    The Birth Of Funk

Nobody in New Orleans laid into the blues so low down and dirty as Buddy Bol-den, whose Funky Butt became a staple in the repertoire of the city's early jazz bands. Jacksonville, Florida, 1960. Charles 'Hungry' Williams mentors young Clayton Fillyau after he had just joined the James Brown band: 'I don't care where you put it on those drums, remember where '1' is and you'll never lose the time.' Listen to Hungry on Huey Smith's Talk To Me Baby and then listen to how Clayton turns it into a relentless breakbeat on James Brown's I've Got Money. Earl King's Trick Bag, prefiguring the Meters, is as good an example of early New Orleansfunk as can be found. Not everything on here was cut in New Orleans. New York singer Vernon Harrel's Slick Chick is held together by an intriguingly syncopated bass line that hints at late '60s Studio One dub. And in case you think any of this was new, listen to Zutty Singleton's drum break on Victoria Spivey's Funny Feathers from 1929. Or Earl Palmer's sixteenth notes, off-backbeat snare accents and double-tempo hi-hats in 1953 on Professor Longhair's Tipitina and Who's Foolin' You.

    Birth Control

Three albums into their career, New Jersey's Fight Amp show no desire to outgrow their tough but taut noise rock tendencies, but that hardly means they are treading water in a sea of retarded sexuality either. Released in 2012, Birth Control introduces new drummer Dan Smith (who, conveniently, also designed its cover art) into vocalist/guitarist Mike McGinnis and vocalist/bassist Jon DeHart's private little fight club, and the tenacious, unforgiving music they produce in unison makes it just as easy to imagine the trio members sparring in a seedy old boxing gym as bashing away at their instruments in a dingy rehearsal space. And while the boys last just eight rounds (songs) on Birth Control, most of 'em extend well beyond the regulation three minutes and boast a series of curiously style-departing codas -- e.g., the menacing echoes of "White Pickett," the piano on "Should've Worn Black" -- that enhance the illusion of a championship bout going the distance. By and large, most tracks ("Fly Trap," "Creepy Kicks," "I Am the Corpse") focus on punishing instrumental interplay, guitars verging on the atonal, while McGinnis incessantly barks against the fading of the light, escalating to outright screams when the rage becomes more than he can contain. Not until the late-album instrumental left turn "Goner" does the band forgo its customary energy for a more measured, though no less intense, approach where bass grooves call the shots as guitars and drums deliver the body blows. All of which raises the question: are you man or woman enough to go toe to toe with Fight Amp? Then get in the ring!

    Birth Is Pain

Evil is a word that gets tossed around today by many bands in hard music. The people that you really have to watch out for are the ones that don't market their sadistic thoughts as a sales ploy. Cleveland based RINGWORM is evil incarnate. True devotees of the occult and self professed followers of serial killers, their music has a viral tendency to infect, weaken and debilitate. Front man Human Furnace's deranged vocals induce mass violence and carnage whenever unleashed. The sheer and utter brutality of their music has been converting the underground masses all around the world for over a decade. Their rabid and fanatical followers have become the Manson Family of the new millennium, willing to cause whatever destruction and chaos is ordered of them. RINGWORM's Victory debut release, "Birth Is Pain" is the soundtrack to the annihilation of society.

    New Alhambra

In many ways, new alhambra is an auditory homage to what has shaped lead singer Mathew Lee
Cothran's life. Its title, as any hardcore pro-wrestling fan will recognize, credits the Philadelphia
arena that birthed its most legendary and extreme version of it, and the use of samples from wrestling
shows serve as a reference to his upbringing. The album was characteristically made with
outdated equipment and limited by only one microphone, with Mike "Dr. Vink" Roberts playing
an essential role on bass that enrichens the rockier resonations in comparison to elvis depressedly's
previous releases. Cothran and Delaney were constantly on the move during the recording
process thanks to their new found career freedom, but none of it takes away from new alhambra
fully texturized shift toward brightly melancholic noise-pop inspired by Cothran's favorite unsung
heroes such as Waterboys, Prefab Sprout and Emperor X.

S/T II: The Cosmic Birth And Journey Of Shinju TNT

Finally, after over a month of unanswered emails and text messages, blown deadlines, and pleas to finish and turn in their new album, last week, a large brown cardboard box showed up at the Dead Oceans doorstep. It had SHINJU TNT scrawled across the bottom of the box in black magic marker, and the return address read only AK, Detroit.

Opening it revealed a sincere but poorly made diorama of futurist swirling spaces filled with toy astronauts and dinosaurs, four blown out song fragments on a TDK CDR in a zip-lock bag, three pictures, and a typewritten note from Akron/Family. A post-it on the bag declared the band refused to send the full album to anyone but the vinyl pressing plant, for fear of leaking and possible lost revenues.

From the note and a short video that arrived days later, Dead Oceans pieced together that the album was written in a cabin built into the side of Mount Meakan, an active volcano in Akan National Park, on the island of Hokkaido, Japan. It was recorded in an abandoned train station in Detroit with the blackest white dude we all know, Chris Koltay (Liars, Women, Deerhunter, Holy Fuck, No Age). Chris, on tour after finishing the record, commented: this album will transcend the internet.

Akron/Family spent the end of 2009 and half of 2010 exploring the future of sound through Bent Acid Punk Diamond fuzz and Underground Japanese noise cassettes, lower case micro tone poems and emotional Cagean field recordings, rebuilding electronic drums from the 70's and playing them with sticks they carved themselves. Upon miraculous resuscitation of the original AKAK hard drive, the album layers thousands of minute imperceptible samples of their first recordings with fuzzed-out representations of their present beings to induce pleasant emotional feeling states and many momentary transcendent inspirations.

Re-Mastered From The Original Tapes And Overseen By John Cale

Over 50 years in the arena of Contemporary Music and John Cale remains as active and unpredictable as
ever; is there a more restless and ruminating spark of an artist, who, at the age of 73, admits he still goes
to the studio every day and writes? From classical roots as a precociously gifted Welsh boy to modernclassical
experiments in New York, that lead to co-founding The Velvet Underground, Cale has filtered
that mindset through singer-songwriter, proto-punk and post-punk prisms. His endless fascination has
kept us endlessly fascinated, as Cale has consistently created new fissions, including the digital advances
of the day, absorbed by hip hop as much as conventional songwriting.

Which is where we find Cale at this precise moment, with not just the re-mastered version of one of his
most unique and lauded solo records, the 1982 masterpiece Music For A New Society, but a complete
new reworking of the album under the title M:FANS, a record that explores the relationship between
old and new, in terms of the sound and vision, and Cale's memories of the experience, in terms of his
life, and the recording. M: FANS ends with "Back To The End", a previously unfinished outtake that Cale
rediscovered among the original tapes, whose haunting spectral mood matches anything on the 1982
record. (This version retains Cale's original vocal and piano while adding viola). Back and forth M:FANS
goes, sampling the original, while creating brand new soundscapes, giving Cale the opportunity for
closure on one of the most testing eras of his life, and a way to keep moving forward.

Music For A New Society had a fraught birth, to say the least. With Cale having folded his Spy label
imprint into Michael Zilkha's Ze Records, and retired his band for a run of solo concerts, Zilkha proposed
an album to capture this new phase. Rising to the challenge - "a very good one" - Cale created a brief
for the exercise; to only allow himself the ten days booked in the studio to complete the record, and to
only set the tape rolling when he was ready to improvise. Cale once recalled the recording process as,
"like method acting. Madness. Excruciating. I just let myself go. It became a kind of therapy, a personal
exorcism." But that fed into the album's extreme qualities; its nerve-shredding raw intimacy, its fractured,
    anguished beauty.

In 1982, Music For A New Society sounded exactly like its title: something futuristic, a new kind of
songwriting exercise. In 2015, M:FANS is exactly that too, full of electrical crackle and disturbed
frequencies, a different kind of dystopian future awaits. John Cale forages on; it's the only way he knows
    how.

    Prisoner

"...really freaky and psychedelic, so plan your drug usage accordingly. Not that one needs substances to dig this Dutch trio, whose instrumental makeup - guitar, organ and drums - and sound conjure hazy memories of The Doors, among other '60s greats. The group is already a big deal in France, and with the release of 'Prisoner,' they'll likely turn some heads - and blow some minds - here in the States." - Diffuser.FM

After 97 shows in 2013 all over Europe and USA, Dutch psychedelic rockers BIRTH OF JOY have already proven to be a true live rock sensation! The band is Master in invoking a primal emotion that lays hidden in many of us. The kind of emotion that craves to burst out when you experience something pure, something real, something authentic. Well, these guys are exactly that, they ARE the real deal: sex, drugs and rock&roll! Blood, sweat and... well, mostly alcohol! Influenced by psychedelica, blues and steaming rock&roll this trio takes you back to the good old times of MC5, The Doors and even Pink Floyd. At the same time they introduce a modern twist influenced by stoner, grunge and punk and hence create their own sound! With a drum- player that could be John Bonham's son, an organist that harasses his instrument to death and a singer/guitarist that seems to be the power-incarnation of Jim Morrison, this band is bound to catapult psychedelic rock&roll back into our modern times with an energy you can't resist!

The new album PRISONER was recorded and produced in November 2013 by Joris Wolff (e.g. De Staat, Within Temptation and Mister and Mississippi) and mastered by Brian Lucey (e.g. The Black Keys, Arctic Monkeys, David Lynch and Dr. John)

New Years Day leader and vocalist Ash Costello comments "This record marks the true birth of New Years Day. It was the first time we came into our own as a band, with a vision and a new sound to show the world it truly changed our lives."

Victim to Villain was produced by Erik Ron (Panic! At The Disco, Saosin) and features guest vocals from Chris Motionless (Motionless In White). This special limited edition vinyl version was executively produced by Jeremy Saffer.

Jeremy Saffer comments "I dug deep into the photo shoots we did together around that time to find and put together something special to go along with the first ever vinyl pressing of the album. It was awesome going down memory lane and looking through photos of them recording the album in studio, live photos around the release of the album and of course the actual photos which were used for album art."

Saffer continues "We put something really special together for this vinyl release it's so awesome to finally see it come to vinyl and for it to be done right."

Seth Kauffman is Floating Action. Hailing from the small town of Black Mountain, NC Kauffman channels the collective creative energy that has been birthed and transferred between the mountains of the Swannanoa Valley. For his 6th proper studio album Kauffman holed up in his own tiny studio and took from his experiences working with luminaries such as Dan Auerbach and Jim James and built upon them to further challenge his own style and sound by creating his most advanced work to date. Body Questions is a personal testament of the Floating Action vision, it is growth that challenges and exhilarates the sensory experience constructed in the form of extraordinary pop songs.

    The Columbia Singles '67

When Mr. Tambourine Man first rumbled out of car radio speakers in 1965, it was a pivotal moment in pop history. With its jangling 12-string and epic sweep, it was the dawn of a new day: the birth of folk-rock.
And the Byrds were just getting started. The next two years saw one hit after another, from the Biblical prophesies of Turn, Turn, Turn to the raga-rock of Eight Miles High, from the exotic orchestration of So You Want To Be A Rock 'N' Roll Star to the Byrds bringing it all back home with My Back Pages.
Here they are again, 30 landmark recordings in their perfectly constructed, radio-friendly mono mixes: the forgotten rarities, withdrawn singles and, of course, all the original A and B-sides. No one has ever had a stronger run of singles than did the Byrds in their prime. No one.

    Fresh Cream

By the time Cream formed in 1966, Eric Clapton was already fairly well known, having already performed and recorded with the Yardbirds and John Mayalls Bluesbreakers. However, it was in Cream that Clapton became a global superstar. Breaking free of the traditional rock & roll song structure for a more improvisational / jazz influenced take, the bands long jams gave birth to a whole new approach to rock music. When their debut album Fresh Cream was released in 1966 it immediately became the standard by which all other bands of the era were judged.

    Sunswimmer

From just south of the Appalachian Mountains, in the rolling
hills of Athens, GA., comes the roaring young four-piece,
New Madrid. Following the critical acclaim of their 2012
independently released album Yardboat, the band signed
with Normaltown records and promptly began work on their
    sophomore album Sunswimmer.

Recorded during a cool, rainy July, under the direction of David
Barbe (Deerhunter, Drive-By Truckers), the aural landscapes forged in sunswimmer become almost palpable. Combining
reverb-drenched vocal harmonies, soaring underwater noise
and floating, meandering melodies, the sounds don't exit the
speakers as much as they condense and hang in the air like the
humid athens summer that birthed them.

    Lucifer

Lucifer is the third full-length release from West Coast dub heroes Peaking Lights. The golden duo of Aaron Coyes and Indra Dunis continue to crystallize their mesmerizing sound and find new dimensions within. Lucifer also comes at a time of great transition for this married couple and it reflects the possibilities that they have found during this new life era, especially with the birth of their son, Mikko, a guiding light muse for the album.

Recorded in Brooklyn, NY at Gary's Electric studio over the course of a month, Peaking Lights consider Lucifer a nocturnal version of their sound. It's slinkier and full of grooves. To us this record is about play and playfullness, unconditional love, rhythms and pulses, creation and vibration, says Coyes. Lucifer is also Peaking Lights' most ambitious release to date in terms of its approach and scope.

Through their studio experiments, the duo has managed to link their musical loves ie dub, krautrock, analog electronic dance music, sound collages, pop music, all while maintaining cohesive songs. Lucifer was self-produced and engineered by Al Carlson (Yeasayer, Ford & Lopatin, 0PN). LP is a limited numbered edition with an embossed jacket.

    Breaking The Model

Nashville, Tennessee-based melodic hard rockers New Medicine, led by singer/rhythm guitarist Jake Scherer, are ready to drop their first
release, BREAKING THE MODEL on new label home, Imagen Records. This will be the follow-up to 2010s 'Race You to the Bottom,' which
nearly topped the US Heatseekers Chart, and spawned such popular songs/videos as "Laid," "Rich Kids," and "Race You to the Bottom."
Scherer explains, "The writing process began 3 1/2 years ago, as I wrote over 40 songs for the new release. New Medicine has been road
testing some of the new material, seeing what tunes the audiences react strongest to, and tweaking the new songs to make it more cohesive
and translate well live. We moved from Minneapolis to Nashville to focus on the new songs, and experienced a creative re-birth, which I am
confident will take the band to a new level. The songs come first - New Medicine is not making the same record over again."

New Medicine has created a buzz from coast to coast over the past few years by scoring a Top 15 Mediabase Active Rock hit with Race You To
The Bottom and touring relentlessly for 3 years on package tours like Carnival Of Madness and Uproar Festival and with the likes of Avenged
Sevenfold, Shinedown, and more, selling over 30,000 albums in the process. And once BREAKING THE MODEL is released, New Medicine
plan to hit the road hard again, including headline dates, package tours and festival dates.

    FROOT

Froot is the upcoming third studio album by Welsh recording artist Marina Diamandis, professionally known as Marina and the Diamonds.

Welsh by birth, kaleidoscopic by nature, Marina Diamandis is a serial college drop-out who once dressed up as a boy to audition for a reggae boy-band, hoping to amuse the record label into signing her. After further failed auditions (girl bands, musicals), in a fit of ambitious pique, she taught herself piano and created Marina and The Diamonds in 2005 (it's just her, the Diamonds are the audience). She was a MySpace generation D.I.Y powerhouse who hand-made and sold her own CDs to Rough Trade until being signed to Warner Music Group's '679 Recordings' in 2008.

Acclaimed overnight as an intriguing, confrontational and theatrical amalgam of Kate Bush and PJ Harvey, she was nominated in 2010 for both the Brits Critic's Choice Award and the BBC Sound of 2010. She looks back on her early years, now, with some ambivalence. I experimented with my voice a lot, I was young, amateurish and ambitious she decides. I feel different now. My voice is far more controlled and my writing style has matured. For me, it's a real, coherent step-up. I would love to one day be a great artist.

    The Ornament

Nothing gold can stay. Even as he tried to capture it in verse, Robert Frost appreciated the ephemeral nature of beauty. And so does Grant Olsen. Yet a nod to the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet is only one of the reasons the Seattle-based songwriter, best known as half of the duo Arthur & Yu, christened his new project Gold Leaves. An autumnal character imbues these nine originals. Just as foliage buds, changes color, and eventually falls from the branches every season, so too do themes of birth, death and regeneration permeate The Ornament.

Like most creative types, Olsen's muse is always in transition. The album went through myriad permutations between inception and completion. Although he began work on it nearly four years ago, he scrapped the bulk of those early efforts after a bag containing his laptop and notebooks was stolen. The theft seemed a sign. Perhaps he was writing a second Arthur & Yu album? No. In the space of composing and refining The Ornament, Olsen had married, traveled through Central and South America, seen the birth of new family members, and watched a dear one pass. This transitional period was coupled with observations of his nation in flux, all of which informs the universe of this record. While he hoped to open these subjects up in a manner that would permit a broad range of listeners to relate to the sentiments, he recognized that their inciting intimacy precluded turning these songs into Arthur & Yu tunes.

Although he wrote all the songs, calling Gold Leaves a solo project is a misnomer. Olsen had a great deal of help making The Ornament. Jason Quever of Papercuts was by his side through most of the recording process, serving as co-producer, engineer, and multiinstrumentalist. Quever helped guide editorial choices, keeping scratch vocals when Olsen wanted to go back into the vocal booth and try again, and laid down the four-in-the-morning cello part that haunts Hanging Window. With a resume that encompasses tutelage under Motown veterans and credits with Beach House and Brightblack Morning Light, Ben McConnell was an ideal percussionist to anchor Olsen's amorphous musical ideas. Thao Ngyuen (Thao and the Get Down Stay Down, Thao & Mirah), Amy Blaschke, and members of the Moondoggies all contributed backing vocals.

The Decca Sound - The Analogue Years (Box Set)

In the late 1940s, the pioneering Decca recording engineers perfected a new set of microphone techniques that allowed the full range of frequencies to be
fully heard by listeners for the first time, and the term 'full frequency range recording' was launched. It was a major revolution in sound quality, and the
beginnings of high fidelity. Perfected with the birth of stereo in the mid-1950s, Decca's 'Full Frequency Stereophonic Sound' became a worldwide hallmark
of sonic excellence and a golden age of classical recorded music was born. THE ANALOGUE YEARS presents a 50-Album overview across 6 LPs of the celebrated international recordings that emerged from the London-based record label in that pre-digital era.
