    Victim To Villain

    Pressed On Colored Vinyl

New Years Day leader and vocalist Ash Costello comments "This record marks the true birth of New Years Day. It was the first time we came into our own as a band, with a vision and a new sound to show the world it truly changed our lives."

Victim to Villain was produced by Erik Ron (Panic! At The Disco, Saosin) and features guest vocals from Chris Motionless (Motionless In White). This special limited edition vinyl version was executively produced by Jeremy Saffer.

Jeremy Saffer comments "I dug deep into the photo shoots we did together around that time to find and put together something special to go along with the first ever vinyl pressing of the album. It was awesome going down memory lane and looking through photos of them recording the album in studio, live photos around the release of the album and of course the actual photos which were used for album art."

Saffer continues "We put something really special together for this vinyl release it's so awesome to finally see it come to vinyl and for it to be done right."

The Evening Visits...And Stays For Years

Born of the small but vibrant Brisbane punk/new wave scene of the late Seventies, Peter
Milton Walsh began to cultivate the mysterious, moody myth that would follow him through
out his career that has taken him around the world. But before setting out abraod, Walsh
certainly made his mark on the Brisbaine scene. His band, The Apartments, formed in 1978
and spent the next year playing ample amounts of shows around Brisbaine. With a reputation
that preceeded him, Walsh was saught out by Robert Forster and Grant McLennan,
members of one of Brisbaine's most noteworthy bands, The Go-Betweens. Having been
offered an 8 album deal by Beserkly Records, Forster and McLennon asked Walsh to join
The Go-Betweens as their fourth member in late 1978. The union was, however, short lived.
There were personality differences, which led McLennon to famously say "Walsh is night, we
are day. We're sun, he's rain.".

After the deal with Beserkly fell through, Walsh returned to The Apartments, leaving The
Go-Betweens as a three piece. They went on to affectionately write a song for Walsh,
entitled "Don't Let Him Come Back", which included the line "Here he comes, with his twelve
o'clock junk...who's that dressed in black? Who's that in his apartment?". Things weren't sour
between the two bands and The Apartments recorded their first EP, "Return of the Hypnotist"
on The Go-Between's Able Label. But before the EP was even released, The Apartments
broke up and Walsh left for New York City. During his time in NYC, Walsh played
mustic with a number of bands and recorded many songs that would serve as demos for
future releases for the still defunct Apartments.

Returning to Australia in 1984, Walsh got the band back together and recorded a few
singles, including "All You Wanted". All the while the band were also recording demos, which
led to a record deal with London's legendary Rough Trade Records, prompting Walsh to
move to London. It was there that he recorded his first proper LP, "The Evening Visits... And
Stays for Years". The album received strong praise and drew comparisons to a wide range of
acts such as Cocteau Twins, Nick Drake and Bob Dylan. The NME said of the record ""after
whetting our appetites with last year's classic import single 'All You Wanted' The Apartments
have stunned us to a reverential silence. This album is a pure heart-wrencher, and should
only be listened to after dark.".

Although The Apartments and Walsh continued to tour and record with a variety of line ups,
it is these early works that provide a definitive look at their sound. Available all together
for the first time, Captured Tracks are pleased to present "The Evening Visits... And Stays for
Years" along with "The Return of the Hypnotist", the "All You Wanted" single and a collection
of demos from "The Evening Visits...". Complete with liner notes by Robert Forster and Walsh
himself, this increadible collection of Walsh's first seven years of recordings is not to be missed.

    December Day

Country music legend Willie Nelson is opening his vault with the launch of a brand-new archival
series, titled Willie's Stash. The first release of the series is
titled, December Day Willie's Stash Vol. 1.

Central to December Day is the collaboration of Willie and
Sister Bobbie. From Willie's earliest years in his native
Abbott, Texas, Bobbie, two years his senior, was a part of
his musical upbringing; the duo learned to read music and
play instruments at an early age under the tutelage of their
grandparents. Playing together in bands early on in their
careers, Bobbie has been a key highlighted member of Willie's
Family Band since its inception, and their bond as siblings
and musicians-a bond that reflects years of both practice and
    spontaneity-is palpable throughout December Day.

December Day features new versions of gems from Willie's
extensive songwriting catalog "Permanently Lonely," "My
Old Peculiar Way" and some eclectic covers Irving Berlin's
"Alexander's Ragtime Band" and "What'll I Do" with some
sprinkled contributions from other Family Band members,
including harmonica player Mickey Raphael and the late Bee
    Spears on bass.

The Willie's Stash series offers curated vault releases taken
from decades of recording and touring-a career that's long
established Willie Nelson as an all-time American icon.
December Day is Willie's fifth release since signing to
Legacy Recordings in 2012. His most recent release, Band Of
Brothers, was released in June and hit No. 1 on Billboard's
    Country Albums chart.

    Pagan Day

Official Reissue Of The 1984 Classic

Legendary Conceptual Audiovisual Group Formed By Throbbing Gristle Co-Founder Genesis P-Orridge & Alternative TV's Alex Fergusson

Collection Of Early Demos And Sketches By P-Orridge & Fergusson

Vinyl Has Been Out Of Print Since 1986

    Includes The Bonus Track "Farewell"

Shortly before Christmas 1984, the core songwriters, Genesis P-Orridge and Alex Fergusson, of underground arts collective Psychic TV, quietly released a limited edition record containing sketches and ideas for songs. Some songs would become later fully-realized arrangements, some abandoned and others were justcovered in praise of their creator. The record, in recognition of its seasonal release, was simply titled A Pagan Day and would capture the intimate songwriting sessions that were prevalent during a crucial time in the band's career.

In classic Psychic TV fashion, rumors and myths surround the album's creation. Most have suggested that it was recorded in a single session over a cup of coffee on a lone 4-track cassette recorder above an old YMCA building in London, though later revealed that the recordings were from various sessions over the course of a couple years prior to the record's release. After quickly pressing the songs to vinyl, the record was originally only available through Rough Trade fora few hours on December 23, 1984, and pressed on picture discs, which adorned a photo of P-Orridge's first born, Caresse, in exactly 999 copies. The pressing sold out immediately that day which caused Temple Records, their "in-house label", to later release a standard reissue version in 1986.

What makes the songs, or rather versions of songs, so unique is the primitive and fragile nature of the arrangements while the flimsy, immediate vocal delivery makes the album sit unknowingly between demo and fully realized album."Baby's Gone Away" and "New Sexuality" are just a couple examples of songs tha tfans of Psychic TV became intimately familiar with from live experiences, buton A Pagan Day, they are released in their infantile stages with no full band, just Alex & Genesis finding their way through the songs with an acoustic guitar, drum machine and organ. "Cold Steel" shows a true peek behind the curtain, sung effortlessly by Fergusson and would then later become the classic standard "The Orchids." Most notable is the band's cover of Pearls Before Swine's "Translucent Carriages" of which P-Orridge accords special praise to Tom Rapp, the song's original author and icon to both P-Orridge and Fergusson.

    New Morning

Sublime 1970 Album Among Loosest, Jovial of Dylan's Career

Includes Hit Single If Not for You and The Man In Me, Featured in the Film The Big Lebowski

Dylan's Phrasing and Piano Playing Parallel Efforts of His Crack Backing Band

Stunning Reissue Boasts Phenomenally Open Sound: New Morning Has Never Enjoyed Better Fidelity

The album might have saved Bob Dylan's career. At the least, it proved the icon still relevant, and his wits still in tact. And it immediately followed what remains the artist's biggest disaster, the yet-unexplained and forever puzzling Self Portrait, a nearly unlistenable attempt that caused many to wonder whether Dylan had lost his mind. If intended as a joke, it bombed, making the sublime New Morning all the more important to restore faith in the singer's creativity and songwriting prowess. It did all this and more, and stands as his finest studio effort during a five-year span.

Mastered on Mobile Fidelity's world-renowned mastering system and pressed at RTI, this restored analog version spotlights the open, woozy sound that welcomes wholeheartedly Dylan's piano, several eager guitars, female background singers, Al Kooper's organ, and snappy drumming into a world of their own. New Morning remains one of Dylan's loosest and jovial affairs, the instruments retaining an off-the-cuff sensibility relating to a nightclub atmosphere or live stage feel. On this reissue, notes naturally dangle and fade, allowing the playful vibes and humor to come through like never before. Consequently, the album can be experienced with a new perspective. Wider grooves mean more information reaches your ears.

"Many of the songs seem to have been made up on the spot, with confidence in the ability of first-rate musicians to move in any direction at any time," wrote Dylan expert and cultural critic Greil Marcus in his original review for the New York Times. "The riffs, inventions, and studio jams of New Morning have their own personality the full joy of anticipating the right move and the exhilaration of hitting it square and bouncing off a chord into a new lyric."

These observations hold true today, for the 1970 effort claims a daring flair Dylan rarely exhibited on albums before or since. Enthusiasm and excitement surround his singing, and his work on the 88s underlines the liberating arrangements. Offbeat and eclectic, the record frolics and swings, with the Bard and his crack band pursuing jazzy steps ("Sign on the Window"), shuffling spoken-word experiments ("If Dogs Run Free"), and soulful rock ("The Man In Me," used to wonderful and prominent effect in the Coen Brothers film The Big Lebowski).

Throughout, Dylan's phrasing communicates joyousness and simplicity seemingly carried over from the stripped-down John Wesley Harding and Nashville Skyline. The record's dominant sentiments trace to the lead track, "If Not For You," one of the singer's all-time greatest singles, stitched with country threads and warmth that pervades everything that follows. Yes, New Morning may lack the iconic status of some of Dylan's better-known records. Yet the underdog stature makes repeat listens all the more rewarding.

    Judgement Day EP

Mike Hyde has been cultivating private press style recordings since high school, for the past few years under the handle Medication. What initially was a private endeavor went public in 2007 when a friend of his in Germany asked that he write music for a short film he was working on. The Medication recordings have all been a solo affair except for a side on a four tape comp, Judges Cave: The Hidden Sounds of New Haven, that came out in early 2010.

Recorded with Kevin McMahon (The Walkmen, Titus Andronicus, Swans) in Upstate New York through the late Winter/Spring of 2011, Days is a gorgeous suite of timelessly melodic, achingly melancholy pop songs and a delightfully confident follow-up to 2009s exceptionally well-received eponymous debut.

    The Next Day

David Bowie's First New Album in Ten Years and his 30th Studio Recording.

On 2 LP with CD and Bonus Tracks

The Next Day was produced by long-term collaborator Tony Visconti and was recorded in New York. In the early morning hours of Tuesday, January 8, David's birthday, Iso/Columbia Records released his new single titled 'Where Are We Now?' In recent years, radio silence has been broken only by endless speculation, rumor and wishful thinking. A new record-who would have ever thought it? Who'd have ever dreamed it? After all, David is the kind of artist who writes and performs what he wants when he wants when he has something to say as opposed to something to sell. Today, he definitely has something to say. Now we all know, David Bowie has been in the recording studio-just when we least expected it.

Throwing shadows and avoiding the industry treadmill is very David Bowie despite his extraordinary track record that includes album sales in excess of 130 million; not to mention his massive contributions in the area of art, fashion, style, sexual exploration, and social commentary. It goes without saying that he has sold out stadiums and broken ticket records throughout the world during this most influential of careers.

    A Day In Nashville

For his new album A Day In Nashville, guitarist Robben Ford and his band spent a day in the Music City studio Sound Kitchen, invited some friends and recorded seven new songs penned by Ford, along with his version of "Poor Kelly Blues" from Maceo Merriweather and "Cut You Loose", first recorded by James Cotton. The album is due out in 2014 via Mascot Label Group/Provogue.

The follow up to 2013's acclaimed Bringing It Back Home, A Day in Nashville was originally planned as a live album to be recorded during his 2013 European tour. Inspired to write some new music, Robben instead decided to challenge himself and his band by doing something he's never done before in his 40-plus year career: recording an album live in the studio, in one session."We had a great experience," says Robben, who was joined by guitarist Audley Freed, keyboardist Ricky Peterson, bassist Brian Allen, drummer Wes Little and trombonist Barry Green. "We decided to make the record in a controlled environment, but treat it like a live show."

    Coming Forth By Day

Coming Forth By Day is described as Cassandra Wilson's moody, soulful showcase for contemporary yet timeless interpretations of standards associated with her musical inspiration, according to information from Legacy Recordings.

"Cassandra Wilson is one of the world's most elegant and tasteful artists. Her decision to channel the spirit of Billie Holiday on her new album is a perfect complement to Legacy's plans for celebrating Lady Day's centennial, said Adam Block of Legacy Recordings. "It's an absolute treat to work with Cassandra in the realization of this unexpected and sublimely beautiful music.

Coming Forth By Day was produced by Nick Launay, known as Nick Cave's producer for the last decade among many other adventurous credits. Wilson recorded the music at Seedy Underbelly studios in Los Angeles at Seedy Underbelly studios, accompanied by an A list musical team including producer Launay (Nick Cave, Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, Arcade Fire), guitarists T Bone Burnett and Nick Zinner of the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, string arranger Van Dyke Parks and rhythm section The Bad Seeds (drummer Thomas Wydler and bassist Martyn P. Casey).

Wilson is a leading American jazz vocalist/musician/songwriter/producer who has received many awards and accolades, including: two Grammys (1996, Best Jazz Vocal Performance for New Moon Daughter; 2009, Best Jazz Vocal Album for Loverly);Down Beat's Female Jazz Vocalist of the Year (1994-1996); the Montreal International Jazz Festival's Miles Davis Prize (1999); named America's Best Singer in Time magazine (2001); honorary doctorate in the Arts from Millsaps College (2003); added to the Mississippi Blues Trail (2010); and taken home the BET Soul Train Award (2011, Best Traditional Jazz Album for Silver Pony).

Transit believes music is about connecting with people and that's exactly what they do. Through the honesty and individuality expressed in their music, the North Shore Boston band has been able to connect with kids from their humble beginnings in the Northeast Pop-punk scene and nationwide as they have toured more and more. Through their relentless tour schedule and incredible work ethic, the band has shared the stage with artists such as Taking Back Sunday, Bayside, Senses Fail, Saves The Day, Four Year Strong, The Wonder Years and many more as well as a stint on the entire Vans Warped Tour.

When they released Listen & Forgive in fall of 2011 the band received accolades from the press for their ability to deliver a record that became an instant classic among their core fans but also transcended the genre, bringing the band to a much wider audience. With their 2nd Rise Records full length, Young New England, the band continues onward
and upward. Teaming up with Ted Hutt (The Gaslight Anthem, Flogging Molly) as producer, the band has delivered their catchiest, most heartfelt record yet.

Every Time I Die is a Southern hardcore rock band from Buffalo, New York, founded in the winter of 1998. Across a series of five albums, they have defined a scene, with their unique blend of metalcore, punk and southern rock. Now with their debut album on Epitaph, New Junk Aesthetic, Every Time I Die return to the sound that made earlier albums like Hot Damn fan favorites. We know that our older stuff, which was a lot faster and a lot heavier, definitely made our live shows a lot more fun, because everyone was moving and singing along, says frontman Keith Buckley. We're kinda going back to the way we started.

Produced by Steve Evetts (He Is Legend, A Static Lullaby, Dillinger Escape Plan, Saves the Day, Lifetime, Story of the Year). Features guest vocals by Matt Caughthran of the Bronx and Greg Puciat of Dillinger Escape Plan.

    Save For A Rainy Day

Mastered from the Original Mono Reels!

It was a Hollywood music publicist's fondest dream and worst nightmare, all at the same time. Jan Berry, the lead vocalist, composer and producer of famed surf/hot rod duo Jan & Dean had crashed his Corvette on the Sunset Strip late at night on April 19, 1966, almost killing himself. Jan remained in a coma for some time afterwards, and his rehab would take years rather than months. The hitmaking partnership of Jan & Dean, an act that had launched 14 winners into the national Top 40 over the previous six years, had come to a screeching halt. Or had it?

Dean Torrence, singer of the duo's ozone-scraping high parts, its specialist in vocal-stacking and its idea man when it came to personal presentation, decided to carry on single-handed while his partner was incapacitated. With the assistance of a few celebrated friends and session men who were regulars in Phil Spector's Wrecking Crew, bassist Joe Osborn, pianist Larry Knechtel, guitarist James Burton and drummer Mickey Jones, Dean began recording tracks whenever he could in Osborn's North Hollywood garage for what would become the new Jan & Dean album, Save for a Rainy Day.

The album was a spectacular concept, with its rain-related songs, both new and old, all linked together with the sound of a summer thunderstorm. Dean issued the LP in very limited quantities on his own J&D label and the album became the ultimate rarity in the Jan & Dean catalog. Enter Sundazed Music, who, in 1996, purchased the masters and rights to the album from Dean and gave it a proper, expanded release. Now Save for a Rainy Day appears on Sundazed on limited edition 180g vinyl, mastered from the pristine mono reels, in all its original glory!

The Strung Out experience should ultimately begin with this, their debut, album. While still an astounding 13 songs of melodical fury, it often shows the youth of the band.

The listener is floored from the get-go by 'Population Control, and the rest of the album refuses to let you up on your feet. Aggressive, speed-driven and catchy the whole way through, but Strung Out's metal influence pokes through often with heavy palm-muting and shredding solos. The drumming is spectacular as always, however, it is interesting to listen the the chronological growth in Jordan Burns' talent. He was good then, but he is leaps and bounds ahead of this album now. This is one of the first records that defined the new, talented melodo-speed punk sound, and Strung Out would continue leading the genre in the years to come.

    One Lovely Day (Awaiting Repress)

Dug deep into the rich soil of American music, Cope's roots are complex. You may think of Bill Withers or Neil Young or John Lee Hooker or Van Morrison or Willie Nelson or Al Green. Yet, listening to Cope, you also may think none of the above. You may not think at all, but rather feel a man exposing stories that haunt his heart.

He was born Clarence Greenwood, a child of the '70s, and his life journey is as singular as his art. He is the radically mashed-up product of Greenville, Mississippi; Memphis, Tennessee; Vernon, Texas; Washington, DC; and Brooklyn, New York. These locations are felt everywhere in his stories. His sounds are southern rural, big sky lonely, concrete urban, and painfully romantic. In the past nine years, he has produced four albums of depth and distinction, each a critical chapter in his search for a sound that paints an auditory American landscape in which despair wars with hope, tied to love, is elusive.

Cope's musical evolution was catch-as-catch can. Folk tales, whether through William Faulkner or Big Bill Broonzy, shaped his sensitivity. A few college courses at Texas Tech alternately bored and excited him. In Austin in the '80s, he took sound classes and found himself fooling with a primitive four-track setup. Turntables intrigued him. He heard hip hop as inspired invention. For years, he got lost in his self-designed lab, cooking up beats and motifs that only later would be shaped into songs. This, his new album, One Lovely Day is anchored by the yearning title track single which features some of his finest songwriting to date.

As Rhymesayers was transitioning from a local Twin Cities crew, who were known for
explosive and engaging live shows at coffee shops, raves, and venues around town, into
a full-fledged independent label, some of the most integral players in the crew decided to
form a supergroup, and thus began the legend of The Dynospectrum.

The group's formula was largely centered on the four MCs, Slug of Atmosphere, I Self
Devine of The Micranots, Beyond (better known as Musab), and Mr. Gene Poole of Phull
Surkle. Each of them had already made a notable impression on the Twin Cities scene,
so the idea of them coming together was easy to view as a force to be reckoned with.
However, an essential element of The Dynospectrum was its production, as Ant (of
Atmosphere) was digging deep into his explorations of painting sound with dark and
moody strokes. Yet another signature aspect to this album was its iconic artwork,
provided courtesy of the Headshots resident artist, Aaron "Abuse" Horkey, who has also
provided some new work for this special vinyl edition. Horkey's uniquely exquisite graffiti
stylings give the album a comic book-like essence while maintaining an air of elegance
and fine art. Lastly, in order to take all this creative energy and shape it into something
real, label CEO, Siddiq Sayers, acted as the sound engineer at the time for the newly
formed Rhymesayers studios, and took the lead on distribution and management for the
    project.

All of this resulted in The Dynospectrum being a landmark release in the Rhymesayers
catalog, regarded to this day as a cult classic, which makes it long overdue that we finally
get to see this full release available on vinyl for the very first time. This upcoming special
vinyl edition, just like our recent Overcast! 20th Anniversary vinyl release, has been
completely re-mixed from the original reel-to-reel tapes and remastered, complete with
bonus unreleased material from those same recording sessions. All the original music

Lightnin' Hopkins was one of the most over-recorded artists in the blues genre. The recordings here were made at a pivotal moment in his career. In 1960, at 48 years old, he was no longer a star in the black community, but was becoming a folk legend. His deeply personal music not only reflected the experiences of his community but touched a universal nerve. Chris Strachwitz, who often recorded Hopkins, has called his records »brief audio snapshots of one of the great folk poets to emerge from the African-American experience in Texas.« When he died in 1982 he had recorded well over 600 'audio snapshots'. From his prolific output this Candid session ranks amongst his finest and most intimate work.

    • Lightnin' Hopkins (vocal, guitar, piano)

Recording: November 1960 at Nola Penthouse Studios, New York City, by Bob d'Orleans

    Production: Nat Hentoff

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Re-Mastered From The Original Tapes And Overseen By John Cale

Over 50 years in the arena of Contemporary Music and John Cale remains as active and unpredictable as
ever; is there a more restless and ruminating spark of an artist, who, at the age of 73, admits he still goes
to the studio every day and writes? From classical roots as a precociously gifted Welsh boy to modernclassical
experiments in New York, that lead to co-founding The Velvet Underground, Cale has filtered
that mindset through singer-songwriter, proto-punk and post-punk prisms. His endless fascination has
kept us endlessly fascinated, as Cale has consistently created new fissions, including the digital advances
of the day, absorbed by hip hop as much as conventional songwriting.

Which is where we find Cale at this precise moment, with not just the re-mastered version of one of his
most unique and lauded solo records, the 1982 masterpiece Music For A New Society, but a complete
new reworking of the album under the title M:FANS, a record that explores the relationship between
old and new, in terms of the sound and vision, and Cale's memories of the experience, in terms of his
life, and the recording. M: FANS ends with "Back To The End", a previously unfinished outtake that Cale
rediscovered among the original tapes, whose haunting spectral mood matches anything on the 1982
record. (This version retains Cale's original vocal and piano while adding viola). Back and forth M:FANS
goes, sampling the original, while creating brand new soundscapes, giving Cale the opportunity for
closure on one of the most testing eras of his life, and a way to keep moving forward.

Music For A New Society had a fraught birth, to say the least. With Cale having folded his Spy label
imprint into Michael Zilkha's Ze Records, and retired his band for a run of solo concerts, Zilkha proposed
an album to capture this new phase. Rising to the challenge - "a very good one" - Cale created a brief
for the exercise; to only allow himself the ten days booked in the studio to complete the record, and to
only set the tape rolling when he was ready to improvise. Cale once recalled the recording process as,
"like method acting. Madness. Excruciating. I just let myself go. It became a kind of therapy, a personal
exorcism." But that fed into the album's extreme qualities; its nerve-shredding raw intimacy, its fractured,
    anguished beauty.

In 1982, Music For A New Society sounded exactly like its title: something futuristic, a new kind of
songwriting exercise. In 2015, M:FANS is exactly that too, full of electrical crackle and disturbed
frequencies, a different kind of dystopian future awaits. John Cale forages on; it's the only way he knows
    how.

    New York Before The War

Jesse Malin returns in the New Year with a brand new album: New York Before The War, preceded by a single, Addicted.

Arriving almost five years on from his last record (2010's Love It to Life), Jesse's artistic ambitions for New York Before the War, were high: he knew he had to make it count. "I wanted to make a record that encompassed everything I've done, since I started with my hardcore band, Heart Attack, when I was twelve or or thirteen through bands like D Generation and then my solo career, but I also wanted to challenge the listeners who have been with me - and challenge myself."

Pared down from close to forty songs, New York Before the War album more than matches that ambition: A soundtrack to a life lived with meaning. "This is an era when music is so disposable," Malin worries. "People talk about the death of the album and even the death of rock & roll. But this is not just a shuffle of songs. There is a cinematic thread, a story."

Sessions for the album began in Virginia, Nashville before moving on to New York, finishing up at the Magic Shop in Soho. Players include such downtown New York all-stars as guitarist Derek Cruz, bassist Catherine Popper and drummer Randy Schrager. Don Dilego produced early sessions for the album in Virginia, and Malin and Cruz co-produced in New York. Brian Thorn, who worked on David Bowie's The Next Day, engineered and mixed the album.

Opening with The Dreamers, a haunting ballad that evokes both the alienation and the sense of deep connection that travel can bring (and very nearly became the album's title track), the album moves on through darker meditations like She's So Dangerous and Bar Life. Elsewhere, taut, upbeat rockers like Freeway (which features a blistering solo by the MC5's Wayne Kramer) and Turn Up the Mains (with Alejandro Escovedo on backing vocals) dictate the pace and Peter Buck contributes a vintage R.E.M.-style guitar part to I Would Do It For You, a tale of personal loyalty filled with longing and an aching sense of conviction.

    Tubby's New Groove (Pure Pleasure)

Over the past decade there has been a small avalanche of previously unreleased live recordings by the late, great Tubby Hayes, arguably the UKs most accomplished post-war jazz instrumentalist and a figure already accorded - quite rightly - legendary status. Each has added much to our knowledge of Tubby's musical activities outside the recording studio, but this new release unearths a session which had lain forgotten since 1959 and which significantly is an addendum to what has long been seen as Tubby's first album masterpiece Tubby's Groove. Indeed the music contained on this LP is among the most significant pieces of British jazz history to have been discovered in a long, long time.

This new LP is every bit the equal of the original album and, as previously stated, in parts the music even outstrips its predecessor. Regardless of provenance these rediscovered recordings are, in this writer's opinion, some of the most important of Tubby Hayes career and will doubtless only add to our appreciation and admiration of a player who was truly deserving of the status of world-class. Over fifty years on, Tubby's immense musicianship, talent and creative charisma can still stun new listeners and this new album is the perfect introduction to a performer in whom we can still be proud.

    Musicians:

    • Tubby Hayes (tenor saxophone)

    • Terry Shannon (piano)

    • Jeff Clyne (bass)

    • Phil Seaman (drums)

    A Day Dark With Night / TMA-3

A special, limited edition split 12 between long time friends, and stalwarts in the new wave of American metal, Junius and Rosetta, has been announced for release courtesy of The Mylene Sheath. Discussed between both bands for years, this collaboration is finally seeing the light of day and finds Junius contributing new song A Day Dark With Night (clocking in at around eight minutes), and Rosetta unleashing TMA-3 (which runs just under ten minutes).

Artwork direction, design and layout for the new release was handled by Mike Wohlberg at the Fat Kid! Illustration (The Dillinger Escape Plan, Pelican, Tombs) and will be strictly limited to 1,000 copies. Both tracks appear on one side of the LP, with an intricate laser etching on the other side. The jackets are printed on 20pt SBS board and packaging includes inserts containing lyrics and liner notes from each band. Each copy of the record will also come with a download card that includes codes for cover songs by each band.
