Live It Out (Awaiting Repress)Live It Out is the second album released by the Canadian indie rock band Metric. It was originally released in September 27, 2005 on Last Gang Records.
Toronto's Metric has the ability to appeal to fans on a number of levels: the group captures the likeability of Elastica with the cheekiness of Blondie and then mixes that new wave style with just enough of a growling guitar to give it some oomph. Since their last release, the acclaimed Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?, Metric's sound has morphed slightly; this follow-up is a little more guitar-based and slightly less electronic than their last, a move likely to broaden their fan base even further.
Metric's rock-meets-new-wave is not only timely, it is joyful to boot. The driving track Handshakes could easily qualify for the next ipod commercial, while Monster Hospital's retro punk style has a Clash-inspired chorus that will stay in your head for days. By the same token, the band's musical diversity is especially evident in the beautiful The Police and the Private, where one could easily imagine that they are listening to an up-tempo Sarah Harmer track. Metric's cross-genre appeal is at least party due to frontwoman Emily Haines' delivery. A smart writer and performer, Haines' contributions to the Broken Social Scene collective have already made her voice somewhat familiar, and in her own element she shines especially bright. It's time: Emily Haines is back with Fatal Gift - the first listen from Choir of the Mind, the Metric singer's first release as her Soft Skeleton solo project in a decade.
Haines' vocals are definitely the focal point of Choir of the Mind. She used her voice to create spellbinding orchestrations for an effect that is subtle and ghostly on Wounded, lush on Fatal Gift and deeply powerful on Legend Of the Wild Horse, which she calls her soft anthem. Haines' voice is the only audible instrument on Strangle All Romance, and she creates mesmerizing layers that drift and swirl through the title track, which includes a spoken word part adapted from a poem by the Indian mystic Sri Aurobindo.
Haines recorded Choir of the Mind over several weeks in September And October of 2016, more or less alone in Metric's Toronto studio with a borrowed 18-foot grand piano built in 1850. Her longtime musical partner/Metric bandmate, James Shaw, helped flesh out the sonics with various instruments and rhythmic elements. Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World SoundtrackOn Red Vinyl!
The soundtracks to movies adapted from comic books are often marketing free-for-alls; promoting bands takes precedence over choosing songs that make sense for the film. However, nothing could be further from the truth for Scott Pilgrim vs. the World's music. Since so much of the comic revolves around the bands that the characters play in, the film was already somewhat protected from having a bunch of random songs crammed into its soundtrack, but the film's creative team ensured that the music was done right. Director Edgar Wright's other films (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, etc.) boast soundtracks that brim with personality onscreen and play more like mixtapes than albums in their own right; that feeling continues here with picks like Beachwood Sparks' By Your Side, T. Rex's Teenage Dream, and Frank Black's I Heard Ramona Sing.
The musicians who bring the comic's bands to life are just as cleverly chosen. Beck revisited his slacker-punk roots with the songs he wrote for Scott's band Sex Bob-Omb; though they're performed by Michael Cera and the other actors in the film, Threshold, Summertime, and Garbage Truck still have Beck's gloriously messy early-`90s vibe to them. Later, he contributes Ramona, a dreamy ballad that sounds more like his 2000s work. Meanwhile, Broken Social Scene are Crash and the Boys, the rival band whose I'm So Sad, So Very Very Sad lasts a whopping five seconds. Every part of the soundtrack shows how much care went into it, from choosing artists like Broken Social Scene and Metric to nod to the story's Canadian setting, to the 8-bit version of Threshold that reflects Pilgrim's immersion in video games. The sweetest detail may be the song that started it all: Scott Pilgrim, by the Canadian all-female band Plumtree from their 1997 album Predicts the Future, holds within it all the breathless true love and crunchy guitar goodness that sparked the comic.

Eight And A HalfJustin Peroff of Broken Social Scene plus Dave Hamelin and Liam O'Neil of The Stills equals Eight and a Half. When Broken Social Scene first emerged out of Toronto 10 years ago, a great deal of the band's success was attributed to the fact that most of its individual members had ties to other bands, or boasted established solo careers. Peroff, the band's drummer since 2000, was not without extracurricular pursuits of his own (acting, DJing, party promotion), but had never released music outside of the BSS banner. By 2009, the urge to explore something new was proving ever more impossible to suppress.
Hamelin and O'Neil were old friends of Peroff's, Broken Social Scene and The Stills had shared stages as far back as 2003, but they weren't necessarily the most logical choice of collaborators: after all, Peroff was splitting his time between his temporary home in Los Angeles and recording sessions in Chicago for Broken Social Scene's Forgiveness Rock Record, while Hamelin and O'Neil were in the thick of touring for The Stills' 2008 album, Oceans Will Rise, and living in their native Montreal when off the road.
However, over the course of several phone calls and emails, the trio realized they all shared a desire to create music that was distinctively different than the big-tent anthems their primary bands were known for, so much so that Peroff was willing to spend much of 2009 hopping back and forth between L.A., Chicago and Montreal to get this new, more electronically focused project off the ground, if only in fits and starts.
What a difference a year makes, fast forward to the end of 2010 and Peroff was calling Toronto home once again, after Broken Social Scene completed its marathon Forgiveness Rock Record tour. And fortuitously enough, O'Neil and Hamelin had also become fellow residents, albeit for markedly different reasons: the former was hired to engineer Metric's follow-up to Fantasies at the band's Toronto-based Giant Studios, while the latter relocated after his girlfriend scored a new job in the city. O'Neil and Hamelin also suddenly found themselves with a lot of spare time on their hands: following a fall 2010 tour with Kings of Leon, The Stills had unceremoniously disbanded.
And so the conditions were in place to elevate Eight and a Half from sideline recording project to a primary concern for those involved. And each member seized the opportunity to reinvent himself: where Peroff's steady back beat has always provided the solid foundation atop which Broken Social Scene could freely experiment, with Eight and a Half his drumming is thoroughly deconstructed, as reliant on electronic programming and looped breaks as live performance.
O'Neil, traditionally a piano and horn player, focused on coaxing strange sounds and eerie ambience out of synthesizers and samplers. And Hamelin, who attempted a more rootsy, conversational style of singing as The Stills' secondary vocalist, pushed himself to croon in a higher register, and adopt a more confessional, emotionally naked mode of songwriting to better complement the minimal, mechanized productions.
Though Eight and a Half's formation precedes The Stills' dissolution, it's tempting to interpret these songs from the melancholic desolation of "Scissors," to where-did-it-all-go-wrong self-examination of "Go Ego," to the turn-a-new-leaf pledge "The Turn Around," as a direct response to their demise. But the vulnerability, doubt and resignation embedded in Hamelin's voice and words are easily transferrable to anyone who's invested years of their life into something special only to watch it vanish in an instant.
And Hamelin's recovery process, as well as Eight and a Half's own evolution from piecemeal recording project into proper flesh-and-blood band, is mirrored in the album's sequential shift from darkness to light: what begins as a chilly, claustrophobic and insular experience gradually opens up into a widescreen, kaleidoscopic splendor, spanning the mountainous surge of "Took A Train to India," the exuberant digital psychedelia of "Two Points" and the climactic/ecstatic curtain closer "Oh, My Head."1. Unique Leader Records confirms that French death metal legion, KRONOS, will drop their Arisen New Era long player upon the masses. Recorded, mixed and mastered by David Potvin at Dome Studios (Lyzanxia, Arcania, Under The Abyss etc.) in Angers, France, the band's latest slab of audio menace features nine scalding tracks of unrelenting barbarity adorned in the distinctive cover art of Pierre Alain (Withering Soul, Silentlie, Cyrax etc.).
A name derived from the Greek god of time, Kronos (or Cronus), father of Zeus, KRONOSwas forged over fifteen years ago and quickly established a name for themselves based solely on their musical unity of harmony and violence. Featuring a continuous textual reference to the gods of ancient civilizations, KRONOS punctures ears with a heightened level of dynamics accomplished by only by a select number of bands. It all began in a small town in the Northeastern province of Alsace-Lorraine. Following various lineup shifts and musical experimentation, the pandemonium squad recorded their first demo in 2000. One year later, KRONOS would unleash their Titan's Awakening debut. Produced entirely by the band, the lethal creation lead to a union with French imprint Warpath Records. Second offering, Colossal Titan Strife was discharged in 2004 to the applause of underground critics in the proverbial know. Metal Crypt commended the band's "diversified guitar work intricate drum patterns wicked guitar solos and.. good number of catchy yet non-compromising hooks," further insisting, "This French outfit is definitely worth checking out," while Sputnik Music championed, "an impressive album that shows off the capabilities of death metal done right. KRONOSmanaged to pack a metric ton of creativity into each song and you will barely hear the same riff twice." Added Last Rites simply, "worth your time if you need some solid, well-produced death metal." Third offspring, The Hellenic Terror, emerged in April 2007 and served as an attestation of the band's enormous capacity for skilled execution and originality. Stravinsky: Violin Concerto (Speakers Corner)For many years Stravinsky was reluctant to write a concerto for the violin. He felt he was too unfamiliar with the instrument and its particular properties, and it would be too problematic and too much of a challenge to create a large work for the violin. That he finally acquiesced is due in part to persuasion from Paul Hindemith and support from the violinist Samuel Dushkin, who gave him valuable advice during its development.
With its four-movement form and the descriptive titles of the movements -Toccata, Aria and Capriccio - the Violin Concerto in D testifies to Stravinsky's intensive preoccupation with Baroque forms, which he employs with rhythmic and metric imagination and irony. Stravinsky himself said that the work stinked of violin, but the orchestra is also very present so that one is reminded of a concerto grosso. The author Ernst MÜller (Analogue Audio Association Bulletin) praised the work euphorically, especially for its revelatory character and the tremendous dynamics of this Columbia recording. About Speakers Corner
At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.
During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.
A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.
We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.
We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

Fire MusicDanko Jones has announced the release of FIRE MUSIC via Bad Taste Records/MRI. The new album is loaded with some of the most incendiary, fierce, and downright pissed-off songs the band has ever committed to tape. In the past, Danko Jones' repertoire has frequently exhibited a physical and emotional release for those times when love is unkind, but with these songs the trio exhibits what happens when therapy doesn't work. ReckonPolitical. Personal. Poetic. Such is the new album Reckon from one of Canada's most renowned songwriters, Jason Collett. Recorded at Revolution Recording Studios in Toronto, the album was produced by Howie Beck and includes guest appearances by Afie Jurvanen (Bahamas), Basia Bulat, Kevin Drew and Zeus. An 11-song retrospective titled Essential Cuts will be released as a companion to Reckon as a digital download in the vinyl package. Chosen by Jason himself Essential Cuts represent the sense of community that he has always held in such high regard.
There is a poetic serendipity to the fact that Jason Collett started recording Reckon during the same month that Occupy Wall Street began. Not necessarily setting out to make a record with these overtones, his travels and political engagements lead to the subject matter being unavoidable. "The consistent thread throughout this record is loss," he explains. "The love songs are largely emotive reflections of the 'political' songs. All written through the distillation of events since the economic calamity of 2008 and it's insidiously long looming shadow. I've seen first hand the kind of devastation this crisis has wrecked upon much of the world I've toured these last few years. The shut-down-shops and foreclosed homes on the suburban fringes as I've made my way to and from cities I've played. This record is a personal reflection of the crisis we've all witnessed and read about every day in the paper. Calling it Reckon is an acknowledgement of loss ... lost jobs, lost homes, loss of faith in our political and financial institutions and in turn, loss of illusion."
The Essential Cuts album is more or less a family affair featuring everyone from Amy Millan (Stars), Zeus, Feist, Emily Haines (Metric), Bahamas and more as well as production from long time friends Andrew Cash and Howie Beck. I'm Glad I'm Not Me was recorded at Mission Sound (Metric, Arctic Monkeys, Matt & Kim) in Brooklyn, NY and was produced by Jon Kaplan (Cage The Elephant, Walk The Moon) and co-produced by Born Cages' lead singer Vlad Holiday. On the album, Holiday, bassist/keyboardist Matt Maroulakos and drummer Dave Tantao conjure festival-ready, truly modernist modern rock that is every bit as grand as its song titles would predict: "Bigger Than Me." "I Just Want The Truth, Baby." "Don't Look Back." "Finding Beauty in a Broken World."
I'm Glad I'm Not Me touches on rock, electronic, dance, alternative and everything in between, reaching listeners thought to be quarantined from each other. It's a record celebrating togetherness in fractious times, music that finds commonalities rather than chasms. Throughout, Born Cages play with an urgency that posits their music as something essential. I'm Glad I'm Not Me embraces its punchy hooks, economic arranging and distinct kind of New York City disillusionment; it's the despondency of being told your mere existence in the city is a sign of having "made it" and still feeling alone amongst the millions.
The album is the follow up to their critically acclaimed 2013 EP release, The Sidelines EP. Lead singer and guitarist Vlad Holiday formed Born Cages in 2011 and the group dove head-first into New York City's eclectic indie rock movement. He is joined by Matt Maroulakos on bass/keyboards and Dave Tantao on drums. The band has shared bills with a bevy of acts such as Hockey, Magic Man, X Ambassadors, Gold Fields, Royal Teeth, Said The Whale, Donald Cumming (of The Virgins), Public Access TV, JD Samson (of Le Tigre) and Har Mar Superstar.
