    More Faithful (Awaiting Repress)

More Faithful is No Joy's third full-length for Mexican Summer, and bears the fruits of a band that redefined its work ethic in the gulf of time between recording sessions. The outcome - the juxtaposition of unrest and calm, beauty and chaos, truth and fantasy, in the throes of dimed amps and hair-whipping guitar goddess rock music - is as unwavering as ever. But where Wait To Pleasure balanced textural differences with the freewheeling novelty of the studio environment, More Faithful documents a much more rigorous creative process and performance, one in which the group, recording in NYC and Costa Rica, pushed themselves to new peaks of intensity.

All of the record's 11 songs, in whole or in part, jump at the listener with atypical tunings and key changes, tension from odd time signatures and an upfront rhythmic presence, and the force demonstrated in their live show. It's the most forward, throttling record No Joy has made to date, taking their set of influences to the wall in a brazen display of beauty-laced power. Shoegaze and ethereal and alternative rock revivals be damned; More Faithful pushes No Joy to the breaking point. They've leveled themselves, turning a break-up record into a breakthrough.

    Ghost Blonde

Splitting time between Montreal and Los Angeles, female-fronted noise pop group No Joy are poised to release their debut album, Ghost Blonde. The album fully delivers on the promise of their Mexican Summer 7 release, and it builds upon the revitalization of shoegaze pop in recent times with a melodic fervor and angst that many of their contemporaries fail to capitalize on. The gorgeous sounding Ghost Blonde even contains moments that match the challenges laid down by My Bloody Valentine and Lush years ago.

Ty Segall and White Fence are AS ONE again. Six years after their fun favorite Hair collaboration, and jeez, almost four years after Ty produced the last White Fence record For the Recently Found Innocent, they're back at it. But the second time around, it's no Hair 2 - Joy is its own reward. Tim Presley and Ty take it up a notch, with fifteen wild tracks that share space in a effortless fashion, dispersing doses of the fabled vintage obsessions, but threading them together instead with their own sound of today. Joy, indeed!

    Little Joy

Little Joy is Rodrigo Amarante (Los Hermanos), Fabrizio Moretti (The Strokes) and Binki Shapiro, three friends who dropped their routine in their respective hometowns to make a record in Los Angeles, California. Through a chance encounter at a Portuguese festival in Lisbon, where both Amarante (Los Hermanos) and Moretti (The Strokes) had performed, the two talked about working together on some music that had no affiliation to their particular bands. A year later, Amarante traveled to the United States to record with Devendra Banhart on his Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon. It was there that Amarante and Moretti were introduced to Bink Shapiro through mutual acquaintances and soon after started writing original music as a band. They all moved into a house in Echo Park to demo songs and soon after, with the help of producer Noah Georgeson who had recorded Banhart's music, finished their self titled debut Little Joy named after the bar on the corner.

    Animal Joy

Sub Pop is proud to present Shearwater's Animal Joy, our first album by the band and their eighth overall. Led by Jonathan Meiburg, and featuring drummer Thor Harris, and bassist Kimberly Burke, Shearwater has been a favorite at Sub Pop HQ for years. On Animal Joy, Meiburg ditches the expansive approach of his recent records - particularly the epic trilogy of Palo Santo, Rook and The Golden Archipelago - to create a record that seems shockingly direct, immediate and intensely personal. He's no stranger to lush, crafted recordings, but this one sounds like no prior Shearwater incarnation.

Turbo Fruits have made their name with notoriously wild live shows and
frenetic rock songs about girls, drugs and frying their brains. On No
Control, their fourth and most self-aware album, the band emerges from

    Dead Men Tell No Tales

Dead Men Tell No Tales takes a stripped-down turn with plaintive lyrical confessions as pretty as they are prescient, summoning Syd Barrett?s wild spirit through a seance of simple reverb burbles and acoustic incantations. Front-and-center vocals recounting love, loss and death's lurking presence are presented against airy guitar shimmer in a demented yin and yang seemingly forecasting the scarf-swathed, underground dandy man's abrupt fall nearly 20 years later. In the midst of such weighty tomes are less downtrodden peeks into the studio, where Sudden and his Jacobites are caught on tape in a few joyful fits and starts, adding another complex layer to this celebrated post-punk. In founding Swell Maps, the post-punk prefacing Birmingham art-snots, Nikki Sudden and his drumming brother Epic Soundtracks charted new territory for racket and corrosive guitar. But after folding Swell Maps at the dawn of the '80s, Nikki Sudden plowed through another decade's worth of terrifically fertile ground. Drawing on his devotion to the Rolling Stones and T. Rex - alongside guitarist Dave Kusworth as Jacobites, plus a cheekily named cohort of British sidemen - Nikki Sudden cut a string of raw, inspired rock 'n' roll records, etched with double-edged travel melancholia and hard-bitten punk dejection.

    Wait To Pleasure

Wait To Pleasure may not provide you with any new answers about No Joy, but what it does offer is a batch of incredible new songs, the product of the Montreal noise-pop band's first foray in a fully-furnished studio environment.

Here the band has flourished, delivering their finest set to date, rooted heavily in shoegaze ripcurls and devastating melody, finishing sentences whispered long ago with depth, variance and force. Jasamine White-Gluz, Laura Lloyd and Garland Hastings knock down the fence between nostalgia and modernity, chaos and control, in a perfectly realized work.

The group recorded its debut album, 2010's Ghost Blonde, in their practice space, using USB microphones, consumer audio equipment, and a laptop. "We had to work under a certain set of circumstances, but we did it entirely on our own," says Laura. "If you listen closely enough to that record, you can hear the radio playing through our amps, and phantom echoes of the Metallica cover band and the No Doubt cover band practicing down the hall from our room."

Wait To Pleasure found No Joy set loose in Mexican Summer's studio, Gary's Electric, for two weeks in 2012, with producer Jorge Alberecht (Violens, Lansing-Dreiden) at the helm. "We've never really made a record in an actual recording studio," says Laura. "It couldn't have worked out better. Since Gary's is booked by the label staff, we didn't feel any pressure to get the album finished by a set date. We had the time to bring our ideas to the studio and work them out there, along with the songs we'd finished on our own. We got to work on our own schedule, whenever we were ready." Adding piano, keyboards and drum programming to the record helped to color in their sound the way that they wanted. "Our earlier records are purely guitar-based, rock band lineups," Laura adds, "and with Wait To Pleasure we seized the opportunity to change things up a bit."

    Lanterns

Equal parts producer and composer, Son Lux (aka Ryan Lott) bridges an unusual
gap between old-world music theory and next-level experimentation. Meditative
but heaving with energy, "Lanterns" nds a peculiar congruency between
futuristic soul and ancient sentiment. Driving orchestral electronica (Lost It To
Trying, No Crimes) is placed alongside creepy minimalism (Pyre), often starkly
juxtaposing densely layered arrangements with Lott's fragile voice.

In recent past Son Lux has gained notoriety both for his s/s/s project (with
Sufjan Stevens and Serengeti), and from being named NPR's "Best New Artist of
the Year". His third full-length album, and his rst for Joyful Noise (Kishi Bashi,
Sebadoh, etc.), positions Son Lux at the helm of an impressive ensemble of
instrumentalists and singers, including Chris Thile (The Punch Brothers), Peter
Silberman (The Antlers), DM Stith, Lily & Madeleine, Darren King (Mutemath),
Ieva Berberian (Gem Club) and yMusic (Dirty Projectors, Bon Iver).

    IV

Records like Psychic Temple IV aren't made anymore. Maybe they never were. There is a magic present that some mistake for tubes or tape but it's no more complicated than putting the right musicians together with the right songs.

Produced and composed by band/cult leader Chris Schlarb, Psychic Temple IV is what happens when 87-year old Max Bennett (bassist on Joni Mitchell's Court and Spark and Hissing of Summer Lawns) plays with 26-year old drummer Tabor Allen (of Cherry Glazerr). British rock legend Terry Reid sings a trio of duets written and arranged for the only artist nicknamed Superlungs. When keyboardist Mick Rossi wrote to say he would be in town with the Philip Glass Ensemble, songs were composed and a new date was put on the calendar.

Psychic Temple IV was recorded in Los Angeles over a series of eight large scale sessions. In the spirit of the classic Wrecking Crew sessions for Phil Spector and the Beach Boys, the band was often tasked with recording four songs per session. Vocals were added as soon as the rhythm section tracks were cut with Terry Reid, Arlene Deradoorian, and Nedelle Torrisi joining Chris in the studio to work out harmony parts and sing live together.

After making his vocal debut on III, Schlarb toured the country twice over. His voice is assured and he seems to have lived with these songs (and the idea of singing) for some time. His melodies are soulful yet unpredictable having transferred his ability to write for instrumental ensembles to pop music. And yet the exploratory spirit of the first Psychic Temple album still abides. The music has been poured over with both care and abandon. There is magic in Psychic Temple IV. It's no more complicated than that.

    Built In Sun

Built In Sun is a new project from Joe Plummer, drummer for The Shins, Cold War Kids
and Mister Heavenly. Joe has also produced and co-recorded an all drum project
called Hew Time (with Dale Crover and Coady Willis from The Melvins), released on
Joyful Noise in 2014. Joe has also toured and recorded with Modest Mouse and The
Black Heart Procession drums and percussion over the course of the last 10 years.
Built In Sun started during touring breaks between The Shins "Port of Morrow" and
Cold War Kids "Hold My Home" releases. Built in Sun began as an instrumental idea,
with inspirations landing somewhere between John Cales "Fear", the punk vibe of the
Wipers and John Reis, and his favorite soundtrackists John Brion and Clint Mansell.
After the first instrumental mixes were finished (with the help of Richard Swift) he
decided that the tunes and melodies just might be cool enough to ask a few of his pals
to sing. Pall Jenkins (The Black Heart Procession) was the first. Within a day Pall sent
back John John, with solid scratch vocals. Another song came the next day, with new
ones following almost each day afterward .There was no use to ask anyone else.
The songs really came together with the addition of Pall's vocals and it felt great to
collaborate with him again. With this, Built In Sun was complete

    Mountain Moves

This is no time for the tortured artist. Right now, we're living in two worlds at once. The first is a death-driven monoculture: cutthroat, cynical, exploitative, literally deranged. This is the dominant, unlistening world, the unmoved mountain. Then there's the other world: the still-breathing, idealistic, and wholly life-affirming underground.

Mountain Moves is a celebration of the under-sung communities that have nourished us with their joy, their energy, their individualism, their pointless beauty.Starring the singing, playing, and songwriting of guests whose musical and political voices we admire, Mountain Moves is partly an ecstatic snapshot of a would-be utopia.

Fragmentation is more than an aesthetic. One moment your head's exploding over the stupidity and sadism of our leaders and systems, the next your favorite singer has just emailed you a vocal track recorded in their hotel room on tour. Mountain Moves explores the extremes of despair and hope that make up so much of our minute-to-minute experience.

We met a lot of crowds this year, at Brazilian music festivals, arena shows, protests. The power and potential of a crowd is like music itself - inspiring, healing, urgent. We made Mountain Moves fast, in hopes of capturing some of that communal energy. Please dance and sing along.

    Iberian Passage

    White Colored Vinyl

It should come as no surprise that after years of touring with his band Monotonix,
once hailed by SPIN as the "most exciting live rock band in rock 'n' roll, that Yonatan
Gat would carry that same intensity in his own act. After five successful years of
playing 1000 shows spanning 40 countries and 5 continents and releasing three
records on Drag City with his co-founded band, the New York-by-way-of-Tel-Aviv
guitarist took some time to himself in Portugal. While there, he set out to create a
solo album of a different sort of beat.

Inspired by African ensembles such as Orchestra Baobab, and the early work of
Brazilian psychedelic experimentalists Os Mutantes - Gat's truly amazing talents
    shine out on Iberian Passage, blending his punk influences with the wild improvisational spirit of Miles Davis and Charles Mingus. Gat produced the album himself;
joining forces with Portuguese drummer Igor Domingues. The raw and unique nature
of the recording is augmented by the incredible versatility of the shredded guitar riffs melted between pulsing African-inspired drums. A masterful guitarist, Gat recently
won Village Voice's Best Guitarist of 2013 with a sound he describes as homeless
between the Middle East and New York.

    Command Your Weather

Recorded in Joshua Tree, CA, "Command Your Weather" sees Big Business
return to its original two-man lineup of Jared Warren and Coady Willis. It's
a haunting dream about the struggle for dominance of will over the power
and unpredictability of nature. Or it's just a really great rock record, it
depends on how weird you're willing to get. But you've never had so much
fun being crushed in the cogs of the universe's great machine, that much is

Recorded by Dave Curran of UNSANE/PIGS/BIG BUSINESS' previous
    record fame.

Founded in 2003 in Seattle, WA., Big Business has spent the last 13 years
touring the world and making records. In 2006 Jared and Coady joined

    Lighght

"I really felt like I was witnessing history... in a couple of years we'll be talking about,
'Man, I saw him at this intimate little show." - NPR

"Grand and transcendent... the layers of beautiful sound, homage to Japanese culture,
and use of violin make 151a a dreamy, pocket-sized symphony, perfect for anyone
    needing a lift." - BUST

"Sumptuous orchestral brilliance... It's a stunningly good record, not merely chirpy,
zany, and whimsical-but also packed full of harmonious, heart-stopping beauty. If you
can imagine ELO's very best moments combined with Andrew Bird and a bit of weird
Bjork introspection-well, even that doesn't really do it justice. Apart from Pet Sounds,
perhaps, I can't think of a record that's as singly captivating in its sonic beauty." - THE PORTLAND MERCURY

"Kishi Bashi's music sounds surprisingly basic and natural. He's got such a great way
of thinking about production and melody that I've yet to hear a bad song from him." -
    YOU AIN'T NO PICASO

"The music is off-kilter, particularly the opening chants and swirl of guitar and drums.
The middle section, though, takes a more even-keeled approach to pop, balancing the
looped whistles with peaceful, yet evocative vocals."
    - CONSEQUENCE OF SOUND

"A weightless, cartwheeling, electro-pop romp that's all zz and no fuss" - SPIN

Violinist, singer, and composer Kishi Bashi is slated to release his new album on
April 29, 2014. The album entitled "Lighght" (pronounced "Light") continues and
expands the sound of his critically acclaimed debut, "151a" - which earned Kishi Bashi
the *title* of "Best New Artist" by NPR. Since the profoundly successful release of
"151a" two years ago, Kishi Bashi has toured relentlessly, captivating audiences across
the globe with his loop-based live show, and fostering a groundswell of devotees.

"151a" was crafted over a four-year period while Kishi Bashi was touring and recording with Regina Spektor, Sondre Lerche, and of Montreal (where he was a full-time
member and co-producer). In late 2012, after the success of "151a", Kishi Bashi
decided to focus solely on his own music and began composing the new material
    which has become "Lighght".

"Lighght" takes its title from the one-word poem by minimalist poet Aram Saroyan.
As Kishi Bashi explains, "The poem's blatant assault on literary convention and
classical form was attractive to me." It is apparent that such an approach informed
the new album, which has both broadened and redened his classical foundations.
"Though I have studied classical composition, I prefer to take an unconventional path when it comes to creating and thinking about music," says Kishi Bashi.

Though violin remains his primary instrument and songwriting muse, Kishi Bashi has
expanded his palette to include more diverse and nuanced instrumentation. Bright
and soaring avant-pop songs are prevalent, as are Eastern-tinged arrangements,
gentle ballads, Philip Glass inspired improvisations, and more than a few moments
that irt with 70s prog (in the tradition of ELO or Yes).

If this sounds jarringly kaleidoscopic, that's because it is. But it works. Listen and see.

This album collects Child Bite's recent two sibling EP's into one brutal package. For years, we have watched Child Bite change, contort, and rearrange itself in to the gnarly powerhouse that exists in its current period. Their sound has become more abrasive over time then their spastic avant-pop beginnings.

Within the rst few moments of Worship, you will nd yourself encouraged to "worship the father / slaughter the son" as well as "snip off the tip of the blasphemer's tongue." However you choose to interpret singer Shawn Knight's vocals, which are easily his most hostile to date, you wont escape the mood of this piece. And, the mood is that of 4 perplexed soldiers foraging for rushes of adrenaline to keep themselves alive while condemned to ght an unjust, unwinnable war.

Wrong Flesh is a gritty battle march, which conjures memories of the Deadites storming the castle in search of the Necronomicon. From here, they take us down paths that are exponentially dark - with, No pussy shit as their credo. This is, in fact, the darkest and most mature effort we have seen from Child Bite. The shrilling, and impulsively head-bobbing verses of Scum Gene (Trash Vibrato) - are only rivaled in turpitude by Shawn Knight's lyrics; like those of Smear Where the Face Was that read: Drag behind or standing still - Impulse is fear, and fear you will. The lyrics, as a whole, paint a fuzzy picture of fear, paranoia, and despair.

Bass player Sean Clancy expands on his unique style with brutal tones and syncopated rhythms that match the band's progression further into the macabre. Brandon Sczomak has made the switch from drums to guitar (who knew?). He has awlessly adapted to the precedent set by his predecessors, and he is taking it to fantastic new place. If you are a drummer and you are unfamiliar with Moshe Rozenberg (ex-DD/MM/YYYY), just buy this record right away. I would still listen to this record if it were only drums. The beats were also partly written and arranged during pre-production by Detroit drummers: Brandon Moss (Bars of Gold), Matt Rickle (Javelins/Fawn), Brandon Sczomak (current Child Bite guitarist), and Dave Vaughn (Detroit Cobras). The album was recorded with Chris Koltay of High Bias Recordings (Akron/Family) riding the faders. It was mastered by the infamous Weasel Walter (XBXRX, Flying Luttenbachers).

Tchaikovsky - Symphony No. 6 Pathetique (Speakers Corner) (Awaiting Repress)

Made during the pioneering days of stereo technology when everyone was vying for a piece of the cake, it is hard to believe that this absolutely top-notch recording of Tchaikovsky's "PathÉtique" has never been brought to the ears of music lovers until today. And it is even more unbelievable since it was made by a first-class orchestra, the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, and conducted by one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century, Ferenc Fricsay. The reasons for the non-release are a matter of speculation because those responsible have kept them under their hat.

Not even the man behind the microphone, Werner Wolf, can recall making this recording - although a yellowed recording protocol discloses carefully noted details about the recording venue and date. No wonder that the tapes never got made into records. It is not with a little pride and much joyful anticipation that the announcement can be made: the record is spinning on the turntable at last!

And at long last a gap in Fricsay's repertoire can be closed. Specially recommended: listen to the wonderful clarity of the upper strings which is preserved even in the softest passages.

This record was part of the 3-LP Set "The Conductors" and is now available again.

    Musicians:

    • Radio-Symphony-Orchestra Berlin

    • Ferenc Fricsay (conductor)

Recording: 17-19 and 22 September 1959 at Jesus-Christus Kirche, Berlin, by GÜnter

Hermanns and Werner Wolf / Production: Otto Gerdes

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Wolf's Law

There's something panoramic about The Joy Formidable's music - their mountainous, fuzzed out riffs and ferocious, earthy rhythms shrouded in ethereal haze. It sounds like where they're from: Childhood friends Ritzy Bryan (vocals, guitar) and Rhydian Dafydd (bass, vocals) grew up in rural North Wales, surrounded by rolling green hills and little else. There's a beauty and a loneliness to the landscape there, says Dafydd. We had no neighbors growing up, Bryan notes. I think my parents looked for a house with no neighbors so they could play their music as loud as possible.

For her part, Bryan loved the isolation. Growing up as an only child, the singer immersed herself in her parents' enormous record collection and the classical guitar studies she took on at the age of seven. I loved playing guitar by myself, back then I was quite introverted with my music, she says.

Bryan and Dafydd had been writing music separately from one another, and worked together in a couple of short-lived local bands after finishing school. They knew they wanted to collaborate, but didn't manage to make it work until a few years ago. We kept missing each other, Ritzy says. Bryan went off to Washington, D.C on a whim and returned to Wales in 2008 with renewed focus. My family situation wasn't easy to go back to says Bryan. I came back out of necessity and found a lot of sanctuary recording with Rhydian and having this new band to concentrate on.

For six months, the pair wrote together, experimenting with different sonic approaches. We'd go for walks in the hills between recordings, Dafydd remembers. We'd write for hours and hours, adds Bryan, and if we got frustrated, we'd go stomp it out, up and down the mountains. But as the sessions began yielding signature tunes like Austere and Cradle - tracks that combined the duo's interest in thick, textured noises with clear, shimmering pop hooks - they knew they'd found their sound. We'd always been into writing strong melodies, Bryan says. The sparks really flew when we started messing with things that were choral and symphonic, mixed with what both of us had already enjoyed separately: dirty, loud, rhythmic guitars and thick bass-lines.

    AAARTH (Pre-Order)

AAARTH makes a statement unlike its predecessors. Drawing inspiration from a worldwide climate of political and social uncertainty the band transplanted themselves in Utah's vivid natural landscape immersed in a collage of colors and light, the ever fluid and expansive Southwestern sky mirroring our rapidly-changing world. The deep burnt-orange rocks and canyons became touchstones as the band formed the sonic landscapes of AAARTH. From soaring choruses to percussive pulsating guitars, The Joy Formidable paint an 11 song musical tapestry deftly balancing a sound as grounded as their ancient surroundings and as elusive and mind-bending as a gloaming desert sky.

AAARTH first came to life on the road penning lyrics and recording selected parts in hotel rooms around the world. They self-produced and mixed most of the album in their mobile recording studio. This critically adored trio is comprised of Ritzy Bryan (lead vocals, guitars), Rhydian Dafydd (bass, backing vocals) and Matt Thomas (drums, percussion). Formed in North Wales 10 years ago, each album they've released has been a joyful adventure and reflection of their fearless creative discovery and self evolution. The Joy Formidable has always refused to be fenced in or fit in. That restless and boundless artistic journey continues on their fourth album, an arresting and unapologetic tour de force that finds a band at its apex with no sign of getting comfortable.

Certainly, the road to AAARTH hasn't always been easy. Staying together as a band for 10 years requires immense tenacity and passion, both of which The Joy Formidable have never lost. That same tenacity echoes in their new unrelenting affecting musical treatise. The songs, melodies, and arrangements on AAARTH soar seamlessly from the personal to the epic sometimes in loneliness, vulnerability, disillusionment, joy,and redemption, but all the while refusing to deny the persistence of our own and other's imperfectly beautiful humanity. Fernando Chamerelli's evocative album art frames this vibrant, diverse, and playful melodic and lyrical collage.

While the sounds build the mood at the heart of this album are haunting songs that don't let go, "Cicada (Land On Your Back)" draws on the shamanistic influence of Utah, infusing the melody with a lingering psychedelic impression. "We wanted some kind of rebirth, the way you do in a tribal drug ceremony," Rhydian says. "We wanted to lose ourselves and start again." These themes of feeling lost and letting go only to reconnect with yourself thread through the songs. In "All and All" these themes are echoed, as the guitars hypnotically build into a crashing tide of reckless abandon, hope, yearning, and desperation.

There's one little part of me

that doesn't want to let go

It's easier to be the old me

I'm tired of staring down the price of bravery

All in all there's something missing

All in all there's something you can do

I won't play it down or pretend I haven't found

Because all in all there's something in you

The album is book-ended by two songs that calls for a world less divided, offering a dual desire that we take on the challenge to find love and forgiveness across entrenched divisions, while reminding us that healing journey cannot happen unless we also allow forgiveness and love for ourselves. "Y Bluen Eira," written in Welsh, invokes a white feather, a symbol of weakness in British history, and a snowflake. "It's very easy to write off a whole group of people just by labeling them," Ritzy notes. "That leads to a lack of communication and isolation. If we can be curious and courageous, then maybe we will find conversation across the spectrums that divide us and maybe even find new patterns to heal our world and ourselves".

From the contagiously sweeping sonic feast of "You Can't Give Me" to the careening and addictive "All and All", (possibly one of the more wrenching and beautiful rock ballads since the Yeah Yeah Yeahs "Maps" shattered male dominated rock radio over a decade ago), their new record grasps its listener tight and refuses to let go. NME has written that, 'The Joy Formidable has always sounded so much bigger than the stages they inhabit'. With the release of AAARTH later this year, we are poised for the moment where the size of this band's stages, may just yet, catch up with their sound. For a band who never coveted nor chased mainstream success a much wider audience awaits and, as always for this Welsh trio, it arrives on their timeline and will be met on their own terms.

    Recovering The Satellites

For their second album, Recovering the Satellites, Counting Crows crafted a self-consciously challenging response to their unexpected success. Throughout the record, Adam Duritz contemplates his loss of privacy and sudden change of fortunes, among other angst-ridden subjects. In one sense, it's no different from the subjects that dominated August and Everything After, yet his outlook is lacking the muted joy that made Mr. Jones into a hit. Similarly, the music is slightly more somber, yet the approach is harder and more direct, which gives even the ballads a more affecting, visceral feel.

Lalo: Symphonie Espagnole / Ravel: Tzigane (Speakers Corner)

Whenever the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and Ernest Ansermet, their conductor of many years standing, entered the hall for a recording session, all lovers of high quality LPs looked forward to yet another addition to their collection. And when this wonderful ensemble was joined by such a unique artist as Ruggiero Ricci, who had appeared in the Carnegie Hall at the early age of nine, then their joy knew no bounds. The present re-release offers all fans of fiery rhythms and sumptous symphonic sound a wonderful opportunity to revel in a musical treat in audiophile quality.

Lalo's highly virtuosic and therefore seldom performed Symphonie espagnole glows with a rich sound palette full of southern temperament as only a large orchestra can. Ruggiero Ricci rivets the listener's attention with his pithy tone, his amazing cascades of sound and melancholy gypsy melodies.
For all those who cannot get enough of Ricci's captivating playing, a brilliant encore is provided by Ravel's Tzigane - a true showpiece of 20th-century violin repertory.

Sheer delight for the ears and the soul - and certainly not limited to fans of virtuoso violin playing.

    Beyondless

Beyondless is the 4th LP from Iceage. This
    record radiates joy.

Pay attention to the journey, from New Brigade,
a juvenile delinquent take on post-punk, full
of cold, distant condemnation, and onto the
ecstasy of You're Nothing, shedding the more
aggressive hardcore influence and dragging in
more light, a tendency followed on Plowing Into
The Field Of Love. The intoxication is consistent,
this has always been drunk music, but it's less a
stumbling confusion and more a sturdy heartfelt
confession with each record. They have finally
caught up with their ambition. Their entire charm
has always rested in their running ahead of
themselves with blind confidence, taunting you
to follow and you follow because wherever they
are going is vital, is alive; on Beyondless they
are treading with an assurance that is disarming,
but there is no loss of charm, you are arm in
    arm now, whispering intimacies.

Intimacies that recall other intimacies: something
must have happened when Iceage heard Gun
Club Miami. Some traumatic event! A wild band
has not been tamed, but is in repose, retaining
an edge but expressing something less definite,
something about hurt or longing or regret.

Letting in the light, the joy radiates. They are
post post-punk, Beyondless retains the rich
character of their brash beginnings, but this is
something beyond, oh hell, this is something
very, very special, a generous gift for an anemic
    age.
