    Motherland

Motherland is the third solo album by Natalie Merchant, released in 2001. The album is musically eclectic, varying from Middle Eastern violin-reggae beat fusion This House Is on Fire to 10,000 Maniacs-sounding Tell Yourself. Folky Motherland precedes stylistically Merchant's next album, The House Carpenter's Daughter.

The album is dedicated to the victims of September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks upon the United States. However, the recording was finished two days before the event, so the songs are not influenced by it. The event has still affected people's interpretations of the lyrics. Additionally, the cover was changed at the last minute to accommodate the post-9/11 world. Her original concept for the photograph on the album cover was a picture of children in a field wearing oxygen masks. We shot these kids in upstate New York on Sept 10, she recalled. And then we were going to reshoot on the 11th. Of course we canceled the session. The day I brought the pictures into the city, there were articles on the run here for Cipro and gas masks. I was getting pressure, anyway, from the record label, friends even, that the image was too controversial. So finally I gave in. A photograph of a demure-looking Ms. Merchant was used instead.

Paradise is There: The New Tigerlily Recordings

Natalie Merchant's career began when, as a college student, she joined the seminal alternative rock band 10,000 Maniacs. Serving as lead vocalist, lyricist, and sometime pianist, Merchant released five critically acclaimed studio albums with the band, including the platinum-selling In My Tribe (1987), Blind Man's Zoo (1989), Our Time in Eden (1992), and MTV Unplugged (1993). Merchant left the group in 1993, after 12 years, to record her first solo album. Tigerlily (1995) was certified five-times platinum, and was followed by the platinum Ophelia (1998), Natalie Merchant Live (1999), and Motherland (2001).

In 2010, Merchant returned with a thematic double album entitled Leave Your Sleep, her debut for Nonesuch Records. A meditation on childhood and mothering, the anthology comprised 19th and 20th century American and British classic children's poetry by the likes of Robert Louis Stevenson, Christina Rossetti, Robert Graves, Edward Lear, and E.E. Cummings that Merchant had set to music. The result was praised by critics on both sides of the Atlantic, with The Wall Street Journal calling it an ideal fit between poetic and musical forms, and the Independent, a hugely ambitious and beautifully realized double album.

    In My Tribe

In My Tribe is an album by the American alternative rock band 10,000 Maniacs, originally released on Elektra Records in 1987. It was their second major-label album and their first to achieve large-scale success. John Lombardo, Natalie Merchant's songwriting partner on previous albums, left the band in 1986, prompting Merchant to begin collaborating with the other members of the band, most notably Rob Buck.

In My Tribe was ranked No. 65 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 100 greatest albums of the 1980s.

    Folk Songs

When Nonesuch Records celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2014, with festivals at London's Barbican Centre and New York's Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), Kronos Quartet joined forces with four labelmates-Sam Amidon, Olivia Chaney, Rhiannon Giddens, and Natalie Merchant-to perform a concert entitled Folk Songs. The group later recorded the songs, most of which are traditional with contemporary arrangements, with Doug Petty as the album's producer.

    We Walked In Song

The members of the innocence mission were still in high school when they met and started making music together. Through 18 years of recordings and tours, both of their own and with Natalie Merchant, Joni Mitchell, Emmylou Harris and 16 Horsepower, the band has gained legions of devoted listeners. And they have grown immeasurably as songwriters, singers and musicians. Their new album We Walked In Song is being hailed as one of their strongest works. With 11 new songs that are memorable and genuinely moving, the album continues the innocence mission's progression toward intimate recordings where each note played and sung seems essential.

    Mermaid Avenue Vol. III

When American folk legend Woody Guthrie died in 1967, at the age of 55, among his stored belongings were thousands of complete song lyrics for which he had not written out music or made recordings. Many of them had been written in the 1940s and '50s, in the Guthrie family home on Mermaid Avenue in Coney Island, Brooklyn. The lyrics remained in boxes for decades, but once his daughter Nora found them in the 1990s, she knew they had to be shared. She approached English singer-songwriter and activist Billy Bragg to select some to set to music. The Chicago rock band Wilco came aboard soon after, with Jeff Tweedy writing music-along with his late bandmate Jay Bennett on some songs-and the band recording with both Tweedy and Bragg on vocals. Natalie Merchant joined the group to sing a duet with Bragg and two solo songs, and guitarist/singer Corey Harris, who wrote two songs and co-wrote one, performed on many tracks.

In 1998, the first batch of songs was released to critical acclaim as Mermaid Avenue, receiving a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Folk Album. This second volume followed in 2000. This third volume, released in conjunction with Mermaid Avenue: The Complete Sessions.

    Mermaid Avenue Vol. II

ho knew that after the undeniable, sometimes shimmering, sometimes rustic magic of Mermaid Avenue that there was enough quality material for a second volume? By setting their own music to Woody Guthrie's lyrics, Billy Bragg and Wilco once again offer a 50-minute testament to Guthrie's long, dynamic shadow. This sophomore meeting is as balanced between the up-tempo and the down-tempo as was the first Mermaid. Jeff Tweedy's rasp gives all the Wilco-driven tunes a certain grit, and the songs Bragg takes on have a luminescent, frank earnestness that intensifies the delivery of Guthrie's lyrical social critiques. Hot Rod Hotel, with Bragg on the mic, melds the two approaches best, and Secret of the Sea is the CD's poppiest centerpiece--aptly aimed at radio airplay like the first Mermaid's California Stars. Natalie Merchant's playful I Was Born is brief but sweet, just as bluesman Corey Harris's Against the Law is an uplift, with his passionate vocal wail mirroring the political gist of Guthrie's words. The moody closers Black Wind Blowing and Someday, Some Morning, Sometime end Volume 2 with a pair of sweetly sad gems, one a Bragg-sung folk blues that mourns the loss of cotton crops in the American dustbowl era, the other a Tweedy-sung paean to lost love. At the dawn of a new millennium, with labor and the distribution of wealth as pressing historical issues that disrupt every International Monetary Fund and World Trade Organization soiree, the time is right for Woody. --Andrew Bartlett

Johanna Warren is a songwriter based Portland, Oregon. Her new album, nmn, will be released worldwide on Team Love Records May 19, 2015. In Johanna's words, "This album is dedicated to the moon: by honoring her phases, I am restoring balance to my body and making peace with the cycles of all natural things; and to the divine feminine: by collectively cultivating her, may we restore balance to our world. Although Warren has lent her vocal talents to artists like Natalie Merchant and Iron & Wine, she identifies primarily as a songwriter. An intuitively self-taught guitarist, she channels powerful songs in weird time signatures and melancholic open tunings, weaving adept finger-picking with acrobatic vocal lines and carefully crafted poetry, in reverence of her patron songwriting saints Elliott Smith, Joni Mitchell and Nick Drake. God has his plans, but I've got mine, and little good will come to those who stand in line" - Johanna Warren, Noise. Approaching music as a potent healing modality, Warren cultivates and honors the physically healing properties of sound and the spiritually healing powers of artistic expression. One cold winter evening in the waning weeks of 2014, Johanna and her touring partner Mitski (Double Double Whammy) passed through the Team Love gallery space in New Paltz, NY. Johanna invited the crowd to sit down on the gallery floor for her set. She requested the lights be dimmed as she lit a white candle and burned some sage. With only the candlelight to illuminate her face and separate her from the audience, she opened herself to a crowd that was swiftly transformed from unsure and vaguely uncomfortable to enraptured and mesmerized. These moments are the signature of Johanna's live performances, in which she consciously strives to provide listeners with a portal to an alternate realm in which healing can occur. Sound and light, scent, physical space, and the web of subtle energies created by a room full of human bodies are all elements of the universe that Johanna controls and shapes. She performs the same delicate manipulations within the world of nmn, an oceanic voyage from dark to light and back that is rich in sensual language, riveting self-reflective candor and surreal sonic landscapes (created entirely with acoustic instruments and found objects played by Johanna and her engineer Bella Blasko in an empty apartment unit). However, despite stepping into the role of High Priestess for the sake of creating art and facilitating group experiences, she warns us not to attach to any divisive illusions: You say I emanate some strange magnetic power, but don't be drawn to me-I may be here today, but soon black moss will cover over my dead body. Whether singing about her own mortality (Black Moss), updating the tedium of the party that Patti Smith first told us about (This Is Why) or daring one to imagine a world that transcends our notions of "the duality of wrong and right" (True Colors), Johanna Warren is a songwriter of daring vision. Her forthcoming album nmn flies into timeless space, focusing our gaze deep into the vastness of the heavens.

    Natalie Merchant Tigerlily On Numbered Limited-Edition 180g 45RPM 2LP

Half-Speed Mastered From The Original Master Tapes For Astounding Sonics And Detail

    Five-Times Platinum! 1995 Gem A Vocal Tour-De-Force

The 10,000 Maniacs were at their peak when group founder and scintillating vocalist Natalie Merchant announced that she was leaving the band to pursue a solo career. It took her four months to record Tigerlily, a gorgeously detailed folk-pop debut that became a permanent fixture on the album charts for a year after its 1995 release.

The five-times platinum set spawned three giant hits-"Wonder," "Carnival," and the haunting "Jealousy"-that simultaneously crossed over to the pop, adult-contemporary, and mainstream singles charts. It's easy to understand why. On Tigerlily, Merchant turns in a vocal performance for the ages, spinning majestic webs of mellow atmosphere woven with rhythmic textures and low-key movements. This is a mood masterpiece.

Remastered from the original analog tapes, Mobile Fidelity's collectable version of Tigerlily mines every last nuance and delicate tone from this intimate gem. Merchant's beautiful voice-her precious coos, soulful inflections, and whisper-soft purrs harken back to the Jazz Era-is presented with an up-close clarity and full-bodied richness that enhance the album's deeply emotional feel. She uses volume and pitch as a painter utilizes shades on a canvas. Subtle and tender, her phrasing and crescendos underscore the personal nature of the lyrics. Merchant sings about mature topics most songwriters lack the courage to explore, probing the painful loss of a longtime partner on "Beloved Wife," actor River Phoenix's tragic death on "River," and life-altering myths on "San Andreas Fault."

The vocalist's bracing conviction is matched by small-scale acoustic frameworks that don't let a note go to waste. And Mobile Fidelity's engineers worked to make sure you hear all of them. Aligned on a wide soundstage, the discerning mix of Hammond organs, pianos, chamber percussion, and bluesy guitars come across with their understated intentions intact. Balances are superb, dynamics are grand. There is no better way to experience and enjoy the rich sonic fabrics on this album. The results will leave you hypnotized.

    Temporary People (Out Of Stock)

Temporary People is the second LP by Joseph Arthur And The Lonely Astronauts, a NYC-based collective. Arthur, along with guitarists Kraig Jarret Johnson (The Jayhawks) and Jennifer Turner (Fur Slide, Natalie Merchant), drummer Greg Wieczorek (Twilight Singers) and bassist Sibyl Buck, descended upon the Catskill wilderness to conjure what Arthur testifies as a fully-realized, awesome explosion of rock and roll. The best and truest things are born out of necessity, Arthur explains. I hung onto the recording of this album like a man in the middle of the ocean would to a a piece of wood floating by, you can hear it in the songs and you can hear it in the band pulling together. This album is the sound of survival. The follow up to 2007's Let's Just Be, Temporary People finds the Astronauts steeped in rattling anthems (Faith, Temporary People), unearthly rock revivals (Dead Savior, Look into the Sky) and classic country inspired hymns (Say Goodbye, Turn You On).

Jo is one of those rare writer-performers where you get the sense, whatever your belief, that something greater is being channeled through his music and voice. Like Patti Smith, Grant Lee Phillips, Thom Yorke, he trances and the voice, the meaning, becomes bigger than him, bigger than a few pop chords or words strung together. It touches something very deep and universal. - Michael Stipe, R.E.M.
