    Natural Born Killers Soundtrack

Most soundtracks simply feature the film's incidental music or songs that were heard in the background throughout the movie. Not Natural Born Killers. Assembled by Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), the soundtrack to Oliver Stone's brutally warped serial killer saga recreates the hallucinatory feeling of the film. Continuing with its soundtrack reissue campaign UMe will be reissing this title back on standard weight vinyl for the first time in years.

    Natural Born Killers

Most soundtracks simply feature the film's incidental music or songs that were heard in the background throughout the movie. Not Natural Born Killers. Assembled by Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), the soundtrack to Oliver Stone's brutally warped serial killer saga recreates the hallucinatory feeling of the film. Snatches of dialogue interweave with song fragments and sound effects, creating a harrowing, violent soundscape where Leonard Cohen occasionally offers a relief of sorts. In fact, Reznor managed to convey the insanity of the movie's lead characters much more effectively than Stone did with the film itself.

    Born Under Saturn

Double Heavyweight LP Housed In Gatefold Jacket With Full Color Printed Inner-Sleeves

Ribbon Music is excited to announce the release of Django Django's sophomore album,
Born Under Saturn. This new collection of songs is the work of a confident and experienced
band pushing beyond their DIY roots; it expands on the slippery, indefinable nature of their selftitled
debut, applying all of its giddy art-rock imagination only across a much larger canvas.

Django Django - producer/drummer Dave Maclean, bassist Jim Dixon, guitarist Vinnie Neff and
keyboardist Tommy Grace - met at art school. They took their time evolving a unique openminded
sound in which every influence is welcome yet remains clutter free.

Like before, Django Django are oblivious to genre rules. You'll find Beach Boys harmonies and
Link Wray riffs crisscrossing with house music pianos, classical keyboard flourishes with Jamaican
and African rhythms, and all of it flows. Truly, Born Under Saturn finds magic in the unexplored
    spaces between genres.

Underneath it all lies an undeniable knack for a hook, but as pop music this collection of songs
is keenly intelligent. Tracks like the radio-friendly 'Shake & Tremble' ripple muscular guitar riffs
before dissolving into harmonic choral bliss. Standout, 'Reflections,' builds pulsing piano house
before surprising with a knockout clarinet solo - something you won't hear on any other rock
record this year! The album fascinates with ambition, and pulls it off with pop aplomb.

Popquiz: What do Leonard Cohen's The Future (1992) and nouveau-violence movie Natural Born Killers (Oliver Stone, 1994) have in common? Answer: the latter used no less than three tracks from Cohen's The Future in its soundtrack. Whereas the movie is pretty cynical and sinister, The Future is a record of perseverance, reformation and hope in the face of grim prospects. Its lyrics are pretty dark though, with references to actual events regarding social unrest in the U.S at the time. Following release of The Future, Cohen toured the Western world and found new success with younger audiences. This in-demand record deserves all 180 grams it's pressed on!

Murder Was The Case Soundtrack (Explicit)

he soundtrack to an 18-minute film inspired by Snoop Doggy Dogg's Murder Was the Case provides more thrills than the average hip-hop release. Again, Dre relies on his standard production tricks and crew, introducing a couple of new members to the mix. But the result sounds anything but stale -- it ranks alongside The Chronic, Doggystyle and Above the Rim in terms of quality. In fact, various-artist compilations like Murder Was the Case are the ideal vehicle for Dr. Dre -- they show his versatility. Murder has the harrowing title track from Snoop Dogg, as well as the smooth funk of Warren G and the chilling hardcore of Natural Born Killaz, the first track from Dre's collaboration with Ice Cube. At some point, Dre will need to find some new tricks, but Murder Was the Case finds him at the top of his game.

    Shallow Grave

The Tallest Man on Earth released one of 2008's most powerful records, one that Pitchfork praised, calling Kristian Matsson a natural-born folksinger, earnest, clever, and comforting. Shallow Grave could not have been more simple, just Matsson's commanding vocals with an acoustic guitar or banjo, recorded at his home in Dalarna, Sweden. Although the album was released on the Swedish label Gravitation without the help of widespread distribution, the story of The Tallest Man on Earth spread far and wide through word of mouth.

Get busy living or get busy dying

1994 proved to be an amazing good year for movie theaters, as these classic films saw the light of day; Pulp Fiction, Lion King, Forrest Gump, Natural Born Killers and The Shawshank Redemption.

The Shawshank Redemption tells the story of Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins), a banker who is sentenced to life in Shawshank State Penitentiary for the murder of his wife and her lover, despite his claims of innocence. During his time at the prison, he befriends a fellow inmate, Ellis Boyd Red Redding (Morgan Freeman), and finds himself protected by the guards after the warden begins using him in his money-laundering operation.

The film received multiple award nominations (including seven Oscar nominations) and highly positive reviews from critics for its acting, story, and realism. It is considered to be one of the greatest films of the 90s. Readers of Empire magazine voted the film as the best film of the 90s, and it placed number 4 on Empire's list of The 500 Greatest Movies of All Time in 2008. In March 2011, the film was voted by BBC Radio 1 listeners as their favorite film of all time. The Shawshank Redemption is the highest-rated movie on IMDB with an average star count of 9.3, closely followed by The Godfather.

The Shawshank Redemption score was composed by multiple (Grammy) award winner Thomas Newman. The score was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Score in 1994, which was Newman's first Oscar nomination.

A central scene in the film features the soprano Letter Duet (Canzonetta sull'aria) from Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro, which is included on the soundtrack. Original songs by Hank Williams and The Inkspots are included as well.

Certified Multi-Platinum (2 times) by the RIAA. (3/01)

If ever a group of musicians had a clear vision of where they wanted to go and how to get there, it was these southern California boys who built a steady rolling FM hit factory on basic tenets of Gram Parsons's invention of country-rock. For their second album, the group decided concept was most important and set out to portray themselves as keepers of the old West--their outlaw image a natural for those born unto rock and roll soil. The hits are lazy, decadent, and unrepentant; Tequila Sunrise and the title track, feature the flawless harmonies and strong vocals of Glenn Frey and Don Henley. --Rob O'Connor

Co-produced by Evans & Mark Bright (Carrie Underwood & Rascal Flatts), Words is the first full studio album release from Sara Evans in over 3 years. Lead by the first single "Marquee Sign," the album is comprised of 13 new original songs along with an acoustic version of her #1 single "A Little Bit Stronger."

"When I'm listening to a song, it's the lyrics and the stories they tell that matter most to me," Sara said. "Not only is 'Words' the title to one of the songs on my album but in listening to new music for the record, I was always looking for lyrics that moved me and expressed a powerful range of emotions. Women are natural storytellers and I'm proud to have so many amazing female songwriters represented on this record."

Words marks a creative reunion for Evans, pairing her with frequent co-producer Mark Bright (2005's Real Fine Place, 2014's Slow Me Down) while Tracy Gershon provides A&R direction. Her daughter Olivia even contributes background vocals to the record.

1979 Soundtrack Contains Multiple Smash Hits: When a Man Loves a Woman, Stay With Me Among Them

Midler Steps Into Persona of Janis Joplin on Record Steeped in Rock n Roll, Pounding R&B, and Memphis Blues

Contagious Sound That Spotlights Midlers Potent Voice: LP Mastered on Mobile Fidelitys World-Renowned Mastering System and Pressed at RTI

Bette Midlers first leading role in a musical remains her best. As the soundtrack for that film, The Rose spotlights The Divine Miss Ms outstanding performance as a character in the persona of Janis Joplin. Midler received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress, and while the record contains no visuals, it punctuates the raw emotion and show-stopping persuasion that the singer brings to upbeat, rollicking fare composed in tribute to the late Joplin. Her reading of When A Man Loves a Woman remains definitive and unique for being sung from a females perspective.

Mastered on Mobile Fidelitys world-renowned mastering system and pressed at RTI, this Silver Label LP allows listeners to hone in on Midlers voice like never before. Kernels of previously unheard tonalities, richer hues of her bluesy timbre, and better-defined contours of her phrasing come to foreas do the contributions of guitarist Steve Hunter and drummer Whitey Glan, both members of Lou Reeds Rock n Roll Animal tour. No, The Rose isnt your conventional adult-contemporary pop offering from Midler. Its much more.

Always a natural-born theatrical star, Midler demonstrates these abilities to wondrous effect throughout, pouring herself into the painful sentiments of Stay With Me and raising hell on raucous numbers such as Sold My Soul to Rock N Roll and Keep On Rockin. Muscle Shoals sounds and Memphis-birthed shuffles keep Midler balanced and engaged. Producer Paul Rothchild, who helmed Joplins final salvo, matches the headliners zest by keeping tight-fisted control over the material selection and sonics. Never does Midler seem as if shes merely paying tribute or playing a part; she makes listeners feel every note.

Its apt, then, that shes afforded carte blanche on the title track, a gorgeous and career-defining moment of immense proportions and the only song here not performed in the persona of Joplin. Theres no better way to wrap up an album of nearly shamanic power, and an effort that, along with The Divine Miss M, remains Midlers peak.

    Spreading Rumours

Spreading Rumors is Grouplove's second full-length album.

Hannah Hooper met Christian Zucconi late one evening on the lower east side of Manhattan. They had both been living in New York for years and had never crossed paths before. But from that night forward the two could hardly be pulled apart. Soon after their connection Hooper was invited to an art residency in Greece on the island of Crete and Hooper insists without any hesitation she invited Zucconi to join her on this journey. Seriously, we had only known one another for a few days but are both so inspired and alive when we are together that going to Greece seemed like a magical and natural thing to do recalls Zucconi.

On Crete, in a small remote mountain village, Hooper and Zucconi met the members of their future band Grouplove a year before it was officially formed. Sean Gadd, a natural songwriter and guitar player, born and bred in London instantly bonded with the two eccentric New Yorkers. Their relationship became apparent through the music they were making day in and day out. Andrew Wessen, a pro surfer and musician from Los Angeles and his childhood friend Ryan Rabin, an accomplished drummer and producer, were also at the residency and quickly joined in with the musical trio. These five musicians make up the members of what we now know as Grouplove.

Like all good things, the summer and the residency came to an end and the five friends scattered back to their homes all over the globe. With Sean in London, Christian and Hannah in Brooklyn and Ryan and Andrew in Los Angeles Grouplove was faced with the challenge of what to do now. We all understood how rare it is for five strangers to feel as close as family and create passionate music together. We couldn't just return to Brooklyn and let the music we all made fade into a memory of that summer we had in Greece, explains Zucconi. Everyone pulled their funds together and Sean, Christian and Hannah made their way to Ryan Rabin's studio in LA to record their album. We seriously had the best time of our lives doing that record, says Zucconi. And the result is an incredibly special album where soaring harmonies coupled with sweeping anthems lead you through their powerful journey. Like the members of Grouplove, their music is diverse in influence and style but bonded together by an undeniably creative kinship.

Their experience back together and recording together was so potent that Hooper and Zucconi packed up their lives in Brooklyn and moved to LA to live and play their music.

We never could have dreamt this up says Zucconi, but at the same time we're not at all surprised - GROUPLOVE is meant to be. Our story a testament to fate, and our music is something we are ready to share.

    Strong Feelings

With the kind of understatement that's typical of the man, Doug Paisley describes his wondrous new album
Strong Feelings as, "just 10 new songs. It's a lot less simple and unadorned than other recordings I've made,
but it's just as earnest and straightforward." This is all in keeping with the Toronto songwriter's low-key
approach to his art, preferring to let his songs speak for themselves. A fact borne out by the nature of the
effusive praise given to Paisley's last effort, 2010's Constant Companion.

Strong Feelings expands on that albums preoccupations, but this time Paisley has also opened up the sound
    - tunes like "A Song My Love Can Sing" and "It's Not Too Late (To Say Goodbye)" find Paisley crooning like a
seasoned country veteran, his voice crumpled with the same weary heartache as Don Williams or Hoyt Axton
in their prime. The steady tick of "Our Love", meanwhile, with its folksy grain and unfussy guitar, already feels
like a classic Nashville ballad. The rockist "To And Fro" conjures visions of the open prairies, all golden skies
and roving antelopes, essayed by warm electric guitar and a sort-of-boogie chug, while "Growing Souls" could
be Dylan kicking back with The Band on an old spiritual in Big Pink's basement.

Strong Feelings is an album that tries to articulate the speech of the heart in universal terms. One of its key
tunes, "Radio Girl", can even be taken as a microcosm of Paisley's overarching theme. "It draws on some of
the things people derive from their relationships with music and with musicians: longing, comfort, intensity,
importance," he expounds. "I try to always be working in service to the songs I've written.

    Carney (200 Gram Vinyl)

Hit Maker And Musician's Musician Struck Chart Gold With 1972 Album Carney

Analogue Productions Reissue On 200-Gram Vinyl

Mastered By Kevin Gray At Cohearent Audio From The Original Master Tapes

Plated And Pressed At Quality Record Pressings

Heavyweight Tip-On Old-Style Jacket From Stoughton Printing

With his trademark top hat, hair well past his shoulders, a long, lush beard, an Oklahoma drawl and his fingers splashing two-fisted barrelhouse piano chords, future Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Leon Russell cut a flamboyant figure in the early 1970s. He recorded his first hit single Tight Rope with the release of his third, and most successful album Carney, in 1972, which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 200.

Two years earlier Russell had already played on hundreds of songs as one of the top studio musicians in Los Angeles. The Oklahoma-born pianist, guitarist, songwriter and bandleader led Joe Cocker's band Mad Dogs & Englishmen, appeared at George Harrison's 1971 Concert for Bangladesh in New York City and composed numerous hits of his own. He was in Phil Spector's Wall of Sound Orchestra and played sessions for Frank Sinatra, Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin, the Ventures and the Monkees, among many others.

But it was the top-rated Carney, reissued here on an audibly exquisite 200-gram LP from Analogue Productions, that put Carney into the league of extraordinary musicians. Soulful roots-rock yields to dizzying psychedelia on this, Russell's most famous album. His all-time biggest hit, Tight Rope, leads to Out in the Woods, Cajun Love Song, This Masquerade, and more! No link in the reissue chain was sacrificed, making this outstanding reissue a true audiophile masterpiece. Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio remastered the album from the original master tapes; plating and pressing took place at Quality Record Pressings, makers of the world's finest-sounding LPs. Lastly, as benefits a stellar reissue, we packaged our version in a heavyweight old-style tip-on jacket from Stoughton Printing.

Russell wrote scores of hits for others, among them Superstar, (written with Bonnie Bramlett) for the Carpenters, Delta Lady for Joe Cocker and This Masquerade, for George Benson. His own version of This Masquerade is featured on Carney. More than 100 acts recorded A Song for You, which Russell said he wrote in 10 minutes. Ray Charles' recording of the song in 1993 received a Grammy Award.

Sadly, Russell's life as a musical muse and performer ended with his death at 74 on Nov. 13, 2016, at his home in Nashville. He will be forever remembered for making a broad, sophisticated palette of American music sound down-home and natural.

    Lost In Transition

Originally born out of lazy days that Chuck (singer of the Mad Caddies) and Todd (original drummer for the Mad Caddies) spent jamming together for fun, Ellwood organically matured into a full-fledged band with the addition of friends Dustin (Cherry Poppin' Daddies) on keys and Graham on bass.

The result of this collaboration is Lost In Transition, a nine song album that could aptly be described as a soundtrack to the long, slow, carefree days of the California summer. The synergy amongst the band members is palpable, as each track flows with a natural effortless and seamless harmony.

Lost In Transition takes the most flavorful bits of the Mad Caddies often frenetic sound and hones them into a fluid brand of reggae that immediately entrances the listener. It's a refreshingly honest album with no agenda other than to be exactly what it is: the product of four friends/musicians riding a groove and imparting their own unique perspective on the reggae/ska genre.

    Cass County

Inspired by the country music that soundtracked Henley's early days in east Texas, Cass County finds him harmonizing with Miranda Lambert, trading verses with Martina McBride and duetting with Merle Haggard.

I'm associated with California a lot because of that other band that I play in, but I really and truly was born and raised in Cass County, Texas, Henley said last month during a private listening party in Nashville. I'm a Southerner and a Texan. I have ancestors in Tennessee, Mississippi and Georgia. So this is a natural progression for me. It's not me trying to do the 'Don Henley country album.' It's who I am and where I come from.

    The Happiest Lamb

Since arriving in Los Angeles, Audra Mae has landed a publishing deal with Warner Chappell, a TV placement singing Bob Dylan's Forever Young on the FX series Sons of Anarchy, a record deal with SideOneDummy Records, and in late 2009, co-wrote Who I Was Born to Be, the only original track on Susan Boyle s chart-topping, 9 million-selling I Dreamed a Dream album. It has turned out to be a dream come true for the 25-year-old singer-songwriter from Oklahoma.

Growing up, show business was in Audra Mae's blood. She is the great grand niece of the late Judy Garland and her grandmother turned her on to country and folk artists like Patsy Cline, Dolly Parton and Woody Guthrie, while her grandfather introduced her to jazz.

Audra Mae is a natural without a doubt. The Happiest Lamb, produced by Ted Hutt (The Gaslight Anthem, Lucero) spotlights Mae's incredible voice and her songs are timeless affairs augmented with minimal accompaniment, including acoustic guitar, piano, mandolin and sometimes mournful accordions.

    Pete Yorn

With ten years and five studio albums under his belt, Pete Yorn is a stalwart in the singer/songwriter world. Originally receiving acclaim for his work scoring a Farrelly Brothers film (Me, Myself and Irene), Yorn quickly began garnering much deserved attention for his efforts as a songwriter outside of his work on film. Having tasted success, Yorn released his first full-length, musicforthemorningafter in 2001, which went gold and had Rolling Stone hailing him one of Ten To Watch in 2001.

Fast forward through nearly a decade and multiple musical ventures to 2010 to find Pete Yorn releasing his sixth studio album on Vagrant Records. The 11-song collection was produced by Frank Black (The Pixies) and is comprised of raw tracks, born of shattered nerves and shifting dreams yet edged with hope.

Recorded on the spur-of-the-moment in the summer of 2008, Yorns forthcoming album is a self-titled piece with a plain black cover. While in the midst of tracking Back & Forth, Yorn received an email from Frank Black suggesting they record some songs. After hopping a plane to Salem, OR, Black and Yorn set up an impromptu studio where they created the album in a mere five days. The result is Yorns most introspective work to date, as the self-titled album explores relationships, ambivalence and our natural fear of the future and unknown.

    The Sound Of Everything

Born out of late-night graveyard experimentation, Seattle's Thousands is comprised of guitarists/vocalists Kristian Garrard and Luke Bergman. The Sound of Everything, the duo's stark and original spin on modern folk music is one of the most gentle and serene recordings you're likely to ever hear. The band's debut album is solely voices, guitars, and an array of environmental sounds such as birds, leaves, wind, intentionally recorded along with the songs and untouched.

Each recorded live in one take, the songs on the album provide a musical snapshot of a moment in time, a picture postcard of the world as it was where and when Garrard and Bergman recorded each of these 11 songs. The two drove tirelessly across the Pacific Northwest searching for recording locations, settling on an abandoned silo, a barn and a riverbank as the perfect natural studios. Originally brought to the attention of Bella Union by Fleet Foxes' Sky Skjelset, Thousands have managed to fit the sound of everything cozily in between two headphones.

Queen Of The Flat Top Guitar

This is a collection of impossibly rare recordings from legendary finger-picker Lena Hughes. A musical amateur that best exemplified true artistry, Lena Hughes was born in Grape Grove Township, Missouri, in 1904. Though she never recorded any 78s and only one LP, Hughes was most influential through her steady performances at various fiddler conventions and folk festivals throughout the Ozarks. She was an excellent fiddler, banjoist and guitar picker who retained the largely extinct repertoire of parlor pieces and the variety of specialized tunings that were necessary to play them.

Lena Hughes' repertoire can be devided roughly in half: finger-picked numbers adapted from fiddle tunes and recast parlor guitar pieces gleaned from popular sentimental songs, hymns and 19th century airs. As a faithful attendee at folk festivals, Hughes was accompanied by her guitar-playing husband, Jake. Her most mesmerizing performances, such as Pearly Dew, Spanish Fandango and Kentucky Moon Waltz depend heavily upon resonance of the open chord as it relates to the picking of the melodic line, primarily on one string. This ethereal harmonic technique, which seems so natural in Hughes' playing, is the holy grail for most finger-picking guitarists. Her lack of pretense and her mastery of this repertoire are what define her legendary status.

    The Last Laugh

The Last Laugh is the debut album from U.K. based Joker's Daughter, featuring vocalist, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Helena Costas. This fresh folk-pop excursion reveals new facets of the renowned artist and producer Danger Mouse, who collaborates with Costas throughout.

Born in London to Greek Cypriot parents, Helena learned violin from ages 7 to 13. Later, she taught herself guitar and keyboards. All the while, she developed a unique inner language and logic, rich with unconscious resonance, mythic allusions and complex food analogies. She wrote songs incessantly, and learned the art of production, using the studio as an instrument. Meanwhile, she developed her confidence by playing constant gigs around London, where she faced demanding audiences and learned to improvise.

In 2003, she began mailing her home recordings to the esteemed artist and producer Danger Mouse. As his international fame grew, the pair kept in touch. They discovered a natural affinity and decided to collaborate, naming their project Joker's Daughter after one of Helena's many porous artistic personae. Helena describes Joker's Daughter as a dualistic character who draws from the serious to turn it into humor.

Helena's striking melodies and rich, sensory lyrics reveal the depth, passion and prankishness in her psyche. Danger Mouse collaborates fully at every stage, contributing his farsighted skills as a songwriter, producer and musician. The result is an intoxicating, disorienting blend of folk music from some strange, timeless, uncharted dream world. The project also features the horns of Neutral Milk Hotel's Scott Spillane and the string arrangements of frequent Danger Mouse collaborator Daniele Luppi.

    Woven Music

Categories cannot contain Shinji Masuko. Hes the founder of DMBQ, one of Japans greatest modern psychedelic bands, a respected music and comic reviewer, an astonishing guitarist and a master guitar builder. Hes also been a member of the Boredoms since 2004, having designed and built their notorious seven neck guitar (the Sevena) while acting as the bands principle guitarist.

The idea for Woven Music, Masukos first solo work, was born during preparations for a series of Boredoms concerts in 2009 when Shinji played Kid Millions (of Oneida and Brah Records) some backing tracks hed created for the Boredoms current concert piece, Boadrum. For a short section of the live performance an incredible mass of multi-tracked droning guitars is mixed into the pounding chaos of the 9 person, multi-drummer ensemble. Shiji played Kid Millions this unadorned recording while they were between rehearsals at Shinjis home in Osaka and Kid was astounded, convinced that this music needed to be heard on its own.

Masuko thus inspired, spent the next year carefully crafting these pieces into stand alone works. Woven Music for Blue Steppe is a mass of mostly acoustic instruments while Woven Music for Silver Ocean explores the sound of a throng of electric guitars.

In the last twenty-plus years Masuko has created an astounding body of work with DMBQ and the Boredoms, but hes never released music of such singular beauty and depth. These are meditative, swirling pieces which suggest the resonances of their titles: grand and eternal natural vistas. These are immersive works and completely singular in their scope, Brah is proud to present these unheard compositions to a broader audience.

    Trouble Maker

Rancid as a band has always been imbued with a sense of place: the blue collar neighborhoods where they grew up in Berkley, California, their place as individuals within their band, their band as part of a movement and their evolving sense of place in relation to the world at large. This year Tim Armstrong (vocals, guitar), Matt Freeman (bass, vocals), Lars Frederiksen (vocals, guitar), and Branden Steineckert (drums) return with their ninth studio album Trouble Maker.

Born in the midst of the post-Reagan economic downturn in the San Francisco Bay Area, the East Bay region specifically, Rancid came to light as Armstrong and Freeman were moving forward after the first band they founded, Operation Ivy, reached a friendly demise. As Rancid, the band took up the torch of social commentary and the examination of the local scene and instantly inflamed the newly revived punk community, setting the stage for what was to come. After having seen the American dream dwindle and fade within their country, community, and homes, Rancid put their description of its aftermath into their songs. Each album served as a layer cementing Rancid's natural place in punk. Their lyrical themes established their identity in the punk rock world while musically they incorporated horns, rockabilly bass lines, reggae rhythms, rasp, and distortion. Balancing their personal tales of love, loss, and heartbreak with attitude, Rancid gave their listeners a community.

Over the past 2 decades, Rancid has shown awareness of their changing environment and have established their place in it, all while never losing sight of themselves as individuals or as a band.

Liszt - Hungarian Rhapsodies / Enesco - Romanian Rhapsodies (Speakers Corner)

Born in 1881, George Enescu led the life of a globetrotter. Although he became acquainted with all manner of schools and styles during his thorough studies in Vienna and Paris, it was invariably folk music that provided him with the most important source of inspiration. Thanks to their freshness and impressive thematic invention, the two Roumanian Rhapsodies have remained firm favourites to this day. Nothing in the music appears to demand great effort or mental struggle. The colourful mixture of lyrical and spirited passages seems completely natural and homogeneous, offering sheer delight for the ears right up to the final chord.

Enescus carefree hits serve as an ideal introduction to two orchestral heavyweights by Franz Liszt, which undoubtedly are to be counted as 'state of the art' works in this particular genre. Antal Dorati conducts the London Symphony Orchestra with a firm hand and complete concentration as is demanded by this tightly knit score , always managing to find the perfect balance between timbral force and transparency. Of course one can find elsewhere these compositions being performed faster, louder and with questionable sensational effects. But if you are looking for a faithful interpretation of the score, musicality and natural sound, then this is the recording for you.

Recording: June 1960 at Wembley Town Hall, London, by C.R. Fine and Robert Eberenz

    Production: Wilma Cozart

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.
