    USA (Pure Pleasure)

For the most part, this is a 1961 session wherein the blues raconteur and pianist Memphis Slim runs through a good chunk of his repertoire, the songs that came to mind that afternoon. As such, it's relaxed entertainment, rather than a fixed recording for a larger audience. Which is not to say an audience can't enjoy this music. Slim's piano playing is dynamically rich, delicate at times, and pounding when necessary. His vocals are strong, too, but just as capable of dropping down to just above a whisper to make a point. They just don't make records like this anymore, documents of an artist at work without any attempt to be outside the moment.

    Musicians:

    • Memphis Slim (vocal, piano)

    • Jazz Gillum (vocal, harmonica)

    • Arbee Stidham (vocal, guitar)

Recording: January 1961 at Nola Penthouse Studios, New York City by Bob d'Orleans

    Production: Nat Hentoff

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Since the early 1950s, Willie Dixon has been the studio kingpin of Chicago blues, having written, produced, and played bass on countless classics by Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Otis Rush, Koko Taylor, and many others. Dixon has always managed to find time away from the studio to work as a performer, slapping his upright bass and singing his own tunes in a highly compelling, conversational baritone. He was working the coffeehouse circuit with pianist Memphis Slim when he cut this, his first album as a leader, in 1959. Besides his unique interpretations of "Nervous" and "Built for Comfort," it includes eight lesser-known compositions from Dixon's prolific pen. It is unlike all other albums by Dixon, as he and Slim are accompanied, not by the usual crew of Chicago blues players, but by a group of New York mainstream jazzmen, including tenor saxophonist Hal Ashby, guitarist Wally Richardson and drummer Gus Johnson.

RARE Memphis Slim LP, recorded in Paris in 1961, and never reissued on vinyl or CD! Although Slim was an incredible vocalist, here the Memphis bluesman chooses let the piano be his voice, leading the audience through various moods-from the sombre "Bluesnik", to the lively "The Hustler". Without so much as a single drum to keep the beat, Slim's tempo never falters as transitions from one genre to the next, for a dizzying and awe-inspiring performance of which only the very best are capable.

An American blues harmonica player, singer and songwriter, from Mississippi. One of the greatest bluesmen ever. His harp, vocals, and songwriting have never been surpassed. All his records are classics, but this one is truly unique - it's the cream of two rare, acoustic albums cut in Denmark in 1963. Gentle, personal blues with brilliant harmonica, accompanied by only Matt Guitar Murphy and Memphis Slim on piano. Original LP listed on Stereophile's Record 2 Die 4 list.

    Policy

Will Butler has been a member of the band Arcade Fire for over 10 years.
This is his first release under his own name.

Policy is American music-in the tradition of the Violent Femmes, The
Breeders, The Modern Lovers, Bob Dylan, Smokey Robinson, The Magnetic
Fields, Ghostface Killah. And John Lennon (I know, but it counts).
Music where the holy fool runs afoul of the casual world.

Policy was recorded in one week in Jimi Hendrix's old living room
(upstairs at Electric Lady Studios). Jeremy Gara played drums; other
musicians contributed woodwinds and backing vocals. Most everything else
    was played by Will.

The song structures are traditional; the arrangements are clean. The music is
experimental only in that it attacks consistency as a requirement for sincerity.
The songs are angry, loving, joking, tired, honest, idiotic. They clash against
each other but also fit and work together-as if a blind watchmaker made a
Frankenstein watch that came alive and told extremely accurate time while
having conflicting feelings about its creator. No, about creation itself. But
then the watch makes friends with a talking rat, and they go on hilarious
adventures until it turns out that the rat was dead the whole time. With a
really good credits song-I mean, the whole soundtrack is excellent. You
    should check it out.

    Yours truly,

    Memphis Slim

The Original Atlantic Soul Masters 180g Audiophile Vinyl Series Continues..

As a young teenager growing up in Memphis, Tennessee, Booker T. Jones had the amazing talent to play a number of instruments and he played them well. Mastering them well enough to land him work at the famous Stax Records label as a sideman, while still attending high school. It was during this time he met up with future guitar legend Steve Cropper and drummer great Al Jackson and later formed the Stax wrecking crew known as Booker T. & The M.G.s.

This amazing quartet, whom later added the amazing Donald Duck Dunn on bass went on to record a treasure trove of funk, soul and rock masterpieces, which have gone on to become some of the greatest sides ever waxed in modern soul history! With chart topping soul rockers like Green Onions, Red Beans And Rice and Hip Hug-Her, the good folks at Atlantic honored this famed quartet with their own greatest hits album, the magnificent The Best Of Booker T. & The M.G.s in 1968. This original album has been out of print for many years, and for several decades in the vinyl format...that is until now.

Friday Music is proud to offer the original Atlantic Records masterpiece The Best Of Booker T. & The M.G.s for the first time on 180g Audiophile Vinyl. Mastered impeccably from the original Atlantic Records tapes by Joe Reagoso at Friday Music Studios with Kevin Gray.

Born in New Orleans in 1940 as Malcom John Rebennack, he eventually took the stage name of Dr. John and went on to become a legendary songwriter, pianist and guitarist whose iconic music combines blues, jazz, boogie woogie, Cajun and rock n' roll influences. At an early age he was exposed to burgeoning rock artists such as Little Richard, Guitar Slim, James Booker, Earl King and Professor Longhair, all who played a big influence on Dr. John's developing style. In 1965 he moved to Los Angeles where he became a "first call" session musician in the LA studio scene in the 1960s and 70s and was part of the "Wrecking Crew" stable of studio musicians. He backed up Sonny & Cher, Canned Heat, Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention and many others. By the mid-1960s, Rebennack's fascination and preoccupation with New Orleans voodoo culture helped to influence and develop the idea for what would become the Dr. John persona which would define him for the rest of his career.

By 1968 he started to gain fame as a solo-artist using the persona of Dr. John the Night Tripper and featuring elaborate costumes and stage shows influenced by Screamin' Jay Hawkins act. Gris-Gris was Dr. John's debut album for Atco Records and is ranked #143rd on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list. He recorded three more albums for Atco: Babylon (1969), Remedies (1970) and The Sun, Moon and Herbs (1971) that all followed suit with voodoo influences and New Orleans traditional music. By 1971, Dr. John had gained a notable cult following that included artists such as Eric Clapton and Mick Jagger, both of whom took part in the Sun, Moon and Herbs sessions. He is best known for his recordings done between the years 1972-1974 and Dr. John's Gumbo cut in 1972 is considered a cornerstone of New Orleans music. The single from the album, "Iko, Iko" broke into the Billboard Hot 100 chart reaching #71. The album was ranked 404 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time List. In 1973, produced by Allen Toussaint and backed by the Meters, Dr. John released the seminal New Orleans funk album, In The Right Place. Rooted in solid R&B it reached #24 on the Billboard album chart anchored by the hit single, "Right Place Wrong Time" that peaked at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart and has gone on to become a heavily played staple on classic rock radio to this day. Dr. John has recorded more than 20 albums and is the winner of six Grammy® Awards. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011 and continues to tour and record to this day.
