Thelonious Sphere Monk (1917-1982) remains one of the most highly regarded jazz artists in history, known for his unique style on and off the piano. Monk was a rule-breaker, pushing the limits of his genre, with his dissonant chords, unconventional melodies and progressive rhythms. Initially dismissed an eccentric by the musical elite, Monk stood his ground and came to be celebrated for his complexities, considered by many to be a genius.

Miles Davis & The Modern Jazz Giants

    Import

The Complete, Historic, All-Star Recording Session Of Decemeber 24, 1954. Miles Davis and the Modern Jazz Giants is an album recorded by Miles Davis, for Prestige Records. Most of the album comes from a session on December 24th 1954, but 'Round Midnight is from the sessions by Davis's new quintet in 1956 which resulted in Steamin' with the Miles Davis Quintet and three other albums to fulfill Davis's contract with Prestige.

The 1954 session is notable as the only time Thelonious Monk made a studio recording with Davis - the two men did not get on well, as Davis felt Monk ought to be laying out (refraining from playing) during the trumpeter's solos. Ira Gitler, who was present at the session and wrote the sleeve notes for the album, dispels the myth that the two men confronted each other physically, but there was argument throughout the session. The first take of The Man I Love has a false start caused by Monk asking when he should start playing, and an exasperated Davis telling engineer Rudy Van Gelder, Hey Rudy, put this on the record, man - all of it!.

    Coltrane (Mono)

After establishing himself as a star on the rise with the Miles Davis quintet, the Thelonious Monk quartet, and various Prestige recordings with Sonny Rollins, Hank Mobley, and Tadd Dameron, John Coltrane made his debut as a leader on this excellent self-titled 1957 release. The 6-song set finds the tenor sax giant joined by John Splawn (trumpet), Sahib Shihab (baritone sax), Mal Waldron (piano), Red Garland (piano), Paul Chambers (bass) and Al Heath (drums) on a pair of Trane's own compositions in Straight Street and Chronic Blues, alongside Cal Massey's Bakai and pop fare such as Violets for Your Furs, While My Lady Sleeps and Time Was.

    Thelonious Monk & Sonny Rollins

Collected from three separate recording sessions held between November of 1953 and October of 1954, this Prestige release does indeed feature the pairing of the two jazz giants Thelonious Monk and Sonny Rollins, but only on three of the album's five tracks. Monk is the mainstay throughout however, presented here in trio, quartet and quintet settings. It is the quintet numbers with Rollins, that both open (The Way You Look Tonight, I Want To Be Happy) and close (Friday the 13th) the album, that shine the brightest though, the distinct nuances of Rollins' tenor wonderfully contrasting Monk's artful piano lines!
