    Intoxicated Man / Pink Elephants

Mick Harvey, a long time Nick Cave collaborator and
bandmate (Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds/Crime & The
City Solution) is releasing a remastered double album
collection of his most important solo works to date -
two Serge Gainsbourg albums, Intoxicated Man and
Pink Elephants. The double collection will include
two unreleased tracks, "Dr Jeckyll" and "Run From
    Happiness."

Intoxicated Man (1995) and Pink Elephants(1997)
are Mick Harvey's interpretations of the songs
of legendary singer, songwriter and poet Serge
Gainsbourg - they are the first major works translating
Gainsbourg's influential work from French to English.
Mick Harvey explains, "Translating a great writer is like
walking through a minefield and I set myself the difficult
task of attempting to keep the places of rhyming,
metre and meaning accurate to the originals."

The vocal parts originally sung by Gainsbourg's muses
Jane Birkin, Brigitte Bardot and daughter Charlotte
Gainsbourg are here sung by long time collaborator
Anita Lane - other guests on the albums include
Bertrand Burgalat, Warren Ellis, Nick Cave and David
    McClymont.

In 2013, Mick Harvey and his band performed the
songs of Serge Gainsbourg at the Yeah Yeah Yeahs
curated ATP festival. Mick Harvey will be on tour in
Europe in the spring of 2014.

    Intoxicated Women

It has taken 20 years for Mick Harvey to resume his project of
translating Serge Gainsbourg's songs into English, and following
June's release of Volume 3, Delirium Tremens, Mick Harvey has now
announced the final in the series, Volume 4, Intoxicated Women.

Intoxicated Women contains many duets and songs written by
Gainsbourg, mostly during the 60s, in a period where he was
focusing his songwriting on singers such as France Galle, Juliette
Greco and most famously, Brigitte Bardot.

Mick Harvey explains, "After the initial recordings for Delirium
Tremens, JP Shilo and I continued investigating the duets and female
songs, many of which were unknown to me. So it became a voyage of
discovery into quite a lot of material I hadn't heard before. There are
even a couple of songs for which the only versions existing from the
60s are from TV performances Serge gave." ["The Drowned One" (La
NoyÉe) and "Wolfy Teeth" (Dents de Lait, Dents de Loup)]

The album opens with a stunning version of "Je T'aime (Moi non
plus)" - here titled "Ich Liebe Dich (Ich Dich Auch Nicht)" - rendered
in the sexiest German imaginable by the chanteuse Andrea Schroeder
and culminates with "Cargo Cult," the closing track from the classic
Melody Nelson album. In between, we are treated to a smorgasbord
of Gainsbourg gems in English (with a bit of Khmer thrown in).

    1. Ich Liebe Dich...Ich Dich Auch Nicht (Je T'Aime Moi Non Plus)
    2. All Day Suckers (Les Sucettes)
    3. Contact
    4. PrÉvert's Song (Chanson de PrÉvert)

    Four (Acts Of Love)

Mick Harvey is pleased to announced details for his latest solo album, FOUR (Acts of Love), a follow up to 2011's Sketches from the Book of the Dead, due out via Mute on June 11th, 2013.

This is the sixth studio album from this prolific musician, a man renowned for his career with The Birthday Party and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds as well as for his work with soundtracks (Chopper, To Have And To Hold, Australian Rules). In addition to his solo recordings and his feature length soundtracks his work as a Producer also speaks for itself having worked with Anita Lane, Rowland S Howard and most recently PJ Harvey's Mercury Prize winning album, Let England Shake.

FOUR (Acts of Love) was recorded on two continents at Grace Lane in North Melbourne and Atlantis Sound in Melbourne and features original compositions from Harvey in addition to exciting re-interpreatations of classic hits. Regular

collaborators Rosie Westbrook on double bass and JP Shilo on guitar and violin lent their talent, alongside new collaborators such as PJ Harvey "Glorious."

Harvey takes a turn at revisiting classics such as The Saints 'The Story of Love', Van Morrison's 'The Way Young Lovers Do', Exuma's 'Summertime in New York' and Roy Orbison's 'Wild Hearts (Run Out of Time)'.

FOUR (Acts of Love) is a contemplation on romantic love - its loss and re-awakening, its tumultuous struggle and its place in our universe.

    Delirium Tremens

Delirium Tremens Is The Third Collection Of
    Serge Gainsbourg Reinterpretations By Mick
    Harvey

It was a mixtape made by a Frenchman and handed to Mick
Harvey (Bad Seeds, The Birthday Party, Crime & The City
Solution) in reunified Berlin that first alerted him to the oeuvre
    of Serge Gainsbourg.

Like the rest of us, he'd heard 'Je T'aime (Moi Non Plus)',
but the variety and depth of Gainsbourg's genius took him
aback - so much so that he set about fastidiously translating
the lyrics into English and disseminating the chansons to the
anglophone world with a missionary zeal. The scope of the
    project he undertook was breathtaking.

Mick Harvey explains, "Translating a great writer is like
walking through a minefield and I set myself the difficult
task of attempting to keep the places of rhyming, metre and
meaning accurate to the originals. One or more of these
elements is usually dispensed with in the translating of poetry
and lyrics, but I did not want to iron out any of Gainbourg's
more aberrant angles or lose any of his especially perverse
    and peculair touches."

    1. The Man With The Cabbage Head (L'homme à Tête De Chou)
    2. Deadly Tedium (Ce Mortel Ennui)
    3. Coffee Colour (Couleur Cafe)
    4. The Convict's Song (Chanson de Forçat)
    5. SS C'est Bon (Est-ce Est-ce Si Bon)

    Let England Shake

PJ Harvey's newest album was recorded in a 19th Century church in Dorset, on a cliff-top overlooking the sea. It was created with a cast of musicians including such long-standing allies as Flood, John Parish and Mick Harvey. It is the eighth PJ Harvey album, following 2007's acclaimed White Chalk, and the Harvey/Parish collaboration A Woman A Man Walked By. But what is remarkable about Let England Shake is bound up with its music, its abiding atmosphere, and in particular, its words.

If Harvey's past work might seem to draw on direct emotional experience, this new album is rather different. Its songs center on both her home country, and events further afield in which it has embroiled itself. The lyrics return, time and again, to the matter of war, the fate of the people who must do the fighting, and events separated by whole ages, from Afghanistan to Gallipoli.

The album they make up is not a work of protest, nor of strait-laced social or political comment. It brims with the mystery and magnetism in which she excels. But her lyric-writing in particular has arrived at a new, breathtaking place, in which the human aspects of history are pushed to the foreground. Put simply, not many people make records like this.

    Music From Republik Der Wolfe

Alexander Hacke (EinstÜrzende Neubauten / Crime &
The City Solution), Mick Harvey (co-founder of
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds), Danielle de Picciotto
( Crime & The City Solution) and Paul Wallfisch (musical
director at the Theater Dortmund) have collaborated - for
the first time - as The Ministry Of Wolves.

Their debut album, Music From Republik der Wölfe
has been created as a soundtrack to 'Republik der Wölfe'
a theatre production directed by Claudia Bauer, based on
the writings of the Brothers Grimm. These morality tales
and warnings are as dark as you remember them from
childhood. In the track, 'Rumpelstiltskin' the characters
are more human than they first seem, showing an aspect
of ourselves we might prefer to ignore: "He is a monster
of despair. He is all decay." The show, with live music
from The Ministry Of Wolves, premiered at Theater
Dortmund in Germany on February 15th 2014.

Following the album release, The Ministry Of Wolves
will be on tour in Europe in the Spring of 2014.

    Your Funeral...My Trial

Reduced to a quartet for the most part, with Barry Adamson joining Nick Cave, Blixa Bargeld, Mick Harvey and Thomas Wydler on only a couple of tracks, the Bad Seeds turn from the interpretive triumph of Kicking Against the Pricks to another strong high, the mostly-original Your Funeral...My Trial. The one cover is a sharp, unsurprisingly dramatic version of Tim Rose's Long Time Man. As for the rest of the album, Trial shows the Seeds working as, again, a remarkably accomplished and varied act, ever available and ready to explore a wide range of musics distilled into Cave's often dark, always passionate vision. Arguably Cave and company have by now so clearly established their overall style that Your Funeral...My Trial is much more a refinement of the past than anything else, but so good is their work that resistance is near impossible. If anything, the brooding power of the Seeds is more restrained than ever, suggesting destructive endings and overwhelming love without directly playing it. Songs like Jacks Shadow and the gentler but still melancholy moods of Sad Waters, detailing a riverside scene between a couple, are simply grand. The opening title track sets the mood well, Cave handling not merely vocals but Hammond organ, adding a strangely sweet air to the late-night atmosphere of the piece. The Carny is a definite highlight, the cracked music-box/carnival accompaniment courtesy of Harvey utterly appropriate for Cave's tale of a circus gone horribly wrong in ways Edward Gorey would appreciate. Hard On for Love, as the title pretty clearly gives away, is at once sensual and blunt right down to the lyrics, Biblical references and all, as the feverish music rises in a tide of emotion.

    Live 81-82

Few bands were as cataclysmic, chaotic, and iconoclastic as Australia's Birthday Party. And while they spawned a few imitators (most notably Bogshead, Scratch Acid, and the short-lived batcave movement), their fractured sound and aura of wickedness were so far removed from the norm of early-'80s rock music that no group even came close to duplicating their murderous persona and manic, driving racket.

Live 1981-82 collects 17 tracks from concerts in London, Germany, and Greece, and for a band whose music seemed to cling to sanity by the most delicate of threads, these recordings are surprisingly coherent and faithful to the album versions.

Taking into account the barrage of feedback, the pile-driving bass, and singer Nick Cave's howling, the sound is also quite good (the only exception being the single cut from Greece, a cover of the Stooges Funhouse).

As for the performances, the band is in excellent form. Cave delivers the songs with conviction and energy, punctuating them with his startling vocabulary of shiver-inducing screams, grunts, snorts, groans, and growls. Considering the schizophrenia that was so much a part of the band's music, Cave's ability to convincingly deliver his gut-wrenching angst is nothing short of remarkable.

While Cave's Manson-meets-Morrison persona drew most of the attention, it was the Birthday Party's ability to swing--hard--that put them over the top. Drummer Phil Calvert is a beacon in the sea of chaos as guitarists Mick Harvey and Roland S. Howard disembowel their guitars, blasting shards of jazz and blues across the horizon. The late bassist Tracy Pew is the real revelation. Rock solid and never missing a beat, Pew emerges as the constant amidst the wreckage, providing the rich base from which these bad seeds sprung.

Live 1981-81 is a near-perfect document of one of rock's most extreme, creative, and dangerous forces.

    From Her To Eternity

Nick Cave launched his solo career in style with From Her to Eternity, an accomplished album mixing the frenzy and power of his Birthday Party days with a dank, moody atmosphere that showed he was not interested in simply continuing what the older group had done. To be sure, Mick Harvey joined him from the Party days, as ever playing a variety of instruments, while one-time Party guest Blixa Bargeld now became a permanent Cave partner, splitting his time between the Bad Seeds and Einsturzende Neubaten ever since. The group took wing with a harrowing version of Leonard Cohen's Avalanche, Cave's wracked, buried tones suiting the Canadian legend's words perfectly, and never looked back. From Her to Eternity is crammed with any number of doom-laden songs, with Cave the understandable center of attention, his commanding vocals turning the blues and rural music into theatrical exhibitionism unmatched since Jim Morrison stalked stages. Songs like Cabin Fever, with its steadily paced drumming and relentless piano line, and the more restrained and moody The Moon Is in the Gutter sound like cabarets in hell. In the Ghetto, already perfectly suited to such a treatment, shows the underlying sense of beauty that defines the Seeds as much as drama. Even though it's a Presley cover, the sense of Scott Walker's influence isn't far away at all. The title track is and remains a Bad Seeds classic, played at shows up through the present, a tense piano/organ beginning then accompanied by the edgy build of the band, pounding drums, stabbing feedback and keyboard parts and more.

    The First Born Is Dead

The blues had long been a potent undercurrent in the Birthday Party's music, so it wasn't all that surprising that Nick Cave embraced the sound and feeling of rural blues on his second album with the Bad Seeds, The Firstborn Is Dead. What was startling was how well Cave and his bandmates -- Barry Adamson, Mick Harvey, and Blixa Bargeld -- were able to absorb and honor the influences of artists like Skip James and Charley Patton while creating a sound that was unmistakably their own. The moody obsessions of rural blues -- trains, floods, imprisonment, sin, fear, and death -- seemed made to order for Cave, and he was able to tap into the doomy iconography of this music with potent emotional force; on Tupelo, he makes a sweeping and disturbing epic of the rain-swept night when Elvis Presley was born, and Knocking on Joe is a tale of life on the work gang that communicates the pain of the spirit as clearly as the ache of the body. Also, the blues helped transform Cave's music as well as his lyrics; the brutal sonic pummel of the Birthday Party here gave way to a more subtle and dynamic approach that still made effective use of dissonance and bare-wired electric guitar noise while proving the balance of loud and soft only made each side deeper and more resonant. (The stark, barely there guitar and drums of Blind Lemon Jefferson are as startling and malignantly fascinating as anything in the Birthday Party's catalog.) The Firstborn Is Dead proved Nick Cave's musical palate was significantly broader than his debut album suggested and pointed to a path (channeling the sounds and emotions of American roots music) he would return to on many of his albums that followed.

    Pop Crimes

Rowland S. Howard started playing in teenage bands in late
70s Melbourne. Whilst still a callow youth he wrote "Shivers," an
undisputed classic, (quietly ignoring the fact that Rowland perhaps
doesn't see it that way and approaches the song as if it was written
by someone else). The song was recorded by his band The Boys Next
Door who mutated into the Birthday Party and then relocated to
Europe to wage a guerrilla campaign against the trivialities of the
80s, until they turned their fire upon themselves and disintegrated
    mid-decade.

Whilst his former associates have moved on to weekend colour
supplement acceptability, Rowland has commonly been perceived
as the banished wastrel prince... exiled to a squalid garret on the
colder edges of the kingdom, accompanied only by his dreams and
inclinations. His demeanour (pale, gaunt, stick thin, sickly, dark
humoured, fatalistic) has perhaps inadvertently added far too much
credence to this interpretation of events. The shadow of this myth
has seemingly obscured the sheer volume of his creativity and the
    singularity of his musical vision.

Always respected by his peers, a scan through Rowland's
catalogue of work sees him allied with the likes of Lydia Lunch,
Thurston Moore, Wim Wenders, Barry Adamson, The Gun Club, Nikki
Sudden, the Beasts Of Bourbon, the Hungry Ghosts and HTRK.
Rowland's own ensemble These Immortal Souls gun their engines
in the ill-lit background and the legacy of his work with The Birthday
Party scores the skin of successive generations of musicians and
    fans.

But it's a history Rowland would gleefully put a match to. With or
without it Rowland S. Howard would make tense, beautiful music,
would deliver us his personal vision of the world, would create Pop
    Crimes.

Long-time faithful friends Mick Harvey (who played with Rowland
for over 30 years), JP Shilo (Hungry Ghosts) and producer Lindsay
Gravina make for a formidable backline. Out front the guitar playing
couldn't be any one else but Rowland S Howard and his weary,
almost journalistic vocal delivery dispassionately sits amidst the
sweaty panic of the music, adding to the ill ease.

The band lurch in to Pop Crimes as if dragging a rain soaked body
across a muddy field. The ghosts of Lee Hazlewood, Snatch, Sergio
Leone, The Shangri-Las and nameless guys from a never known chain
gang watch on. Within the first few breaths Rowland references
Stalin, Calvary and genocide, whilst razoring guitar lines the current
crop of post-punk revisionists could only fantasize about.

"Shut Me Down" is Rowland at his most romantic, though
inevitably it's shot through with loss and longing. If only Dusty
Springfield were alive to revel in its drama. Talk Talk's 'Life's What
You Make It' is re-imagined as if it had risen from the grind of a
Detroit auto plant's assembly line. '(I Know) A Girl Called Johnny'
sees Jonnine D from HTRK sidle up to the microphone for a duet
that will melt even the coldest of hearts. It's a glorious missing link
between the New York girl group sound and the street smarts of
Suicide. Townes Van Zandt's "Nothin" is given a chilling tenement
building transformation. "Wayward Man" has the band wailing like
alarm sirens before Rowland emerges at his most contemplative
with the gorgeous, fragile build of "Ave Maria." Final track "The
Golden Age Of Bloodshed" takes the album out on a swaggering,
swashbuckling epic, with salvation slipping through the narrator's
    fingers.

    No More Shall We Part

No More Shall We Part ends a four-year silence from Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds. A best-of was issued in 2000, but no new material has appeared since 1997's landmark album, The Boatman's Call. With that record Cave had finally delivered what everyone knew he was capable of: an entire album of deeply tragic and beautiful love songs without irony, sarcasm, or violent resolution. It appears that The Boatman's Call has altered the manner in which Cave writes songs, and the Bad Seeds illustrate them. Two musical directors -- the ubiquitous Mick Harvey and Dirty Three violinist Warren Ellis -- craft a sonic atmosphere whose textures deepen and widen Cave's most profound and beautiful lyrics to date. The ballads have the wide, spacious, sobering ambience one has come to expect from the Bad Seeds. There is an ethereal change in sound in the up-tempo numbers, which are, for lack of better terminology, musical novellas. They plumb the depths of blues, yet contain glissando and crescendos from the orchestral music of composers such as Fartein Valen and Olivier Messiaen. There are places, such as in Oh My Lord, where rock & roll is evoked as a device, but this isn't rock music. A listen to As I Sat Sadly By Her Side, Hallelujah, and the aforementioned track (the most rock song here) will attest that it is merely one color on a musical palette that is more expansive now than at any time in the band's history. Also in the band's musical treasure trove is the addition of the McGarrigle sisters on backing vocals - nowhere is their contribution more poignant than on the tenderly daunting, haunted house that is Love Letter. Lyrically, and as a vocalist, Cave has undergone a startling, profound metamorphosis. Gone is the angry, humorous cynic whose venom and bile touched even his lighter moments. His deep taunting ambivalence about Jesus Christ and Christianity in general is gone, vanished into a maturity that ponders spiritual things contemplatively. Humor that pokes fun churchianity remains, but not as a source of its inspiration. Over these 12 tracks, Cave has taken the broken heart--so openly exhibited on The Boatman's Call--and elevated it to the place where he has learned to live with, and speak from it as both an artist and a human being. Leonard Cohen stated in the song Anthem, that, there is a crack in everything/that's where the light gets in.No More Shall We Part is a mosaic of those cracks. If this album is about anything, it is about love's ability to survive in the world. It is examined concretely and abstractly; to the point where it meditates on this theme even cinematically. His methodology for the listener is, even though these are intimate conversations, the effect is illustrated in widescreen. In this way, Cave touches the heart in the same way Andrei Tarkovsky's films Stalker and The Sacrifice and Wim Wenders' Wings of Desire do. There is powerful emotion here, spiritual, psychological and romantic, without a hint of the sentimentality that would make it false. As both a singer and a songwriter, his work has been transformed into something so full of depth, color, and dimension, that there is simply no one except his mentors working on this level in popular music. In the opening moments of As I Sat Sadly By Her Side, a tenderly, softly sung vocal delivers: Then she drew the curtains down/And said when will you ever learn/That what happens there beyond the glass/Is simply none of your concern/God has given you but one heart/You are not a home but the hearts of your brothers/God don't care for your benevolence anymore/But he cares for the lack of it in others/Nor does he care for you to sit at/Windows in judgement of the world he created/While sorrows pile up around you/Ugly, useless and over-inflated/At which she turned her head away/Great tears leapin' from her eyes/I could not wipe a smile from my face/As I sat sadly by her side. The title track is a ballad that could have been lifted from The Boatman's Call, except it lacks the reaching tragedy. And Cave sings in a tenor no one thought him capable of -- And all the birds will sing to your beautiful heart/Up on the bell/And no more shall we part. The chaos of earlier Bad Seeds outings does kick up on The Sorrowful Wife, where violins and Blixa Bargeld's guitars duel with Jim Sclavunos's drums for domination of the sonic torrent. The record closes with two of Cave's most beautiful songs, a near country gospel waltz called Gates to the Garden with the McGarrigles sweetening an already lovely tome to redemptive love. Finally, Darker With the Day, illustrated by Harvey's striking pianistic ballad framework touched by Bill Evans' technique, is as strikingly autobiographical as Cave has ever been, highlighting the extremes of good and evils that inform and torment the protagonist's inner emotional life within in a single day. There is loss and the seeking of deliverance and, in a statement not so much of recognition that this is simply fate, he also acknowledges hope: All these streets are frozen now/I come and go/Full of a longing for something I do not know. As he calls to a lover gone seemingly forever, he comes to the conclusion that for him, redemption is in love itself, whether divine or profane; the only hope is that love, between two people or between an individual and her or his creator, depends on one's openness to receiving it. Who can argue with him? No More Shall We Part leaves listeners in awe, full of complex emotions, and pondering the notion that they've been in the presence of great redemptive art--which Henry James calls, the thing that can never be repeated.
