    Trumpeter Johnny Coles, a distinctive and passionate player best known for his associations with Gil Evans, the remarkable Charles Mingus Quintet of 1964, and Herbie Hancock's late 60's Sextet, led relatively few albums of his own, and only two before 1982. Recorded in 1963, Little Johnny C is universally recognized as Johnny Coles' finest recording. Coles' soulful trumpet is heard in superb form as he pushes the hard bop mainstream forward. Duke Pearson, who was both a very skilled pianist, as well as one of the top arrangers of the 1960s, contributes five very fresh originals to the set. Notably, Little Johnny C is also one of tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson's finest early recordings, and his round sound and innovative phrasing clearly evident at this early point in his career. With the superb title cut, the ballad So Sweet My Little Girl, and Jano being high-points, in addition to beautiful flute and alto solos contributed by Leo Wright, Little Johnny C is a masterful album by an artist at his creative peak.     The Clown (Speakers Corner)

    Who hasn't got an ancient, worn-out copy of The Clown on his shelf, with a tatty cover and torn inner sleeve? Or maybe one of the rare re-releases made of cheap, thin vinyl with dreadful graphic art? And if you haven't heard this gem for a long time, despite the flood of Mingus LPs, CDs and downloads on the market, then you really should seize this opportunity to do so. The Clown was, and still is, an absolute must-have for every jazz collector. The small ensemble, only five musicians, came into the New York Atlantic Records studio in March 1957 to record music exclusively composed by the double bassist. Over the next 15 years, three of them were to be heard in numerous concerts with other ensembles. But the original recordings on this LP were the most deeply concentrated, the most versatile, and quite simply the best of all. The more so because the label attached great importance to optimal studio conditions and allowed the instrumentalists plenty of time to make the recordings.


    In the present new release, The Clown can be enjoyed to the full from the very first note of Haitian Fight Song up until the words William Morris Sends Regrets in the title work.

    At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.



    During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.



    A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.



    We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.



    We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.



    To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    When driving a band with the upright, or double bass, Charles Mingus looked--and was--gigantic, in
    more ways than one. He had huge creative appetites (as well as being hot tempered), creating his own
    combination of hard bop, blues, and avant-garde jazz. There was no one more multi-faceted than Mingus
    between the 1950s and 1970s and of his many albums, Mingus Ah Um (1959) is considered to be a jazz
    classic.
    When Columbia first issued this album, 6 of the 9 tracks were shortened drastically to fit them on the LP.
    Later reissues (on CD) have included the tracks in their original full length, but this edition of the album
    had not been released on vinyl yet. We are excited to release the album 50 years after its original conception, as it was intended by the Angry Man of Jazz himself.

    Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus (Pure Pleasure)

    Charles Mingus has a fascinating way of offering music that is grounded in tradition while remaining startlingly original. The freshness of a piece like Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus, has the effect of rendering much of what passes for jazz as tedious. The band is small for Mingus, and includes Eric Dolphy on alto saxophone and bass clarinet, Ted Curson on trumpet, and Dannie Richmond on drums. It would be one of Dolphy and Curson's last recording dates with the artist, and they seem determined to go all out for it. The leader's bass line kicks off Folk Forms No. 1, followed by Dolphy outlining the melody, and then joined by Curson. A simple riff develops into a lively New Orleans funeral march that's developed for 12 minutes. Original Faubus Fables is serious in intent - a political attack on segregation governor Faubus - but Mingus and Richmond's singing is difficult to listen to with a straight face. Still, this doesn't distract from the wonderful music. Again and again, the elasticity of the sound is fascinating, at once spacious with the bass and drums balanced against the brass and then noisy, with the horns wailing and crying. The last two pieces, What Love? and the outrageously titled All the Things You Could Be by Now if Sigmund Freud's Wife Was Your Mother, are much looser, bordering on free jazz. The album accomplishes what the best of Mingus accomplishes: the perfect tension between jazz played as an ensemble and jazz played as totally free.

    Blues & Roots is an album by Charles Mingus, recorded in 1959 and released in 1960. Mingus explained the birth of this record in the album's liner notes: This record is unusual-it presents only one part of my musical world, the blues. A year ago, Nesuhi ErtegÜn suggested that I record an entire blues album in the style of Haitian Fight Song (in Atlantic LP 1260), because some people, particularly critics, were saying I didn't swing enough. He wanted to give them a barrage of soul music: churchy, blues, swinging, earthy. I thought it over. I was born swinging and clapped my hands in church as a little boy, but I've grown up and I like to do things other than just swing. But blues can do more than just swing. So I agreed.     Tijuana Moods is an album by Charles Mingus originally recorded in 1957 but not released until 1962. It is notable that the name Charlie Mingus appears on the cover of the original album. Mingus hated all nicknames derived from Charles (Don't call me Charlie; that's not a man's name, that's a name for a horse). All songs were composed by Mingus except Flamingo.

    Charles Mingus is usually known for his wild, soulful and avant-garde compositions. East Coasting is mellow by comparison, but it still cooks on a musical level. The Mingus touches are there; the trombone, drummer Danny Richmond and of course the dark emotional undercurrent looms large, too. The personnel are all Mingus regulars, except for pianist Bill Evans, who would not be described as 'soulful' in the traditional sense, but his introverted and sensitive style works well with Mingus's music. His playing on West Coast Ghost (the album's stand-out track) and Celia are two examples of Evans' ability to understand an artist's musical vision and play accordingly in his own beautifully original style.East Coasting sounds like the prototypical 1950s jazz recording. It's something one would hear in an attic converted to a bedroom where an artist or lonely soul might live. It's what a lot of people might believe Jazz would or should sound like. Highly recommended to Jazz lovers and perhaps more importantly to young people who have just been blown away by Kerouac's novel On The Road and have become interested in exploring Jazz. East Coasting will allow them to get a taste of lost creative America.

    Duke Ellington & John Coltrane is a jazz album by Duke Ellington and John Coltrane recorded on September 26, 1962 and released in February 1963 on Impulse! Records.


    For Ellington, it was one of many collaborations with fellow jazz-greats in the early 1960s, including Count Basie, Louis Armstrong, Coleman Hawkins, Max Roach and Charles Mingus. More unusually, it placed him in a jazz quartet setting (in this case, saxophone, piano, bass and drums), rather than his usual one in a big band.


    For Coltrane, it was an opportunity to work with one of jazz's all-time greats. It was one of several albums he recorded in the early 1960s in a more conservative and accessible style, alongside John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman and Ballads. Despite their differences in background, style and age (Ellington was 63 and Coltrane 36 when the tracks were recorded), it has been said that the two interacted seamlessly and subtly, neither one outshining the other.


    The quartet was filled out by the bassist and drummer from either of their bands. The tracks they recorded featured Ellington standards (In a Sentimental Mood), new Ellington compositions and a new Coltrane composition (Big Nick).


    Coltrane felt very honoured to work with Ellington: I was really honoured to have the opportunity of working with Duke. It was a wonderful experience. He has set standards I haven't caught up with yet. I would have liked to have worked over all those numbers again, but then I guess the performances wouldn't have had the same spontaneity. And they mightn't have been any better!

    Originally released as two 10" albums called Jazzical Moods, Jazz Composers' Workshop #2, was the result of one of Mingus' famed Jazz Workshop sessions, held in December 1954 and featuring Thad Jones (trumpet), John LaPorta (clarinet, alto sax) Teo Macero (tenor / baritone sax), Jackson Wiley (cello), and Clem DeRosa (drums). Mingus intended the Workshop as an outlet for young jazz composers, who might otherwise not be given the opportunity to record their own material, including Mingus' own compositions which, along with one composition by Teo Macero, are given center stage here.     Jazz Composers Workshop

    The Jazz Composers' Workshop album, originally released on Savoy in 1956, is made up of two sessions-recorded on 31 October 1954 (side A and tracks 5 & 6 on side B), and 30 January 1955 (tracks 1-4 on side B)-that were part of Mingus' influential "Jazz Composers' Workshop", a forum intended to give young jazz composers the opportunity to play and record their own compositions. The 1954 session-a sextet line-up featuring Charles Mingus (bass), John La Porta (clarinet & alto sax), Teo Macero (tenor & baritone sax), George Barrow (tenor & baritone sax), Mal Waldron (piano) and Rudy Nichols (drums)-was made up entirely of Mingus originals, with the exception of the 1925 standard "Tea For Two". Mingus' "Body & Soul", found here, did not appear on the original LP. The 1955 date-a quartet session led by pianist Wally Cirillo, and featuring Mingus on bass, tenor-saxophonist Teo Macero, and drummer Kenny Clarke-was actually intended as a showcase for four compositions by Cirillo, and featured one of the first, if not THE first, jazz composition to be based on a 12-tone row, "Transeason".

    Let My Children Hear The Music (Pure Pleasure)

    On the original LP issued by Columbia, Mingus thanked producer Teo Macero for his »untiring efforts in producing the best album I have ever made.« From his deathbed in Mexico in 1979 he sent a message to Sy Johnson (who was responsible for many of the arrangements on the album), saying that Let My Children Hear Music was the record he liked most from his career. Although Mingus' small-group recordings are the ones most often cited as his premier works, this album does, in fact, rank at the top of his oeuvre and compares favorably with the finest large-ensemble jazz recordings by anyone, including Ellington. The pieces had been brewing over the years, one from as far back as 1939, and had been given more or less threadbare performances on occasion, but this was his first chance to record them with a sizable, well-rehearsed orchestra.

    About Pure Pleasure



    At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.



    During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.



    A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.



    We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.



    We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.



    To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    'Wired' is Jeff Beck's 1976 solo album. It was this album that started a fruitful collaboration with former Mahavishnu Orchestra keyboardist Jan Hammer whom Beck toured with shortly thereafter. Beck and Hammer interplay extensively between each other by making his synthesizer sound almost identical to a guitar. The result was a more synthesized sound, hence its title, 'Wired'. Some tracks include members of the 'Blow by Blow' lineup. These tracks were recorded during the 'Blow by Blow' sessions but were left off that album and carried over to 'Wired. One of the most highly praised tracks is Beck's interpretation of the Charles Mingus classic 'Goodbye Pork Pie Hat'.

    Charlie Parker attracted young musicians like a magnet. Among them was trombonist Jimmy Knepper, who, at a time when tape recording was a brand-new thing, captured Bird in flight one winter night in Manhattan. He soared, and when Charles Mingus heard the music years later, he issued it as the first release on his new Jazz Workshop label. Since then, many private recordings of Parker have been made public.
