Hyphenated-ManHyphenated-man is the name of my third opera, Contemplating The Engine Room (1997) being the first one and The Secondman's Middle Stand (2004) being the second. Whereas Engine Room dealt with my pop's life in the navy as a metaphor for the story of the minutemen and Middle Stand was a parallel to Dante's comedia dealing with an illness that almost killed me in 2000, this third opera is quite different in that it has no standard narrative (libretto!) meaning no regular beginning-middle-end and is as it were simultaneous in the way a mirror from just inside my head, right in this middle-age moment of mine, was then shattered into thirty pieces and then each piece stuffed in the head to show a piece of my state of mind (or out-of-mind) as of now. Thirty tunes? Yes, they're little ones, actually they're thirty parts of one big tune.
It was kind of trippy how this piece was actually made. I wrote all thirty parts on one of D. Boon's telecasters, the black one he got in Kent, Ohio in 1984. Now I'm not a very good guitarist but Tom Watson was quite the righteous man in his patience and determination to take the palsy demos I gave him and bring them to the piece. - Mike Watt1. ADAD-MER-7416xShe & Him
Volume ThreeWith fourteen songs-11 Deschanel originals and three covers-
Volume 3 is an effortlessly effervescent, bleached-out-in-the-sun pop
record. The album features some of the most dynamic, complex
songs Deschanel has ever written, allowing for tempo shifts, disco
grooves, string arrangements on multiple tracks, and horn flourishes
that perfectly suit the She & Him sound. Produced by M. Ward and
recorded in Los Angeles, Portland, and New York City, Volume 3
features guest contributions from NRBQ's Joey Spampinato, Mike
Watt, Tilly and the Wall, Pierre de Reeder from Rilo Kiley, and Tom
Hagerman from Devotchka.
Since the release of the band's album Volume Two in 2010, much
has happened to both She and to Him. Deschanel, whose television
show New Girl has cemented her status as a sitcom star, continued
to hone her songwriting skills, writing the theme song for her new
show in addition to being nominated for a GRAMMY for Best
Original Song for the movie Winnie the Pooh. She wrote songs for
Volume 3 during small pockets of downtime while filming New Girl,
as Ward toured the world behind his latest solo creation, A
Wasteland Companion, which was released to massive critical acclaim
last year. Together and separately, the duo has sold over a million
albums domestically-a testament to their classic sonic
arrangements, their rich, incomparable voices, and their ability to

Ready To Die (Awaiting Repress)'Ready To Die' is the band's first studio collection since 2007's 'The Weirdness' and the first album of all-new material featuring Iggy Pop, guitarist James Williamson and drummer Scott Asheton since 1973's classic 'Raw Power'. Mike Watt fills in for the late Ron Asheton on bass.
Explaining his decision to make another Iggy And The Stooges album in 2013, Iggy Pop said recently: My motivation in making any record with the group at this point is no longer personal. It's just a pig-headed fucking thing I have that a real fucking group when they're an older group, they also make fucking records. They don't just go and twiddle around on stage to make a bunch of fucking money...
Tracks confirmed to appear include 'Burn', 'Job', 'Sex & Money' and the title track 'Ready To Die'. The album was produced by guitarist Williamson at Fantasy Studios in San Francisco, though Iggy Pop recorded his vocals in Miami.
The album was mixed by Ed Cherney, who revealed last month (January): It's old-time Stooges. It's raw. They're great songs, but not necessarily big choruses. They're the Antichrist of anthems.1. Burn

MovementRecorded live in concert on July 9, 2007, Gossip - Live In Liverpool brilliantly captures and brings into focus the stunning ferocity, energy and intensity at the heart of the band's groundbreaking meld of sound and politics. This incendiary concert showcase breaks out definitive performances of Gossip's signature tunes including the band's UK #1 Indie chart-topping smash, Standing In The Way Of Control; the UK Top 40 hit, Listen Up; and the #3 UK Indie track, Jealous Girls in addition to delightfully provocative covers of Wham!'s Careless Whisper and Aaliyah's Are You That Somebody?
Gossip - Live In Liverpool includes a DVD-V of the concert, lensed by documentary filmmaker and music video director Lance Bangs (Sonic Youth, Green Day, R.E.M., Death Cab For Cutie, Kanye West, Pavement, Mike Watt and more). Also includes a limited edition 18 x 24 poster.
Gossip released its first full-length collection of songs, That's Not What I Heard, in January of 2001 and its successor, Arkansas Heat, in 2002 after touring with the White Stripes and Sleater-Kinney. Gossip reached a threshold of transcendence with its last studio collection, 2006's Standing In The Way Of Control, which shot to #1 on the UK indie albums chart. The album's title track became a UK hit in its own right after becoming the unofficial theme music for the popular British television teen drama, Skins. Standing In The Way Of Control charted on Billboard's European Top 100 Albums and European Hot 100 Singles charts. The single has sold more than 150,000 copies in the UK.1 Nite

Buzz Or Howl Under The Influence Of HeatWhat Makes a Man Start Fires? marked a real step forward for the Minutemen, and while Double Nickels on the Dime was where the group would reach their peak, there were plenty of signs pointing to that album's diverse brilliance on this eight-song EP. While 'Dreams Are Free, Motherfucker!' and 'The Toe Jam' are goofy, noisy throwaways (hey, this was a EP sandwiched between albums), the rest of the songs found the band consolidating their strengths and growing even tighter and more confident. 'I Felt Like a Gringo' and 'Cut' merge funky rhythms with a punk rocker's sense of concision, 'Self Referenced' and 'The Product' reveal how far this band's writing had progressed since The Punch Line, and 'Little Man With a Gun in His Hand' showed the Minutemen could reduce the tempo and the volume and still create stunning music. It's hard to think of a stronger rhythm section in an independent band in the 1980s than Mike Watt and George Hurley, and D. Boon was by any standards a superb guitarist, with smarts, style, and a keen sense of how to edit himself. Petra Goes To The MoviesPetra Haden's wondrous new album Petra Goes to the Movies offers a one of a kind opportunity to experience film scores in an extraordinary new way. Epic and evocative scores have been ingeniously recreated utilizing layers of remarkably inventive vocals. Far from a mere novelty, these interpretations retain all the emotional resonance of the originals. Out this January 22 via Anti-, Petra Goes to the Movies features Haden, a highly regarded session musician (Foo Fighters, Beck, the Decemberists) and former member of That Dog, delivering a cappella versions of scores from films such as Psycho, Rebel Without A Cause, Taxi Driver, Superman and more. Haden, who hails from a musical family that includes her father, distinguished jazz bassist Charlie Haden, has a history of working a capella; in 2005, at the suggestion of bassist Mike Watt, she recorded and released an a-cappella rendition of the Who's pop masterwork The Who Sell Out to widespread acclaim. Upon hearing the record, Pete Townshend telephoned Haden to enthusiastically thank her, proclaiming her version of his album "beautiful."
Petra Goes to the Movies is the culmination of Haden's lifelong love for both vocal interpretation and movie music: "The idea of interpreting music with my voice started when I was little," she explains. "I would hear music around the house and mimic the instruments with my voice. And I love movies but my favorite thing about them has always been the soundtracks. When people hear this record I want them to feel what I felt when I first saw the film, even if they've never seen it."
In addition to Haden's multi layered vocals, the record features notable guest appearances by jazz pianist Brad Mehldau, bassist Charlie Haden and Bill Frisell.1. Rebel Without A Cause Main Title - Rebel Without A

Cortar TodoFor over fifteen years, Zu's modus operandi of straddling and abusing musical genres has resulted in over fifteen unique album releases across labels such as Ipecac, Atavistic and Headz (Japan). Their experimental amalgam of metal, math, no-wave, noise and electronics, led acclaimed composer John Zorn to describe their sound as a powerful and expressive music that totally blows away what most bands do these days.
In the running for the title of the world's hardest working band, Zu have performed over 1000 shows throughout Europe, US, Canada, Asia, Russia, Mexico and even Africa, touring with the like of Mike Patton (as the Zu/Patton quartet), also sharing the stage with Faith No More, Fantômas, The Melvins, Lightning Bolt, Sonic Youth, The Ex, and countless others. They have also collaborated with a vast number of musicians including Mike Patton, The Melvins, DÄlek, Jim O' Rourke, FM Einheit (Einsturzende Neubauten), Peter Brötzmann, Nobukazu Takemura, Eugene Robinson (Oxbow), Steve MacKay (The Stooges), The Ex, Thurston Moore, Stephen O Malley, Damo Suzuki (Can), Mats Gustafsson, NoMeansNo, Joe Lally (Fugazi).
Five years since their last full length on Ipecac, the critically acclaimed Carboniferous, and following a three year hiatus, Zu returned in May 2014 with the release of a brand new EP, Goodnight Civilization (Trost Records) and with a line up change that introduced the mighty Gabe Serbian, best known as the drummer for the legendary Californian band, The Locust.
In March 2015, Zu are preparing to release a brand new full length via Ipecac Recordings, entitled Cortar Todo, and recorded in the countryside near Bologna, Italy, in the summer of 2014. The album features some very special guests including keyboard player Joey Karam (The Locust), Italian guitar maverick Stefano Pilia (who plays regularly with the likes of Mike Watt, David Grubbs and Rokia Traore) and perhaps most unexpectedly, a field recording of an indigenous Shipibo medicine man recorded by Massimo during his travels around the Amazon.
Cortar Todo reveals new dynamics from the band, the album is more direct, sharp, focussed, and more intense and musical than anything we have heard from Zu so far. In addition to the album release, we can expect a long period of touring starting in Spring 2015.1. The Unseen War

Psychic Temple IIIt may seem hard to imagine a place where indie rock visionaries like Sufjan Stevens and Castanets' Ray Raposa could meld minds with the genius of Brian Wilson, where death metal pioneer Paul Masvidal might wield his legendary six-string chops on a blissed-out soul ballad, where adventurous young jazz players like Kris Tiner and Devin Hoff share credit with Mars Volta keyboardist Ikey Owens and singer/songwriter Aaron Roche.
Long Beach composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist (not to mention truck driver) Chris Schlarb has not only imagined such a place but has now made it manifest for a second time. Released by Asthmatic Kitty, Psychic Temple II is a labor of love, envisioned by Schlarb to bring his most far-ranging inspirations to life - as he puts it, "a dream ensemble that could never actually exist." The ensemble's sophomore release was painstakingly constructed over more than a year with the cooperation of some of the most progressive musical minds from a staggering variety of genres.
"I love interesting juxtapositions, where you bring together people from different communities," Schlarb says. He cites iconoclastic predecessors like Bill Laswell's ever-changing group Material, which once brought together a young Whitney Houston with jazz legend Archie Shepp and future Soundgarden and Red Hot Chili Peppers producer Michael Beinhorn to cover a song by Hugh Hopper of English prog-rock pioneers Soft Machine. On 2010's Psychic Temple, Schlarb assembled a 29-member ensemble that included Minutemen bassist Mike Watt, vocalist Julianna Barwick, and pianist Mick Rossi of the Philip Glass Ensemble.
"It seems like a crazy combination of people," Schlarb says, "but they're all just musicians. Why not bring them all together? It may not always work, but it's always worth reaching further."
Psychic Temple II reaches beyond the long-form experiments of its predecessor for a more tightly focused yet conceptually dense collection whose songs are no less exploratory for their briefer durations. "I never see the point in continuing to regurgitate," Schlarb says of the new album's unique direction. "What was natural at that time would now feel contrived. I have to keep moving forward."
Schlarb also includes three cover songs by composers who share his boundary-demolishing mindset: Joe Jackson's "Steppin' Out," Frank Zappa's "Sofa No. 2," and Brian Wilson's "'Til I Die," a gorgeous, lesser-known Beach Boys song that features vocals by Sufjan Stevens, Castanets' Ray Raposa, and Cryptacize's Nedelle Torrisi.
Psychic Temple had its origins in Create (!), a large improvising ensemble with which Schlarb used to perform. The free-form group would often incorporate multiple drummers, a concept that Schlarb decided to pursue in a more composition-oriented setting. No matter how much Psychic Temple mutates from track to track, the rhythmic possibilities of its two drummers (in this case, Tabor Allen and Andrew Pompey) remain intact.
Schlarb's imaginative leaps are evidenced from the outset of Psychic Temple II, on the intoxicating opening track, "Seventh House." Featuring the sinuous vocals of Sarah Negahdari, who recently served as touring bassist for Silversun Pickups, the song weaves together lyrical and musical references to Neil Young's "Will To Love," to the Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers album Pisces, and to Sheena Easton's notorious Prince-penned pop hit "Sugar Walls."
Then there's "The Starry King Hears Laughter" and "She Is the Golden World," two songs that pay simultaneous homage to poet William Blake and jazz legend Bill Evans; or "Solo in Place," Schlarb's attempt to filter classic soul through his own "weird prism," a missing link between the Isley Brothers and the Alan Parsons Project that features guitar wizard Paul Masvidal of the death metal bands Death and Cynic.
Despite such a mind-blowing array of talent from the farthest reaches of the musical spectrum, Psychic Temple II is a surprisingly cohesive album, a testament to Schlarb's clear controlling vision. "One of the fundamental flaws of modern music is the idea of the record as a pastiche," he says. "With hip-hop and R&R records starting in the '90s, you had ten tracks with ten different producers so every track sounded completely different. There was no aesthetic where you could just put on a record and listen to it beginning to end. I admire people who are control freaks."
Schlarb has wielded control over a number of vastly different projects himself. The New York Observer called his debut solo album, Twilight & Ghost Stories, "40 minutes of avant-garde bliss," while Interoceans, recorded with experimental jazz duo I Heart Lung, was chosen by NPR as one of the top five jazz albums of 2008. He composed the score for Nicklas "Nifflas" Nygren's video game Nightsky and has received grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and Meet the Composer. In 2001, Schlarb founded the eclectic Sounds Are Active record label, which has released music by the likes of Nels Cline, Mike Watt, and Castanets.1. Seventh House

Live at the Paradiso
Limited To 600 Copies On Soft Purple Vinyl
Soft Machine was one of the first prog-rock bands, but if your vision of prog-rock consists of musicians wreathed in pot smoke airily singing of fairies and wizards, it will be summarily dispelled by this fantastic "authorized bootleg," which captures the band in March 1969 at the Paradiso in Amsterdam, playing material that was to be released six months later on Soft Machine: Volume Two.
The trio of Robert Wyatt on drums and vocals, Mike Ratledge on organ and Hugh Hopper on bass launch what can only be called a high-decibel, jazz-rock sonic assault; "Like vindaloo for the ears" is how Hopper puts it on the accompanying notes on the inner sleeve, adding, "I do remember playing incredibly loud, Mike on fuzz organ and me on fuzz bass, both through hundred-watt Marshall stacks." Some of the frenzied instrumental passages might recall Miles Davis' Agharta-era band, but remember, this is a trio making all this racket (in 1969, no less); Soft Machine at this point in time were on a journey all their own. This is the first-ever vinyl release of this notorious concert, and it comes on "soft" purple vinyl limited to 600 copies. Vessel Of LoveHollie Cook combines her unique vocal talent with charming charisma to craft her own dynamic strand of lovers rock with enduring tropical vibes, weaving a path from her West London roots to an arena of diverse collaborations, critically acclaimed records, and iconic live appearances around the world. Cook's ability to continually surprise, delight, and progress solidifies her position as one of the most exciting voices in reggae, and this is crystal clear on her third full-length and Merge debut, Vessel of Love.
Cook's music career commenced early when family friend and punk trailblazer Ari Up asked Cook, age 19 at the time, to join the raucous '70s feminist UK post-punk outfit The Slits for their reformation in 2006. She thrived on being thrown into the deep end and quickly cut her teeth with four years of back-to-back shows around the globe. Her talents recognized and nurtured, she then released her first solo album Hollie Cook in 2011, with a revered 2012 dub album follow-up, while singles such as "Milk & Honey" and "That Very Night" gained support from influential radio stations across Europe. After performing at The Stone Roses concert at Manchester's Heaton Park at the personal request of Ian Brown, and her hypnotic performance on the prestigious Later With Jools Holland, the way was paved for Hollie's solo career to take off.
For someone who claimed "it's hard for a band to really stand out and shake up the world," Cook was certainly making a good go of proving herself wrong. By the end of 2014, Jamie T had requested her support for his Alexandra Palace show and featured her on his track "They Told Me It Rained." Cook had also unleashed Twice via Mr. Bongo Records, and with Mike "Prince Fatty" Pelanconi once again aiding in the album's conception, Cook confidently delivered with her follow-up to a well-received debut. In the wake of another successful release, Hollie hit the road with both The Skints and Protoje, and lent her vocal talent to Quantic's "Shuffle Them Shoes" single, which also featured on his 1000 Watts album.
Acclaimed legendary producer Martin "Youth" Glover is Cook's most recent collaborator, lending his venerable production expertise to Vessel of Love. His success with Killing Joke is only surpassed by his enduring reputation as one of the most prolific producers in the UK. "I'm very honored to work with Hollie, one of the most exciting emerging singers and writers over the last ten years," says Glover. Hollie Cook sits in good company on his impressive production list, joining the likes of Paul McCartney, Tom Jones, The Verve, Primal Scream, Pink Floyd, and Depeche Mode. Glover describes Cook's songs as "sharp lyrical observations and clever word play combined with an exquisite and informed pop sensibility," and they are only elevated by Glover's production on Vessel of Love, in particular the singles "Survive" and "Freefalling" as well as deeper cuts like "Ghostly Fading" and "Together."1.
