    Black Fire! New Spirit!

Soul Jazz Records' new release Black Fire! New Spirits! Explores deep, radical and spiritual jazz in the USA in the period between 1957-75. In the 1960s and into the 1970s, jazz music in the USA was in an almost constant state of revolution, with the music and lives of African-American artists radicalised by the advent of the civil rights movement, Black Power, and a new spiritual awakening. For over 20 years now Soul Jazz Records have been exploring this rich area of deep and spiritual jazz music with an array of albums such as Freedom, Rhythm and Sound, Universal Sounds of America, New Thing, Soul Jazz Love Strata East and more. Soul Jazz Records have also released a steady stream of reissues of lost and classic deep jazz releases over the years from artists such as Art Ensemble of Chicago, Steve Reid, Pharaoh Sanders and others. This new album features groundbreaking and revolutionary artists such as Don Cherry, Archie Shepp, The Last Poets and Yusef Lateef as well as many rare and deep lost tracks from lesser known artists such as Creative Artists Ensemble, Granchan Moncur, Lloyd McNeill, Tyrone Washington and others.

    A Whole New Thing

    Import

A Whole New Thing is the debut album of Sly and the Family Stone, released in 1967. Unlike later Sly and the Family Stone albums, A Whole New Thing was recorded live in the studio instead of being overdubbed and featured less of a Pop feel than later releases such as Dance to the Music and Stand!. The lead vocals are shared between Sly Stone, Freddie Stone, and Larry Graham; Rose Stone would not join the band until they began work on Dance to the Music.

The album is more restrained and not nearly as funky or psychedelic as their subsequent efforts, owing far more to traditional Soul arrangements. These aren't that traditional, though; Sly is already using goofier and/or more thoughtful lyrics than the Soul norm, and taking some cues from Rock in his adventurous and unexpected song construction.

    New Moon

I kept recording more songs with no regard whether or not they were gonna be on anything. That's what I'm used to doing, recording all the time and not going, 'What should I record for this record?' Usually I put out whatever happened in the last six months. With this, I had way too many songs and no mechanism for picking between them.
Elliott Smith, Tape Op Magazine, 1996, on finishing Either/Or.

Arguably the most gifted song-writer of his generation, Elliott Smith produced a large body of work that includes five solo albums, as well as From a Basement on the Hill (2004), a collection of songs completed before his death in 2003. On May 8, 2007, Kill Rock Stars will release a double CD of music by Elliott Smith entitled New Moon. The album contains 24 songs recorded between 1994-1997, a prolific time in Smith's career, when he recorded his self-titled album and Either/Or (both also released by Kill Rock Stars). Like his other work, New Moon reflects the power of Smith's ability to integrate rich, melodic music with poetic, multi-layered lyrics. Only three songs have seen prior release all on compilations most extremely limited runs.

The final mixing for New Moon was done by Larry Crane, who is also the archivist for the estate of Elliott Smith. A significant portion of proceeds from the album sales will go directly to Outside In, a Portland-based social service organization dedicated to providing diverse services for homeless youth and low-income adults.

Perturbator - the reigning master of darksynth - presents his darkest masterwork to date, the surprise mini-album New Model. New Moon

With their fourth full-length album to be released in as many years, The Men proudly present the sweeping New Moon, the most intensely personal and immersive installment yet. Never content to draw on the same methods twice, nor to recline under the heel of expectation, The Men quit the city in early 2012 to head for Big Indian, NY - transforming a remote Catskills locale into a full-fledged stray dog studio home. Entering with only the most skeletal sketches, the house was selected as an incubator for its technical limitations.

    New Alhambra

In many ways, new alhambra is an auditory homage to what has shaped lead singer Mathew Lee
Cothran's life. Its title, as any hardcore pro-wrestling fan will recognize, credits the Philadelphia
arena that birthed its most legendary and extreme version of it, and the use of samples from wrestling
shows serve as a reference to his upbringing. The album was characteristically made with
outdated equipment and limited by only one microphone, with Mike "Dr. Vink" Roberts playing
an essential role on bass that enrichens the rockier resonations in comparison to elvis depressedly's
previous releases. Cothran and Delaney were constantly on the move during the recording
process thanks to their new found career freedom, but none of it takes away from new alhambra
fully texturized shift toward brightly melancholic noise-pop inspired by Cothran's favorite unsung
heroes such as Waterboys, Prefab Sprout and Emperor X.

    New Jersey

In 1988 New Jersey spent 4 straight weeks at No. 1 in the U.S. and spawned five Top 10 singles ('Bad Medicine;' 'Born To Be My Baby;' 'I'll Be There For You;' 'Living In Sin;' and 'Lay Your Hands On Me') - the only rock album in history with that many Top 10 hits. Bon Jovi originally envisioned the New Jersey project as a double-LP, using the working title Sons Of Beaches. But in the end, Mercury Records released the album as a 12-track single LP and the band renamed it simply New Jersey, in honor of their home state.

Bon Jovi had perfected a formula for hard pop/rock by the time of New Jersey, concentrating on singalong choruses sung over and over again, frequently by a rough, extensively overdubbed chorus, producing an effect not unlike what these songs sounded like in the arenas and stadiums where they were most often heard. The lyrics had that typical pop twist -- although they nominally expressed romantic commitment, sentiments such as Lay Your Hands on Me and I'll Be There for You worked equally well as a means for the band and its audience to reaffirm their affection for each other.

    New Spirit

PVT, known as Pivot to anyone in the know, are an act that's
embraced technology at every turn - gritty, new, confronting -
and their uncompromising songwriting and musical
understanding have seen their first four albums released to
global acclaim. After years of touring, the band wound up cast
far and wide, residing each in a different continent. 2017 sees
members Dave Miller along with brothers Richard & Laurence
Pike return home to Australia with their fifth album, New Spirit.

This album contains that beautiful type of music written out of
compulsion, a calling and an impulse to explore the new place
that Australia has become -- a hotbed for political and cultural
intolerance. The country has succumbed to divisive politics and
irrational fear. Obvious fraud and immorality driven by a gutless
    media and an indifferent public.

PVT's uncompromising approach to musical self-determination
has never been this sharp, and especially never this political.
The sound of the record itself is that of a stark digital future, but
under the surface there's nostalgia for a different time, another
way of thinking, another life. PVT are exploring. Expanding on
expectations. They carry with them the bravery and courage of
the old explorer with the tolerance and understanding of the
new. And they want you to join them.

    New Beginnings

RADIO MOSCOW are a perfect example of the classic full-throttle power trio. Though by no means devoid of nuance and detail, the first thing one notices while standing in front of the band as they begin to unleash their stage show, is the feeling of being blown back by a whirlwind of energy and power, concocted by three guys locked in a groove. Led by Stratocaster genius Parker Griggs, RADIO MOSCOW have carved their own sonic niche fusing crunching, heavy Sabbath-style chords with fiery 'Hendrixian' solos and a raw intensity that is addictive and captivating, also citing the likes of Cream, Blue Cheer and Led Zeppelin as further influences.

Now, RADIO MOSCOW are gearing up for an exciting new chapter in their career with the release of the fifth studio album "New Beginnings" on Century Media Records. From the bursting guitar licks of opening track "New Beginning" over to the road dog anthem "Driftin'" and the Hendrix-like groove of "No One Knows Where They've Been", from the pounding "Pacing" to moody album closer "Dreams", RADIO MOSCOW present an authentic and electrifying mix of versatile guitar play, the passionate raw howl of Parker Griggs and a tight, energetic rhythm section. Sure, this is retro, but it's executed with heart, soul and class!

    New Soil

New Soil wasn't the first session Jackie McLean recorded for Blue Note, but it was the first one released, and as the title suggests, the first glimpses of McLean's desire to push beyond the limits of bop are already apparent. They're subtle, of course, and nowhere near as pronounced, as they would be in just a few years' time, but as with the 1959 material later issued on Jackie's Bag hints of Ornette Coleman's stream-of-consciousness melodic freedom are beginning to find their way into McLean's improvisations. His playing is just a touch more angular than the ear expects, especially given the very bluesy nature of pieces like McLean's 11-minute vamp, Hip Strut, and pianist Walter Davis Jr.'s infectious boogie-woogie Greasy. Coleman's influence is most apparent on McLean's Minor Apprehension, where the freewheeling, Coleman-esque main theme is paralleled by trumpeter Donald Byrd in a definite nod to Don Cherry.

    New Groove (Pure Pleasure)

Clarinetist Pee Wee Russell's career on record stretched all the way from the 1920s, when he played with musicians such as Jack Teagarden and Bix Beiderbecke, to the 1960s, when he appeared with Thelonious Monk at Newport and made albums that included compositions by modernists such as Ornette Coleman and John Coltrane.

Although he was pegged as being Dixieland by some and trumpeted as an elder hero of the 60s avant-garde by others, Russell remained a school unto himself. Jazz writer Whitney Balliett said that Russell played with an incomparable daring and nakedness and intuition. He had discovered some of the secrets of life and his improvisations were generally successful attempts to tell those secrets in a new, funny, gentle way.

After Russell died, his friend and musical cohort Ruby Braff, told Nat Hentoff, »Like Louis Armstrong, Pee Wee will always be contemporary.«

    Musicians:

    • Pee Wee Russell (cl)

    • Marshall Brown (tb)

    • Russell George (b)

    • Ron Lundberg (dr)

    Recording: December 1962

    Production: Frank Driggs

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    New York Dolls

When the New York Dolls released their debut album in 1973, they managed to be named both Best New Band
and Worst Band in Creem Magazine's annual reader's poll, and it usually takes something special to polarize an
audience like that. While New York Dolls clearly came from a very specific time and place, this album still sounds
fresh and hasn't dated in the least -- this is one of rock's greatest debut albums, and a raucous statement of
purpose that's still bold and thoroughly engaging.
