    Let Go

Nada Surf is reissuing individual vinyl versions of their albums The Proximity Effect, Let Go and The Weight Is A Gift via Barsuk Records. The albums have been out of print on vinyl for many years, and the band wanted to make them available to fans who couldn't get their hands on the box-set.

Nada Surf's subtle and enchanting 2002 opus Let Go has a little something for everyone, with acoustic numbers Blizzard of '77, Fruit Fly and Neither Heaven nor Space, power pop cuts like Happy Kid and upbeat electric fare such as Hi-Speed Soul. Let Go proved that Nada Surf was for real and that they were a rightful heir of classic American rock.

    Lucky

Lucky, the title of Nada Surf's fifth album, is at once literal and ironic. Like the songs that singer-guitarist Matthew Caws, bassist Daniel Lorca and drummer Ira Elliot crafted for their previous two albums, let go (2003) and the weight is a gift (2005), lucky is filled with images of restlessness, longing and the elusiveness of love. Yet the band counterbalances the lyrical bittersweetness with a musical buoyancy. Intimate songs become in-it-together anthems, thanks to the chiming guitars, propulsive rhythms, and the emotional candor in Caws' vocals. A song like beautiful beat segues from a sparsely arranged, confessional first verse into a harmony-laden chorus and reaches multi-layered, canon-like proportions before the track fades out. If Caws is often suggesting that romance and resolution may still be an inch or two out of reach, he's also proffering immediate musical solace. Turn up the volume, hit the repeat button, and your troubles, for a blissful three minutes or so, will disappear.

    The Proximity Effect

The Proximity Effect is the 1998 sophomore release from the New York trio. The album features fourteen tracks of fresh-breath alterna-pop, driven with sterling hooks, resonating melodies, and heart-stopping choruses. Produced by Fred Maher.

    You Know Who You Are

Having recorded five albums in ten years and toured extensively in support of all of them, Nada Surf - singer/guitarist Matthew Caws, bassist Daniel Lorca, drummer Ira Elliot and guitarist Doug Gillard (now official fourth member, more on that later) - opted to follow 2012's cracking The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy with a brief but well-earned hiatus. So in January 2015, when Caws informed Nada Surf's vociferous Facebook following that a new record was just about done, the news was greeted with explosive enthusiasm.

The music was in the can, he announced, and all that remained was to finish up a few lyrics and sing a few vocals; something he planned to do on off-days off during an upcoming solo acoustic tour. Caws even included a photo of the recording set-up he was bringing in the car. "I was so eager to have an album done that I believed in it as it was," Caws recalls. "But the great thing about being 'finished' is that you can take a breath and evaluate, because the pressure to 'do it' is gone. The more I listened and thought about it, the more I realized that I might want to keep working. Also, I'd sent the tracks to my friend Josh, who runs Barsuk Records, the label we've been on since 2002, and he said 'It's great,' but followed that with a pregnant pause. I got the message. I didn't take that as a critique as much as a belief that I could do better. It was very freeing."

And lo and behold, what would have been another really good Nada Surf album (their seventh since getting signed to a major in the go-go 90's and scoring a worldwide alterna-hit with "Popular") became what could well be the most representative collection of the group's two-decade career, all while pushing towards whatever comes next. Captured in the album's 10 tracks is every beloved facet of the band, but You Know Who You Are also finds much on offer that stands apart from anything previously heard in the band's diverse catalog.

    Fuckin A

The Thermals were formed in May of 2002 in Portland, OR. This crack three-member outfit released their
debut album More Parts Per Million on Sub Pop after being brought to the label's attention by
Ben Gibbard of the Postal Service and Death Cab for Cutie. Their second album, Fuckin A was recorded
and mixed in all of four days at Avast Studios by Chris Walla, who shares Gibbard's Death Cab pedigree and has lent production duties to Hot Hot Heat, Nada Surf and many others. On this album the band retains their raw energy and charisma, while upping the fidelity ante significantly. In short, it is a perfect sophomore record.

    The Golden Spike (Discontinued)

After releasing two singles, the jaunty One of Two and new-no-wave classic Molten, the Yorkshire trio Sky Larkin released an EP, Swit Swoo featuring covers of songs by Travis Morrison, Patti Smith, Queens of the Stone Age and Jake Thackray in the spring of 2008. In May of the same year the band recorded their debut album in Seattle, WA. Following in the footsteps of long-time touring partners Los Campesinos!, the band chose to work with producer John Goodmanson (Sleater-Kinney, Death Cab For Cutie, Nada Surf) and the result is The Golden Spike. Doug Gillard is a guitarist's guitar player. Over the past two decades he's lent his considerable talents to a huge array of recordings, and has been an integral member of Guided By Voices, Nada Surf, Death Of Samantha, Richard Bunkner's band, Cobra Verde, and others. His technical prowess and creative, angular melodies have influenced a generation of indie rockers. Gillard sings and plays nearly every note on Parade On (with the exception of drums and occasional backing vocals), and, although the songs range from aggressive punky New Wave to melodic 70s influenced psych, this is assuredly a pop record that should appeal to fans of all his other outfits.

Juliana Hatfield is an American musician and singer songwriter from New England formerly of the indie rock bands Blake Babies, The Juliana Hatfield Three, Some Girls and the Lemonheads. She has also performed and recorded as one half of Minor Alps with Matthew Caws of Nada Surf and has performed with or made contributions to the Lemonheads, Belly, Giant Sand, Susanna Hoffs, Aimee Mann and Mary Lou Lord over the span of her career. Growing up in the Boston area, Hatfield acquired a love of rock music in the 1970s having been introduced to the Los Angeles punk band, "X." Hatfield transferred to the Berklee College of Music from Boston University, hoping to join a band. She formed the Blake Babies with Freda Love and John Strohm in 1986. She sang, played guitar, bass guitar and piano in the group. Blake Babies were signed to indie label, Mammoth Records, in North Carolina and received airplay on college radio during the early 1990s. Hatfield and Strohm shared songwriting duties and often sang together. The band toured the U.S. and Europe and made music videos. Hatfield received a degree in songwriting from Berklee during this period. The Blake Babies disbanded in 1991 but reunited briefly in 1999, performing shows that year and embarking on a US tour in 2001. They released the critically-acclaimed, "God Bless The Blake Babies," to coincide with the tour. Frequent collaborator, Evan Dando of the Lemonheads made a guest appearance on the album.

Following the immediate break-up of the Blake Babies back in 1991, Hatfield joined the Lemonheads to record their album, "It's A Shame About Ray," playing bass and providing back-up vocals. She played and sang with the band on and off between the years 1992-1993. Juliana released her first solo album, "Hey Babe," in 1992. The album was one of the highest selling independent albums of the year. She recruited a rhythm section consisting of former Moving Targets and Bullet LaVolta drummer Todd Phillips, and Thudpucker bassist Dean Fisher, becoming the Juliana Hatfield Three. The JH3 achieved arena-rock stardom with the release of 1993's "Become What You Are." Several songs from the album got regularly played on major US rock stations, with her song, "My Sister," becoming the biggest hit of her career. The song placed #1 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart and the video became a staple at MTV. The track "Spin the Bottle," was used in the soundtrack for the film "Reality Bites" in 1994 and Juliana made the cover of Spin magazine. In 1995 following the success of "Become What You Are," she released her follow up album, "Only Everything," in which she "turned up the volume and the distortion and had a lot of fun." The album, her first for Atlantic Records, spawned another alternative radio hit in "Universal Heartbeat." Before engaging on a tour for this record, Juliana released Phillips and hired Jason Sutter, Ed Slanker on guitar and Lisa Mednick on keyboards. Two weeks into the tour, she canceled remaining shows due to a bout with depression. She recently released two well received solo albums, "Pussycat" last year and "Juliana Hatfield Sings Olivia Newton-John" this year.

ROG will reissue her solo album "Only Everything," on vinyl since it debuted 23 years ago and make it available in the US for the first time with deluxe packaging.
