After The PartyFor their fifth full-length After the Party, The Menzingers set
out to make the quintessential jukebox record: an unstoppably melodic
album primed for bar-room sing-alongs. Delivering anthemic
harmonies, furious power chords, and larger-than-life melodies, the
Philadelphia-based garage-punk four-piece amply fulfills that mission
while achieving something much more deeply nuanced. With its
delicately crafted storytelling and everyman romanticism, After the
Party ultimately proves to be a wistful but life-affirming reflection
on getting older but not quite growing up.
"We spent our 20s living in a rowdy kind of way, and now we're at a
point where it seems like everyone in our lives is moving in different
directions," says Tom May, who joined fellow singer/guitarist
Greg Barnett, bassist Eric Keen, and drummer Joe Godino in forming
The Menzingers as teenagers in their hometown of Scranton. With
each song unfolding as its own fully realized story, After the Party
came to life thanks largely to an introspective yet outward-looking
lyrical sensibility on the part of Barnett and May.

Become the Teeth) and recorded in Yip's Conshohocken, Pennsylvania-based
Studio 4, After the Party finds the band breaking into new
sonic terrain. The Menzingers' most refined album to date, After
the Party was also shaped from an intensive writing and pre-production
process that involved holing up for five weeks in Yip's
studio. Along with sculpting more expansive arrangements, the band
focused on experimenting with new effects and production techniques

On The Impossible PastScranton-raised, Philadelphia-based punk rock outfit The Menzingers drop their Epitaph debut On the Impossible Past, after two acclaimed albums on small indies. Rented WorldPhiladelphia-based band The Menzingers will release their new album Rented World via Epitaph Records. Rented World is the fourth studio release for the band and the follow-up to their critically-applauded album On The Impossible Past (2012).
In Remission is the first track from the new album, and one where the band observes, Maybe the future's just a little bit weird; a statement that sets the tone of Rented World.
The Rust Belt punks are in a crucial period of growth. Now in their mid-20s, members Greg Barnett (guitar/vocals), Tom May (guitar/vocals), Eric Keen (bass), and Joe Godino (drums), seek a greater wisdom in life, even if they are old enough to know better. A theme that strongly permeates throughout the album.
Things start to feel a little more serious, said May. When we were younger we wrote fiery songs because at that age it's your world view. Now I look at the world and think 'well, maybe I'm not right all the time.'
Another change for the former Scranton, Pennsylvania housemates is their studio location. They entered Miner Street Studio for the first time in Fishtown, Philly in the fall of 2013. Jonathan Low, whose rich Americana influences can be heard on his work with The National, Sharon Van Etten, and Kurt Vile was enlisted to engineer the album. When writing the new material, the band recognized their shifts in their craft, shifts they knew would best be handled by Low. "We wanted to go to somebody who wasn't used to recording punk records, though it wasn't in a pretentious way, like we wanted to become an indie rock band, stated May.
The end result is an album that fearlessly collides the snarl of emo with grungy, 90s grit and exploring the celestial expanse of post-rock. Poets Were My HeroesMorning Glory is made up of the stuff that the gritty, punk-crust motherland of New York's infamous Lower East Side has been known to spawn. This group of punkers and squatters had very humble beginnings indeed. Already in various other New York punk bands, Morning Glory first became the spark of an idea when Ezra Kire (Leftöver Crack, Choking Victim, INDK) took time off from touring and started to write some tunes in his NYC apartment.
In 2001, with nothing but a drum machine and an 8-track reel-to-reel, Ezra wrote and recorded the songs that would become Morning Glory's first LP, This Is No Time ta Sleep. Though it was self-recorded, home-released and had no touring support, it still managed to create a small but ubiquitous underground buzz. With a virtuosic range of musical elements such as ska, punk, metal, and even some rhyming, its catchy, anthemic sing-alongs showcased Ezra's flourishing writing talents. And while his lyrics stayed true to the caustic political edge of his other bands, the overall message remained more optimistic and leaned towards the humanistic, personal side of life.
In 2002, Ezra finally assembled a live band, handpicking musicians from the local NYC punk scene, including members of Nausea, World/Inferno Friendship Society and Stockyard Stoics. This lineup recorded the EP, The Whole World is Watching, released on Blacknoise Records in 2003. While the years that followed were spent recording and touring with Leftöver Crack, Morning Glory took a back seat.
But after these long years of touring, Ezra finally decided to give Morning Glory the attention it deserved in 2010 and began writing songs for what was to become the epic new album, Poets Were My Heroes. In the summer of 2011, Ezra and the band (with longtime members Early Gates, "Metal" Chris and Lucky Strano alongside new guitarist Adam Schrager) hit the studio with a barrage of new material. Picture the sonic kaleidoscope of punk noise meeting strings, horns, choirs, pianos and organs over a web of distorted guitars and marching, single kick pedal drums.
These are the sounds that make up Poets Were My Heroes, Morning Glory's Fat Wreck Chords debut and first full-length album recorded with a live band. Re-enlisting producer Jesse Cannon (The Menzingers, Saves the Day), a wealth of material was recorded, with only the very strongest songs being chosen to make up the album. It is both grand and elaborate, with each song evoking a different mood and style, challenging the musicianship of even the most dexterous players, while still maintaining its punk-inspired simplicity.
While the band itself has described themselves as "somewhere between Oasis and The Clash," they continue to break rules and write music that is true only to themselves, adhering to no genres, creeds or political factions. The sing-along choruses give the band a broader appeal than the standard politi-kill punk acts, but the key message is more subversive: "Think for yourself, decide for yourself, make up your own mind and love your friends. Only you know what is right for you. Together we are what we can't be alone." It's this unity in diversity that makes the band special and not just another punk outfit.
