    You Are Not Alone

Soul Gospel Legend at the Top of Her Game: Staples Declared Best Artist at 2010's Lollapalooza Festival

Hallelujah: You Are Not Alone Might Be the Best New Album You Hear in 2010

Stellar Set Produced by Wilco's Jeff Tweedy and Features Songs by Allen Toussaint, John Fogerty, Tweedy, Randy Newman, and More

The best album you hear in 2010? You Are Not Alone will be at the top of the list. This is music that's timeless, soulful, and pertinent, performed with an energy and commitment that burns with the same level of conviction as Mavis Staples' belief in a higher power. Here's a record that will change your life and elevate your mood. Just as its two main architects intended.

When Wilco leader Jeff Tweedy and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Mavis Staples sat down to talk about what they wanted her new album to sound like, they both turned to the original spiritual roots of the Staples Singers as a backbone. Both wanted to make a record about connection, about reaching out to someone through the power of music. What they achieved is the album of Staples' career, a warm, powerful, spiritual, and fervent collection of brilliantly chosen and interpreted songs.

Produced by fellow Chicagoan Jeff Tweedy at Wilcos studio The Loft, the intimate and textured production--glorious on LP--mixes traditional gospel numbers with two new songs written for Mavis by Tweedy, plus her unique interpretations of songs by Pops Staples, Randy Newman, Allen Toussaint, John Fogerty, Rev. Gary Davis and Little Milton. Backed by Mavis smoking touring band (Rick Holmstrom, guitar, vocals; Jeff Turmes, bass, vocals; Stephen Hodges, drums; Donny Gerrard, background vocals) and featuring guest turns from Tweedy and Wilcos Patrick Sansone, with background vocals by Kelly Hogan and Nora OConnor, the album cradles Mavis exquisite voice, allowing her to stretch out emotionally on tracks like Randy Newmans Losing You and the Creedence Clearwater Revival chesnut Wrote a Song For Everyone.

The two songs Jeff wrote for Mavis meld seamlessly into the vibe and theme of the album: He would listen to my conversations, my words, and then feed off that. The songs he wrote take me places I wouldnt normally go, says Mavis.

Already one of the bestâ€received releases of 2010, Mavis message of joy and redemption has found the setting it has always deserved. Truly, a must-own album that will last you a lifetime.

Nascimento's 1972 double LP is named after the musical collective he helped to found in his Brazilian home state of Minas Gerais. Along with the help of fellow collective member Lo Borges, and with wonderful arrangements from Eumir Deodato, Nascimento seamlessly combines bossa nova with soul, pop, jazz, psychedelic and classical influences. A masterpiece on par with any of the classic releases from the more well know Tropicalia movement. Reissued on 180 gram vinyl in a deluxe gatefold jacket.

    The Argument

As founder and half of the songwriting engine that drove the mighty HÜsker DÜ to his maverick solo work (has there ever been a portrait of a breakup as evocative yet anthemic as "2541"?), Grant Hart has cut a singular path across the last three decades of music. It is with great confidence that we say he has made an album to rival his greatest achievements. A double album based on John Milton's epic Paradise Lost, Hart distills its essence into pop and rock concoctions that nimbly flit through the history of 20th century music from Irving Berlin and David Bowie to... HÜsker DÜ, even. Ambition is the topic and Hell is the location for this project that is ambitious as Hell. Does he pull it off? We say yes!

Although lines from the poem are rarely quoted directly, all of the menace, pain and devotion of Milton's best loved work are here found. But where
Milton's poem was unadorned by rhyme, The Argument contain many complex couplets, especially the title track, in which not only the ends of lines rhyme, but the word that ends a phrase is the same as the first line of the phrase after it, all while conforming to the original ten syllable structure devised by Milton. Anyone who has ever had a conversation with Grant knows how patiently he chooses the words he uses.

While visiting James Grauerholz, former friend and secretary for William S. Burroughs, James showed Grant an unpublished manuscript for Lost Paradise,
William's science fiction story which portrays the fallen angels as men from distant planets and God as none other than fellow Missourian Harry S. Truman.
James and Grant discussed adding music to William's story much in the same way that Tom Waits and William conspired to turn the German folk tale Die
Freishutz into The Black Rider as staged by Robert Wilson.

From that point the seed had been planted, and the seed grew into the most beautiful tree in the garden of Grant's career!

Randy Newman's Faust is a 1993 musical based the work on the classic story of Faust. Newman borrowed elements from the version by Goethe, as well as Milton's Paradise Lost, but updated the story to the modern day and infused it with humorous cynicism. In this retelling, God and the Devil ght for the soul of Henry Faust, a student at the University of Notre Dame. Vocal duties are co handled by James Taylor, Elton John, Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt and Don Henley.

    Rattle That Lock

Rattle That Lock is the new solo album by David Gilmour, the voice and guitar of Pink Floyd. This is David's fourth solo album, and the first since 2006's # 1 album On An Island. The primary lyricist for Rattle That Lock is Gilmour's long-term writing partner, Polly Samson, and the album is co-produced by David Gilmour and Roxy Music s Phil Manzanera. The album's striking cover has been art directed by Dave Stansbie.

The lead single of this album is the title track, Rattle That Lock. The song begins with the four notes, created by Michael Boumendil, which precede announcements at French SNCF railway stations which Gilmour recorded on his iphone at Aix station. Samson's lyrics are inspired by Book 2 of John Milton's Paradise Lost, which is also featured in her recent acclaimed novel, The Kindness. The single also features the Liberty Choir and singers Mica Paris and Louise Marshall.

    Flyin' Shoes

Widely considered one of the greatest songwriters of his generation, Townes Van Zandt has been hailed by such artists as Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, Lyle Lovett and Willie Nelson among others. Fat Possum proudly reissues four titles from his early career: Townes Van Zandt, Our Mother the Mountain, Delta Momma Blues and Flyin' Shoes which comprise an essential introduction to his best songs. Recorded between 1969 and 1978, Van Zandt's most prolific and most critically acclaimed decade, these four titles are the heart of any serious consideration of Van Zandt's musical career. Featuring some of the most iconic cover art in album history designed by Milton Glaser, each is a classic in every sense of the word. These four titles are the first in a series of Townes Van Zandt reissues that Fat Posssum is undertaking in conjuction with the Van Zandt estate.

The final Townes Van Zandt studio record before a nine-year-long mid-'70s recording drought, Flyin' Shoes has the advantage of Van Zandt's usual stellar songs, a famed producer (Chips Moman) and a boatload of first-class sidemen, including Jimmy Day, Randy Scrugg, and Spooner Oldham. The production is reasonably spare, allowing the quality of the songwriting and Van Zandt's creaky voice to shine through. Stand out tracks include Snake Song, No Place to Fall, When She Don't Need Me and a rare cover of Bo Diddley's Who Do You Love.

    First Impressions (Pure Pleasure)

For a label that wasn't around long, Strata East achieved the same sort of label recognition that Impulse! or Blue Note managed to build. In other words, you knew what you were getting when you bought a record on the label, even if you didn't know the names on the outside of the cover. This is no exception. Who is Shamek Farrah? Who knows? Who cares? It's the music that's important. This is the standard spiritually intense new jazz one learns to expect from the label, soaked in some Eastern influences but always with its ear to the street. Musicians took their roles as leaders and spokesmen very seriously back then. This very adult statement from a group of very serious men is no exception. However, what might be an average, forgettable session is rescued by the propulsive engine of Milton Suggs' bass. He adds the fire and the drive that keeps things interesting and prevents the music from wandering into a circular spiritual morass. For fans of the sound or the label, this can be heartily recommended.

    Musicians:

    • Shamek Farrah (alto saxophone)

    • Norman Person (trumpet)

    • Sonelius Smith (piano)

    • Milton Suggs (bass)

    • Ron Warwell (drums)

    • Kenny Harper (percussion)

    • Calvert 'Bo' Satter-White (conga)

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

First Time Audiophile Vinyl Release Of This 3X Platinum Metal Classic!

Mastered By Joe Reagoso At Friday Music And Capitol Mastering, Hollywood From The Original Atlantic Records Tapes

Ratt have been making very loud and credible heavy metal rock albums now for over three decades. The San Diego quintet built a local club following throughout the early eighties and flourished into a mega-platinum recording act for Atlantic Records with their debut smash recording Out of the Cellar.
The Out of the Cellar album features 10 hard hitting rock masterworks like their top charting hit singles Round and Round, Back for More and Wanted Man as well as a plethora of metal radio classics like The Morning After, She Wants Money, In Your Direction and the ever popular metal album closer Scene of the Crime.

Out of the Cellar was also a home run for their huge video audience, as Round and Round was an MTV smash
video hit and featured the antics of Stephen Pearcy's famous uncle the late great Milton Berle.
Featuring the dynamic vocals of Stephen Pearcy, the dual guitar attack of Warren DeMartini and Robbin Crosby, the blistering bass of Juan Croucier and the powerful drum work of Bobby Blotzer, Ratt's Out of the Cellar album is still the go to choice for many heavy metal fans as the band continues to be a major force in the music industry.

When Out of the Cellar was released in 1984, the compact disc and cassette were the dominant media of the day, as the original rare vinyl album release went on to become a highly priced collector's item chasing major bucks for a mint copy.

Relayer Friday Music is very pleased to announce another heavy metal classic with the debut top five, multimillion selling album Out of the Cellar by Ratt. Mastered from the original Atlantic Records tapes by Joe "Heavy Metal Kid" Reagoso (Deep Purple/Alice Cooper/UFO), this first time audiophile vinyl release will be one of the most anticipated
heavy metal audiophile releases this year.

    Sub Rosa (Discontinued)

Produced by Harris and drummer Bill Dobrow, the new album will feature 14 gorgeous tracks recorded and mixed between November 2011 and March 2012 during a series of extended trips down to Rio De Janeiro where Harris encamped at Monoaural, a recording space built into an old house in the city's Baixo-Gavea section.

Sub Rosa pulls in the talents of long-time friends and cohorts, Norah Jones, Melody Gardot, Conor Oberst, and noteworthy Brazilian artists such as 27-year old keyboardist/arranger Maycon Ananias (Maria Gadu, Milton Nascimento) and Dadi, co-producer and bassist for Marisa Monte, who also plays with Jorge Ben (and who has the esteemed honor of having a Caetano Veloso song written about him). Also in the mix are singer Maria Gadu, jazz guitar legend Bill Frisell, singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Vinicius Cantuaria (who let Jesse and Bill crash at his house the entire time), guitarist Guilherme Monteiro (Forro In The Dark, Bebel Gilberto) and guitarist Nick Zinner, as well as ensembles of strings and horns with players ranging from members of Bon Iver to Brooklyn Rider. The album is a masterpiece of modern record making, striking the perfect balance between the spontaneity of live sessions and high fidelity and the craft of great songs and arrangements.

Probably best known for his 2003 Song Of The Year Grammy win for Jones' "Don't Know Why," Harris has been arguably one of the most prolific singer/songwriter/musicians in the country for nearly two decades now. Sub Rosa marks the eleventh in a fairly rapid succession of albums, most recently 2005's Mineral, 2007's Feel, 2009's Watching The Sky, and 2010's double-release of Through The Night and an instrumental album, Cosmo.
Prior to the lone wolf efforts, Harris released a pocketful of records with his noteworthy group, the Ferdinandos and yet another album prior to those with Once Blue, a duo with Rebecca Martin, in 1995. Nearly countless sessions later with friends and music-makers, piles of successful co-writes, covers of his songs, and shared stages with the likes of Jones, American Music Club, Bright Eyes, Joshua Radin and Ani DiFranco, Sub Rosa is clearly Harris' brass ring.

"I Know It Won't Be Long," is the kick off with a foot stomp two/four and a horn section holding down the choruses with Maria Gadu's lilting harmonies flying throughout. "Rocking Chairs," co-written with Dadi, is a whisper of powerful words, a perfume breeze that goes right to your memory and won't let you go, featuring Jones' backing vocal. "I Won't Wait" gives us an almost tarantella rendering this time with Oberst on backing vox, Zinner on tremolo guitar and an incredible string arrangement by Ananias. That's Frisell on guitar and Cantuaria playing maracas on "It's Been Going Around" and Gardot providing backing vocals for "Tant Pis." The list goes on-another pocketful of perfect songs the heartbeat of which can be felt just as powerfully on Coney Island as it can on Copacabana Beach.

Toni Harper's two original albums Toni (1956) and Lady Lonely (1959).

Toni Harper's childhood was made of the magic any aspiring adult artist would kill for: a platinum record, a performance at Carnegie Hall, evenings spent sharing a stage with such performers as Cab Calloway, and invitations to appear on television with Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, Milton Berle, and Ed Sullivan. And all of the magic unfolded before she'd turned 12 years old.

The jazz vocalist, who now goes by the name Toni Dunlap, got her big break in 1945 when she went up against a couple hundred other kids at an audition held by choreographer Nick Castle. Harper, who had been a dance student of Maceo Anderson, passed muster as far as her dancing, but when she sang Waitin' for the Train to Come In, she had the audition sewn up on the spot. Castle cast her in his production of Christmas Follies, which was staged at Los Angeles' Wilshire Ebell Theatre. Harper drew enthusiastic reviews and went on to earn a platinum record when she was eight years old with Candy Store Blues.

Harper paired with Herb Jeffries for You're Too Tall 'n' I'm Too Small, the number for which she later paired live with Calloway at Los Angeles' Million Dollar Theatre. Television beckoned the young singer and she was a guest on numerous programs, among them Sullivan's weekly variety show. When she wasn't appearing on television, she was singing at numerous New York hot spots that included the Apollo, the Strand, and the Paramount. At the age of 11, Harper topped it all off by singing at Carnegie Hall.

Like many child stars, Harper's career slowed down as she began to mature. As a teenager, she was too old for the childhood image that had given her a great start, but too young to effectively take on a more adult image. She attended high school in Los Angeles, involving herself in such extracurricular activities as drama, choir, and the glee club. She continued to take professional singing jobs during the school's summer break. Having completed high school in the mid-'50s, and still hampered by her youth, she sang for the teenaged record-buying public. For a young woman of her age, One Hamburger to Go was more acceptable in the public eye than any of the more sophisticated songs that she would record in later years, such as Love for Sale.

The vocalist got her chance to sing the more adult songs when she recorded for Verve. In addition to Love for Sale, Harper recorded such songs as I Could Write a Book and Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered. Backing Harper on her self-titled first recording for Verve were pianist Oscar Peterson, drummer Alvin Stoller, guitarist Herb Ellis, and bassist Ray Brown. The vocalist later signed with RCA Victor, recording for the label for about four years and ending in 1963. Harper quit the business in 1966 after devoting more than 20 years to her singing career.

The Evening Visits...And Stays For Years

Born of the small but vibrant Brisbane punk/new wave scene of the late Seventies, Peter
Milton Walsh began to cultivate the mysterious, moody myth that would follow him through
out his career that has taken him around the world. But before setting out abraod, Walsh
certainly made his mark on the Brisbaine scene. His band, The Apartments, formed in 1978
and spent the next year playing ample amounts of shows around Brisbaine. With a reputation
that preceeded him, Walsh was saught out by Robert Forster and Grant McLennan,
members of one of Brisbaine's most noteworthy bands, The Go-Betweens. Having been
offered an 8 album deal by Beserkly Records, Forster and McLennon asked Walsh to join
The Go-Betweens as their fourth member in late 1978. The union was, however, short lived.
There were personality differences, which led McLennon to famously say "Walsh is night, we
are day. We're sun, he's rain.".

After the deal with Beserkly fell through, Walsh returned to The Apartments, leaving The
Go-Betweens as a three piece. They went on to affectionately write a song for Walsh,
entitled "Don't Let Him Come Back", which included the line "Here he comes, with his twelve
o'clock junk...who's that dressed in black? Who's that in his apartment?". Things weren't sour
between the two bands and The Apartments recorded their first EP, "Return of the Hypnotist"
on The Go-Between's Able Label. But before the EP was even released, The Apartments
broke up and Walsh left for New York City. During his time in NYC, Walsh played
mustic with a number of bands and recorded many songs that would serve as demos for
future releases for the still defunct Apartments.

Returning to Australia in 1984, Walsh got the band back together and recorded a few
singles, including "All You Wanted". All the while the band were also recording demos, which
led to a record deal with London's legendary Rough Trade Records, prompting Walsh to
move to London. It was there that he recorded his first proper LP, "The Evening Visits... And
Stays for Years". The album received strong praise and drew comparisons to a wide range of
acts such as Cocteau Twins, Nick Drake and Bob Dylan. The NME said of the record ""after
whetting our appetites with last year's classic import single 'All You Wanted' The Apartments
have stunned us to a reverential silence. This album is a pure heart-wrencher, and should
only be listened to after dark.".

Although The Apartments and Walsh continued to tour and record with a variety of line ups,
it is these early works that provide a definitive look at their sound. Available all together
for the first time, Captured Tracks are pleased to present "The Evening Visits... And Stays for
Years" along with "The Return of the Hypnotist", the "All You Wanted" single and a collection
of demos from "The Evening Visits...". Complete with liner notes by Robert Forster and Walsh
himself, this increadible collection of Walsh's first seven years of recordings is not to be missed.

    ...And The Ever Expanding Universe

Out of the serenity of Milton, Ontario returns their most ambitious export, the young sextet known as The Most Serene Republic. Their third full-length, ...And The Ever Expanding Universe is produced by Dave Newfeld (Broken Social Scene, Super Furry Animals, Los Campesinos!) and it shows the band confidently striding forward with a more mature, diverse and exhilarating sound.

With two acclaimed albums and an EP already under their belts, these just now 24-year old musicians have already been performing together for a half-dozen years. Very much a product of their wide ranging personalities, the band is led by Ryan Lenssens classical piano and obsession with musical history, and singer/lyricist Adrian Jewetts Joycian stream-of-conscious lyrics and larger then life stage personality. The entire bands excellence with their instruments is undeniable and is proven both live and on album.
