" a spacey, smoldering update on '90s R&B, and a voice that's high and fluttery and commanding "
"NAO is one of those artists that is pushing forth an exciting new era of R&B and soul."
NAO's debut album For All We Know will be released via RCA Records and is set to be one of the defining records of 2016.
Her emergence as one of the most adored new singers of the year has been as fluid and elegant as one of her vocal phrases. Now she has delivered her highly anticipated debut For All We Know, a transcendent set of 18 songs. Woozy, spacey funk, shot through with her effortless breath-taking toplines, part neo-soul, part UK bass, part funk rock - all at a sensual, stepping R&B pace.
The record features fan favorites "Girlfriend," "Inhale Exhale," "Bad Blood" and "Fool To Love" as well as incredible unheard tracks like "Trophy" - where NAO collaborates with A.K. Paul again - and "Get To Know Ya" co-produced by XL Recordings' Jungle. Other co-producers (NAO is credited as producer on 17 of the 18 tracks) include her good friends John Calvert ("In The Morning," "Blue Wine," "We Don't Give A"), GRADES ("Bad Blood," "Fool To Love," "Inhale Exhale," "Girlfriend") and LOXE ("Adore You," "Give Me A Little").
NAO grew up in South Woodford, East London, listening to gospel in her local Evangelical church, her brother's jungle UK garage and her sister's '90s and '00s R&B - going on to study at the prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She starting writing songs in her mid-twenties after a few years of teaching school kids to sing and doing backing vocal gigs for the likes of Pulp and Kwabs.
Inspired by Little Dragon, the ideas and words flowed, and she soon began working on her own songs, resulting in her 2014 debut EP, So Good. The EP's title track, made with A.K. Paul, whizzed around the world accumulating millions of plays on Soundcloud. NAO's 2015 follow-up EP, February 15, contained the single "Zillionaire" which was featured in a Samsung Galaxy commercial. By January 2016 she placed third in the high-profile BBC Sound Poll and her incredible year continues with a recent performance on Later with Jools Holland, the cover of The Guardian and rave reviews from Fader, Essence, Pitchfork, Entertainment Weekly, and more.
For All We Know is the record of a one-of-a-kind artist destined for greatness. A record you can dip your head into for a 360-degree spectrum of kaleidoscopic digi-funk.LP 1

I Want YouThe thirteenth studio album by American soul musician Marvin Gaye, released March 16, 1976, on Motown-subsidiary label Tamla Records. Recording sessions for the album took place throughout 1975 and 1976 at Motown Recording Studios, also known as Hitsville West, and Gaye's personal studio Marvin's Room in Los Angeles, California. The album has often been noted by critics for producer Leon Ware's exotic, low-key production and the erotic, sexual themes in his and Gaye's songwriting. The album's cover artwork adapts neo-mannerist artist Ernie Barnes's famous painting The Sugar Shack (1971). I Want You consisted of Marvin Gaye's first recorded studio material since his highly successful and well-received album Let's Get It On (1973). While it marked a change in musical direction for Gaye, departing from his trademark Motown and doo-wop-influenced sound for funky, light-disco soul, the album maintained and expanded on his previous work's sexual themes. I Want You has earned retrospective recognition from writers and music critics as one of Gaye's most controversial works and influential to such musical styles as disco, quiet storm, R&B, and neo soul.1. Mama's Gun is the second studio album by Neo Soul singer Erykah Badu, released in 2000. Recorded at Electric Lady Studios in New York City, the album incorporates Funk, Soul and Jazz styles. Covering themes of insecurity, social issues and personal relationships, Badu delivered a highly intimate and personal album that reached Platinum two months after its release. Mama's Gun features substantial contributions from several members of the Soulquarians outfit, of which Badu was a member. It also features guests such as soul singer Betty Wright and trumpeter Roy Hargrove.
The album contains the single Bag Lady which, with its colorful, artsy music video, shot to #1 on the R&B charts, and also into the Top 10 on the billboard charts. Bag Lady was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and for Best R&B Song. Also the song Didn't Cha Know? was nominated for Best R&B Song.
Rolling Stone magazine applauded her for taking chances the way Stevie Wonder or Nina Simone did in their prime and went on to say she has taken her art to the next level. Entertainment Weekly called the album a '70s soul homage featuring live musicians and a smooth-funk sound that wouldn't be out of place on a CTI record.LP1

The Miseducation Of Lauryn HillRanked 312/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill' is the critically and commercially acclaimed solo album by female Fugee Lauryn Hill. Originally released on August 25th, 1998, it has been widely praised for its seamless fusion of R&B, Hip Hop, Reggae, Gospel, and Neo-Soul. The songs vary in style, but make for a cohesive album. In 1999, the album garnered 10 Grammy nominations at the 41st Grammy Awards. When Hill won 5 Grammies that night, her achievement made her the first female to receive that many in one night. The album includes collaborations with soul singer D'Angelo on Nothing Even Matters; guitarist Carlos Santana on To Zion; singer Mary J. Blige on I Used to Love Him and well as then little-known John Legend playing the piano on Everything is Everything.

Everything's BeautifulEverything's Beautiful brings Miles Davis' sound into the 21st century, blending a diverse group of master takes and outtakes from across Miles' incredible tenure with Columbia Records (1955-1985) with original reinterpretations. Robert Glasper produced the collaboration. I didn't want to do just a remix record, Glasper noted when discussing the 11-song set. My idea was to show how Miles inspired people to make new art.
Knowing that Miles didn't have one audience, Glasper recruited a legion of diverse guest artists to add to the magic of the project including familiar collaborators like R&B musicians Erykah Badu, Ledisi, Bilal and KING. They are joined by British soul singer-songwriter Laura Mvula; hip-hop producer Rashad Smith; Grammy-nominated Australian neo-soul quartet Hiatus Kaiyote, rapper/producer Illa J; jazz guitarist John Scofield, who collaborated with Davis; and the legendary Stevie Wonder.1. ''For all intents and purposes, this album is the black version of [The Beach Boys'] Smile-- at best, it will go down in the Smile/There's a Riot Goin' On/Miles Davis' On the Corner category.'' - Questlove
The prodigal son of the soul and funk canon, D'Angelo, is back! His ever-awaited third studio album, Black Messiah, is his first album since the critically acclaimed Voodoo, bringing to an end a 14-year hiatus. The album blends 70's jazz-funk and neo-soul.
Anyone who's been keeping up should be keen to the fact that the long-lusted over project was recorded in full analog, so the liner notes' PSA "For best results, listen at maximum volume" should be taken as a direct order for fervent D'lievers. And what better way to experience the gritty greatness of the release than a heavy-bodied vinyl pressing for the audio junkies?
The album features tracks co-penned by Kendra Foster (Parliament/Funkadelic) and Q-Tip (A Tribe Called Quest). It's also co-produced by Questlove (The Roots), bassist Pino Palladino (John Mayer Trio, The RH Factor), and drummer James Gadson (Bill Withers, Temptations, Beck, Jamie Lidell).

There's something about Cole Williams's voice that conjures pictures in the mind.
Not only through the intense and compelling vocals of his recordings, either.
There's a catch to it, a rugged rasp weathered beyond his years, that shows that his
singing style - rich in the cadences of funk, blues and soul. Spend any time with
them, and it's abundantly clear that Cole - or if you prefer, The Child Of Lov - is a
true modern soul man.
This much we know: Cole has lived in London, Paris and Amsterdam where he's
currently based. He has, for various reasons, spent a good deal of time alone with
music. His first inspirations were his mother's Stevie Wonder albums. By the age
of 13 he was listening to hip hop and neo-soul, and began to try and make his own
beats on his computer, and initially to rap. At 14, he began to teach himself guitar
and piano, and became obsessed with the off-kilter hip hop beats of J Dilla and
especially Madlib, the master of the thickly-layered psychedelic groove. Inspired
by the combination of unorthodox musicality with hip hop attitude, as he picked
out his own melodies and slowly developed his instrumental skills; it all came
So here we are: from those years' worth of self-disciplined musical study and
practice recordings, then a period of adjusting to their exposure to the world, have
come the tracks that became The Child Of Lov album. They're layered with all
the intensity and dedication that Cole has put into his listening and learning, and
with his passion for the influences. Check out "Give Me" - the peculiar stutter of
his abstract hip hop heroes Madlib and Dilla is there, but so is his first inspiration
Stevie Wonder as well as brilliantly discordant hints of Prince and even Tom Waits
in full junkyard prophet mode. Listen to the powerfully defiant "Fly" and wonder
that the powerful, gospel-infused voice is that of a young man, and not a soul
veteran beaten but unbowed by life's tribulations and soak up the mournful opener

Like Water For ChocolateCommon spent the '90s carrying the Native Tongues torch through an era dominated by gangsta rap, earning a sizable underground following. Positive-minded alternative rap came back into vogue by the new millennium, and Common managed to land with major label MCA for 2000's Like Water for Chocolate. The album established him as a leading figure of alternative rap's second generation, not just because of the best promotion he'd ever had, but also because it was his great musical leap forward, building on the strides of One Day It'll All Make Sense. There's production work by the Roots' ?uestlove, neo-soul auteur D'Angelo, the Soulquarians, and DJ Premier. But the vast majority of the album was handled by Slum Village's Jay Dee, and his thick, mellow, soul- and jazz-inflected sonics make Like Water for Chocolate one of the richest-sounding albums of the new underground movement. Common isn't always a master technician on the mic, but it hardly matters when the music serves his deeply spiritual vision and smooth-flowing raps so effectively. The singles The Light and The 6th Sense are quintessential Common, uplifting and thoughtful, and helped bring him a whole new audience. They're well complemented by the slinky, jazzy funk and lush neo-soul ballads that make up the record. Not everything is sweetness and utopia, either; Common sends up his own progressive image on A Film Called (Pimp), which features a hilarious guest appearance by MC Lyte, and spins a gripping first-person tale of revenge on the streets on Payback Is a Grandmother (though the tougher Dooinit feels a bit forced). The album could have been trimmed a bit to keep its momentum going, but on the whole, Like Water for Chocolate is a major statement from an artist whose true importance was just coming into focus.

release of his debut Love Remains in 2010, Krell has crafted a reputation as one of America's most original,

Merging ever surprising production choices and aesthetic detail with a sensual but sincere R&B inuence
and a deep, grounded emotionality, "What Is This Heart?" is the next step in Tom Krell's unique and

were conceived and written during months of grueling international touring and realized with producer

21st century pop album that takes inuence from artists as varied as Prince, Lou Reed, Burial and Tracy
More condent, daring and open than any How to Dress Well release thus far, "What Is This Heart?" is at
once Krell's most deeply personal work and also his most universal in resonance. It is a record that delves
into the core of the psyche and touches on themes of isolation, loss and existential anguish, but in the end
nds redemption in the innite possibilities of love. The songs tackle ideas of anxiety, fear, lack of control,

Belly of the Sun (Pure Pleasure)Cassandra Wilson continues to move down a highly eclectic path on Belly Of The Sun, the somewhat belated follow-up to Traveling Miles. While displaying a jazz singer's mastery of melodic nuance and improvisatory phrasing, Wilson draws on a variety of non-jazz idioms -- roots music, rock, Delta blues, country, soul -- to create a kind of earthy, intelligent pop with obvious crossover appeal. Her core band includes guitarists Marvin Sewell and Kevin Breit, who blend marvelously, Sewell mostly on mellow acoustic and Breit adding atmospheric touches on electric, 12-string, and slide guitars, as well as mandolin, banjo, and even bouzouki. Bassist Mark Peterson and percussionists Jeffrey Haynes and Cyro Baptista provide a superbly sensitive rhythmic foundation. But because Wilson returned to her home state of Mississippi to record most of this album, she made sure to book some time with local musicians. Thus guitarist Jesse Robinson guests on (and co-writes) the funky Show Me a Love, and the octogenarian pianist Boogaloo Ames plays an unpolished yet utterly heartfelt duet with Wilson on the classic Darkness on the Delta. Other guests include drummer Xavyon Jamison, trumpeter Olu Dara, pianist and vocalist Rhonda Richmond (who penned the slowly swaying Road So Clear), guitarist Richard Johnston, backup vocalists Patrice Monell, Jewell Bass, Henry Rhodes, and Vasti Jackson, and the children of New York's Middle School 44. Wilson delves into vintage blues with Mississippi Fred McDowell's You Gotta Move and a brief yet dynamic rendition of Robert Johnson's Hot Tamales. But the best tracks are the rock/pop covers: the Band's The Weight, Bob Dylan's Shelter From the Storm, James Taylor's Only a Dream in Rio, Jobim's Waters of March, and Jimmy Webb's Wichita Lineman (a 1968 hit for Glen Campbell). Wilson and band are in peak interpretive form on these ethereal reinventions. While her own lyrics may not rise to the level of a Robbie Robertson or a Bob Dylan, her versatility and focus come through clearly on the originals Justice, Just a Parade (a collaboration with neo-soul rookie India.Arie), and the Caribbean-tinged Cooter Brown.

About Pure Pleasure
At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.
During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.
A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.
We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.
We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.
To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.1. The Weight

Artificial DanceThe story of electronic music pioneer K. Leimer continues with a focus on his auteurist studio project Savant. Compiling the standalone album, 1983's The Neo Realist (At Risk), with Savant's debut 12" and a grip of compilation and unreleased tracks, Artificial Dance documents Leimer's complete collaborative venture into the unpredictable realities of music, exploring the gulf between what is expected by its creators and what is eventually - and eternally - committed to tape. Savant was designed by Leimer to tap into entropic truths, asserting an uncaged counterpart to the loop-based minimalism he produced in isolation (recently surveyed on RVNG Intl.'s A Period of Review (1975-1983)). Aligning himself with the Cage-ean principles of chance operations and musical contingency, Savant was a band sans jam. Allegorically, a blindfolded collaboration whose happenstance source music Leimer would sample, loop and sculpt at will. Leimer was creatively autonomous to the point of being a persona absentia in Seattle's 80s rock scene. Unconcerned by social status, Leimer enlisted musicians from experimental and post-punk groups in the area to come record as Savant at his home studio, Tactical. Among them were ambient composer Marc Barreca, John Foster (founder of Op Magazine - the experimental music publication), Jim and David Keller of the New Flamingos, and their bandmate Alex Petit. Others, like Roy Finch and Dennis Rea, came from a similar orbit. Even with these musicians at his beck and call, Leimer implemented a disarming musical strategy. Savant would have no fixed line up and often musicians would be asked to play instruments far outside their fortÉ. Leimer would however give loose rhythmic direction for the musicians to develop spontaneously against click-tracks. When the performance locked in with Leimer listening at the controls, he'd capture it to tape. These moments became the soul of Savant and the combustive elements that would variegate its timbres. Savant tonally operates in a space between This Heat's dark primitivism and the found sound collage of Brian Eno & David Byrne's My Life in the Bush of Ghosts. These analogies are simply stylistic, as the narrative behind The Neo-Realist's production makes clear Leimer was concocting via more alchemic means, avoiding genre aspirations by looking for accidental moments of musical intrigue and discovery. Leimer explains this process in the collection's liner notes: "I was looking for flaws, for faults to act as the stand-out features of the music." Far from a provisional stab at avant-garde sensibilities, Savant represents Leimer's repudiation of ambient music's passive side. Artificial Dance embodies a perfectionist's family portrait of outrÉ musicians conforming to Leimer's nonconformist musical ethos. Fitting for its name, Leimer created conditions for asocial brilliance with Savant, materializing an outward offering from an inward studio and a collaboration of audacious invention.1. Using Words

Here, My DearHere, My Dear is the fifteenth studio album by Marvin Gaye. The album was hailed by music critics as one of Gaye's best produced albums in the years following his death. The front cover features a painting of Gaye dressed in a toga in a neo-Roman setting, and the back cover features a temple with the word matrimony collapsing around a mock-Rodin sculpture of a romantic couple. Continuing with its vinyl reissue campaign, UMe will be reissuing this classic on 180 gram vinyl.LP 1

Refractory ObdurateWovenhand is a band led by dedicated life-musician and lyricist, David Eugene Edwards. Over the last two decades, his prolific work in both Wovenhand and the legendary 16 Horsepower has influenced and inspired a generation of musicians throughout the expansive alternative music world.
Wovenhand cannot be described in traditional terms. Their sound is an organic, weavework of neo-folk, post rock, punk, old-time, and alternative sounds. All coming together as a vehicle for David's soulful expression and constant spiritual self exploration. Sometimes sad and sorrowed and at other times uplifting, Wovenhand are always unforgettable in spirit and sound.
Refractory Obdurate is the latest album from Wovenhand. Joining David on this album are longtime percussionist Ordy Garrison, along with musicians Chuck French and Neil Keener (Planes Mistaken For Stars, Git Some).
Refractory Obdurate is a moving masterwork that shows Wovenhand exploring louder roots hinted at on prior albums. As they maintain their melodious course, Good Shepherd, Field of Hedon, and Hiss, stomp forth with a newly amplified punk rock heart. While The Refractory, Salome, and Obdurate Obscura each ascend epically into a multi-layered haze. Ten songs in all, Refractory Obdurate plays as a beautifully crafted patchwork that transcends genres and expectation; a true artistic achievement, that only Wovenhand could offer.1. Corsicana Clip

Bon Voyage (Awaiting Repress)Melody's Echo Chamber (aka Melody Prochet) has confirmed her second album Bon Voyage will be released via Fat Possum Records. Made up of seven expansive tracks, Bon Voyage marries Melody's breathless soprano to the wildest sonic excursions, always pinned to an emphatic, clattering groove as she delivers her fables of spiritual search and emotional healing in multiple tongues (French, English and Swedish).
Bon Voyage is a collaborative record between Prochet and Dungen's Reine Fiske and The Amazing's Fredrik Swahn with Melody sculpting and producing the sessions as well as encouraging the players around her to experiment, often with instruments that might be less familiar to them. It also features special guests Gustav Esjtes and Johan Holmegaard (both from Dungen) and Nicholas Allbrook (Pond).
A musical journey of discovery, Bon Voyage delves deep into the collective musical psyche of Melody and her Swedish fellow travellers, who she met one serendipitous summer's afternoon in Angers back in 2015. Prochet describes the members of Stockholm's premier neo-psychedelic overlords Dungen as "soulmates and extreme beings, uncompromisingly intense and sensitive." These kindred souls daydreamed about making music together, and then Prochet took matters into her own hands and moved to Sweden in the winter of 2016 to begin their adventure. Working in the woods of Solna, Melody says: "Swedish nature helped me to breathe and soothed me in times of anxiety. I had a majestic forest with a lake three minutes' walk from my home. Recording sessions were a break in our lives, an escape from our frustrations as young adults, parents, musicians and embittered life jugglers. What transpired was a kind of modern fairytale full of duality: beautiful and disenchanted, happy and painful, internal and external, childish and mature, but also violent and measured. We had no structure and no limits and we stepped out of our comfort zones."
Bon Voyage arrives more than five years after Melody's Echo Chamber's debut, and it is the soundtrack to a trip back from the brink, the sound of spiritual renewal, and a pilgrimage to the sonic outer limits.1. Cross My Heart

bounces. So too should you
Neo-Ancient Nubian aphorism.
Once in Time, in an emerald veld of near solitude, Two met.
One Cat and One Stas. Born under different signs. Destined to shine under
the same moons.
They agreed, upon meeting, that the old force fields rooted in sonics were
necessary once again.
They commenced to make.
It was cold out. They made. It became warmer. They continued. The orb
shone from above with intensity. They continued to make. The trees shifted
hues and shed...They made.
In this din, this mantra of making, they became Sisters of a very specific rite.
Ethereal. The foundation of empires lost and regained.
In this din the force field grew.
The first time I saw them they glowed. They were palpable amongst the flat.
Regal in a manner that is now mostly forgotten.
Not generic in that description either. Specific.
As in the Queens of some Where. The Queens of some Thing.
Sorceress Queens who dealt in aural incantation architecture.
Possessors of keys to deeper feelings. Unlockers of healing.
I became a devotee to the sonic altars they had, and continue to construct.
One Cat. One Stas. Past Lovers. Present Friends. Future Deities.
THEESatisfaction. Exalted heavenward (outward, spaceward) upon the aurally
blood price of heavily scented continuum.
They made me for you.
P.S. Change is inevitable and necessary. It is the precursor to transcendence.

Gone Baby GoneThe Dough Rollers formed in 2009 when Malcolm Ford and Jack Byrne first decided to put their passion for American roots music to work by trying their hand at earnest, neo-revivalism. But, of course, after three years of touring and the addition of Josh Barocas on bass and Kyle Olson on drums, their sound evolved, loosening, snarkening, and darkening. These days, in large part to Ford's hellbent hollering, our boys occupy the sometimes salty, sometimes sweet spot smack dab in between rock and soul. They've toured with the likes of John Fogherty, Bob Dylan, and Queens of the Stone Age, which, one way or another, led them to Nashville in 2013 to record a 7'' vinyl single for our Blue Series. The result was one of the finest guitar explosions we've ever pressed on wax and a pivotal entry in their discography. Their latest effort, Gone Baby Gone, was recorded with QOTSA's Josh Homme producing, and their swampy new swagger fully realized. It's the work of band that, after all this time and effort, understands their place in the American rock scene.Gone Baby Gone

Algiers"This is revolutionary music in the truest sense of
the word. It demands action. It requires penance. It
destroys expectations." - Stereogum
"The Death Grips of gospel torching the South's
dark underbelly." - Rolling Stone
The debut LP by Algiers is haunted by promises of the past:
the rapturous call and response of millenarian gospel, the
bellowing urgency of 60s protest soul, the scene-searching
intensity of DC hardcore and the smeared viscosity of
post-punk and no wave. After all, as Marx once said: "The
tradition of all dead generations weighs like a nightmare
on the brains of the living." But rather than revel in a state
of nostalgia, the band wields these burdened visions to
charge headlong into the future.
Over the album's eleven tracks, these three ÉmigrÉs of
the American Deep South lay waste to appropriators,
oppressors, revivalists and the cultural shock troops of
capitalism. Vocalist Franklin James Fisher's every shriek and
incantation will take you from the sweaty fervor of Dennis
Edwards-era Temptations through the righteous rebellion
of Nina Simone to the solitary midnight howls of PJ Harvey.
Shards of Lee Tesche's guitar, along with Ryan Mahan's
bass pulses and synthesizer slashes, pierce through the
processional, transforming neo-modernist hymns with
explosions of foreboding and dread that evoke the
vanguard of pop experimentation from Suicide to Roland
In an era when political subjectivity and human connectivity
have been smashed to pieces by the demands of finance
capital, Algiers has taken its stance: to maintain fidelity to
these subversive spirits and trudge toward the light. While
they may never arrive at their destination - consigned to a
life of wandering - they conjure the dead sound to life in
frightening new directions.1. Remains
