    My Future Is My Past

Walter Wolfman Washington is a soulful musician of rare talent, as
well as a deep thinker and hip philosopher, and his hometown is New
Orleans. Walter has cut his teeth for the last 50 years playing everywhere
from European festivals to bars that Google Maps will never
find. New Orleans is notorious for its wildness, parades, and celebrations.
New Orleans is Mardi Gras, but it's also the uptown class of
Allen Toussaint and hip style and language of Dr. John. Walter has
always embodied both, but finally we have a set of songs that reflects
the yin to Walter's bring-the-party yang. This is the record that we all
have known he has in him. This is the night after that party, or maybe
just the after party. He's been given free rein to express himself, and
    that's special.

Producer Ben Ellman has assembled a sympathetic group of musicians
from keyboardists Jon Cleary and Ivan Neville to a versatile
rhythm section of bassist James Singleton and drummer Stanton
Moore. Soul Queen of New Orleans Irma Thomas lends her voice to
a cut and matches Wolfman note for note. Those two go back a long
way. Walter played guitar in Irma's band in the late 1960s. Can you
picture how much fun that might have been? And this is their first
recording together. His future is his past indeed.

as they embrace tradition and history while inspiring a new
generation. Preservation Hall Jazz Band and My Morning Jacket
rst met a few years ago and also performed together on tour

Jim James (My Morning Jacket) decided to take on the role
as co-producer with Ben Jaffe on what is the rst release of
original music from Preservation Hall Jazz Band. With songs
co-written with Dan Wilson, Chris Stapleton and the legendary
Paul Williams, these new recordings have a fresh approach but

The Original Sound Of New Orleans Soul 1960-76

For more than ten years Soul Jazz Records have been exploring and documenting the sound of New Orleans Funk. Now they turn their attention to the flipside of this musical coin - New Orleans Soul. The main force behind New Orleans Soul is Allen Toussaint, a virtual one-man hit-making machine in the 1960s, writing, arranging and producing hit after hit for an unending list of unbelievably talented local singers such as Eldridge Holmes, Maurice Williams, Betty Harris, Ernie K Doe and Diamond Joe all of whom are featured. New Orleans is also a city of great musical families. Vocalist Aaron Neville was the brother of Art Neville (who formed The Meters) and later in the 1970s joined with brother Cyril to form The Neville Brothers. Soul vocalist supreme Willie Tee is also known as Wilson Turbinton, who alongside brother Earl, formed the super-heavy funk band The Gaturs and backed the Mardi Gras Indian group The Wild Magnolias. Also included here are rare, lost and killer soulful tracks from New Orleans artists Eddie Bo (and protÉgÉe vocalist Inell Young), Jean Knight, Jimmy Hicks, Francine King and more!

    2. First Taste of Hurt - Willie Tee

    American Tunes

Nonesuch releases American Tunes, a new studio album by legendary New Orleans musician Allen Toussaint. Toussaint had just completed the album when he passed away in November of last year during a European tour. Recording took place at two sets of sessions with producer Joe Henry: solo piano at Toussaint's New Orleans home studio in 2013, and with the rhythm section of Jay Bellerose and David Piltch-joined by guests Bill Frisell, Charles Lloyd, Greg Leisz, Rhiannon Giddens, and Van Dyke Parks-in Los Angeles in October 2015. The album comprises solo performances of Professor Longhair tunes and band arrangements of songs by Toussaint, Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, Paul Simon, and others.

Allen Toussaint's work as composer, producer, arranger, and performer, especially in the 1960s and '70s, helped shape the sound of R&B, soul, and funk as we know it today. He collaborated memorably with artists ranging from Lee Dorsey and Ernie K. Doe to the Pointer Sisters and Labelle, from the Meters and Dr. John to the Band and Paul McCartney. The New York Times recently said, In Mr. Toussaint's long career as songwriter, arranger and producer he has honed a piano style that's supportive and allusive; a little trill or tremolo sums up all the splashy joys of New Orleans patriarchs like Professor Longhair and James Booker, and a syncopated chord under right-hand octaves summons gospel. Mr. Toussaint has the two-fisted, rippling vocabulary of the city's piano legacy, but he uses it in dapper ways.

Toussaint's children, Alison Toussaint-LeBeaux and Clarence Reginald Toussaint, who have long served as their father's managers, said of the American Tunes album, Our father approached this project with great care and understanding of the songs selected and paid true homage to Professor Longhair, his musical hero. He wanted to bring as much of the Toussaint touch as he could to these wonderful classics.

Nonesuch previously released The Bright Mississippi in 2009. Also produced by Henry, the record includes songs by jazz greats such as Sidney Bechet, Jelly Roll Morton, Django Reinhardt, Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington, and Billy Strayhorn. The album received tremendous critical praise, with the Boston Globe saying it couldn't sound more like New Orleans. (Toussaint) revisits jazz classics and takes them for a stroll through Preservation Hall, imbuing his own funky brand of pop-song charisma. The results are coolly sophisticated, an unfussy, mostly instrumental set of slink-and-slide joints shot through with a harmonic imagination that turns even a traditional hymn into an after-hours swing Toussaint's musical soul guides all, making the classics sound like his own.

That project indirectly grew from Toussaint's contributions to Our New Orleans, the benefit album that Nonesuch released in fall 2005 to aid hurricane victims in the wake of the Katrina disaster. That collection opens with a version of Yes We Can Can, the Toussaint song the Pointer Sisters made famous, newly recorded with producer Joe Henry, and it included a solo piano piece, Tipitina and Me, co-written by Toussaint in tribute to Professor Longhair.

Joe Henry had first worked with Toussaint when he invited the pianist to join the sessions for I Believe to My Soul, a studio convocation of mature R&B stars. Henry subsequently acted as producer on Toussaint's post-Katrina collaboration with Elvis Costello, The River in Reverse. He describes the most recent sessions: I have been working with Allen Toussaint-under his spell and subject to his influence-for a full decade now. He was a quiet radical, musically-speaking, and a prince of great humility.

"Nothing short of amazing" - Relix Magazine

    "He's the world's best-kept secret" - Bonnie Raitt

"[Jon Cleary's] genre-bending style is steeped in early traditional New Orleans R&B, soul and funk. " - LA Times

GoGo Juice is the new album from one of New Orleans' premier musical ambassadors, Jon Cleary. Made in collaboration with multi-Grammy winning producer John Porter (B.B. King, Keb Mo, Ryan Adams, Los Lonely Boys) each of the carefully crafted songs is a delicate balance of the smooth and the rough; instantly memorable hooks over a set of sophisticated and soulful arrangements. The tracks were recorded over several days deep in the bayou country of Louisiana and subsequently honed in his studio in the old Bywater neighborhood of New Orleans. A blend of musical intelligence with direct, accessible pop simplicity that draws from tradition and yet is distinctively separate from it, these songs represent the many aspects of Cleary's musical personality as a multi-instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter.

I Hear You Knocking (Pure Pleasure)

Dave Bartholomew has often been quoted to the effect that Smiley Lewis was a »bad luck singer«, because he never sold more than 100,000 copies of his Imperial singles. In retrospect, Lewis was a lucky man in many respects - he enjoyed stellar support from New Orleans' ace sessioneers at Cosimo's, benefited from top-flight material and production (by Bartholomew), and left behind a legacy of marvelous Crescent City R&B. We're lucky he was there, that's for sure.

Born with the unwieldy handle of Overton Lemons, Lewis hit the Big Easy in his mid-teens, armed with a big, booming voice and some guitar skills. He played clubs in the French Quarter, often with pianist Tuts Washington (and sometimes billed as 'Smiling' Lewis).

As the New Orleans R&B sound developed rapidly during the early '50s, so did Lewis. He scored his first national hit in 1952 with The Bells Are Ringing, but enjoyed his biggest sales in 1955 with the exultant I Hear You Knocking (its immortal piano solo courtesy of Huey Smith). Here's where that alleged bad luck rears its head - pop chanteuse Gale Storm swiped his thunder for any pop crossover possibilities with her ludicrous whitewashed cover of the plaintive ballad.

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Lightnin' Hopkins was one of the most over-recorded artists in the blues genre. The recordings here were made at a pivotal moment in his career. In 1960, at 48 years old, he was no longer a star in the black community, but was becoming a folk legend. His deeply personal music not only reflected the experiences of his community but touched a universal nerve. Chris Strachwitz, who often recorded Hopkins, has called his records »brief audio snapshots of one of the great folk poets to emerge from the African-American experience in Texas.« When he died in 1982 he had recorded well over 600 'audio snapshots'. From his prolific output this Candid session ranks amongst his finest and most intimate work.

    Dee Dee's Feathers

Vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater's 2015 effort, Dee Dee's Feathers, is a vibrant jazz showcase that pays homage to the history of New Orleans and marks the tenth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. A collaboration between Bridgewater, New Orleans trumpeter Irvin Mayfield, and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra (NOJO), the album finds Bridgewater combining her love of New Orleans' musical past with the Crescent City's vibrant present.

Recorded at Esplanade Studios, a historic 1920s church turned music studio in heart of the Treme neighborhood in New Orleans, Dee Dee's Feathers has a lush, organic sound. Bridgewater is backed here by Mayfield and his band, featuring guitarist/banjo player Don Vappie, drummer Adonis Rose, pianist Victor Atkins, and bassist Khari Allen Lee. Also featured on the album are several guests, including such New Orleans icons as keyboardist Dr. John and percussionist Bill Summers.

These are warm, largely acoustic arrangements that breathe with the energy of a live performance. Cuts like the second-line, Mardi Gras-themed Big Chief, and the similarly percussion-heavy title track sound pleasingly like in-studio jams. In contrast, standards like the romantic What a Wonderful World and the languid Come Sunday, are lush, symphonic big-band productions that juxtapose Bridgewater's crackling, resonant voice against shimmering string and horn sections.

Throughout all of Dee Dee's Feathers is Mayfield's burnished, puckered trumpet, adding a soulful counterpoint to Bridgewater's urbane vocals. Bridgewater has built a career out of combining her love of the tradition with her desire to push the boundaries of jazz style, and Dee Dee's Feathers is no exception.

    The Other Side Of Desire

In the hands of the eccentric jazz-pop poet Rickie Lee Jones, the phrase the other side of Desire could mean a lot of things. As it happens, it's where the gets her mail; the singer-songwriter has been living quietly in New Orleans for a little over a year. This past fall, she celebrated her 60th birthday with the Lost Bayou Ramblers, at d.b.a.

The Other Side of Desire is also the title of Jones' first album of original material in more than ten years. Written, recorded and rooted in the city of New Orleans, according to press materials, it was crafted with producers Mark Howard and John Porter, whose resumes are heavy with names like Roxy Music, Bob Dylan, Neil Young and the Smiths. (Porter, who also lived in New Orleans for a time, can count locals like the Honey Island Swamp Band, Jon Cleary and Tommy Malone on his personal roster as well.)

The album is pure Jones: warm and whimsical, with a keen storyteller's touch. This time around, it's infused with the sounds of New Orleans. Strains of swamp-pop, honky tonk and Cajun waltzes wind through The Other Side of Desire which, the release said, could not have been written without the backdrop of New Orleans; its river, trains, barroom ghosts and sudden bands all playing the same song.

Due to unforeseeen events which occurred late in the summer of 2005, members of disbanded projects came together to form Haarp. Embodying the murk, decay, and oppression associated with the New Orleans area, Haarp's music is a visceral wall of low end sound, its lyrics a journey through despair, hatred, self-loathing, and aggression. Its members are veterans of the New Orleans grindcore, punk and metal scenes.

Husks, the band's sophomore release on Housecore, was recorded at the University of New Orleans Performing Arts Center, Fountainbleau Room 7011, and Nodferatu's Lair by DOWN/ex-Pantera frontman and Housecore owner Philip H. Anselmo.

    Mo Beauty

Mo Beauty is the debut solo release from celebrated singer/songwriter Alec Ounsworth, who earned acclaim with his band Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. The album was produced by veteran musician/producer and fellow Philadelphia native Steve Berlin (Los Lobos, Blasters, John Lee Hooker, The Replacements), who initially suggested a New Orleans setting for recording. Working with some of the city's most storied musicians, including George Porter of The Meters on bass, Ounsworth has crafted a collection of songs that pick up where Clap Your Hands Say Yeah leave off. Mo Beauty carries on the band's vein of quirky humor, unabashed melody, and sonic experimentation, but with the weight of New Orleans and its history hovering over the recording, Ounsworth has dug deep on songs like Holy, Holy, Holy Moses (song for New Orleans), while tracks like South Philadelphia groove in a whole new way.

Mo Beauty features George Porter, Jr. on bass, Stanton Moore on drums, Robert Walter on keys, and Matt Sutton on baritone and pedal-steel guitars, with additional help from members of the talented New Orleans community.
