    Blue Haze

Blue Haze was recorded by Miles Davis in 1953 and 1954 for Prestige Records. The first track, I'll Remember April, is taken from the 1954 session on April 3rd, which made up half of the album Walkin'. The remaining tracks were taken from May 19, 1953, which was with quintet John Lewis, Charles Mingus, Percy Heath and Max Roach and the March 15, 1954 session with quartet including Horace Silver, Heath and Art Blakey.

We Insist!/ Freedom Now Suite (Pure Pleasure)

This is a classic. At a time when the civil rights movement was starting to heat up, drummer Max Roach performed and recorded a seven-part suite dealing with black history (particularly slavery) and racism. Driva' Man has a powerful statement by veteran tenor Coleman Hawkins and there is valuable solo space elsewhere for trumpeter Booker Little and trombonist Julian Priester, but it is the overall performance of Abbey Lincoln that is most notable. Formerly a nightclub singer, Lincoln really came into her own under Roach's tutelage and she is a strong force throughout this intense set. On Tryptich: Prayer/Protest/Peace, Lincoln is heard in duets with the drummer and her wrenching screams of rage are quite memorable. This timeless protest record is a gem. Scott Yanow

    Musicians:

    • Abbey Lincoln (vocal)

    • Coleman Hawkins, Walter Benton (tenor saxophone)

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Clifford Brown & Max Roach, is a 1955 album by influential jazz musicians Clifford Brown and Max Roach as part of the Clifford Brown and Max Roach Quintet, described by The New York Times as perhaps the definitive bop group until Mr. Brown's fatal automobile accident in 1956. The album was critically well-received and includes several notable tracks, including two that have since become jazz standards.

    Freedom Suite

A successful combination of swinging boogaloo rhythms and sincere, soulful soloing, Soul Message is an enduring good-time record and a true gem in
organist Richard "Groove" Holmes' illustrious career. Recorded in 1965 at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, NJ, this set more than lives up to
"Groove's" middle name as the combo of Holmes, guitarist Gene Edwards, and drummer Jimmie Smith swing with carefree ease through two originals
and four jazz standbys, including a smash hit version of "Misty." Jazz fans in search of some seriously swinging organ jazz need look no further than Soul
Message - now available on vinyl.

With 15 albums under his belt, Sonny Rollins was poised to make a bold statement with 1958's Freedom Suite. Sporting a Mohawk haircut on the inside
cover, Rollins was driven by the political climate at the time, acknowledging and questioning his place in society as an African American in the midst of the
Civil Rights Movement. In the nearly 20-minute long title track, comprised of five movements, Rollins and his longtime collaborators - drummer Max
Roach and bassist Oscar Pettiford - were able to dig deep and explore the melodic structure. Side B is comprised of four Broadway showtunes and
standards, which Rollins, Roach and Pettiford make their own. An inspired and vibrant boundary-pushing album.

    Deeds Not Words

This (LP) reissue of a Max Roach Riverside date is notable for featuring the great young trumpeter Booker Little and for utilizing Ray Draper's tuba as a melody instrument; tenor saxophonist George Coleman and bassist Art Davis complete the excellent quintet. Highlights include It's You or No One, You Stepped out of a Dream and Roach's unaccompanied drum piece Conversation. This is fine music from a group that was trying to stretch themselves beyond hard bop. - allmusic.com

Study In Brown album by Clifford Brown / Max Roach was released on the Wax Time label.

From the very first second, beginning with the magic drumming of Max Roach, right up to the very last note, this LP will overwhelm listeners with its sheer power - hard bop is certainly no easy fare for lovers of beautiful sounds. One is swept along in a maelstrom into the unknown, and is taken to wherever the soloist's wealth of ideas leads him. That's particularly clear in the case of Caravan, Lands End, and Gerkin' For Perkin: the brilliantly interacting quartet, all of them soloists with 'equal rights', race through the numbers like an express train. The trumpet and the tenor sax - often playing unisono - are not placed at the fore (which would be usual), but are on the same tonal plane as the rhythm group. By this means, a tightly-knit, typical, thrilling sound is achieved, with the result that this album must be counted among the top 100 in the jazz firmament.

Generations of trumpeters have since studied Clifford Brown's art of playing, who died tragically young in a car accident. Now, thanks to this top-quality re-release, listeners are offered a wonderful opportunity to study this Study In Brown.

The last official album by the Clifford Brown/Max Roach Quintet is the only one that featured the great Sonny Rollins on tenor. With pianist Richie Powell and bassist George Morrow completing the group, this date is a hard bop classic. Brownie and Rollins fit together perfectly on memorable versions of What Is This Thing Called Love, I'll Remember April, and a witty arrangement of Love Is a Many Splendored Thing. Highly recommended.

    Newport Rebels (Pure Pleasure)

The jazz experience just doesn't get any better than this! Newport Rebels was nominated for Sterophile's Records To Die For because of Roy Eldridge's ballsy, all-out trumpet playing on Mysterious Blues and Me and You. Eldridge approached the horn as if neither he nor it had limits - his electrifying, perfectly paced solos prove him right. Neither do the other musicians disappoint. The result is jazz tastefully stretched beyond traditional roots. And the late-1960s, direct-to-two-track recording guarantees a natural sound with few production artifacts.

Recording: November 1960 at the Newport Jazz Festival, Rhode Island, and Nola Penthouse Studios, New York City

    Introducing Johnny Griffin

Johnny Griffin had been kicking around in R&B bands for years before his Blue Note debut in 1956. And what was introduced was a tenor saxophonist with a fresh sound, a warm, soulful style and the fastest technique in jazz. He moves from lyrical ballads to blistering tempos with ease. Within two years, Griff would become one of the leading tenor saxophonists in jazz as a member of Thelonious Monk's quartet.

    Thelonious Monk Trio

Backed alternately by bassists Percy Heath and Gary Mapp and drummers Art Blakey and Max Roach, Monk pours forth his idiosyncratic virtuosity in this
set of tunes recorded by the inimitable Rudy Van Gelder. Beautifully rendered, "Blue Monk" is the highlight of the album, adventurously combining
disharmonic riffs within a melodic and very memorable structure. Monk's explorations conjure up images of a mathematician working out geometric
patterns on the keyboard and evoke a sublime beauty as they build order out of chaos. Intimate, intense, and inspired, Thelonious Monk Trio is a must-have for those ready to dive into the genius of Monk.

    Straight Ahead (Pure Pleasure)

This is one of Abbey Lincoln's greatest recordings. It is a testament to the credibility of her very honest music (and her talents) that Lincoln's sidemen on this date include the immortal tenor saxophonist Coleman Hawkins who takes a memorable solo on Blue Monk), Eric Dolphy on flute and alto, trumpeter Booker Little (whose melancholy tone is very important in the ensembles), pianist Mal Waldron , and drummer Max Roach. Highpoints include When Malindy Sings, Blue Monk, Billie Holiday's Left Alone, and African Lady.

Abbey Lincoln and Max Roach were married in 1962, an association that lasted until 1970. They worked together for a while but Lincoln (who found it harder to get work in jazz due to the political nature of some of her music) became involved in acting and did not record as a leader during 1962-1972. She finally recorded for Inner City in 1973 and gradually became more active in jazz. Her two Billie Holiday tribute albums for Enja (1987) showed listeners that the singer was still in her prime and she has recorded several excellent sets for Verve in the 1990s. Because she puts so much thought into each of her recordings, it is not an understatement to say that every Abbey Lincoln set is well worth owning.

    Musicians:

    • Abbey Lincoln (vocal)

    • Eric Dolphy (piccolo-flute, bass clarinet, alto saxophone)

    • Walter Benton, Coleman Hawkins (tenor saxophone)

    • Booker Little (trumpet)

    • Julian Priester (trombone)

    • Mal Waldron (piano)

    • Art Davis (bass)

    • Max Roach (drums)

    • Roger Sanders, Robert Whiteley (conga)

Recording: February 1961 at Nola Penthouse Studios, New York City

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Brilliant Corners

    Import

Two superb piano trio albums of covers had set the stage for Monk the composer to re-emerge with horns, and the pianist responded with BRILLIANT CORNERS, one of his greatest recordings, featuring three classic new tunes and two formidable studio bands. The Sonny Rollins featured on BRILLIANT CORNERS is a far more imposing presence than the young acolyte of previous Monk sessions--just witness the title tune. With its multiple themes, quirky intervallic leaps, idiomatic rhythmic changes and tricky transitions in tempo, it is one of Monk's masterpieces--a miniature symphony. So daunting were its technical challenges, that the final ending was edited on from another take. Rollins begins his solo with swaggering composure, boldly paraphrasing Monk's vinegary intervals and trademark trills, before navigating the swift rapids of the double-time chorus with deft syncopations. Monk plies dissonance upon dissonance in his first chorus, playing rhythmic tag with Max Roach on the out chorus. Ernie Henry's slip-sliding bluesiness is followed by a brilliant rhythmic edifice from Roach, who maintains melodic coherence at a drowsy tempo, then explodes into the final chorus.Elsewhere, Ba-Lue Bolivar Ba-Lues-Are is a soulful, easygoing blues, and Monk's solo is a compendium of pithy rhythmic devices, bent notes and calculated melodic abstractions, played with enormous relaxation and swing. He concludes with heckling big-band figures that form the basis for Rollins' expressive rhythmic testimonies. Monk employs the bell-like timbre of a celeste to stunning effect on Pannonica, one of his loveliest melodies and improvisations. And in closing, Bemsha Swing is a hard-swinging, conversational performance, with fine contributions from trumpeter Clark Terry, bassist Paul Chambers and Roach on drums and timpani.

Duke Ellington & John Coltrane is a jazz album by Duke Ellington and John Coltrane recorded on September 26, 1962 and released in February 1963 on Impulse! Records.

For Ellington, it was one of many collaborations with fellow jazz-greats in the early 1960s, including Count Basie, Louis Armstrong, Coleman Hawkins, Max Roach and Charles Mingus. More unusually, it placed him in a jazz quartet setting (in this case, saxophone, piano, bass and drums), rather than his usual one in a big band.

For Coltrane, it was an opportunity to work with one of jazz's all-time greats. It was one of several albums he recorded in the early 1960s in a more conservative and accessible style, alongside John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman and Ballads. Despite their differences in background, style and age (Ellington was 63 and Coltrane 36 when the tracks were recorded), it has been said that the two interacted seamlessly and subtly, neither one outshining the other.

The quartet was filled out by the bassist and drummer from either of their bands. The tracks they recorded featured Ellington standards (In a Sentimental Mood), new Ellington compositions and a new Coltrane composition (Big Nick).

Coltrane felt very honoured to work with Ellington: I was really honoured to have the opportunity of working with Duke. It was a wonderful experience. He has set standards I haven't caught up with yet. I would have liked to have worked over all those numbers again, but then I guess the performances wouldn't have had the same spontaneity. And they mightn't have been any better!
