Matthew Sweet's third album is a remarkable artistic breakthrough ... thanks to his exceptional songwriting, the album is a fresh, original interpretation of a classic sound. - Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AllMusic.com

... the holy grail of power pop. -Tiny Mix Tapes

This is the vinyl release Matthew Sweet's 1991 classic has always deserved and the best Girlfriend you'll ever have ... Matthew Sweet's essential 1991 power-pop tour-de-force gets its analog due on Intervention's Expanded Edition 180-Gram Double-LP release!

Girlfriend's original 1991 LP release was a single LP that simply excised the last three songs that were included on the original 15-track CD release. Those three tracks were a tremendous loss as the song's final, elegiac track Nothing Lasts was considered as the title track.

Intervention's amazing Double LP Expanded Edition restores the original 15-song repertoire to three vinyl sides for maximum bass and dynamics. Side D includes three demo tracks- Good Friend, Superdeformed and Teenage Female.

Girlfriend's album art was lovingly restored by Intervention's Art Director Tom Vadakan, and printed as a gorgeous Old Style gatefold by Stoughton printing in LA. It's printed on heavy stock and film-laminated for superior color depth, beauty and durability. The center labels were printed by Dorado.

15 of the 18 tracks on this 2x LP Expanded Edition are 100% Analog Mastered from the Original Master Tapes by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound. The last three tracks are Matthew Sweet's own demo recordings made to DAT and therefore cut from digital files from the DAT masters. Girlfriend's original 1991 LP release was a single LP that simply excised the last three songs that were included on the 15-track CD release. Intervention's cut expands the original 15-song repertoire to three vinyl sides for maximum bass and dynamics. There are big, fat guitar tones and controlled but very expressive bass and a massive soundstage. Girlfriend is not only a 90's classic but an amazingly pure and simply tremendous rock recording!

1995's 100% Fun is the third leg of Matthew Sweet's Holy Trinity of Power Pop! Produced by Brendan O'Brien, it's a densely-layered production full of grinding guitars, heavy bass lines and BIG drum sounds.

Intervention's 19-track Expanded Edition 2x LP set is the defining presentation of this great album! While the original repertoire's 12 tracks are bigger and better than ever, the 7 Bonus Tracks are on their own 12 45 RPM 180-gram LP!

100% Fun is 100% Analog Mastered from the Original Master Tapes by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound. The Master Tapes are 30ips 1/2 analog reels, and the seven bonus tracks are on their own reel. Intervention's cut is big, punchy and dynamic with plenty of producer Brendan O'Brien signature crunch completely intact. Matthew's amazing vocals really shine here amid the layered densities of O'Brien's mix. A big, bold improvement over the 1990s original LP, and so much better than the CD as to make that comparison a total farce.

Altered Beast is a brilliant, ambitious creation ... -Rarebird's

The middle entry in Matthew Sweet's holy 90's Power-Pop Trilogy, Altered Beast is a sprawling, multi-dimensional power-pop trip finally presented at its artistic fullest. Sweet was a songwriting machine in this period, and in doing source research a third analog master reel with 6 extra tracks was discovered. Intervention's 2X 180-Gram LP Expanded Edition is a 21-track Beast that shows a master songwriter at his prolific best.

While many of these extra tracks were used as B-sides on CD singles and saw release on other compilations, Intervention's Expanded Edition places these songs in the context they belong, with the album for which they were recorded. Hearing the quality of tracks like Superdeformed one wonders how Altered Beast wasn't originally a double LP!

The original 1990's LP crammed all 56 minutes of the original repertoire onto two LP sides, forcing dramatically lower levels, much softer dynamics and less expressive bass. Intervention's cut expands the original repertoire over three vinyl sides, opening up the sound stage and for the very first time presenting this amazing recording will FULL bass extension and dynamic power! The result is the best-sounding Altered Beast that's ever been or ever will be! This is simply a fabulous-sounding rock recording that's big, bold and super fun to listen to.

Altered Beast's album art was lovingly restored by Intervention's Art Director Tom Vadakan, and printed as a gorgeous Old Style gatefold by Stoughton printing in LA. It's printed on heavy stock and film-laminated for superior color depth, beauty and durability. The center labels are printed by Dorado.

A must-have for fans of Matthew Sweet's Holy Trinity of Power-Pop studio classics is 1994's Son of Altered Beast. Featuring a remix and an outtake from the from the Altered Beast studio album + 5 amazing, ferocious live recordings, Son of Altered Beast is a fascinating snap shot in time from Sweet's amazingly prolific 1990's winning streak which began with 1991's Girlfriend.

Remarkably, although recorded 100% analog, Intervention's reissue is the FIRST TIME ON VINYL for Son of Altered Beast! The 180-Gram LP is 100% analog mastered, and housed in a gorgeous single-pocket Old Style gatefold printed by Stoughton Printing. The jacket art was restored by Intervention's art director Tom Vadakan.

    Mastering Notes

Although Son of Altered Beast was recorded all analog, it was compiled in and for the CD era so its tracks were never sequenced onto a single set of analog master tapes. Instead the master tracks for 7-song repertoire, comprised of 2 studio tracks and 5 live recordings, are spread across several analog master reels. For the best possible sonic experience, Intervention's Shane Buettner and Sterling's Ryan Smith decided to dub the tracks flat 1:1 to new, fresh tape reels in sequence and master 100% ANALOG! The resulting sound is simply stunning, completely blowing the small, hard and glassy sound of the original CDs completely out of the water! IR's 100% analog vinyl cut is beautifully smooth, open and dynamic. Fans can finally hear Son of Altered Beast in its true glory, a tremendous set of live songs from Matthew's 1990's peak!

    Tomorrow Forever

Matthew Sweet's new album, Forever Tomorrow, was recorded at his new studio - Black Squirrel Submarine - in Omaha where he now lives. Matthew engineered, performed on guitars, keyboards, bass, and god knows what else, sang lead and background vocals and mixed the recordings. The record was mastered for vinyl at the famed Abbey Road Studios in London by Sean Magee, a longtime veteran at the studio. Sean won a Grammy for his Beatles reissues and has recently won accolades for his remastering of the John Lennon solo catalog reissues. The record will be released on Sweet's label, Honeycomb Hideout.

    100% Fun

    Import

Released in 1995, 100% Fun is the fifth album by Alternative Rock musician Matthew Sweet. Matthew Sweet's guitar-dominated, hook-laden power Pop runs through its 12 songs at a swift pace.

Behind Sweet's bright hooks lies something darker, the self-loathing of Sick Of Myself and the mental manipulation of We're The Same aren't evident from the sound of the record, which obliterates any hidden meanings with its chiming guitars and driving rhythms.

Sick of Myself was a big hit in 1995, placed in the Mainstream Rock Chart, Modern Rock Tracks, and The Billboard Top 100.

    Tomorrow's Daughter

    <
"When I was young, the artists that I really admired were the ones who always found a way to keep making music and expressing themselves," Matthew Sweet says on the occasion of the release of his 13th solo album Tomorrow's Daughter. "To me, those guys were the real artists, and I've tried to hold on to that attitude in my own work."

The seasoned singer/songwriter/producer/multi-instrumentalist is currently in the midst of a personal musical renaissance that's seen him produce some of the most compelling and ambitious music of his three-decade career.

That description applies to Tomorrow's Daughter, on which such instantly memorable new tunes as "Belong," "Run Away," "Lady Frankenstein" and "Out of My Misery" demonstrate his uncanny ability to tap into a bottomless well of pop history to craft music that's effortlessly catchy yet deeply personal.

Tomorrow's Daughter-the follow-up to the artist's acclaimed 2017 set Tomorrow Forever-is a persuasive testament to the enduring qualities of Sweet's adventurous, emotion-charged songcraft. The new album's 12 songs abound with the punchy melodic sensibility, playful sonic experimentalism and introspective lyrical insight that have been constants in his expansive catalog.

Tomorrow's Daughter is the product of a burst of creative inspiration that followed Sweet's 2013 return to his native Nebraska, where he reestablished his Black Squirrel Submarine home studio. This period yielded 38 brilliant new songs, 17 of which appeared on Tomorrow Forever. It instantly became clear that this potent body of work merited a follow-up release, hence Tomorrow's Daughter.

"It just sort of became my next record," Sweet says of Tomorrow's Daughter, which like its predecessor is released via his own Honeycomb Hideout imprint but this time distributed by MRI / Sony. Both albums feature Sweet's current touring band, comprised of guitarist Jason Victor (also a member of the recently-reformed Dream Syndicate) and his longtime rhythm section of bassist Paul Chastain and drummer Ric Menck (also known for their own acclaimed work with Velvet Crush).

"When I put together Tomorrow's Daughter out of what I'd recorded, the 12 songs totally made sense to me in sequence," Sweet explains. "I enlisted some of the people around me, friends and family, to listen to everything I'd recorded and pick their favorites, and everyone pretty much agreed on what was the top stuff. I think it stands up as a separate record, and as a time capsule of the time that we made it."

The distinctive musical and lyrical qualities that illuminate Tomorrow's Daughter have been hallmarks of Matthew Sweet's work since he began making music as a high school student in his native Lincoln, Nebraska. While attending the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia, he became active in that town's burgeoning underground music scene, as a member of the now-legendary indie combos Oh-OK and Buzz of Delight, and in collaborations with R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe and Chris Stamey of The dB's.

A demo recorded with producer Don Dixon led to solo deals with Columbia (which released Sweet's debut album Inside in 1986), A&M (1989's Earth) and finally Zoo, which issued his commercial and creative breakthrough Girlfriend in 1991. Girlfriend won raves from critics and established him with a wide international fan base that continues to support him today.

Sweet continued to reveal new layers of songwriting depth and sonic creativity on his subsequent efforts Altered Beast, the spin-off EP Son of Altered Beast, 100% Fun, Blue Sky on Mars and In Reverse. His musical gifts continued to shine into the new century with Kimi Ga Suki, Living Things, Sunshine Lies, Modern Art and the Under the Covers series, a three-volume collaboration with Susanna Hoffs of the Bangles (Sweet also served as producer of the Bangles' 2011 album Sweetheart of the Sun).

"I can barely even fathom it," Sweet says of his massive body of recorded work. "But here I am, so I try to live up to whatever it is I've established so far. To do the work is the really important thing to me, but knowing that I'm connecting with people makes me happy. I've continued touring pretty consistently, and it's nice to see that people still care enough to come out to the shows. There seems to be a real emotional attachment for them, which means a lot to me."

Sweet is in the midst of an especially productive period that's seen him continue to generate new material at a prolific pace. He's already recorded

Wicked System of Things, a collection of new original songs to be released as a limited-edition vinyl LP in November 2018 for Black Friday Record Store Day, and is planning his next general-release album.

"I feel like I'm gonna be pretty active for awhile, and it's fun to be releasing a lot of music," he says. "I thought that there might be some resistance to putting out so much stuff, but that hasn't been the case, and that's encouraged me to keep going."

Now firmly ensconced, along with his wife, cats and vintage recording gear, in Nebraska after a two-decade-plus stretch in Los Angeles, Sweet works out of his home studio, which allows him to indulge his bottomless musical imagination, and to engage in long-distance collaborations with musicians in other locations-a method that he employed on both Tomorrow Forever and Tomorrow's Daughter.

"In some ways I think that moving has had a positive effect musically," he reflects. "I think it reconnected me a little bit to what it felt like when I was really young and music was new to me, and maybe that's reflected in the music. But it's hard to say, because making music is so internal for me that it's mostly in my head rather than my surroundings."

Meanwhile, Sweet's catalog continues to be a source of inspiration for longtime fans and new converts. For instance, the Intervention label is planning deluxe two-LP vinyl editions of Girlfriend, Altered Beast, Son of Altered Beast and 100% Fun, which will feature a wealth of rare and unreleased material. But it's creating new music that remains Matthew Sweet's main concern, and he continues to do so with renewed intensity.

"This feels like a really good time for me, and I feel lucky and grateful to still be doing what I love to do," Sweet asserts. "I feel like I'm in a totally positive place, and maybe moving has been a catalyst for that.

"When I meet young people and they ask for advice about a career in music, I always say, 'Do music because it's what you love to do, and because you'd do it no matter what happens,'" he concludes. "I've tried to keep that attitude about it, because that's always worked for me. I just try to keep doing my thing and keep believing."

All My Favorite Singers Are Willie Nelson

Astral Swan's All My Favorite Singers Are Willie Nelson is a collection of stark psychedelic folk from the unfiltered neuroses of Calgary's Matthew Swann. Songs steeped in universal anguish, marveling at the world's knack for enterprise and cannibalism, come across instead as subtle, reassuring lullabies. These are quiet, relatable anthems for the outsider set, balancing gentle melodies on Swann's self-obsession with moral fallibility. On first single "Beginning Of The End", Swann delves into the album's various drug states in his sweetly apprehensive tone, a lowly guitar dancing loosely with intoxicated children, asking: "Who told the kids in the yard that they're mostly dust? Now they just stay drunk. Keep getting more fucked up".

Equally inspired by serene 60's folk, 80's no-wave alienation, and the insouciance of 90's grunge, Astral Swans' music is spacious yet constrained, hauntingly personal and oddly sincere. The skeletal "Let Their Faces All Blur Out" races softly with the punk rock abandon of early Sonic Youth and Eric's Trip; "What Calms You Down, Freaks Me Out" bears the ominous pleasance of Syd Barrett, Arthur Russell, Nick Drake, and fellow Calgarian Chad VanGaalen. More structured than Swann's Extra Happy Ghost!!! project (produced by VanGaalen), this album's experimental spirit denies the haphazard "singer-songwriter" label that some might attach to Astral Swans.

Set for release on Dan Mangan's Madic Records, these twelve songs lavish in Swann's startlingly sardonic reflections, in his own words, "confronting our strange ways of experiencing personhood, in the moral gorge between ideals and inadequacies". Tracked live in Swann's living room, and later embellished in an old Calgary warehouse with local experimental/improv mainstay Brad Hawkins (Ghostkeeper), All My Favorite Singers Are Willie Nelson is flawed if not for its air of accidental perfection, normalizing existential struggle with rhythm and harmony, a natural marriage of the sweet to the acrid.

    Blessed

Williams' 2011 Studio Set on 2LP Includes Entire Album on CD Plus a Bonus CD of the Kitchen Tapes Demos

Americana Legend's 12th Record Produced by Don Was

Features Guest Appearances by Elvis Costello and Matthew Sweet

Following a two-year break between albums, and the blossoming of a relationship that turned into marriage, one of the great contemporary songwriters and music makers returns with her twelfth studio set. And being that the artist we're talking about is Lucinda Williams, the record is a doozy.

Diverse and captivating, Blessed opens with the gritty kiss-off Buttercup then moves seamlessly into the sultry blues of Born To Be Loved. Williams delves into a heavier subject as she questions the motives for a suicide on the hard-driving Seeing Black, which features blistering guitar from Elvis Costello. The thoughtful title track slowly builds to a melodic climax as it offers an eye-opening look at whats right in front of us, but too often unnoticed. The singer/guitarist's knack for insights and emotive songs run throughout the 12-song set.

Poignant and powerful, Soldiers Song simultaneously tells a tragic story of the soldier overseas and his wife and child back home. On the gorgeous Kiss Like Your Kiss, Williams lays down one of the most beautiful and fragile vocals she has ever recorded. The original version of the song appeared on the True Blood: Music From The HBO Original Series - Volume 2, and was recently nominated for a Grammy Award.

Its nothing new to see Williams tug at the heartstrings and stimulate the mind on her songs, but there is a vibe throughout Blessed that is unique to this album: the sound of wisdom, wherewithal, and experience Williams has gained through her more than 30 years as an uncompromising artist. Combine that pedigree with Grammy Award-winning producer Don Was, and the results are nothing but special. Was co-produced Blessed with Eric Liljestrand and Tom Overby, who co-produced Williams' highly-praised 2008 effort Little Honey.

Lost Highway's 2LP pressing of Blessed also includes the entire album on CD as well as a revealing bonus disc, titled The Kitchen Tapes, which presents the record's songs in demo form as Williams recorded them, often at her kitchen table, as she's prone to do. Complete packaging on new studio records doesn't come any better!

REAL ESTATE waft in on vibes of hazy summers past. The New Jersey quartet cut the sleeves short and the pop smooth to shade you from the midday heat. Every song works its way to that part of your consciousness that reveled in the fleeting waves of freedom that eked in once classes broke and the sun lingered a little longer over suburban roofs. And with three quarters of the band holding down Garden State roots its no surprise that a bit of Jersey indie-pop heritage sneaks its way into their sound, lifting the most sun streaked moments from The Feelies and Yo La Tengo and filtering them through the kaleidoscope of memories aimless drives through parched neighborhood streets. MARTIN COURTNEYs songwriting has a way of wrapping up the immediacy of youth with the ennui of age for the perfect shade of bittersweet bliss, mind you though, much heavier on the sweet than the bitter. Add to this MATTHEW MONDANILEs (DUCKTAILS, PREDATOR VISION) shimmering guitar strains full of equal parts sea foam and beer foam, pepper in the boardwalk clatter of ETIENNE PIERRE DUGUAYs drums, ALEX BLEEKERs staccato low end and the perfect afternoon is just a lawn chair and boom box away.Andy French (Raven Sings the Blues) Received a Best New Music, 8.5 rating from Pitchfork.

    Blues In Orbit

Remastered By Bernie Grundman From The Original Analog Tapes

Gatefold Old-school Tip-On On Jacket By Stoughton Printing

Plated And Pressed At Quality Record Pressings

It's tempting for Blues in Orbit to be overlooked when Duke Ellington's best albums are discussed, but truly it's an undisputed gem. There are 14 tracks, none of them is longer than 4:50 and it is all good stuff. There are some familiar favorites such as In a Mellotone and C Jam Blues as well as less often heard gems like Blues in Blueprint and Sweet and Pungent. It is also in stereo, and the arrangements are superb.

The featured performers include Ellington stalwarts Johnnie Hodges, Ray Nance, Harry Carney and Jimmy Hamilton, as well as the less familiar Booty Wood and Matthew Gee. Johnnie, in particular is well showcased here, taking the lead not only in slow pieces like Brown Penny and Sentimental Lady, but also in the rousing, Smada.

The full Analogue Productions reissue treatment is at work on this smashing LP - famed mastering engineer Bernie Grundman handled the remastering from the original analog tapes. The lacquers were plated and pressed at Quality Record Pressings, maker of the world's finest-sounding LPs. Lastly we've stashed each super-silent 200-gram disc in a premium Stoughton Printing gatefold jacket.

All of the takes were recorded during after midnight sessions recorded over two nights starting on December 2, 1959 in New York at Columbia Record's studio on East 30th Street. Each night Duke's late dinner arrived at 2 a.m. - a sizzling steak, a pot of coffee with lemons in it, portions of American cheese, and grapefruits. After dinner, and a breather for the band, the sessions finished around dawn in a swinging fashion.

If you're just getting into jazz, this album is highly recommended as a great way to initiate your collection. The sound is incredible, with packaging to match. Another audiophile home run.

Marnie Stern the album mirrors Marnie Stern, the woman. Birthed during a challenging period in her life, the self-titled album is a compendium of life stories both bitter and sweet. From ballads to her signature pop guitar-tapping style, Stern and long-time co-conspirator Zach Hill (Hella) have churned out (for lack of a better word) an enormous album that will further cement Stern as a rising star in today's progressive music landscape. Stern also enlists the bass talents of psych-rock Canadian musician Matthew Flegel (of the band Women) and up-and-coming mixer Lars Stalfors (Mars Volta, Funeral Party) resulting in Stern stepping up her sonic game and revealing a mature and more focused side of herself.

    Sitcom Afterlife

Their songs are full of rich, rural details: frozen lakes, swaying
trees, highway lights glowing in the deep night. - Rolling Stone

Milia's lyrics roll like rich literature and are just as visually
    descriptive. - All Music Guide

As a band steeped in the rose tint of the early 90's, the
references to a collective history we all hold fondly are intrinsic to
Frontier Ruckus' songcraft. The band embarked upon a trilogy of
records surrounding these themes of place: the rust of a
Midwestern suburbia anywhere and the edifice of those oft
crumbling surroundings baked with the deeply passionate
memories they evoke. The Orion Songbook (2008), Deadmalls &
Nightfalls (2010), and Eternity of Dimming (2013) served as a trinity
of sorts to the gravity of those View-Master cartridge visions. In
listening one clicks thru song-slides of Matthew Milia's densely
worded sermons, if you will, belted and cooed with a timbre that is
full and fragile all at once, held together with netting from long-time
friend David Jones' angular banjo throes, and fleshed out by a
thick quasi-orchestra of brass, chord organ, and saw by Zachary
Nichols. Long-time vocalist Anna Burch returns to touring with
the band, providing a honey-sweet gelatin that firmly bases yet
sets each song into a full-throated fire.

Time has settled things, the fossils of those first records remain,
but a new rolling house has been built upon it by the band, as if
pulled from show to show, tour stop to tour stop. Milia and
company aren't stopping. There's some place to be. Now 6 years
on from their first full length, lauds from NPR, Paste, Rolling Stone,
and Daytrotter in the rear-view, and remnants of tours to Europe
and each corner of these United States scattered in fanny-packs
and hollow-body guitar cases, Sitcom Afterlife speaks with a more compact and frontal
approach. In these new songs Frontier Ruckus isn't retreading
those two-lane highways they've came on, but leaning forward -
there's a structured forward motion to this collection, a sense of
urgency toward the present, and a brevity that speaks of
immediate passion - not disregarding that lived-in past but also
not forlornly dragging it behind this shiny-new Airstream trailer that
    is Sitcom Afterlife.
