Music Industry 3. Fitness Industry 1. is an EP of new songs and remixes. The EP contains three new songs stemming from the writing and recording sessions for their critically acclaimed album Rave Tapes, released earlier this year, alongside remixes of three songs from that record by Blanck Mass, Pye Corner Audio and Nils Frahm. The EP was recorded at the band's Castle Of Doom studio in Glasgow, by the band with Paul Savage.
Music Industry 3. Fitness Industry 1. rounds off a sterling year's work for the Glasgow five-piece. Following the release of Rave Tapes in January, they completed a worldwide sell out tour, including two shows at London's Royal Festival Hall. The band released a comprehensive deluxe edition of their seminal 1999 album Come On Die Young via Chemikal Action in the summer, coinciding with a run of imperious festival performances that included headlining stages at Glastonbury and Latitude festivals.1. Greasepaint SmileThe unreleased second album by an original lady from the canyon. Recorded and recanted in 1969, Greasepaint Smile is more assured than its self-titled, Tetragrammaton-issued predecessor. Weinberg's finger-picked acoustic is layered over distant drumming, while her gravel-pit voice evokes life, love, and mortality. Fellow Torontonian Neil Young sears "Houses" with his signature fuzz-tone, casting chaos over the beautiful ballad, while J.D. Souther, Kenny Edwards, and Nils Lofgren, pick up the slack. The WildLate in 2016, the trio of Nils Edenloff, Paul Banwatt, and Robin Hatch hit the road for a unique set of shows in some of their favorite venues across North America and Europe. They had been hard at work writing their next album and wanted to work out the new material the way they love best: by bringing it to their fans in person. As Nils put it, "I've never been good about focusing on a theme or having a specific plan at the outset of a new record. For me, writing music tends to be more of a constantly evolving process, like following one strange trail after another until a song has come to its general conclusion. This time around, we're following that natural writing process more and inviting the fans to come along those trails with us." Over the ensuing months, they took the lessons of the road into the studio, laying ten new tracks to tape. Earlier this year, fans had their first chance to hear the results with the release of singles "White Lights" and "Beacon Hill." Now, the full fruit of their efforts can be found on The Wild, which will be released via Saddle Creek and Paper Bag. The Rural Alberta Advantage's percussive folk songs about hometowns and heartbreak, and relentless tradition of touring have taken the trio from humble recognition amongst indie rock die-hards as Canada's best unsigned band to sold-out tours and devoted fans around the world with featured coverage from Spin Magazine, Pitchfork, The New York Times and Rolling Stone all taking note. The band has been nominated for two 2012 Juno Awards (Best New Group and Video of the Year for their song "Stamp"), long listed for the 2011 Polaris Award, and awarded the CBC Music Prize for Best Independent Artist in 2014.1. Sarah Neufeld is a violinist and composer based in MontrÉal, Canada. Best known as a member of Arcade Fire, she is also a founding member of the acclaimed contemporary instrumental ensemble Bell Orchestre and has performed and recorded with many other groups, including The Luyas, Esmerine and Little Scream.
Neufeld began developing pieces for solo violin in a more formal and focused sense in 2011, though she has made improvisation and solo composition part of her process and practice since first picking up the instrument at a young age. Neufeld counts Bela Bartok, Steve Reich, Iva Bittova and Arthur Russell among the formative influences for her solo work, in tandem with an ear for the textures and sensibilities of contemporary electro-acoustic, avant-folk and indie rock music.
Neufeld's debut solo album Hero Brother indeed channels all of the above, flowing through shifting atmospheres and oscillating between restrained, stately ambience, emotive Études, and raw kinetic energy. Small touches of wordless vocalisation, harmonium and piano supplant the violin in a few places. The album was recorded in Berlin by pianist and producer Nils Frahm, with Neufeld's performances captured in a number of locations with site-specific acoustics, including an abandoned geodesic dome, an underground parking garage, and the legendary Studio P4 orchestral recording hall at the broadcast complex of the former GDR.1. Aventine (Awaiting Repress)'Aventine' is the second studio album from Agnes Obel. It is the follow up to her critically acclaimed debut album 'Philharmonics' (2010), which has sold 450,000 copies across Europe, achieving Platinum status in France and Belgium, five times Platinum in her native Denmark, where Agnes picked up five Danish Music Awards (the Danish Brits) in 2011.
Originally from Copenhagen, Agnes has lived in Berlin since 2006, where 'Aventine' was recorded at her Chalk Wood Studios between January and May this year. Like 'Philharmonics', the new album was written, arranged, and produced by Agnes, who provides piano and vocals. Anne M_ller, who has also played with Nils Frahm, adds cello, with Mika Posen of Timber Timbre playing the violin and viola on 'The Curse', 'Pass Them By' and 'Fivefold'. Robert Kondorossi of Budzillus plays guitar on 'Pass Them By'.
While touring 'Philharmonics' I kept on getting all these ideas for recording, and I wanted to explore the cello and other string instruments says Agnes of 'Aventine'. I recorded everything quite closely, miking everything closely in a small room, with voices here, the piano here - everything is close to you. So it's sparse, but by varying the dynamic range of the songs I could create almost soundscapes. I was able to make something feel big with just these few instruments.1. Chord Left

Mended With Gold
LP Pressed On Opaque Gray Vinyl
In 2006 singer-songwriter Nils Edenloff, percussionist Paul Banwatt, and multi-instrumentalist Amy Cole came
together to release their debut self-titled EP as The Rural Alberta Advantage. The ensuing years have brought
two full-length albums (2008's Hometowns and 2011's Departing), widespread critical praise (SPIN, The New
York Times, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, NPR, among others), two Juno Award Nominations (Best New Group,
Video of the Year), a Long List Nomination for the Polaris Music Prize, and a hard-earned reputation as one of
the most impressive live bands you'll ever see. It was through all of this that The RAA's latest album, Mended
With Gold, took shape.
The twelve songs found on the album have been filtered through these experiences and achievements,
pushing them to heights previously unreached by the band. While maintaining the heartfelt lyrics, fetching
melodies, and explosive percussion that won the band a loyal following worldwide, Mended With Gold makes
it clear that The RAA have reached the next level. From the first moments of album opener "Our Love" it
becomes unmistakable that these collective experiences has helped the band compose the most fully-realized work of their career.
While the sonics have now evolved, the plaintive lyrics and creative arrangements that helped define the
band have remained. Standout tracks "Terrified, On The Rocks, Runners in the Night, and Vulcan, AB
confront ideas of love, loss, and heartbreak through the pain of going through such experiences and the
person that comes out on the other side of it.
The ideas and moods created in these songs tie back to the album title Mended With Gold, embracing the idea
that the breakage and repair of an object becomes part of its unique history and ultimately makes it more
valuable instead of a blemish to disguise. The Rural Alberta Advantage have taken all of their successes,
losses, adventures, and heartbreaks over the past few years, and forged them together into an unforgettably

The Mountain Has Fallen EP'The Mountain Has Fallen EP features collaborations with Nas, Danny Brown, Academy Award-winning composer Steven Price and a brand new solo composition.
'The Mountain Has Fallen' starts with Systematic, DJ Shadow and Nas' first-ever collaboration together. The song debuted during the season premiere of HBO's Silicon Valley in April. Horror Show finds Shadow and Danny Brown collaborating for the first time over a jagged, haunting soundscape. Good News is a brand new composition, reminiscent of some of Shadow's more free-form, fractured work found on 2016's 'The Mountain Will Fall' full-length.
The EP closes with Corridors, a piece featuring Academy Award-winning composer Steven Price (who scored the 'Gravity' film). Shadow is a massive fan of his work, and Price wrote and programmed the string parts on the song.
From the start of my last album, I envisioned collaborating with other instrumentalists who operate outside of the bass and hip-hop realms, ultimately working with the amazing Nils Frahm and Matthew Halsall. Like many, I had always been enthralled by the soundtrack for the film 'Gravity,' and went about connecting with Steven purely as a fan. I was overjoyed when the opportunity to combine on a song came to pass. His ability to harness orchestral elements and join them with a sound design aesthetic made my contributions seem almost effortless, which is the mark of a fruitful partnership. - DJ Shadow, on Corridors
Turns out sometimes you should meet your heroes. Working with Josh to create 'Corridors,' hearing musical ideas and phrases come back to me twisted and skewed through the filter of his unique sensibilities, was an amazing experience. The mark of a good collaboration is when the track heads off in a direction you could never have imagined when working on your own, and no one puts a track together like DJ Shadow. It was an honour to work with him. - Steven Price, on Corridors1. Systematic (feat. Nas)

Death PeakClark returns this spring with Death Peak. The album deftly weaves together the various threads of his extensive work, intertwining euphoric melodies and visceral rhythms of warehouse rave with newer vocal and choral elements.
Death Peak exposes the tension in Clark's musical vocabulary I love finding the fulcrum between opposites - I want my tracks to have sharp teeth, but you want to stroke them too. They sound ancient, but beamed in from the future, soft, corrosive. Album track 'Peak Magnetic' is a club-ready 4 am affair - vigorous, singular, hard to define. As Clark explains I wanted the kick to sound like some massive natural event, barely controlled, a boulder bouncing down a hill with birds tweeting around it. A complete mudball of a pulse that anchors everything to it through sheer mass. It makes me think of outdoor springtime raving. 'Catastrophe Anthem' features the voices of a children's choir eerily chanting the mantra, We are your ancestors. Clark has rarely used vocals before, but here every song has an element of human voice. Nearly all the tracks have some form of vocal recording on them. I only realized this late in the recording process. I get hypnotized by the human voice - the most perfect synth. Vocals can be a bit of an awkward hat, that producers wear to try and get attention. Death Peak voices are the opposite of that. The vocal elements are just another instrument in the mix. It's taken me awhile to get to this level of confidence with it.
Recently he released a split 12-inch with label mates Mark Pritchard & Bibio and worked remixes with the likes of Nils Frahm and Max Richter. Significantly, Clark has turned his hand to scoring. He released the foreboding cinematic soundtrack to the 2016 BAFTA nominated Sky Atlantic series 'The Last Panthers' and composed a score for Macbeth at the Young Vic theatre. Late in 2016 he composed 'Enter The Void' for especially The Echo Society orchestra, conducted by Joe Trapanese (M83 & Daft Punk collaborator) and performed at the historic Ace Theatre, LA. Clark signed to Warp in his late-teens. His studio sound has evolved and matured over two decades; although he would say he's only just starting. His amorphous industrial noise has ever-grown and influenced producers, dancefloors and festivals around the world.LP 1

SketchesClassically trained pianist, violinist, producer, and composer, Poppy Ackroyd turned heads in the neo-classical world with her previous works Escapement and Feathers, as well as her involvement in Hidden Orchestra (Tru Thoughts). Advocated by giants of the genre, Hauschka and Nils Frahm, the unique musician has returned with a mini-album to be released on Bjork's label One Little Indian Records.
The songs serve to reintroduce listeners to Ackroyd's most stunning pieces from her previous albums, all of which have been reworked into 'acoustic' solo piano arrangements alongside four brand new unheard pieces, which offer a taste of a new forthcoming record.
The record, aptly named Sketches, due to its stripped down nature, is bejeweled by thematic undercurrents - birds are the inspiration for three of the tracks, which are to be released together as the lead singles from the album.
'Birdwoman' and 'Glass Sea' feature field recordings of birds and the ocean, recorded on Brighton Beach and North Rona respectively. 'Feathers' is the title track of my second album Feathers says Ackroyd, discussing the theme of birds.
'Feathers' is a piece about hope - 'Hope is the thing with Feathers' (Emily Dickinson), 'Birdwoman' is a reworking of a piece I originally wrote as a soundtrack to a silent film based on a Siberian folk tale, and 'Glass Sea' attempts to capture the feel of a boat trip I took to the remote islands of North Rona and Sula Sgeir, North of the Outer Hebrides. The ocean was unusually still, reflecting the sky like a sheet of glass, but the sky became busy with birds as we approached the islands.
Ackroyd is a keen collaborator, having created soundtracks for film, dance, physical theater and radio. The artist won a BAFTA for an animation soundtrack that she wrote and performed in 2015. Through studying contemporary classical piano works and listening to electronic music, Ackroyd developed a unique compositional style, using contemporary pianistic ideas whilst also inhabiting the world of sound beyond the keyboard, using unconventional techniques to 'play' other parts of the instruments as well.
Talking about the recording of Sketches, Ackroyd said: The songs were recorded just outside of Brighton at Retreat Studios, close to the sea on the edge of the village, surrounded by hills, fields, and wildlife. As if by magic, it began to rain just before I began to record the track 'Rain', and ended shortly after I finished. You can hear the rain build and then die away with the music on the finished piece.
I have loved creating this solo piano album. There are normally all these layers that I use to create a world of sound, that I love to build and sculpt, but there is something really special about communicating simply through the instrument alone. With other layers there is always something to hide behind, with only the piano you can just focus on your technique and expression, everything feels very audible and exposed and that is very exciting, especially in a live context.1. Nothing Violates This Nature (Awaiting Repress)Boston hardcore super group, and all-around ass kickers, All Pigs Must Die continue the onslaught that their debut album God Is War started with a healthy ten song offering of bludgeoning metal akin to felony assault with a lead pipe. As is the common theme of a healthy minority of the roster that California label Southern Lord has cultivated, All Pigs Must Die's sophomore LP Nothing Violates This Nature grabs you by the balls instantly in the opener "Chaos Arise", as if the schizophrenic and lightening quick hi-hat count off from Ben Koller the instant after hitting the play button isn't subtle enough. As you can imagine from the band name, Nothing Violates This Nature lacks any form of subtlety in its sonic barrage of hate-filled anthems, chalk full of ferocity, violence, aggression, and nihilism. Taking about as much influence from the recent trend of aggressive Entombed worship metal groups, to the "fuck you"-attitude of Discharge punks, All Pigs Must Die cater to focused, yet highly devout following in a new wave of heavy music.
Nothing Violates This Nature rarely lets up on the gas pedal throughout its ten song length. Whether the quasi black metal tremolo opener of "Primitive Fear", to even the hauntingly acoustic opener "Of Suffering" before plummeting into a doom inspired dirge, Nothing Violates... runs the gamut of a plethora of extreme heavy metal genres, not necessarily reinventing the wheel by any means but still packing enough of a punch to appreciate its ferocity on every listen. That being said, Nothing Violates This Nature won't throw many curve balls your way, but for those in the need to get their fill of anger and aggression out this is most definitely the album to pick up and put on repeat. An ass kicking from top to bottom, All Pigs Must Die's sophomore album is rife full of killer with next to nil filler.

Chet Baker QuartetThis session was recorded at Studio Pathe-Magellan in Paris, on Monday October 24, 1955 from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m.
On October 24th only Jimmy Bond was still with Chet: Peter littman had returned to America, and his seat was now accupied by Nils-Bertil 'Bert' Dahlander, a Swedish drummer who'd accompanied Lars Gullin. At the keyboard was an almost-unknown pianist named GÉrard Gustin who'd just been signed to a contract by Eddie Barclay. Given the context, they were obliged to fall back on standards. Chet knew how to play these better than anyone. He chose eight: These Foolish Things, which stayed in his quartet's rÉpertoire for a while, and five others, which the trumpeter performs here for the first time: There's a Small Hotel, Autumn In New York, Summertime, You Go To My Head, Tenderly - and two - I'll Remember April and Lover Man - that he'd done less than ten days earlier together with Lars Gullin and Dick Twardzik, whose disappearance was still something Chet refused to accept. Given this state of affairs, the whole session exudes a kind of sadness that's impossible to put down, whatever the choice of tune or tempo.

It's Not The Eat, It's The HumidityThe Alternative Tentacles Reissues of Necessity is back! We've hooked another live one from the swirling depths of the most obscure, desirable, and just plain deranged.
Like many early punk pioneers The Eat operated in a near-total vacuum, in that infamous cesspool of clueless retirees and moronic sun worshippers known as South Florida. Forming in 1978 and playing their first show in July of 1979, it took another year before they were able to record. Their classic 7s were rare and sought after from the moment they came out, distribution was nil, most were given away at shows and crushed on the spot, some even wound up lining a parrot cage. The result is that their 7-inches Communist Radio and God Punishes the Eat are some of the most sought after and obscenely expensive Killed By Death items ever!
Sure the limited/mangled pressings helped, but the band's twisted angle on the world has a lot to do with the value placed on their early vinyl. Specifically: political concerns like Communist Radio, Nut Cops, Kneecappin' and Nixon's Binoculars. Environmental awareness like Manatee Smacker, M-80 Ant Death, and Living Like a Pig, as well as numerous celebrations of that seedy Florida lifestyle like Catholic Love, Silly Drug Songs, Money for the Police and Psychotic McHale's Navy.
The Eat reappeared sporadically clear through the mid-'90s, yet still seem unaware how wide their cult and notoriety has spread, especially among people who've never actually heard them. There's a lot of information packed into this package to help those latter folks out, in full color!
Both early 7s are here, the audio dropouts in the five God Punishes songs fixed up at last, followed by the entire Scattered Wahoo Action cassette album and all the unreleased songs from their aborted Hialeah album that was chopped down to their third and final seven inch. Sound is top-floor melodic punk 'n' roll - sort of a sped-up Real Kids with rock-bottom Angry Samoans-style lyrics. Disc One's a whopping 30+ studio tracks, many never before released.LP1

ADAD-CON-9717xLand Of Kush
The Big Mango"Sam Shalabi has raised the bar for modern psychedelic music by composing this epic suite for his 20-piece Land of Kush orchestra. Utilizing African, Middle Eastern, Indian, jazz, rock, and folkloric sources, The Big Mango weaves a seamless montage of styles in a transcendent way that is rarely, if ever, achieved. A singular cohesive statement built around four key tracks written for four different female vocalists it will demand your attention from start to finish." - Alan Bishop (Sun City Girls/Sublime Frequencies)
Osama (Sam) Shalabi moved to Cairo in 2011, settling in an apartment one block from Tahrir Square, in the midst of Egypt's 'Arab Spring'. Shalabi describes The Big Mango, his new and phenomenal work for his Land Of Kush big band, as "a love letter to Cairo"
framed by "the beautiful, surreal madness of the city as joyous, horrific, historical events were
unfolding". The music was also inspired by time spent in Dakar, where in Senegal's music scene Sam experienced parallels to another of his central aesthetic and political touchstones, Brazilian Tropicalia, in the sense of a "positivity, complexity and radicalism in art that was also
playful and joyous and wasn't necessarily part of a 'revolution' but seemed to be a form of innate radicalism". In tandem with the relative openness of Dakar's Islamic society - with the much more prominent role and presence of women in public and private life and the relaxed physicality and sensuality of the culture in general - Senegalese music offered a powerful counterpoint and feeling of promise for Egypt's own future. "The Big Mango" is one of the many nicknames for Cairo, but for Shalabi it also evokes the succour and sensuality of southern hemispheric music more generally, in this relation to broader socio-political movements.
MontrÉal remains Shalabi's home base and the city to which he briefly returned towards the end of 2012 to reconvene the troupe of players that have helped him realize his large-scale works under the Land Of Kush moniker. Working through The Big Mango score with
these local musicians culminated in two ecstatic live performances and a recording session at MontrÉal's Hotel2Tango studio. This third album by Land Of Kush is arguably the group's most focused and immediately satisfying.
For Shalabi, gender and Arab culture has been a central theme, one he took up explicitly on the previous Kush album Monogamy (2011), and which similarly drives The Big Mango, where once again a series of female vocalists drawn from MontrÉal's indie rock community anchor the work and convey what in most of the North African Arab world remains a
profoundly unrealized though burgeoning spirit of gender equality, participation, expression and liberation. This promise is at the heart of Shalabi's "love letter".
The Big Mango opens with a bubbling Fauvist stew of balafon, flute, electronics and vocalizations which abruptly segue into solo piano and saxophone improvisations - an introductory set of musical mating calls that invoke the album's deeper conceptual and formal preoccupations. The libidinal energy of rock n' roll is then re-situated in a heterodox Middle Eastern context as the album's centerpiece songs unfold: "The Pit", "Mobil Nil",
"Drift Beguine" and "The Big Mango" each marked by propulsive female vocal performances from Ariel Engle, Katie Moore, Elizabeth Anka Vajagic and Molly Sweeney respectively.
Underpinning each of these singers is some of Land Of Kush's s most melodically and rhythmically compelling music, conjuring a post-modern psychedelia that is truly sui generis. The band delivers the grooves and soloists unleash excursions more fluidly than ever; for many of these players, it's the third time around embracing Shalabi's music, getting inside the spirit of the score, and following his conduction. In combination with the peaking intensity and electricity of Sam's compositional vision, The Big Mango coheres, sparkles and soars: a distillation of the sonic trajectory Land Of Kush has been charting for the past six years.1. Guitarist and singer-songwriter Nils Lofgren in 1997 released a small treasure for longtime fans. Acoustic Live captures Lofgren alone in front of an appreciative audience, knocking out such favorites as You, No Mercy and Keith Don't Go, plus six new songs. Even with the new songs, there are no real revelations, only a selection of little gems that will put a smile on your face as you listen.
Along with his work as a solo artist, Lofgren has marked more than 25 years as a member of Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band as well as a former member of Crazy Horse and Grin. Lofgren joined Neil Young's band in 1968 at age 17, playing piano on the album After the Gold Rush. Lofgren would maintain a close musical relationship with Young, appearing on his Tonight's the Night album and tour among others. He was also briefly a member of Crazy Horse, appearing on their 1971 LP and contributing songs to their catalogue. From '71 to '74 Lofgren was active in Grin, the band he founded in '69. Solo albums and tours followed every year through the 1970s as Lofgren established himself as a top guitarist and live performer earning the respect and acclaim of his peers. Bruce Springsteen made the call in 1984 and Lofgren joined the E-Street Band for the Born in the USA tour. Lofgren was an instant hit with Springsteens fans through his playing and vibrant on stage persona. Lofgren remains a stalwart of the E-Street Band to the present day.
Acoustic Live is an interesting and charming album from Nils Lofgren in 1997 as he follow on in the Unplugged tradition that became popular in the 1990s. It was actually recorded at The Barns Of Wolftrap, Vienna in Virginia on January 18th, 1997. - bestlivealbums.com

After The Gold Rush (Out Of Stock)Ranked 71/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
The second of three consecutive masterpieces Neil Young recorded between 1969 and 1972, After the Gold Rush captures the vibes, emotions, and cautious optimism of the era better than any album of its time. Moreover, it contains a host of impeccably written and performed songs that transcend the period and stand as an inextricable part of the American conscious.
Recorded at Youngs Topanga Canyon Ranch and featuring backing from the legendary Crazy Horse, the then-unknown prodigy Nils Lofgren, and several other friends, the 1970 album embraces many of the seemingly artistic contradictions and eccentric diversity that have made Young so peerless. The title track, a devastatingly gorgeous balladic meditation on the '60s and a warning of what may come in the 1970s, proved prophetic. Every other song is equally spectacular and significant.
The bristling whip-crack of Southern Man furthered Youngs no-holds-barred political commentary and prompted a response song in the form of Lynyrd Skynyrds Sweet Home Alabama, an anthem that its target praised. The country heartache of Oh, Lonesome Me simultaneously plays off and into the romantic spirit of the uplifting Dont Let It Bring You Down and the exuberant romp of When You Dance You Can Really Love. In one swoop, Young and company traverse the Heartland, Southern plantations, Appalachian valleys, and Los Angeles hills.
Having languished for decades, this masterwork (named as one of the '100 Best Albums of All-Time' by Rolling Stone) has finally received the long-overdue sonic treatment its deserved. Remastered from the original tapes by Youngs expert team and overseen by the artist himself, After the Gold Rush now sounds better than ever. Young has never sounded so immediate, detailed, rich, or present on a studio album.
The record joins 1968's Neil Young, 1969s Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, and 1972s Harvest as part of the initial batch of Young recordings pristinely mastered from the original tapes, pressed on high-quality audiophile-grade LP, and packaged in sleeves that faithfully mirror those of the originals.1. Good Luck (Out of Stock)For the past eight years, Boston's rising stars Girls Guns and Glory have been making a name
for themselves through relentless touring (about 200 gigs a year worldwide), the release of four critically acclaimed records, a slew of local awards, including being the Boston Music Awards first act of its genre to win Act of the Year, and international awards (Independent Artist of the Year at the French Country Music Awards). And, now, the hard-working band is refining their focus to the roots of rock 'n' roll with a twist of country on
their fifth album, "Good Luck," due on February 4, 2014 on Lonesome Day Records.
The foursome (Ward Hayden on vocals/guitar, Paul Dilley on electric and upright bass/piano, Josh Kiggans on
drums/percussion, and Chris Hersch on lead guitar/banjo) found inspiration for this record from early '50s rock
'n' roll icons such as Chuck Berry, Eddie Cochran, and Buddy Holly, as well as country greats like Hank Williams
and Johnny Cash.
"Good Luck" looks back to that era of music for a more rock 'n' roll-focused record that kicks off with the heartfelt, feel-good rocker "All the Way Up To Heaven," which sets the tone for the album thematically. "It's about finally winning in love and feeling that thrill of getting something good and having a true appreciation of it," says the singer.
Co-written with Jimmy Ryan (Blood Oranges), "All the Way Up To Heaven," is one of the three songs that Hayden did not singularly craft. He notes, "Jimmy Ryan has long been one of my favorite songwriters. He's got a gold tooth, a taste for whiskey and is possibly the best left-handed mandolin player on the planet. Which is part of what makes his songwriting so special. He doesn't try to get fancy or get flashy with technical intricacies. As a
songwriter he exemplifies three chords and the truth. Like Hemingway with a mandolin. He boils a song down to its bare bones, to where you can see and feel the grit. I think that makes him great. He serves the song from its inception."
The other songs were written over the past two years with the exception of two, "Shake Like Jello" and "UUU," which have been in the band's repertoire for about four years. "We never really had a place for those songs because we were viewing ourselves more of a country band than a rock 'n' roll band and those two songs are definitely more rocking. They fit perfectly on this album," he notes.
Another song close to GGG's heart and the band's Northeast roots is the ballad "Centralia, PA." "Chris and Paul are originally from Eastern Pennsylvania and we tour a lot in that area. We found out about this coal-mining town there called Centralia that was destroyed by a coal fire over 50
years ago. It's a ghost town now because it's unfit to live in. I became fascinated by the tragic story of the town and we kind of wanted to put Centralia back on the map with this song," he says.
Produced by Eric "Roscoe" Ambel (Nils Lofgren, Steve Earle, The Bottle Rockets), "Good Luck" was mixed by Ambel and recorded by Mario Viele at Cowboy Technical Services Recording Rig in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and will be available on CD, vinyl and iTunes on February 4, 2014 via Lonesome Day Records. The band is up for Americana Artist of the Year the 2013 Boston Music Awards and Ward Hayden is up for Male Vocalist of the Year. And, Girls Guns and
