to come over the next year. As the original Thriller album comes up on its 30-year anniversary in November, what better way to celebrate this timeless album than to catch the Easy Star All-Stars perform their reggae-infused versions of this pop masterpiece.1. Mehliana: Taming the Dragon
Two 140-gram LPs Pressed At Pallas MFG In Diepholz, Germany
Includes CD Of The Album
Nonesuch Records releases the debut album from the electric duo of Brad Mehldau and Mark Guiliana, Mehliana: Taming the Dragon. The two have been performing for several years, including a brief US tour this fall and an ongoing European tour, with Mehldau playing Fender Rhodes and synthesizers and Guiliana on drums and effects, as they are on the record. Mehliana comprises 12 original tunes-six written by the duo and six written by Mehldau-and was engineered and mixed by Greg Koller (Jon Brion, Kanye West). The vinyl edition of the album includes two 140-gram LPs pressed at Pallas MFG in Diepholz, Germany, and a CD of the album.
Brad Mehldau played in a number of different ensembles, including label mate Joshua Redman's quartet, before becoming a bandleader himself in the 1990s. The Brad Mehldau Trio, which tours the world extensively, made eight acclaimed recordings for Warner Bros., including the five widely praised Art of the Trio albums with former drummer Jorge Rossy (released as a boxed set by Nonesuch in 2011). The pianist's nine years with Nonesuch have been equally productive, beginning with the solo disc Live in Tokyo and including six trio records Day Is Done, House on Hill, Live, Ode, and Where Do You Start, as well as a collaboration with soprano RenÉe Fleming, Love Sublime; a chamber ensemble album, Highway Rider; two collaborations with label mate Pat Metheny, Metheny Mehldau and Quartet, the latter of which also includes Trio members Jeff Ballard and Larry Grenadier; a CD/DVD set of live solo performances, Live in Marciac; and collaborations with genre-crossing musicians on Modern Music, with composer/pianist Kevin Hays and composer/arranger Patrick Zimmerli. Additionally, he produced saxophonist Joshua Redman's 2013 release Walking Shadows.
According to Modern Drummer, Mark Guiliana is "at the forefront of an exciting new style of drumming." The New Jersey native's unique and un-compromised approach to playing the drums has earned him international acclaim as both a leader and a sideman. In 2004, Guiliana created HEERNT, an "experimental-garage-jazz" trio based in New York. The band's debut record, Locked in a Basement, was called the record "the most exuberant, dramatic, beautiful, sassy, genre-busting little outing that I've heard since I don't know when" by legendary drummer Bill Bruford (Yes, King Crimson). As a sideman, Guiliana's longest partnership has been with world-renowned jazz bassist Avishai Cohen. He toured all over the world with Cohen from 2003 until 2008, performing on six studio records and a live DVD recorded at the Blue Note in Manhattan. Guiliana has also recorded and/or performed with Meshell Ndegeocello, Dhafer Youssef, Wayne Krantz, Matisyahu, Jazz Mandolin Project, Jason Lindner, Brad Shepik, Bobby McFerrin, Tigran Hamasyan, and many more. His debut solo record, Beat Music, which was co-produced by Ndegeocello, was released in the spring of 2013. Guiliana plays Gretsch drums, Sabian cymbals, Vic Firth sticks, and Evans drumheads.1. Sound Of ChangeThe Sound of Change can't come from external forces, it has to emanate from within. For Dirty Heads, evolution beyond their reggae-rock roots has developed over time and is manifested on their new album "Sound of Change." Due out summer 2014 via Five Seven Music, the album boasts some of the groups' most diverse and ambitious work to date. "Sound of Change" takes a literal meaning with the production of this album, as the band links up with Grammy award winning producer Supa Dups (Nina Sky, Bruno Mars), Buddah Shampoo (Ty Dolla $ign), Niles (of hip hop duo, The Cataracs), Ward 21 (311, Major Lazer reggae collaborators) and long-time friend and collaborator, Rome (Sublime).
The feel-good vibe associated with their sound was not forgotten. Sonically, "Sound of Change" amps up the groundwork laid by previous albums. Fine-tuned alternative choruses work harmoniously with hip-hop influenced production that seams the songs together. Universal themes of compassion, reflection and happiness are at the core of "Sound of Change." "We wanted the songs on this album to touch on the things we deeply care about and the people we are inside" front man Jared (Dirty J) Watson asserts, "but then we want to address the other side - when the weekend comes and we need to let go and just rage." Who can't relate to that feeling?
Vocalist/Guitarist Dustin Bushnell (Duddy B) is constantly looking to connect the dots between the live show with the album tracks, often mentally mapping out the live elements as the songs are being recorded. For the touring cycle surrounding the release "Sound of Change" the band plans to bring a live show that will energetically compliment each new track. Dirty Heads have racked up their miles bringing that live experience to fans across the globe for over a decade. "Now that our lives are touring we get to see the world," both Watson and Bushnell agree, "we're taking stories and vibes from around the world and making this album is the culmination of that."
The band's breakout 2008 album "Any Port In The Storm" included the chart-topping hit track "Lay Me Down" which features current Sublime frontman, Rome. The track had an incredible run for eleven weeks at #1 on the Billboard charts, laying a solid foundation for their follow up sophomore album "Cabin By The Sea" which was released in 2012. Dirty Heads then began their musical metamorphosis with their 2013 acoustic album "Home - Phantoms Of Summer," allowing time for their metamorphosis embodied in "Sound of Change." Their previous work featured contributions from talent such as Del The Funky Homosapien, Matisyahu, Rome (Sublime) and guitar legend Slash.
"Sound of Change" is a melting pot of all the band members' experiences and musical persuasions, addressing both serious and lighthearted subject matter in their signature way. On the lighter side of the spectrum, "Burn Slow" (Produced by Rome, featuring rapper, Tech N9ne) showcases the hip-hop oriented side of the band. With anthemic choruses and a feel-good aura, Watson boasts the song is the perfect soundtrack for those times when you're "having a good time, going out with friends and realize that sometimes you just need to chill." The retro sound and sexy lyrics of "Hear You Comin," highlights Watson's soaring vocals in its hook. The first single, the metaphorical "My Sweet Summer" (produced by Niles from The Cataracs) is, in reality, a song for all seasons. An undeniable groove underlines the lyrical lament. The title track "Sound of Change" is the key manifestation of the artistic maturation of the band. "The world is always changing political and social outlooks and on a broader scale, look at the changes within yourself" Watson reflects, "the song is about embracing the change life is going to bring no matter what, because that change is inevitable." Though there is diversity on "Sound of Change," as a body of work, it is cohesive in a way only Dirty Heads can achieve.
As a full six-piece unit, frontmen Watson and Bushnell are joined by keyboardist/vocalist Shawn Hagood, percussionist Jon Olazabal, drummer Matt Ochoa and bassist David Foral. This lineup is hell-bent on grabbing new ears with "Sound of Change." Their own journey can be heard within the album- all you have to do is sit back and listen.1. Sound Of Change

Live At Stubb's Vol. II (Out Of Stock)When Matisyahu's groundbreaking original live album, Live at Stubb's, was released in 2005, it launched him onto Top 40 radio with his now most-recognizable anthem King Without a Crown. The album reached #1 on the Billboard Reggae Album Chart.
Now with three critically acclaimed studio albums to his name, Matisyahu decided to return to where it all-began. On a hot August night in Austin, TX, in the summer of 2010, he took the stage at the famed music venue Stubb's with his band, Brooklyn's The Dub Trio, for an unforgettable live music experience.
