    Tyranny And Mutation (Speakers Corner)

Let's look back nostalgically to the days when influential DJs presented their precious wares on the radio, which were lapped up by listeners and music pirates alike. That progressive, perhaps psycho, rockers such as the Blue Öyster Cult led a somewhat niche existence makes one all the more eager to listen to the truly awesome discs recorded by this group in their early days. An important start was made with the re-release of BÖC's Secret Treaties (Columbia KC 32858), which is now followed by Tyranny And Mutation - another great disc. Although the band offers a mix of slightly subdued, milder pieces, the opening number The Red & The Black makes it fully clear that we are in for a dizzy roller-coaster ride here. Subsequently the Black side with its straightforward guitar riffs is mixed together with a complex melody and results in an amazingly colourful sound (O.D.'d On Life Itself), it is refreshingly naive, full of feisty complicated rock (Baby Ice Dog), and soars to celestial heights in Wings Wetted Down with its polyphonic male voices.

After the death of 'Lemmy' Kilmister in 2015, we can now enjoy only one group with a heavy-metal Umlaut in its name. But who wants to wait around until some radio DJ puts this great chunk of meaty rock'n'roll on the turntable?

    Musicians:

    • Eric Bloom (guitar, keyboards, vocal)

    • Allen Lanier (keyboards, guitar)

    • Donald 'Buck Dharma' Roeser (guitar, vocal)

    • Joe Bouchard (bass, vocal, keyboards)

    • Albert Bouchard (drums, vocal)

Recording: 1972 at Columbia Studios, New York City, by Tim Geelan

Production: Murray Krugman and Sandy Pearlman

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Born With Stripes

San Diegos The Donkeys strike a balance of smiling, surfer mysticism and winking, slacker mystique. They reanimate the charming hallmarks of sunshine-rock past without being sepia-toned retro or bubblegum-cloying. There is an innate playfulness and honesty to the music they make. Its a dynamic that has made public champions of keen-eared musicians like John Darnielle (Mountain Goats) and Craig Finn (The Hold Steady). It was Darnielle who claimed The Donkeys were benevolent keepers of what he called The Antidote to an unnamed sickness plaguing indie rock.

Born With Stripes is an altogether less twangy affair than the bands 2008 Dead Oceans debut, Living On The Other Side. The nods to Grateful Dead and Buffalo Springfield are better balanced with echoes of other Cali arists, notably Pavement and Beck. The country-rock flairs are often overtaken by powerpop hooks. What some might call a lazy melody is really just a melody on its own clock. Nice and relaxed.

Ceiling Tan, feels like a lost weekend in Tijuana with Mutations and Crooked Rain, and may well be the bands mission statement. I Like The Way You Walk also cops a 90s alt-rock lick, but ditches any esoterica for earnest yearnings and sweet nothings.

What makes the Donkeys so potent is not their ability to rehash the past, its that their records embody a pureness, an authenticity that is unmatched in contemporary music. We were not the only ones to feel this undeniable connection. The Donkeys had a brush with Hollywood when Lost producer Eddy Kitsis heard the band, and cast them as Geronimo Jackson, a band he had written into the Lost story as an obscure San Francisco band from the 70s, who were peers of the Grateful Dead. Kitsis heard the Donkeys and felt they so embodied this fictitious band, that he actually had the band re-record their song Excelsior Lady as Dharma Lady and weaved it into the TV show.

The album was mixed by Pernice Brothers Thom Monahan, whose involvement not only gives us the crispest, warmest Donkeys recordings to date, it also serves to remind us of the bands loose connections to an array of psych-dappled kindred spirits: Vetiver, Papercuts, BrightblackMorning Light, Devendra Banhart. Monahan was not the only outsider the band collaborated with on Born With Stripes. The playful album artwork was created by California illustrator and cartoonist Tony Millionaire, best known for his comics Maakies and Sock Monkey, and as the creator of the Adult Swim show Drinky Crow.

    Spills Out

On third album Spills Out, Brooklyn noise-punk mischief-makers Pterodactyl have mutated from their abrasive loft-show roots into a glorious, broken-pop juggernaut. The band's squealing, sweat-soaked art-bustle had rapidly put them alongside contemporaries like Oneida, These Are Powers and Parts & Labor; but Spills Out gently leads the trio towards the uplifting, wistful harmonies of '60s rockers like The Zombies, CSNY and the pre-acid Beatles.

    The Call Of The Cosmos

Lavishing in pop structures but drawing in myriad influences to the wondrous black hole, The Call Of The Cosmos features some shimmering spaciousness but also sleazy exotica-themes, not unlike a Lee Hazelwood production infected with Joe Meek s ghost. Roswell s own songwriting and voice recalls a solar-fried Bobby Gillespie, an artist he no doubt originally influenced with the Spacemen 3. Elsewhere, there s truly psychedelic excursions into outsiderdom which come off like the The Seeds mutating ever larger into lysergic-dipped monsters.

    Mr. Impossible

For over fifteen years, the highly influential Black Dice have continuously reinvented and mutated punk music into new sonic stews. The New York based trio of Eric Copeland, Bjorn Copeland, and Aaron Warren have released scores of albums, eps, and singles on iconic labels (Gravity, 31g,Troubleman, dfa, Paw Tracks), that document their musical travels, from raw brutal thrash to inside-out pop anthems from way out. Donovan Blanc

Joseph Black and Raymond Schwab spent the years of 2011-2013 as full-blown pop junkies
in a group called Honeydrum. Seeking ephemeral moments of truth and self-relevance, the
two spent day after day on the third floor of a run-down building in a hole of a city in New
Jersey, churning out what would become Honeydrum's nine EPs. These releases stand as sonic
manifestations of the two hook addicts' pop addled brainwaves buried deep in blurry mires
    of fizz and fuzz.

As with all growth both physical and metaphysical, the inevitable mutation of their vision was
governed by evolutionary laws beholden to no man; atop a cloud of rich vocal harmony,
polished guitar arrangements, driving rhythmic momentum, angular meter and key changes,
and breathy Mellotron passages, Donovan Blanc, a post-human entity began to appear.
Incubated by the warm winds of spring and with a newfound focus and clarity, early versions of songs such as "Minha Menina" and "Girlfriend", rife with brown tones and muted
sunshine, served as the foundation for Donovan Blanc's debut self-titled LP on Captured
    Tracks.

Donovan Blanc is the realization of a purified version of the duo's work, fit for consumption by disciples of technicolor baroque and singer-songwriter pop music. The record's aim
isn't to evoke nostalgia, but rather to re-contextualize the familiar and foreign to create new
moments; some that are bold and exuberant, and others that are reserved and melancholic.
Donovan Blanc delivers a glimpse of the lush textures and vivid colors of pop's golden age
    through a modern lens.

    Home Everywhere

Another LP of new material by the recently reformed original lineup of Medicine so rather quickly, you may ask ? Yes indeed, pal. "Making records is where it's at", says Medicine, collectively.

During this past year Brad Laner, Elizabeth Thompson and Jim Goodall
eschewed the 90's nostalgia touring circuit trod by their peers and instead
dug deep to bring you "Home Everywhere": A collection of new songs
created with a gaze that is omni-directional. An answer to no other band,
movement or genre (don't be lazy, you). An ambitious work that could be no one else but said three lifer music weirdies in full inspiration mode.

Last year's LP "To The Happy Few", their first in 18 years, impressed and
perhaps surprised many with its vital creativity and fiery performances. But Medicine was really just getting re-acquainted in public.

An opening volley of several hook laden three minute noise-pop gems be- gins to mutate with the introduction of Brazilian inspired sounds and rhythms.
While that may sound incongruous, it is still quite Medicinal through and through. And that's just side one.

Side two begins with something even more unlikely: A light sprinkling of love- ly piano and an invitation to relax. Of course it's only a temporary respite
and within the same tune soon comes a beam of guitar as searing as any of
the more extreme moments of the band's discography. Then comes a rather Can-like tune featuring the recorded debut of drummer Jim Goodall's trombone drone stylings before we reach the true heart of the platter: The
LP's namesake, "Home Everywhere". An eleven and a half minute multi-part
album-within-an-album which begins as a sprightly celebration of domestic
bliss and ends with a comely invitation to leave the planet set to an extend- ed cleansing cosmic fire of sonic madness. Because art (and lots of Finnish experimental music cassettes, truth be told).

    Mysteries

East London's Tigercats return with their new album and first release for Fortuna POP! Mysteries is vividly emotional and sonical-ly expansive, blending the very best of indiepop with complex song structures, lush production and beautiful arrangements. Tigercats combine the talents of songwriter, singer and guitarist Duncan Barrett with his brother Giles on bass, Laura Kovic on keyboards and vocals, and Jonny Evans on drums, as well as recent recruit Paul Rains from Allo Darlin' on guitar. And on Mysteries they're joined by living legend Terry Edwards (Gallon Drunk / Tindersticks), who contributes saxo-phone and trumpet on several tracks. Tigercats have toured across Europe, playing at Primavera and appearing on Spanish TV, while back in the UK they've appeared at both Indietracks and End of the Road festivals. Many of the songs on the album have been live sta-ples, starting off one way and mutating in to something totally different, giving the songs time to grow and develop before heading in to the studio. And once they did head in, bassist Giles Barrett's day job at London's legendary Soup Studios allowed the band nearly unlimited time to get deeper in to the recording process - so deep that it verged on insanity. Mysteries is the sound of a band of outstanding musicians fulfilling their potential and using their talents in the studio to realise their musical vision, retaining their infectious hooks, their heart and their sheer danceability, and coupling it with a bright new contempo-rary sound. Superbly crafted and full of personality, Tigercats' second album suggests that they won't remain a mystery much longer.

    Waterfall

It's safe to say since his emergence at the tail end of 2011 Evian Christ, aka Joshua Leary, has had a whirlwind two years. Off the back of his breakthrough mixtape "Kings And Them" which came out on Tri Angle Records in February 2012, the 24 year old, Ellesmere Port, UK native has produced on Kanye West's "Yeezus", collaborated with acclaimed conceptual artist Matthew Barney, released the notably abstract sound-piece Duga-3, performed around the world alongside the likes of Purity Ring, Actress and Four Tet and garnering positive reviews and features in global tastemaker press including Details Magazine, Dazed & Confused, Pitchfork and VIBE amongst many others.

Most notably, Evian Christ has signed a publishing deal with DONDA, run by Kanye West, where he will continue with his work as a producer.

His latest EP "Waterfall" finds Evian Christ exhibiting a creative restlessness that continues to make it harder to pigeonhole this young, evolving artist. On "Kings And Them" Evian Christ conjured up a sound that was influenced by hip hop as it much as it was by more ambient forms of music. On "Waterfall" Evian Christ has taken his unique sound into a far noisier and more aggressive territory.

The lead track from "Waterfall", the hip hop laced 'Salt Carousel' may open the record with the sort of dreamlike serenity that typified the vast majority of Kings, but it's really the quiet before the storm as harsher, more abrasive elements rush in and dominate. On 'Fuck Idol' huge walls of digital distortion clash with code red beats that grow more and more frantic as the track progresses, while the title track is a blast of metallic dancehall dread that mutates multiple times over the space of 4 minutes into something truly epic.

Having spent the past year experimenting and challenging himself, and in refusing to simply duplicate a sound that garnered him so much attention to begin with and led one of, if the not, the world's biggest hip hop artists to seek him out, "Waterfall" finds Evian Christ growing in confidence as a producer and continuing to elude any sort of easy categorization.
Recorded partially in his hometown of Ellesmere Port and partially in New York, "Waterfall" was mixed by Noah Rubin (Pusha T, Wu Tang Clan) and mastered by Heba Kedry (The Mars Volta, Liturgy, Fis). Track 2, 'Propeller', contains a sample of 'Nine' by close friend and affiliate producer, Lukid.

    Whiteout Conditions

'Cohesive.' It's a word New Pornographers founder A.C. Newman still sounds a little bit surprised to say as he describing the band's seventh album, Whiteout Conditions. It's a quality that you wouldn't necessarily intuitively associate with a so-called supergroup that, by its very collective nature, seems bound to have a good deal of stylistic variance built into the formula (or lack of it). Can an outfit built on the appeal of multiple frontmen and frontwomen develop a signature sound after all? Maybe, and maybe better late than never.

'On other records,' says Newman, 'it felt like sometimes it was very clear: oh, this is a fast one with me singing, and then the next would be a slow song with Neko (Case) singing. And I've always liked that in a White Album kind of way - being a band that just does whatever the hell they want from track to track. But when we did Brill Bruisers (the band's previous album, released in 2014), it was the first time where I thought: Let's try to make a cohesive record. Let's try to give it a sound and see how focused we can make it. And on this record, I think we went a lot farther down that road.'

The focus on Whiteout Conditions (The New Pornographers' first album on their own imprint, Collected Works Records, in partnership with Concord Records) comes down to a couple of notable shifts: increased tempos, for one, and increasingly blended vocals, for another. There are fewer extended solo lead vocal turns by any of the band members and more choral effects or interplay between the men and women in the group. If you're of a certain age, you might start thinking of them as an indie-rock Mamas and the Papas, or... 'I'll take that,' Newman says, 'but the Fifth Dimension is always the one we're going for, way more than the Mamas and the Papas! I hesitate to throw out catchphrases that might be repeated back to me a thousand times, but at the beginning of this record, there was some thinking that we wanted it to be like a Krautrock Fifth Dimension. Of course, our mutated idea of what Krautrock is probably doesn't sound like Krautrock at all. But we were thinking: Let's try and rock in a different way.'

    Pop Crimes

Rowland S. Howard started playing in teenage bands in late
70s Melbourne. Whilst still a callow youth he wrote "Shivers," an
undisputed classic, (quietly ignoring the fact that Rowland perhaps
doesn't see it that way and approaches the song as if it was written
by someone else). The song was recorded by his band The Boys Next
Door who mutated into the Birthday Party and then relocated to
Europe to wage a guerrilla campaign against the trivialities of the
80s, until they turned their fire upon themselves and disintegrated
    mid-decade.

Whilst his former associates have moved on to weekend colour
supplement acceptability, Rowland has commonly been perceived
as the banished wastrel prince... exiled to a squalid garret on the
colder edges of the kingdom, accompanied only by his dreams and
inclinations. His demeanour (pale, gaunt, stick thin, sickly, dark
humoured, fatalistic) has perhaps inadvertently added far too much
credence to this interpretation of events. The shadow of this myth
has seemingly obscured the sheer volume of his creativity and the
    singularity of his musical vision.

Always respected by his peers, a scan through Rowland's
catalogue of work sees him allied with the likes of Lydia Lunch,
Thurston Moore, Wim Wenders, Barry Adamson, The Gun Club, Nikki
Sudden, the Beasts Of Bourbon, the Hungry Ghosts and HTRK.
Rowland's own ensemble These Immortal Souls gun their engines
in the ill-lit background and the legacy of his work with The Birthday
Party scores the skin of successive generations of musicians and
    fans.

But it's a history Rowland would gleefully put a match to. With or
without it Rowland S. Howard would make tense, beautiful music,
would deliver us his personal vision of the world, would create Pop
    Crimes.

Long-time faithful friends Mick Harvey (who played with Rowland
for over 30 years), JP Shilo (Hungry Ghosts) and producer Lindsay
Gravina make for a formidable backline. Out front the guitar playing
couldn't be any one else but Rowland S Howard and his weary,
almost journalistic vocal delivery dispassionately sits amidst the
sweaty panic of the music, adding to the ill ease.

The band lurch in to Pop Crimes as if dragging a rain soaked body
across a muddy field. The ghosts of Lee Hazlewood, Snatch, Sergio
Leone, The Shangri-Las and nameless guys from a never known chain
gang watch on. Within the first few breaths Rowland references
Stalin, Calvary and genocide, whilst razoring guitar lines the current
crop of post-punk revisionists could only fantasize about.

"Shut Me Down" is Rowland at his most romantic, though
inevitably it's shot through with loss and longing. If only Dusty
Springfield were alive to revel in its drama. Talk Talk's 'Life's What
You Make It' is re-imagined as if it had risen from the grind of a
Detroit auto plant's assembly line. '(I Know) A Girl Called Johnny'
sees Jonnine D from HTRK sidle up to the microphone for a duet
that will melt even the coldest of hearts. It's a glorious missing link
between the New York girl group sound and the street smarts of
Suicide. Townes Van Zandt's "Nothin" is given a chilling tenement
building transformation. "Wayward Man" has the band wailing like
alarm sirens before Rowland emerges at his most contemplative
with the gorgeous, fragile build of "Ave Maria." Final track "The
Golden Age Of Bloodshed" takes the album out on a swaggering,
swashbuckling epic, with salvation slipping through the narrator's
    fingers.

    Petals Have Fallen

Kieren Gallear aka DELS returns with his second album, "Petals Have Fallen," and makes the step up from potential contender to full scale champ. Delivering on the potential he displayed on his first album, "GOB," DELS has developed his own unique take on hip hop - intensely personal and poetic but also funny, scuzzy, raw and sonically adventurous. All the elements were there with his first record, but no one could have expected him to display them with such consistency, such delicacy and such supreme confidence. His explanation of the title of the record perfectly sums up Gallear's aesthetic, plus providing a handy definition of what it is to make art: "the urge to protect something precious that will ultimately fall apart." There's plenty that you could pick out individually from this record. From the sung opening of "Limbo" there are spine-tingling moments galore. The hard rhyming over an epic beat on "Fall Apart." The combination of Kerry Leatham's vocals, Bonobo's beat and DELS' wordplay on "Pulls." The free-rolling exuberance of "Pack of Wolves." The delicacy of "Petals Have Fallen." Plus, of course, re-works of the brilliant "Bird Milk" and "You Live In My Head," both of which were included on the "Bird Milk" EP last year and hammered by Zane Lowe, Annie Mac and Huw Stephens, amongst others. But just as impressive is the consistent feel of the record as an album, where moods and images and sonics develop and mutate but hold together as a whole. Some of this comes from the deployment of DELS' long-term collaborator, Kwes in the role of Executive Producer and "reducer."Only one of the tracks is produced solely by Kwes, with beats provided by Bonobo, Micachu (fresh from her triumph as the soundtracker for "Under the Skin"), Blue May, Eli-T and others. But Kwes and DELS took every track back to his studio to provide additional production and an overall feel to the whole album. Throw in guest performances by some of the most exciting singers in the UK today (Kerry Leatham, Rosie Lowe, Tirzah, Bila and Elan Tamara) and you have a palette which has been extended even further. More even than any of that is the leap in DELS' own abilities. Put simply, Gallear has developed the confidence to be exactly and only himself - at times sensitive and romantic, at others sarcastic and funny, even ready to take the piss out of himself: "Some say I'm anxious/ I just think I need to eat cheese less." Gallear has talked about how he uses visuals as well as music to inspire his writing and "Petals Have Fallen" is a record which you almost see as much as hear, one in which moments in time are suspended in images like prehistoric insects in amber. Already hotly-tipped as an MC and carving out a successful career as a designer and video director, DELS brings together all his interests and talents on this, a stand out album, which delivers and then some on The Times' verdict that he is "the future of UK hip hop."

    Psychic Temple II

It may seem hard to imagine a place where indie rock visionaries like Sufjan Stevens and Castanets' Ray Raposa could meld minds with the genius of Brian Wilson, where death metal pioneer Paul Masvidal might wield his legendary six-string chops on a blissed-out soul ballad, where adventurous young jazz players like Kris Tiner and Devin Hoff share credit with Mars Volta keyboardist Ikey Owens and singer/songwriter Aaron Roche.

Long Beach composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist (not to mention truck driver) Chris Schlarb has not only imagined such a place but has now made it manifest for a second time. Released by Asthmatic Kitty, Psychic Temple II is a labor of love, envisioned by Schlarb to bring his most far-ranging inspirations to life - as he puts it, "a dream ensemble that could never actually exist." The ensemble's sophomore release was painstakingly constructed over more than a year with the cooperation of some of the most progressive musical minds from a staggering variety of genres.

"I love interesting juxtapositions, where you bring together people from different communities," Schlarb says. He cites iconoclastic predecessors like Bill Laswell's ever-changing group Material, which once brought together a young Whitney Houston with jazz legend Archie Shepp and future Soundgarden and Red Hot Chili Peppers producer Michael Beinhorn to cover a song by Hugh Hopper of English prog-rock pioneers Soft Machine. On 2010's Psychic Temple, Schlarb assembled a 29-member ensemble that included Minutemen bassist Mike Watt, vocalist Julianna Barwick, and pianist Mick Rossi of the Philip Glass Ensemble.

"It seems like a crazy combination of people," Schlarb says, "but they're all just musicians. Why not bring them all together? It may not always work, but it's always worth reaching further."

Psychic Temple II reaches beyond the long-form experiments of its predecessor for a more tightly focused yet conceptually dense collection whose songs are no less exploratory for their briefer durations. "I never see the point in continuing to regurgitate," Schlarb says of the new album's unique direction. "What was natural at that time would now feel contrived. I have to keep moving forward."

Schlarb also includes three cover songs by composers who share his boundary-demolishing mindset: Joe Jackson's "Steppin' Out," Frank Zappa's "Sofa No. 2," and Brian Wilson's "'Til I Die," a gorgeous, lesser-known Beach Boys song that features vocals by Sufjan Stevens, Castanets' Ray Raposa, and Cryptacize's Nedelle Torrisi.

Psychic Temple had its origins in Create (!), a large improvising ensemble with which Schlarb used to perform. The free-form group would often incorporate multiple drummers, a concept that Schlarb decided to pursue in a more composition-oriented setting. No matter how much Psychic Temple mutates from track to track, the rhythmic possibilities of its two drummers (in this case, Tabor Allen and Andrew Pompey) remain intact.

Schlarb's imaginative leaps are evidenced from the outset of Psychic Temple II, on the intoxicating opening track, "Seventh House." Featuring the sinuous vocals of Sarah Negahdari, who recently served as touring bassist for Silversun Pickups, the song weaves together lyrical and musical references to Neil Young's "Will To Love," to the Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers album Pisces, and to Sheena Easton's notorious Prince-penned pop hit "Sugar Walls."

Then there's "The Starry King Hears Laughter" and "She Is the Golden World," two songs that pay simultaneous homage to poet William Blake and jazz legend Bill Evans; or "Solo in Place," Schlarb's attempt to filter classic soul through his own "weird prism," a missing link between the Isley Brothers and the Alan Parsons Project that features guitar wizard Paul Masvidal of the death metal bands Death and Cynic.

Despite such a mind-blowing array of talent from the farthest reaches of the musical spectrum, Psychic Temple II is a surprisingly cohesive album, a testament to Schlarb's clear controlling vision. "One of the fundamental flaws of modern music is the idea of the record as a pastiche," he says. "With hip-hop and R&R records starting in the '90s, you had ten tracks with ten different producers so every track sounded completely different. There was no aesthetic where you could just put on a record and listen to it beginning to end. I admire people who are control freaks."

Schlarb has wielded control over a number of vastly different projects himself. The New York Observer called his debut solo album, Twilight & Ghost Stories, "40 minutes of avant-garde bliss," while Interoceans, recorded with experimental jazz duo I Heart Lung, was chosen by NPR as one of the top five jazz albums of 2008. He composed the score for Nicklas "Nifflas" Nygren's video game Nightsky and has received grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and Meet the Composer. In 2001, Schlarb founded the eclectic Sounds Are Active record label, which has released music by the likes of Nels Cline, Mike Watt, and Castanets.

The Doctor Is In And Out (Pure Pleasure)

In 1976, Yusef Lateef's as restless a spiritual seeker as there ever was in the field of music, revisited some of his earliest themes in the context of modern sonic frameworks: The Eastern modal and melodic frameworks of his Prestige sides, such as Eastern Sounds, Cry!/Tender, and Other Sounds, brought to bear in much more sophisticated, complex, and grooved-out ways -- after all, it had been 20 years or more. The groove referred to is funk and soul. Funk itself was mutating at the time, so Lateef's interpolation at the crossroads of all ports in the musical journey was not only valid in 1976, but also necessary.

For this recording, he utilized an absolutely huge group of musicians, bringing them in for this or that part, or a sound, or a particular vamp. Some of those present were Kenny Barron, Ron Carter, Dom Um Romao, Al Foster, Billy Butler, Anthony Jackson, a five-piece brass section, and a synth player. Lateef, as always, was offering evocative glimpses of geographical, psychological, spiritual, and emotional terrain in his compositions, but not in predictable ways. There's the deep minor-key meditation on blues and evolving thematic variations on Hellbound that becomes a Latin funk tune; the airy, contemplative, and skeletal Mystique, which may use a repeating rhythmic phrase but explores every inch of its margins via a string section and Lateef's flute solo; the smooth, urban, bluesy funk of Mississippi Mud; the completely out electronic musique of Technological Homosapien that becomes a series of synth squeals and an erratically tumbling bassline; and the wonderfully warped mariachi variation (sung in white-boy English) that featured the band playing bluesy hard bop over an age-old recorded track on In A Little Spanish Town. It's a weird way to end a record, but then, it's a weird and wonderful

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Swim Team

Music thrives on freedom. Without boundaries or blueprints, songs not only come to life, but last for a very long time to come.

Dirty Heads' sixth full-length offering, SWIM TEAM [Five Seven Music], finds the group at its most free. The Orange County, CA quintet-Jared "Dirty J" Watson [co-lead vocals], Dustin "Duddy B" Bushnell [co-lead vocals, guitar], Jon Olazabal [percussion], Matt Ochoa [drums], and David Foral [bass]-traffic between alternative, hip-hop, reggae, and rock with the same spirit and spark that's powered them since the beginning.

As a result, the hooks naturally became bigger, the experimentation got bolder, and the smoke blazed brighter

"We've put in so much hard work over the years that we have the freedom to do whatever we want now," affirms Jared. "Making the new record, I re-fell in love with everything about being in this band: writing music, playing shows, having fun, and where we're at. We spent every day not only working on songs, but laughing our asses off. What other people said didn't matter. The rules of being a proper songwriter and all of that bullshit didn't matter. If something felt good, we left it in there. It was so cool to get back to that feeling. Creating music was completely free. It was just fucking fun!"

For the better part of 15 years, Dirty Heads have quietly worked towards this point. In 2008, they emerged with the fan favorite full-length debut, Any Point In A Storm. Signature single "Lay Me Down" achieved an RIAA gold certification and clinched #1 on the Billboard Alternative Chart for 11 weeks-a record run for that year. 2014 saw Sound of Change debut at #8 on the Billboard Top 200, garner acclaim from the likes of Esquire, and vault "My Sweet Summer" to the top of Alternative Radio. Most recently, 2016's self-titled Dirty Heads went Top 15 on the Top 200 and spawned the smash "That's All I Need," which racked up over 10.5 million Spotify streams and counting. Noisey summed up the album best as, "Killer." Simultaneously, they remain one of the world's most engaging and exhilarating live acts, selling out sheds coast to coast.

During early 2017, the group started writing songs with no expectations or plans and soon found themselves working on what would become SWIM TEAM. That boundless environment immediately fostered inspiration.

"We had some time off, and we were like, 'We might as well get in the studio and see what happens'," recalls Duddy. "In doing that, we were able to come up with some really good ideas. We didn't have any pressure to put out new music. It's a lot more ambient and simple. We went heavier on the hip-hop, which I love. After the first song, we agreed to just finish a record. We were all inspired."

In order to capture those moments, Dirty Heads handpicked a team of collaborators-Jonas Jeberg [Demi Lovato, Juicy J, Jason Derulo], "Lay Me Down" partner-in-crime Rome [Enrique Iglesias] of Sublime with Rome, Blueprint [Jay-Z, Kanye West, Timbaland, Eminem, Nas, Prodigy], Oren Yoel [Miley Cyrus, Kanye West], HEAVY [Andrew McMahon], and The Score-and recorded between Los Angeles and Orange County.

"On the last album, it was like a mad speed dating rush with a bunch of producers to see who worked best," says Jared. "We had never done that before, and it was cool. It was a different vibe, studio, and guy every day. There are only a few producers on SWIM TEAM. The only new guys were HEAVY, and we hit it off immediately. We were molding and mutating what Dirty Heads are but with something new. We wanted to create songs we hadn't heard before."

That brings us to the first single "Vacation." Produced by Jeberg, "Vacation" sways from bright sun-soaked piano and booming horns into an unshakable and hashtaggable chant, "Hey, I'm on vacation every single day cuz I love my occupation. Hey, I'm on vacation, if you don't like your life then you should go and change it."

"We spent eight years in a van, worked hard, and now we're here," says Duddy. "It's almost like a vacation now."

"I want 'Vacation' to speak to people out there who have paid their dues and love their jobs," adds Jared. "For those who don't enjoy what they do every day, it sends a message that, 'It's not too late to do something else.' If you're not happy, life is way too fucking short to hang around and do things you don't love. We're blessed to do something we're passionate about. We hope you feel the same!"

Working with HEAVY, the emotional "Celebrate" volleys from vulnerable verses into confessional raps and a heart-wrenching refrain about being away from home. It's a classic pop ballad Dirty Heads-style with the power to resonate amongst listeners everywhere.

"It strikes a chord for those of us who travel a lot and leave friends and families at home," explains Duddy. "We miss so much on the road. We're humans. We have wives. We have kids. We're happy to do what we love, but at the same time we miss our loved ones."

Then there's "High Tea," which tows the line between 1940s-inspired crooning and grimy East Coast rhyme gymnastics like The Ink Spots guesting on Paul's Boutique.

"That's my favorite song we've ever written," beams Jared. "The melody was super catchy, and there's an old school guitar part. We juxtapose those mellow, airy, and ethereal elements with hard-hitting hip-hop. We were drinking these weed kombuchas at the time," he laughs.

In the end, SWIM TEAM represents Dirty Heads at their most dynamic, diverse, and definitive.

"When you hear it, I just want you to walk away thinking, 'Damn, that sounds like Dirty Heads'," concludes Duddy.

Jared leaves off, "I want you to feel the same way I did making it. Join this weird, odd, and wonderful secret society we've created over the past fifteen years. You're part of it now. Welcome to the team."

    Deep Time

Deep Time (YellowFever) are from Austin TX, a bewitching pop duo, comprised of Jennifer Moore on organ, electric guitar and vocal microphone, and Adam Jones on drums; who are as infectious and delightful as this time demands.

Moore, once the torchbearer for girl-group legends The Carrots is something altogether unusual in the modern age; a singer with those endangered qualities: personality, style, and an arresting delivery. Jones is the jazzy 'batterista,' as musical and dynamic a drummer as you will see on the scene today. Once upon a time, creatures such as these roamed the earth in the dozens; now they are as rare as the barely glimpsed yeti.

But it's not just their personality that recommends them, it's the tunes. Just listen to the new-wave polka-soul-serenading madness of Gold Rush, the toe-tapping Italo-mutation of Sgt Sierra, the easy-listening doom-incantation of Gilligan, every song on the record is a bon-a-fide catastrophe for the forces of predictability and boredom.

Nu Sensae has taken big risks with even bigger payoffs on this release!

Refusing to repeat themselves, however, Lukic and Pitout are proving just how unpredictable they can be, they abandoned their status as a duo, a favorite angle of both the media and fans, and recruited Vancouver noise rock great Brody McKnight as a full-time member. Previously working with the now-legendary group Mutators, McKnight has added another dimension of heaviness to the band's already mind-melting sludge attack.

They've also embraced diversity in other ways, allowing more loud-quiet dynamics into their songwriting. From the creeping dirge of "Tea Swamp Park" to the vast expanse of "Say What You Are," the quiet sections offer brief moments of uneasy solace between the full out attack of songs like "100 Shades," "Tyjna" and "Eat Your Mind."

Elsewhere, subtle but defined melodies surface amidst the fuzz of tracks like "Burnt Masks" and "Dust." Don't be mistaken, though: Sundowning is designed to bludgeon with the raw aggression that can only come from the best elements of noise, punk and grunge.

material for Charlotte Gainsbourg after penning the exquisite
Out Of Touch for the actress/singers 2012 mini-album,
Stage Whisper. Its another sign that Mockasin is going
places, but at his own pace - just as Caramel suggests the
process of melting and taking on a new shape, a new taste.
That is the true sound of Connan Mockasin.

"[Caramels] dreamy grooves sound like something Prince might
make, were he on strong prescription tranquilisers - in a good
    way, of course"
    - The Guardian

"Mockasins a more ambitious songwriter than his sleepy
    demeanor would sometimes suggest"
    - Pitchfork

    FFS

Collaborations don't work, or that's what FFS would have us believe on their debut
album. When the seminal Los Angeles duo Sparks and Glasgow-based quartet
Franz Ferdinand decided to record together, it was a flawed and potentially
disastrous idea, right? Wrong, as FFS is one of the strongest albums of either bands'
    career.

Produced by Grammy-award winning John Congleton (St Vincent, David Byrne)
at London's RAK Studios, the album FFS took 15 days to complete. 'Kimono My
House'-era Sparks fans will recognize how FFS highlights their classic pop rock DNA,
and Franz Ferdinand fans won't be dissapointed to hear the band at their peak of
their powers as they bring their exhilaratingly unique and witty modern rock sound
    to the collaboration.

Very much a new project, FFS doesn't truly sound like either band, but a striking and
fascinating mutation. "The real motivation was to make something new, not 'Franz
featuring Russell Mael', or 'Sparks with Franz Ferdinand backing them," says Alex
    Kapranos (of Franz Ferdinand).

"You can't chart what is Sparks and what is Franz Ferdinand," suggests Ron Mael (of
Sparks). "I think each band unconsciously relinquished a little of who they were in
    order to enter new territory."

So in the right hands, collaborations DO work, and beautifully. The strength of the
two bands is bigger than the sum of the parts.

    Agaetis Byrjun (Out Of Stock)

Reykjavík-based noise quartet Sigur Rós are the biggest band in their native Iceland, which should say much, much more about the collective insanity of that earthquake-ridden, blizzard-beaten crag of an island than anything to do with Sigur Rós's sound. But in their music, Sigur Rós reflect all the breathtaking glory of the Icelandic wastes--a fairy-tale explosion of unhinged elemental majesty that's finally crystallized here, their debut European release. Poised somewhere between the haunting soundscapes of Labradford and the lilting Celtic falsetto of Enya, Agaetis Byrjun is a truly breathtaking listen. Frontman Jon Por Birgisson sings in a language that Sigur Rós dub Hopelandic--an otherworldly mutation of Icelandic, sung in the falsetto cadence of angels; similarly, he plays his guitar with a violin bow, opening the floodgates for brilliant waves of feedback. And while it's the opening Svefn-G-Englar that's Sigur Rós' moment to date, there's far more that they have to offer; listen to the pomp and flourish of a full orchestra on Flugufrelsarinn, or the awe-inspiring near-religious mantra of Ny Batteri.

    Seer (Out Of Stock)

Received a 9.0 Best New Music rating from Pitchfork. The Seer took 30 years to make. It's the culmination of every previous Swans album as well as any other music I've ever made, been involved in, or imagined. But it's unfinished, like the songs themselves. It's one frame in a reel. The frames blur, blend and will eventually fade.

The songs began on an acoustic guitar, then were fleshed out with (invaluable) help from my friends, then were further tortured and seduced in rehearsals, live, and in the studio, and now they await further cannibalism and force-feeding as we prepare to perform some of them live, at which point they'll mutate further, endlessly, or perhaps be discarded for a while.

Despite what you might have heard or presumed, my quest is to spread light and joy through the world. My friends in Swans are all stellar men. Without them I'm a kitten, an infant. Our goal is the same: ecstasy! -Michael Gira
