The Smiths' eclectic 1985 release finds the band branching out into rockabilly, post-punk and flashes of funk, all while refining the guitar pop of their debut. Produced by Morrissey and Johnny Marr, Meat Is Murder is the band's sole studio album to reach #1 on the U.K. charts. The Headmaster Ritual and I Want the One I Can't Have are fine elaborations on the formula the band introduced on their debut, while Rusholme Ruffians is an infectious take on rockabilly. Porcupine MeatNaming one's album after a song titled "Porcupine Meat" may seem a little unusual - unless, of course, you're Bobby Rush, who earned his first gold record in 1971 with a hit entitled "Chicken Heads." He elaborates on his recent composition: "If a lady won't treat me right, but she doesn't want anyone else to have me, that is hard to digest." Hence the lyric, "too fat to eat, too lean to throw away."
Porcupine Meat is Rush's debut release for Rounder Records, and one of the best recordings of his astonishing 60-plus year career. The album is due out September 16, 2016.
Rush estimates that he has cut over 300 songs since he first began making music. He has been honored with three Grammy nominations, as well as ten Blues Music Awards and 41 nominations. He was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2006.
Make no mistake: Rush is not your typical octogenarian. At age 82, he exudes the energy of a 20-year-old, on the road for more than 200 dates a year. His hectic tour schedule has earned him the affectionate title King of the Chitlin' Circuit. Rush has traveled the globe including Japan and Beirut. In 2007, he earned the distinction of being the first blues artist to play at the Great Wall of China. His renowned stage act features his famed shake dancers, who personify his funky blues and the ribald humor that he has cultivated during the course of his storied career.
Born Emmet Ellis, Jr. in Homer, Louisiana, he adopted the stage name Bobby Rush out of respect for his father, a pastor. According to Rush, his parents never talked about the blues being the devil's music. "My daddy never told me to sing the blues, but he also didn't tell me to not sing the blues. I took that as a green light."
Rush built his first guitar when he was a youngster. "I didn't know where to buy one, even if I had the money. I was a country boy," he says. After seeing a picture of a guitar in a magazine, he decided to make one by attaching the top wire of a broom to a wall and fretting it with a bottle. He also got some harmonica lessons from his father He eventually acquired a real guitar, and started playing in juke joints as a teenager, when his family briefly relocated to Little Rock, Arkansas. The fake moustache Rush wore made club owners believe he was old enough to gain entry into their establishments. While he was living in Little Rock, Rush's band, which featured Elmore James, had a residency at a nightspot called Jackrabbit.
During the mid-1950s, Rush relocated to Chicago to pursue his musical career and make a better life for himself. It was there that he started to work with Earl Hooker, Luther Allison, and Freddie King, and sat in with many of his musical heroes, such as Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Jimmy Reed, Willie Dixon, and Little Walter. Rush eventually began leading his own band in the 1960s. He also started to craft his own distinct style of funky blues, and recorded a succession of singles for a various small labels. It wasn't until the early 1970s that Rush finally scored a hit with "Chicken Heads." More recordings followed, including an album for Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff's Philadelphia International Label.
Rush relocated one final time, to Jackson, Miss. in the early 1980s. He was tired of the cold up north, and he realized that setting up his base of operations directly in the center of the South would make it easier to perform in nearby cities on weekends. More indie label recordings followed. Songs like "Sue, A Man Can Give (But He Sure Can't Take It)," "What's Good For The Goose Is Good For The Gander Too," and" I Ain't Studdin' You" became regional jukebox favorites in juke joints throughout the region, and many of those songs are still fan favorites that are an integral part of his live repertoire.
Since 2003, Rush has self-released the majority of his work (including the critically acclaimed Folk Funk album) on his Deep Rush label, but recently, he came to the realization that having a bigger record company behind him would be beneficial. "I outgrew myself," he says. "I need someone to help in doing the things I can't do. When you are wearing all the hats, you can't be everywhere at once."
Enter esteemed producer and two-time Grammy winner Scott Billington, Rounder Records' longtime VP of A&R. Billington first met Rush at a Recording Academy meeting 25 years ago, and they became fast friends. He has wanted to work with Rush ever since. "He is the most vital bluesman of his generation," says Billington. He continues, "There are many people who still don't know Bobby Rush, even though he is a hero in the parallel universe of the Chitlin' Circuit - fans stop him on the street in Memphis and Helena and Little Rock."
Porcupine Meat will not only please Rush's older fans, but is likely to win over many new ones. Billington reflects, "We wanted to come up with something fresh, while staying 100% true to Bobby."
The album was recorded in New Orleans, and Rush was pleased and proud to be given the opportunity to make an album in his home state for the very first time. His impassioned vocals and in-the-pocket harmonica playing are among the best performances of his career. Unlike most of his recent releases, these sessions only feature real instruments and no synthesizers. All of the rhythm tracks were cut live in the studio, often edited down from jams that on several occasions ran close to ten minutes.
For the project, Billington assembled some of the best Louisiana musicians, including Shane Theriot, David Torkanowsky, Jeffrey "Jellybean" Alexander, Kirk Joseph, Cornell Williams, and others. Rush brought along his old friend and longtime collaborator, guitarist Vasti Jackson, who worked with Bobby and Scott on getting the songs ready for the studio. Guitar greats Dave Alvin, Keb' Mo', and Joe Bonamassa all make guest appearances on the album.
Rush has always been a prolific and clever songwriter. The songs he penned for Porcupine Meat such as "Dress Too Short," "I Don't Want Nobody Hanging Around," "Me, Myself And I," "Nighttime Gardener," "It's Your Move," and the title selection, all equal or rival his best material. "Funk O' De Funk" delivers exactly what the title suggests and what Rush has always done the best, which is putting the funk into the blues. While "Got Me Accused" is inspired by events from Rush's own life, the lyrics tell an all-too-familiar tale about the rampant racial injustice that afflicts our society. Producer Billington and his wife Johnette Downing (the well known New Orleans songwriter and children's musician) co-wrote a couple of fine selections, "Catfish Stew" and "Snake In The Grass."
Bobby Rush is the greatest bluesman currently performing. Porcupine Meat is a testament to his brilliance, which presents him at his very best, and doesn't try to be anything that he is not. "I just try to record good music and stories," he humbly states. With this recording, he has more than accomplished his goal, and has produced one of the finest contemporary blues albums in recent times.1. I Don't Want Nobody Hanging Around

Meat Loaf's Dead Ringer (1981) is the second of his three albums written entirely by Jim Steinman, among which Bat Out Of Hell was the first.
Once again, Jim Steinman wrote extended, operatic songs with hyperbolic lyrics and organized a backup band anchored by E Street Band members Max Weinberg (drums) and Roy Bittan (keyboards), while Meat Loaf sang with a passion all the more compelling for its hint of the ridiculous.
Four singles were released from Dead Ringer: Dead Ringer For Love, I'm Gonna Love Her For Both Of Us, Read 'Em And Weep and Peel Out. The album reached #1 in the UK. The title track, featuring a perfectly cast Cher as duet singer, went Top Ten.1. Peel Out

Rat FarmDesert-rock legends Meat Puppets returns this spring with their 14th studio album - the 12-track Rat Farm, which Curt Kirkwood dubs "real blown-up folk music"
The album - the band's fourth since the return of Cris Kirkwood in 2007 - is due out April 16 on Megaforce Records. In addition to the Kirkwood brothers, the band now features drummer Shandon Sahm, son of Doug Sahm, as well as Curt's son Elmo Kirkwood on second guitar.
Of the new album, Curt Kirkwood says:
"I tried to write stuff that would stand on its own - just the chords and the melodies, and play it kind of straight. I think that was the guiding boundary that I gave myself. It was one of those things where a lot of times, in the past especially, Cris would go, 'Well, that's all there is? Let's put a prog rock part in the middle.' But I tried to hold it off as much as I could."1. Rat Farm

O ShudderSix years into Dutch Uncles' flourishing career, the idiosyncratic art-popologists return with new album O Shudder which sees them further distilling and refining their signature sound, marrying rock bombast with classical arrangements, acoustic instrumentation with smart synthetic pop.O Shudder is Dutch Uncles' most direct record to date, the sound of a wildly witty band well and truly finding their stride, whilst lyrically tackling the growing pains of being twentysomething in a generic Northern suburbia; according to hip swivelling front man Duncan Wallis, the album covers themes including "pregnancy, social media, terrorism, divorce, sexual dysfunction, job seeking, health scares, doubt, love".With O Shudder, Dutch Uncles continue their fascinating, wonky ascent which has seen them play enormodomes with emo punk rock behemoths and self confessed Dutch Uncles acolytes Paramore, supporting and being supported by like minded left-field pop adventurers Wild Beasts, Outfit, Field Music, and Everything Everything, have a burger named after them by one of Manchester's premiere eateries and prefigure Future Islands' dance moves meme in their video for 2013 single Flexxin. The album was recorded with long term collaborator Brendan Williams in three locations; at a studio in the heart of the Welsh valleys, above a Salford pub, 'The Kings Arms', (incidentally where C4 comedy Fresh Meat is filmed) and, for the acoustic instruments, in the natural reverb of Salford's Peel Hall. The band were meticulous in tweaking their synth sounds so they'd fit seamlessly with the harp, xylophone, marimba, string and woodwind sounds that populate the record. Sources of inspiration for the record included The Blue Nile, Kate Bush's third album, Never For Ever, Igor Stravinsky, Japan and lyrically John Cooper Clarke, Sparks, Ian Dury and Prefab Sprouts' album From Langley Park to Memphis. All set to o shudder and stun, and induce plenty of hip swivelling, Dutch Uncles have delivered on their youthful potential and, with O Shudder, solved their own particular Rubix's cube, bringing their unclassifiable pop music into clear and precise focus.1. Free-For-All is the second solo release from guitarist Ted Nugent and his first album to go platinum. As the recording of Free-For-All commenced, rhythm guitarist and lead vocalist Derek St. Holmes left the band, citing growing personal and creative conflicts with Nugent. Two solid years of living together on the road had taken its toll on the relationship. Additionally, St. Holmes was unhappy with Tom Werman's production, saying that the producer was watering down the band's sound. A full year before Bat Out of Hell brought him international success, vocalist Meat Loaf was brought in by producer Werman to sing on the album. Meat Loaf was paid the sum of $1000 for his contributions to the album, which included crafting all of the vocal arrangements and two days of recording sessions.1. Free-For-All

The Future In Whose Eyes?British Metal Forefathers SikTh Return With Their First Full-Length Album In 11 Years
SikTh pushed me in to the progressive genre. Death of a Dead Day is my jam - Spencer Sotelo (Periphery)
A keystone in the progressive metal genre, SikTh's legacy gave the inspiration for bands like Protest The Hero, Periphery, TesseracT and Animals As Leaders following their hiatus in 2007. Now in 2017 the intense and enigmatic frontman Mikee Goodman is joined by Alias' vocalist Joe Rosser for a unique double-vocal attack. The band also welcomed guest singer Spencer Sotelo from Periphery as SikTh's first ever guest performer on an album, cementing the relationship formed between the bands on their US tour in 2016.
Following their reformation at the UK's legendary Download Festival in 2014, SikTh have been teasing the metal scene with the release of mini-album Opacities in 2015, a support tour in the UK for Slipknot, their first ever US tour as the main support for Periphery, and a 6-week tour at the beginning of 2017 as the main support for Trivium in Europe and the UK. The band also released a deluxe edition of their most popular album Death of a Dead Day on its 10th anniversary through Peaceville in 2016.
Kicking off The Future In Whose Eyes? album campaign in February, the single No Wishbones became an instant favourite with streaming platforms; Spotify placed the track on their popular curated playlists New Metal Tracks, Top Tracks in Metal and Got Djent?; iTunes selected the single for their Hot Tracks in Metal promotions in both the UK and the US; and Deezer chose the track for their Metal New Releases playlist.
Mikee commented on the new album: Personally I feel this is our best album yet. The band has made incredible music, brutal, technically warped and also some psychedelic moments... we've done something special here. The SikTh frontman explained the artwork, created by Meats Meier, whose credits include the film Hellboy and TOOL: Meats Meier is an absolute genius, a visionary and a pioneer. We wanted something really special and we got it; the inspiration was the title itself, the constant evolution of humanity and the self-destructive nature of man."1. Vivid

Live On Fire (Awaiting Repress)Colored Triple Vinyl Set of This Amazing Live Show!
Despite having planned his career meticulously over the past 25 years or so, even in the camp of German hard rock master Axel Rudi Pell surprises cannot be ruled out: Before playing in front of a sold-out Cologne crowd on the second leg of his wildly successful Circle Of The Oath tour, the opportunity arose for taping the whole show, with cameras being all over. Well, Axel gave it a try. And that was a good move. Ten years after his last live album Knights Live (2002), you can - again - be a witness of a complete concert from the Bochum-based guitar virtuoso and his German-American all-star band. To round out the Axel Rudi Pell live package, the recording of the co-headlining gig at last year's Rock Of Ages festival was added to Live On Fire, the name of his newest live oeuvre.
Obviously, a live album doesn't have the same importance and significance as a new studio output, but it nevertheless is a perfect snapshot in time, because 2012 was the most successful year in Axel Rudi Pell's solo career by far. Circle Of The Oath, album No. 14, was released on March 23 and rode high on the charts all over Europe: in his homeland Germany, the critically acclaimed disc made it up to No. 16 in the first week, Switzerland welcomed good old Axel on No. 30, Austria on No. 55, Norway on No. 69 and in Sweden he went up to No. 51. And last but not least, he received another gold award for selling out three consecutive nights at the famous Zeche venue in his native Bochum. Apart from that, he rocked the summer crowds at the legendary Sweden Rock and Wacken Open Air festivals, as well as the open-air Rock Of Ages in Germany together with his band.
Even though Axel loves the composing part at home and the recording business in the studio, home is where the heart is and that's being on stage. Being musically socialized in the Golden Age of hard rock (the Seventies) he's probably a bigger fan of live albums than he would admit. As they say: applause is the performer's meat and drink. But without sometimes being anarchistic spontaneously and playing with the audience's emotions, without the sweat coming off the ceiling and the priceless energy being trapped in the middle of an adventure that is called live concert, when the lights go down and every amp is on fire - the life of a true rocker would be incomplete. Speaking of which: besides his success, Axel Rudi Pell has always been that down-to-earth guy and mainly the fan he was turned into when he first heard DEEP PURPLE's Fireball back in the day. With Live On Fire, he accomplishes a long-desired wish and gives his fans what they desperately want for quite some time.
No surprise at all that the main focus is set on the newbies: here's the striking chords of fast and furious opener Ghost In The Black, the hard rocking pounding of Before I Die and without a doubt one of Axel's best songs written in a decade: the brilliant Circle Of The Oath, which would make Jimmy Page cry out loud. But there's more to listen to on Live On Fire: the passion for medleys (The Masquerade Ball/Casbah/Dreaming Dead) combined with some all-time classics here and there (ZEPPELIN's Whole Lotta Love or PURPLE's Mistreated).1. Floodland (Awaiting Repress)Goth-Rock Milestone Defined by Majestic Soundscapes and Ethereal Melodies
Meat Loaf Producer Jim Steinman and New York Choral Society Among Collaborators on Vast-Reaching LP
Lush, Huge, Balanced: LP Mastered on Mobile Fidelitys World-Renowned Mastering System and Pressed at RTI
1987 Effort Includes Insurmountably Influential Opus The Corrosion
The Sisters of Mercy emerged from a brief hiatus and lineup overhaul in spectacularly grand fashion on Floodland, an epic album that stands as the groups commercial breakthrough as well as one of the periods monumental productions. Having witnessed his bandmates leave, singer Andrew Eldritch recruited bassist Patricia Morrison, utilized a groundbreaking drum machine, and hooked up with Meat Loaf collaborator Jim Steinman to attain a glorious, bombastic, and irrepressible marriage of gothic rock and sumptuous balladry.
Mastered on Mobile Fidelitys world-renowned mastering system and pressed at RTI, this Silver Label LP improves the records splendid dynamic contrasts, low-end thrust, expansive dimensionality, and moody atmospherics. Steinmans unforgettable sonic contributions finally receive proper due in the form of towering choruses and operatic heft. The groups signature epic The Corrosion, described by Eldritch as a narrative about power in the face of misery, sounds downright staggering, with an awe-inspiring performance by the New York Chorale Society and blooming classicism.
Throughout, the Sisters of Mercy traverse myriad styles in breaking down goth-rock conventions. As on the bands noisier debut First and Last and Always, also available on Silver Series LP, brooding emotions, nocturnal episodes, and dim sentiments gloss over the songwriting. Yet there's a colossal amplification of evocative spirituality, delicate accents and anthemic riffs that combine with funky drum-machine beats and visceral tension to yield music that dares listeners not to dance and/or lift their hands skyward.
Rhythms play as large a role as the leaders trademark stentorian vocals, with thundering grooves and crashing percussion illuminating incisive lyrics and industrial-tinted scenery. Whether felt via the dramatic waves of Lucretia My Reflection, balladic sweep of 1959, or charging protest of Dominion/Mother Russia, Floodland is a touchstone, topped off by iconic cover art that fits in with todays vampire-obsessed society as well as it did upon release in 1987.

UNIM-FAN-1165xEddie Lockjaw Davis
Eddie 'Lockjaw' Davis Cookbook Vol. 1Eddie Lockjaw Davis and Shirley Scott set an enduring standard for tenor saxophone/organ groups, beginning with this their first recording together. Davis' authoritative, hard swinging style came through his seasoning as a key player in the Count Basie band. Scott, an accomplished pianist, took up the organ when she joined Davis in 1955, emerging with her distinctive, driving yet subtle style virtually fully formed. The music on this 1958 date holds few surprises; it's meat and potatoes all the way, but it's made using the choicest ingredients. The barbecue sauce is applied in moderation, as the band steers closer to Basie-style swing than to overt R&B riffing. Davis and his working band -- Scott and drummer Arthur Edgehill -- are joined here by reed player Jerome Richardson and bassist George Duvivier. Richardson, playing flute on most tracks, provides a useful complement to Davis' tenor. Duvivier is indispensable in anchoring the music with a commanding walking bass. Edgehill's quick, light touch helps maintain the swinging, jazzy feel. The tracks comprise three strong Davis originals, two standards, including But Beautiful, which ranks as a master class in ballad playing, and the albums's centerpiece, the 12-minute plus In the Kitchen. This slow blues by Johnny Hodges has room for extended soloing all around in a performance that underlines the skill, passion and artistry that made the Davis and Scott partnership a potent and influential combination.

Blood MoneyBlood Money is based on the socio/political play Woyzeck, originally written by a young German poet Georg Buchner as a spare, cinematic piece in 1837 and inspired by the true story of a German soldier who was driven mad by bizarre army medical experiments and infidelity, which led him to murder his lover. Waits, along with wife and collaborator Kathleen Brennan, wrote songs for an avant-garde production of Woyzeck directed by Robert Wilson, which premiered in November 2000 at the Betty Nansen Theater in Copenhagen and went on to win Denmark's version of the Tony for Best Musical. The album careens from the brutal to the tender with assaulting rhythms and romantic melodies. It's a grim musical deposition on the human condition, a dark mortality play where Tin Pan Alley meets the Weimer Republic.Blood Money is flesh and bone, earthbound, said Waits. The songs are rooted in reality: jealousy, rage, the human meat wheel...They are more carnal. I like a beautiful song that tells you terrible things. We all like bad news out of a pretty mouth. I like songs to sound as though they've been aging in a barrel and distressed.1. Misery Is the River
