    Strange Peace

Since releasing their self-titled debut record in 2012, which The New
Yorker called, "One of the year's best albums a punishing, noisy,
exhilarating thing," the Toronto-based 3-piece METZ have garnered
international acclaim as one of the most electrifying and forceful live acts,
touring widely and extensively, playing hundreds of shows each year around
    the world.

Now, Alex Edkins (guitar, vocals), along with Hayden Menzies (drums), and
Chris Slorach (bass) are set to unleash their highly-anticipated third
full-length album, Strange Peace, an emphatic but artful hammer swing to
    the status quo.

The best punk isn't an assault as much as it's a challenge - to what's
normal, to what's comfortable, or simply to what's expected. Teetering on
the edge of perpetual implosion," NPR wrote in their glowing review of
    METZ's 2015 second album, II.

Strange Peace was recorded in Chicago, live off the floor to tape with Steve
Albini. The result is a distinct artistic maturation into new and alarming
territory, frantically pushing past where the band has gone before, while
capturing the notorious intensity of their live show. The trio continued to
assemble the album (including home recordings, additional
instrumentation) in their hometown, adding the finishing touches with
longtime collaborator, engineer and mixer, Graham Walsh.

Strange Peace isn't merely a collection of eleven uninhibited and urgent
songs. It's also a kind of sonic venting, a truculent social commentary that
bludgeons and provokes, excites and unsettles. With all the pleasurable
tension and anxiety of a fever dream, Strange Peace is equal parts
challenging and accessible. It is this implausible balancing act, moving
from one end of the musical spectrum to the other, that only a band of
METZ's power and capacity can maintain: discordant and melodic,
powerful and controlled, meticulous and instinctive, subtle and complex,
precise and reckless, wholehearted and merciless, brutal and optimistic,
    terrifying and fun.

"Their whiplash of distortion is made with precision, a contained chaos.
But you would never talk about them like that. Because METZ are not
something you study or analyze," wrote Liisa Ladouceur in Exclaim! "They
are something you feel: a transfer of energy, pure and simple." In other
words: to feel something, fiercely and intensely, but together, not alone.

    METZ: II

"I look at it like this," METZ frontman Alex Edkins says. "You
start a band, just as something to do, because music's what
makes you tick, the thing you dream about and think about and
that's it. You never think that you'll be able to do it all the time.
But then, for some inexplicable reason, people actually listen
and latch on and the band begins to take on new meaning. All
of a sudden there are expectations and pressure, real or
imagined, to change who you are. It was important to us, when
making this record, not to give in to that pressure."

What happens when a seemingly irresistible force meets an
immovable object is a serviceable metaphor for the music
METZ creates, both live and on record. Now behold II, the
concussive new full-length from what is arguably North
America's finest touring rock band. Written and recorded in
2014, after two years of constant touring behind their rightly
adored self-titled debut, II is METZ at their most true to
form-as pure an expression of what they do as can currently
be committed to tape. The guitars are titanic, the drums
ill-tempered, the vocals chilling, and the volume worrisome.

From the exhilarating grind of "Spit You Out" to the blunt-force
thrills of "Landfill," herein reside 10 songs as uncompromising
in their ferocity and abrasiveness as any collection this record
label has had the pleasure of releasing to date. While the
band's debut was often "clean and clinical," II is what Edkins
describes as a "much heavier, darker, and sloppier" affair, with
many of its roughest edges and ugliest tones kept intact. Its
lyrical matter, Edkins notes, stems from a year of loss and
doubt, of contemplating our relationships with death and the
planet. "I consider myself a pretty massive pessimist, but a
pessimist who knows how lucky he is," he says. "A lot of things
    in everyday life drive me crazy: how we relate to each other;
how politics, media, technology, money and medication
influence our lives. This band, in a lot of ways, is an outlet."

What we're left with is the sound of an already monstrous band
improving in both subtle and terrifying ways.

    Replicant

With a battery of custom built software instruments, samples, and 7 live lopers, Christopher Tignor and master percussionist Theo Metz saturate our senses with new colors reflecting the urgent vitality of their South Bronx neighborhood. At times the two seem to lock talons like eagles in a death spiral, as Metz's brutal percussive athleticism keeps pace with Tignor's machines in an aural game of chicken.

    Mourning Trance

Mourning Trance is a record about loss and family, but also about coping and finding a way to enjoy life through all of the exhaustion. It's an album about waking up every morning, working eight hours, and still finding a way to celebrate surviving another day.

In Still Life Still's case, that way was the only one the band knows - writing and playing music with best friends.

The album was recorded and produced in Toronto by Alex Bonenfant (Crystal Castles, Metz) the result of that process is a weird, beautiful pop record, inspired by, and in honour of the brilliance and absurdity of real life. Those bittersweet experiences continue to be what drives the band and record.

    Hunters

    Cotton Candy Pink Vinyl

Hunters are excited to announce their signing to Mom + Pop for their debut LP. Since releasing their 2011 EP Hands On Fire, Hunters have been hard at work touring and playing live shows with METZ, Cloud Nothings, A Place To Bury Strangers and The Kills. They've also had breakout performances at last year's CMJ with shows at Brooklyn Vegan's showcase and the FADER FORT. Hunters have also been featured on the cover of the Village Voice along with acclaim from The New York Times, New Yorker, FADER, SPIN, Filter among many others. With a fury of fuzzed out guitars and bodies being strewn across the stage, Derek Watson and Izzy assault the masses with a wave of barely contained chaos.

    Light Information

Nobody cared about their old heads, because the new ones work just fine now, don't they?.... they have the same size mouth and eyes.

The song Old Heads is a sci-fi space anthem to technology that constantly replaces itself, proving both necessary and unnecessary at the same time. It's also a jangly pop gem, a trip through the fantastical that is ultimately warm and relatable. This remarkable coexistence is one of many achievements of Chad VanGaalen's Light Information, his sixth record on Sub Pop.

For an album that's about not feeling comfortable with really anything, as VanGaalen says, Light Information is nonetheless a vivid, welcoming journey through future worlds and relentless memories. The rich soundscapes and sometimes jarring imagery could only come from the mind of a creative polymath--an accomplished visual artist, animator, director, and producer,VanGaalen has scored television shows, designed puppet characters for Adult Swim, directed videos for Shabazz Palaces, Strand of Oaks,METZ, Dan Deacon, and The Head and the Heart, and produced records for Women, Alvvays, and others.

While alienation has always been a theme of VanGaalen's music,Light Information draws on a new kind of wisdom--and anxiety--gained as he watches his kids growing up. Being a parent has given me a sort of alternate perspective, worrying about exposure to a new type of consciousness that's happening through the internet, he says. Throughout the dark-wave reverb of Light Information are stories of paranoia, disembodiment, and isolation--but there's also playfulness, empathy, and intimacy.

The product of six years' work, going back even before 2014's Shrink Dust, Light Information emerged from the experimental instruments that fill VanGaalen's Calgary garage studio. As always, VanGaalen wrote, played, and produced all of the music on Light Information(save Ryan Bourne's bass part on Mystery Elementals and vocals onStatic Shape from his young daughters Ezzy and Pip), and designed the cover art.

Holy Fuck took the world by surprise around 2005 because there was
just nothing like them-a hardcore thrift-store found-object punk
band with a relentless commitment to rhythm and a sense for
atmosphere better matched to a close encounter of the third kind
than a simple rock concert. Think EinstĂśrzende Neubauten re-inspired
by Fela Kuti with Brian Eno working as keyboard tech and every
channel on the mixer set to max power. It was the best ride out there
while it lasted, up to and including their 2010 full-length Latin,
recorded largely in too-brief breaks while on the road. That album
cemented Holy Fuck's sound and reputation for unapologetic
instrumental noise but at the end of yet another insane touring cycle,
it was time to take a break which turned into a hiatus which turned
into a chance to explore other projects and production work. (Like the
bands Lids, Dusted and Etiquette, or production for Metz, Alvvays and
    Viet Cong.)

They'd been moving faster than they'd ever expected, especially after
a 2007 sophomore release that came close to securing Canada's
prestigious Juno and Polaris Music Prize. (Not to mention festival slots
at All Tomorrow's Parties, Glastonbury, Coachella and more-plus Lou
Reed said they were the best band he'd seen at SXSW.) The strategy
was just to stay busy, says founder and noisemaster Brian Borcherdt,
but soon they started to feel like Indiana Jones running from that
boulder: "He had to step aside and let things settle!"

But there's nothing Indiana Jones does better than the shock reveal, is
there? And so in 2016 Holy Fuck suddenly announced the release of
Congrats, a surprise full-length two years in the making that is by any
scientific measure their holiest fuckiest release ever: "When you're
sitting still in a van and staring out the windows, you start to dream
about all the other things you want to do," says Borcherdt. "This album
is exactly what we couldn't do then."

Checking into a "proper" studio, rather than the barn in rural Ontario
where most of Holy Fuck's records were made, Congrats was
recorded by the same lineup that recorded Latin: Borcherdt, Graham
Walsh, Matt "Punchy" McQuaid, and Matt Schulz. As they worked, they
discovered that Congrats was a process of refining things, Walsh
says-both physically and philosophically. Their ad hoc arsenal of
low-budget hi-tech toys has been streamlined down to what he calls
the nervous system of the band: "What gets run through our system is
the seed of the idea for our music, and the system is what we play. This
record is almost a beginning-the first stage of a new way for us."

So consider those previous albums prelude to Holy Fuck's true
breakthrough, and recognize Congrats as the moment when Holy
Fuck take the chaos and craziness (and charm) that have always been
at the heart of their band and not so much control it as concentrate it.
Now they're heavier, wilder, leaner, sharper, more daring and more
unpredictable than ever before, on fire with the power of inspired
outsiders like Suicide, Silver Apples, Can, Mission of Burma or the
Monks or even Sun Ra, says Borcherdt, whose pursuit of his own kind
of musical purity is exactly what Holy Fuck are after. Yes, it took them
a few years, which in 2016 is supposed to be the career suicide, but
they took that time to take chances. "We were told we did everything
wrong," Borcherdt says now, laughing-but really Congrats is the
sound of a band doing absolutely everything right.
