    The Live Adventures of Mike Bloomfield and Al Kooper is a double album recorded at the Fillmore West venue in San Francisco. The album is the follow-up to the studio album Super Session which included both Bloomfield and Kooper in addition to Stephen Stills, and had achieved commercial and critical success earlier in 1968.


    In regards to the performances, recordings and production, in the sleeve notes Kooper describes the difficulties of finding rehearsal space, Bloomfield's insomnia, and the failure of a vocal microphone during Dear Mr Fantasy. The album is an important, if raw, document of a live blues-rock performance of the period and is notable for not only one of the earliest live recordings by Carlos Santana, but also Bloomfield's debut as a vocalist. Whilst he is not historically noted in this role, in Don't Throw Your Love on Me So Strong, according to Kooper, he displays consummate homage to the traditional guitar-voice trade-offs; a lesson in phrasing and understanding.

    Super Session

    Super Session (1968) was conceived by Al Kooper and features the work of guitarists Mike Bloomfield and Stephen Stills. Kooper and Bloomfield had previously worked together on the sessions for the ground-breaking classic Highway 61 Revisited by Bob Dylan. For Super Session, Kooper recruited keyboardist Barry Goldberg and bassist Harvey Brooks, both members of the Electric Flag, along with well-known session drummer "Fast" Eddie Hoh.


    On the second day of recording, with the tapes ready to roll, Bloomfield did not show up. Kooper hastily called upon Stephen Stills, also in the process of leaving his band Buffalo Springfield. Regrouping behind Stills, Kooper's session men cut mostly vocal tracks, including "It Takes A Lot to Laugh, It Takes A Train to Cry" from Highway 61 and a lengthy and atmospheric take of "Season of the Witch" by Donovan.


    The album peaked at #12 on the Billboard 200, and has been certified a Gold record. The success of this record opened the door for the "supergroup" concept of the late 1960s and 1970s - Blind Faith, Crosby, Stills & Nash, and the like.

    This double LP, recorded in December 1970 was recorded and broadcast from A&R Studios in New York City in front of a live audience. The lineup is mostly the same as the one that recorded the Elektra label live album the previous March at the Troubadour in Los Angeles with Paul Butterfield on vocals and harmonica, David Sanborn on alto sax, Gene Dinwiddie on soprano sax, Trevor Lawrence on baritone sax, Steve Madaio on trumpet, Ralph Wash on guitar, Rod Hicks on bass guitar, and Dennis Whitted on drums.


    While there is little doubt that the Butterfield Blues Band took a hit when Mike Bloomfield left, the group compensated by shifting musical direction, adding a horn section. Every new album represented a progression in the blues idiom, synthesizing and rearranging elements of blues, soul, rock, and jazz into something new and exciting.

    Along with fellow superstars Jefferson Airplane, Steve Miller Band and The Grateful Dead, The Paul Butterfield Blues Band was one of the first powerhouse rock acts of the sixties. With their phenomenal brand of Chicago blues music unlike any band before or after them, they helped to usher in the progressive underground rock movement.


    With its core line-up of Paul Butterfield (harmonica/lead vocalist), Mike Bloomfield (guitar), Elvin Bishop (guitar), Sam Lay(drums), Mark Nataflin (keyboards) and Jerome Arnold (bass), this amazing band truly delivered many legendary blues and rock recordings during their successful reign at Elektra Records.


    Blues masterpieces of the era still resonate today as Paul Butterfield and Co. foretold with their classic signature tunes like Born In Chicago, Look Over Yonders Wall, Mellow Down Easy and the mammoth blues prog-rocker East West. With the superstar talents that made up this band over the years, it was not uncommon to hear radio stations play entire sides of their revolutionary albums during the dawn of FM and underground radio.


    Later albums would reveal even further extensions of the blues rock genre with classic renditions like Marvin Gaye's One More Heartache, Michael Nesmith's Mary Mary, plus more of their own prolific standards like Last Hope's Gone, Morning Blues and of course their Woodstock 1969 anthem Love March.


    Elektra awarded The Paul Butterfield Blues Band and their huge fan base with a very extensive and amazing "Greatest Hits" package called Golden Butter back in 1972.     Super Session (Speakers Corner)

    The musicians are aiming high with their desire for a "Super Session", for it's not something that can be planned. Only when the time, place, and audience play along, when one's lucky star is shining brightly, and the musicians have a good day, then one of music's great moments might be captured on tape. Not forgetting the recording technicians who also have to be in the mood!



    In 1968 this all happened to be the case with the majority of the nine numbers on the Columbia LP: Season Of The Witch (written by Donovan) in its present version is one of them, as well as You Don't Love Me and the Dylan classic It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry. All in all, one must consider the numbers with Steve Stills as most successful in the sense of a session because here each musician inspires the others. In the super session with Kooper and Bloomfield, the guitarist stands in the limelight while the other musicians back him up.



    Very often the three soloists even surpass the greatest moments of their own groups (Al Kooper's Blood, Sweat & Tears; Mike Bloomfield's Electric Flag; Steven Stills's Buffalo Springfield). In 1968 the magazine Rolling Stone judged this album to be one of the best releases of the year: an accolade which is completely justified and is still valid to this day. What better reason to get your copy of this "highly recommended" album without delay.

    About Speakers Corner



    At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.



    During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.



    A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.



    We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.



    We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.



    To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Super Session

    This historic 1968 summit meeting features three of the era's greatest musical talents: blues guitar hero extraordinaire Mike Bloomfield, multi-talented keyboard visionary Al Kooper and Buffalo Springfield/CSNY founder and ace axeman Stephen Stills.


    After achieving prominence for his work as a member of the Blues Project and Blood, Sweat & Tears, and for his role in Bob Dylan's transition to electric rock, Kooper hit upon the idea of cutting a rock album using the same approach that was the standard methof for jazz recordings: Pick a leader or two co-leaders, hire appropriate sidemen, pick some tunes, make some up and record an entire album on the fly in one or two days.


    The project grew into Super Session, which combines a side of live-in-the-studio performances by Kooper and Bloomfield and a side featuring Kooper and Stephen Stills. Instrumental support was provided by bassist Harvey Brooks and keyboardist Barry Goldberg, both of the Electric Flag, and a veteran session drummer Eddie Hoh. Super Session proved to be both a commercial smash and a seminal influence, becoming the biggest-selling release of Bloomfield's career and inspiring countless other artists to attempt similar studio-jam recording projects.


    Out of print on vinyl for more than two decades, Super Session has been meticulously restored for the LP reissue, using Sundazed's usual exacting standards. The album is pressed on high-quality, high definition vinyl, and features the original cover art reproduced in its entirety.

    Mastered on Mobile Fidelity's world-renowned mastering system and pressed on 180 gram LP at RTI, this restored 45RPM analog version presents the life-altering music in reference-quality sound-so much so that the record's famous first lightning-strike note is now indeed the "snare shot that sound[s] like somebody'd kicked open the door to your mind," as once described by Bruce Springsteen.


    Teeming with organic energy, palpable voltage, and countless textures, the LP faithfully recreates the dimensions, vibes, and events associated with the six days Dylan and Co. spent at Columbia's Studio A.     The Butterfield Blues Band had reloaded by the time 1969's Keep on Moving was released on Elektra Records. Paul Butterfield startled the world with the addition of guitarist Buzzy Feiten, a man whose take-no-prisoners style turned out to be a muscular combination of the sound of his two predecessors, Mike Bloomfield and Elvin Bishop. Led by Butterfield wailing on lead vocals and his patented Southside of Chicago harmonica licks, the band sounded as powerful as ever with a new horn section that included David Sanborn on alto sax, Gene Dinwiddie on tenor and Keith Johnson on trumpet. It wouldn't last forever, but Paul Butterfield proved with Keep on Moving he had plenty of Hi-Octane gas left in the tank, and Keep on Moving fired on all cylinders.

    Mastered on Mobile Fidelity's world-renowned mastering system, pressed at RTI, and strictly limited to 3,000 copies, this restored analog mono version presents the life-altering music in reference-quality sound - so much so that the record's famous first lightning-strike note is now indeed the snare shot that sound[s] like somebody'd kicked open the door to your mind, as once described by Bruce Springsteen.


    Teeming with organic energy, palpable voltage, and countless textures, Mobile Fidelity's mono 2LP set faithfully recreates the instrumentation, moods, and events associated with the six days Dylan and Co. spent at Columbia's Studio A. While many people experienced Highway 61 Revisited in stereo even at the time of its release, hearing it in mono reveals even more definition, focus, and liveliness. In particular, Dylan's voice is surrounded by more space and atmosphere, and its forefront position makes the lyrics that much more powerful. This is the way everyone would've been introduced to Like a Rolling Stone on AM radio. There's no substitute for such authenticity.


    Recorded amidst a time of unfathomable turmoil and frustration that witnessed Dylan booed by fans, labeled a traitor, and call into question his work, Highway 61 Revisited roars and snarls, jabs and criticizes. Its bonfire of cynicism, fury, indignation, and absurdity forever transformed rock, what it could mean, and what it could do. Supported by a thundering, commanding band that included guitarist Mike Bloomfield and organist Al Kooper, Dylan hopscotches between tempos, moods, and melodies. The symmetry of the songs references a scattered hybrid of R&B, blues, folk, soul, gospel, vaudeville, and garage rock pieces that Dylan assembles in the shape of a brilliant, mind-teasing aural puzzle.


    Outside of "Like a Rolling Stone"-the six-minute-plus anthem that both challenged and chewed up all preconceived notions of an acceptable radio single by way of its length, ambition, and vitriol-every tune was captured shortly after Dylan's contentious performance at the Newport Folk Festival. The lingering impact of the hostility comes through in both the searing music and rich, literate, zinging poetry. Dylan's sneering tones, raucous arrangements, and unmistakable resentment toward both the establishment and counterculture that adopted him, and assume the form of songs such as "Ballad of a Thin Man," "Queen Jane Approximately," "Tombstone Blues," and the stupefying "Desolation Row."
