    The Modern Dance (Awaiting Repress)

Weird sounds, frantic rock 'n roll riffs, cartoony vocals and a typical garage sound contribute to a landmark album in experimental rock music. With a sound placed somewhere between Velvet Underground, Sex Pistols and The Residents, this crazy band from Cleveland delivers an extraterrestrial experience.

    Modern Guilt (Discontinued)

    Import

Modern Guilt is the eighth official studio album and eleventh overall by American alternative artist Beck. The album lasts 33 minutes, making it the shortest album by Beck to date. Modern Guilt features two contributions by Cat Power and was produced by Beck and Danger Mouse.

Modern Guilt indulges Beck's love of Sixties psychedelic music, and the results are vividly rendered - all acid-trip guitars, mod dance-party beats, daisy-chain harmonies and thundering percussion. But beneath the DayGlo arrangements lie some deeply bummed-out songs about living in a time of war (Walls), environmental degradation (Gamma Ray) and widening generation gaps (Youthless). Danger Mouse brings a hip-hop DJ's love of funky old rock records; Beck brings the end-of-the-Sixties, pre-apocalyptic hangover.

Taken as a whole, the album's first five songs stand among Beck's strongest work. The most dazzling example is Chemtrails, which nods through a heroin haze of droning guitars while Beck imagines jets flying above a sea full of dead people. The song title comes from a conspiracy theory that holds that some jet trails are actually chemical sprays engineered by the government for secret purposes. But you don't have to know the reference to feel the dread. Staring at the corpses, Beck sings, So many people, where do they go? The morbid answer is implied: No matter where all the lonely people come from, they all end up in the same place.

That last song sums up Beck's biggest issue on the album: Don't know what I've done, but I feel ashamed. That's modern guilt for you: knowing the world's going to hell and feeling partly responsible, but not quite knowing what to do about it. Some days, we're worse than you can imagine/And how am I supposed to live with that? he sings on Walls. A few lines later, he finds his own reason to carry on: We do the best with the souls we're given. And not long after he sings these words, the song cuts out abruptly in the middle of the melody. Like Tony Soprano said, you never know when your time is gonna come.

Respighi - Ancient Dances (Speakers Corner)

The common practice in concert houses today of performing early music on modern orchestral instruments is owed largely to the endeavors of Ottorino Respighi. His free transcription of Renaissance works for the lute (1932) opened the way to the rediscovery of forgotten rhythms and timbres. Although Respighi altered the structure of the music by dissecting phrases right down to their basic elements, re-ordering them and redefining their sonority by the use of heavy brass and timpani, the art of the ancient maestri remained unscathed. Cadences and harmonic idioms are given a modern coloring at the most, but are never destroyed. Antal Dorati and his famous Philharmonia Hungarica have all that is needed to bring the score to life. Even in opulent passages the individual instruments can be heard distinctly. This works particularly well in the first two suites in which each movement is treated to a process of refinement by means of differing orchestration. That the third suite, written purely for stringed instruments, soars away, just like the proverbial Aeolian harp is only to be expected from this orchestra.

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Brahms - Hungarian Dances (Speakers Corner)

Fritz Reiner dedicated himself to the interpretation of works by modern composers such as Richard Wagner, Richard Strauss and BÉla Bartók, and it suited him well to tackle works such as Brahms's Hungarian Dances and Dvorák's Slavonic Dances. These lively compositions require a conductor whose interaction with the orchestra is vivacious and animated. Reiner always demanded utmost concentration and perfection from his ensemble. Under his baton, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra plays with enthusiasm and without restaint; no trace of a sterile concert atmosphere is found in this recording.

Reiner's penchant for effects is not irritating, but rather adds highlights which support his highly musical interpretation, indeed one even forgets this trait when listening to the brilliant music.

From a tonal point of view, the sound is beautifully balanced and reaches the highest standards despite its recording date of 1960 - or maybe just for that reason? The recording is characterized by its brilliance, warmth and vivacity with the result that listening becomes a true musical pleasure.

The takeover for English dubstep producer Rusko (aka Christopher Mercer) has only just begun! His 2010 debut, O.M.G!, replete with his signature bone-rattling bass and anthemic melodies, was a critical and commercial hit that cemented him as one of the most exciting artists on the modern dance music scene.

His peers have championed him and Diplo, Santigold and Switch have featured his tracks in DJ sets and mixes. His own productions and remixes include The Prodigy and Basement Jaxx and his live shows have been drawing rapturous crowds across the globe.

His new album and second overall, Songs, finds the dauntless artist at his absolute best with a set of tracks that will dominate festivals and dance-floors for the foreseeable future and beyond!

All Rise: A Joyful Elegy For Fats Waller

Acclaimed pianist Jason Moran will release All Rise: A Joyful Elegy for Fats Waller, a collaboration with the vocalist Meshell
Ndegeocello that recasts the music of the legendary jazz entertainer Fats Waller as a modern dance party. The album-which was produced by
Ndegeocello and Blue Note Records president Don Was-is the ninth in a formidable catalog that Moran has been building on Blue Note since 1999.
All Rise features Moran hosting a changeable cast of musicians that includes vocalists Ndegeocello and Lisa E. Harris, his longtime trio The Bandwagon
featuring bassist Tarus Mateen and drummer Nasheet Waits, and a funky horn-inflected ensemble anchored by drummer Charles Haynes that features
trumpeter Leron Thomas and trombonist Josh Roseman, as well as guest saxophonist Steve Lehman. The album was recorded and mixed by Bob Power,
known for honing the sound on classic hip hop records by A Tribe Called Quest, Common and The Roots.

    The Past We Leave Behind

Mike Simonetti has decided to split from Italians Do It Better (Chromatics, Glass Candy) to focus on his new project, Pale Blue, as well as his new venture: the freshly minted label 2MR (Two Mikes Records). A collaboration between Simonetti and Captured Tracks, 2MR is an opportunity for Simonetti to start from a blank slate and release music he believes in. The first release on 2MR will be The Past We Leave Behind, the debut album from Pale Blue. During the writing process of Capricorn Rising, Simonetti was asked to remix tracks from the West Coast twosome Silver Hands. Immediately taken by the incredible range of lead-vocalist Elizabeth Wight, he reached out to collaborate. The result of the bi-coastal email exchange would eventually become Pale Blue. Pale Blue, referencing the term "Pale Blue Dot" , coined by Carl Sagan to refer to a photograph of planet Earth taken by the Voyager 1 space probe in 1990, was originally conceived around the time that Hurricane Sandy hit New York and came to completion with Simonetti's severance from Italians. Thus, many of the tracks that make up The Past grapple with themes of loss and new beginnings. The Past encompasses a myriad of sonic elements, ranging from rhythmic, melodic techno to atmospheric ambient productions, while also incorporating Simonetti's varied background in noise, drone, and even experimental dream pop. Above it all though, Wight's vocals remain the focal point, saturating the record with a lush melodic warmth that's so often missing in the electronic world. Musically, Pale Blue is a response to modern dance music and its constant fluctuations. It intentionally bears no obvious singles, nor club hits. While Simonetti, Wight and Jana Hunter (vocals on "Dusk in Parts") remain at its core, Pale Blue's philosophy is to keep everything open to collaboration. It does not aim to pigeonhole itself into a genre or any new vistas in music, but instead to a unifying sound produced collectively and harmoniously.

    Love And Devotion

Heterotic is husband-and-wife production team Lara Rix-Martin and Mike Paradinas, the latter the boss and founder of Planet Mu, and a celebrated producer in his own right as µ-Ziq. Their debut release is a composite of four striking instrumental tracks and four unique collaborations with Gravenhurst, the musical pen-name of Nick Talbot who is known for his dark, folk-tinged material for Warp Records. They were brought together by a mutual friend who sensed potential in the pairing.

For both Talbot and Paradinas, the project is something of a departure. Love & Devotion displays an affinity for hazy, dreamy, '80s-influenced electronic pop shot through with the dynamics and space of modern electronic dance music. The lyrics describe a world profoundly haunted by its past; while allusions to a key event are cloaked in ambiguity, their echoes in the present are described in visceral and magical detail. Love & Devotion's tightly coiled melodies cloaked in an insomniac haze, subtle harmonic shifts and strong vocal counter-melodies conveying sweeping sketches of a troubled, neon world.

    Lesser Unknown

Baltimore and Wham City resident Adventure's 2008 self-titled debut was an energetic journey through the outer expanses of an SID chip, an experience that took listeners whizzing over pixelated mountains and explored the darker corners of the most modernized urban setting.

This limited tonal range and lack of human vocals (save for a few dialogue samples from Bladerunner) may have made the music of Adventure seem a bit cold or impersonal, but on his newest release, Lesser Known, Benny Boeldt has brightened up his sound, adding soaring synth blasts and maximalist flourishes a la M83.

The airy snare and pulsing bass that open the album act as fanfare, like Boeldt welcoming the listener into the spacious new environment of Lesser Known. His aesthetic remains grounded in the 1980s, but the songs sound more like retro-futuristic radio hits than the arcade conjuring modulations of his first release. On tracks like Fool's Paradise and Smoke and Mirrors, Boeldt splits the difference between New Order and Nu Shooz, creating a sound that could please even the most cynical bedroom moper while gratifying any party-goer who's simply looking to dance.

Those fearing a record of wistful '80s pop facsimiles will be pleased to hear tunes like Relax the Mind and Lights Out connecting the dots that link Giorgio Moroder and his modern hit-making scion Dr. Luke. Dance beats permeate the bulk of Lesser Known, but the two closing songs introduce pensive atmospheres, perhaps laying the framework for Boeldt's future musical ventures.

No Matter How Long The Line At The Cafeteria, There's Always A Seat (Discontinued)

Original Album Art Expanded To A Gatefold Tip-On Jacket

They were, in the memory of Minor Threat frontman Ian MacKaye, Enormous men, decorated jump suits, a horn section, 200 friends onstage singing and dancing. They were Big Boys by name and by nature - and they had a big effect on US punk culture. When the prevailing trend was for playing hard and fast, this Austin, Texas four-piece played loose and funky. Their cult recordings struck a blend between punk ideology and clever humor, just as the band both railed against and celebrated the hardcore community that bore them.

Released at the time of their split in 1985 and now reissued by Modern Classics Recordings, the group's final album, No Matter How Long the Line Is At the Cafeteria, There's Always a Seat finds Big Boys continuing to innovate, even including the sound of turntable scratching on Common Beat, a sound rarely heard outside of hip-hop at the time. Songs like Which Way To Go and Narrow View echo their boredom and anger with the changing hardcore scene, while I Do Care and What's The Word illustrate the band's positive outlook for things to come.

Mathew Jonson has been a major figure on the music scene since the moment he emerged on Itiswhatitis in 2001. Since then he's turned out some 20-odd singles and EPs, plus remixes for the Chemical Brothers, Moby, Swayzak and Nelly Furtado. Add another nine singles and two albums with Cobblestone Jazz, plus two more EPs with Midnight Operator and the Modern Deep Left Quartet.

On his own, as a member of Cobblestone Jazz, and as a co-founder of the Wagon Repair label, Jonson has continually pushed and prodded electronic dance music's familiar forms into more distinctive shapes, without ever losing focus on the dance floor.

Building upon his signature sound by veering into slower, more expansive, more contemplative territory, Agents of Time finds Jonson displaying more range than ever before.

    Bones In Motion

Bones in Motion, the Northern Ireland hailing producer's latest fulllength
exercise, is dance music Leaving Records style - thoroughly
busted techno for the post-punk demo tape set. On a blurry path
between house music's early analog experiments and astounding
vistas in modern digital production, you will hear ghostly wisps of woozy
trance, distorted and dazzling, cooing through a thick haze of warbling
warmth and soulful, revolving resonance. Propelled rhythmically by
a ramshackle assemblage of maimed drum machines and battered
samples, Bones in Motion doggedly pedals ahead with no finish line in
sight - towards the endless possibilities of electronic music.

    Do You Feel Ok?

Since their 2013 Innovative Leisure debut, Exhibitions, Superhumanoids sound like they've traveled 30 years forward. Whereas their first album elicited comparisons to artists from the 1980s, Do You Feel Ok? reflects the present in all the power and clarity possible with modern technology. The synths are phosphorescent.

Lead singer Sarah Chernoff's vocals are sleek, ethereal, and ignore gravitational limitations. With propulsive drum machines and feathery hooks, the band blends futuristic electronic textures with classic regard for songwriting. Superhumanoids are singular, but their grace at switching between dance music and rock recall similar hybrids, Darkside and Caribou.

    Machine City EP

Limited Pressing Of 1000 Copies Worldwide W/ Spot Gloss Cover

A rare musical maturity weaving live instrumentation into an electronic sound world- Quietus

Crystallized melodic sparkle and rhythms running from Actress-like flights to low-slung bomp Boomkat

What Circle Traps do may not be dance music, but their subtlety of touch and the adeptness of sound design is sure to win
them fans from that quarter, as well as many others Inverted Audio

Created in an industrial workplace in Leyton, where Canary Wharf punctures the skyline, Circle Traps craft music made
in the image of the modern city. The group consists of Jack Wyllie, Duncan Bellamy and Will Ward and was formed in
East London in 2010 and quickly scored their first release on fellow East Londoner Subeena's Opit Records in early 2011.
Their eponymous debut EP earned serious critical praise from the likes of The Wire, Quietus and Fact Magazine. Their
attention to ambient textures is reminiscent of Actress and Daniel Lopatin, but their unique, multi-layered, crystalline
vision is consistently offset by dance floor impulses that nod to Detroit through the likes of Model 500 and Derrick May.
The Machine City EP is a lush amalgamation of textural, distorted melody and bassier dance floor leanings.

    Player Piano

    Includes Download Card

Player Piano is the second full length from Davye Hawks Memory Tapes. It was, like its predecessor, the highly acclaimed Seek Magic, recorded at Dayves home studio in rural New Jersey. While Seek Magic was quite an electronic sounding record with lots of dance music tropes, Player Piano is all about the melody.

Simply put, there are lots of catchy tunes here: sing-along choruses throughout the album and songs that feel very immediate and accessible, despite consistently dark lyrics that describe a disconnected mindset and a profound sense of isolation.

The template for Player Piano was that it would be keyboard-based psychedelic girl group songs, a sort of Motown suicide note. Largely eschewing modern beats this time in favor of drums that sound like The Kinks 60s records, there are still the spaces of modern R&B, along with '50s doo wop, krautrock and a couple of nods to Aphex Twin.

    Freaking Out EP

For Toro Y Mois Chaz Bundick, 2011 has seen the release of his acclaimed sophomore album, Underneath the Pine, remix work for Tyler, the Creator, a split 7 with Cloud Nothings, and a steady stream of international tour dates. Just over halfway through whats already been a busy year, the prolific producer has a brand new batch of lavishly funky material to offer.

Bundicks latest is no sloppily assembled bunch of Pine session throwaways. The Freaking Out EP was put to tape in June during a period of touring quiescence. The release finds Bundick reveling in twenty minutes of boogie, roping in the heavy sounds of groups like the Gap Band and Mtume. While the first two tracks are modern takes on the '80s post-disco vibe, Sweet sounds like the product of a Todd Edwards and Teddy Riley collaboration, with smooth synths weaving in and out of meticulously chopped and arranged vocal samples.

The New Jack influence spills over into the cover of Cherrelle and Alexander ONeills Saturday Love, in which a swingbeat carries along fluttering piano lines steeped in delay. The EPs crown jewel, I Can Get Love, sees Bundick assimilating styles of each of his to-date releases, with the synthesized funk of Causers of This, the irresistible hooks of Underneath the Pine, and dance alias Les Sins penchant for filter effects and house beats. Full of energy and crafted with a conciseness that begs repeated listens, Freaking Out is Toro Y Mois most concentrated venture into pure dance floor hedonism.

Over the past few years, Berkeley-based songwriter/producer Dan Casey (better known as Yalls) has issued everything from sun-kissed synth-pop to quirky hip-hop instrumentals, glitched excursions of post-aughts soul, to tropical-tinged, vocal-led boom-bap. He has regularly delivered immersive one-offs, inventive remixes, and guitar based works under his own name, Casey has built a reputation as a producer who may be hard to pin down in exact terms, but is always reliable for delivering delicious hooks and poignant melodies. Unite, the first proper full-length album by Yalls, is a cohesive amalgamation of the sound Casey has been exploring. It combines elements of mid-60's funk, modern experimental beatmaking, and pop music - firmly placing the listener in a unique space somewhere between defunct dance halls and outer space.

    Revolution Radio

Produced by Green Day and recorded in Oakland, Revolution Radio is a potent 12-track blitz of angst-ridden anthems that unites Green Day's fully formed stylistic approach with lyrical themes that address the complexities and uncertainties of modern day existence. Musically, the album is raw, visceral, and fearless -- solidifying the band's reign as one of the leading voices in rock music. The first single, Bang Bang, released today and inspired by recent events, marks a welcome return from a band with more to say than ever.

Of course the world has lost its collective mind... and me, Mike and TrÉ are lost souls too, said Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong. Revolution Radio is a movement for lost souls to come together... dance together... sing together... and most of all, find each other. That's what the spirit of Green Day has been about since day one.
